Battling a master vampire should have been the highlight of my week. But it was only Tuesday.
My cryptid hunting agency—yes, the same one I conned into hiring me—has been contracted to catch a supernatural arsonist. The perpetrator is targeting LA’s homeless, and the body count is rising fast.
Though I’ve sworn to keep my distance from Kyle, my intuition is pushing me into a partnership. Danger, Maddy! Not only will I have to hide my true nature and growing attraction, but we’re uncovering evidence that a powerful player is behind the attacks—and they’ll eliminate anyone who gets in their way.
Meanwhile, I’m in a race against shadowy operatives to discover the origin of my mother’s locket. The answers may lurk in my childhood home where my demon first awakened—and the last place I ever wanted to return.
As fire and ash sweep the city, time is running out. But stopping the arsonist could cost me everything. My secrets…my sanity…quite possibly my soul....
Can’t it just be Tuesday again?
Maddy Deeds is a feature series in the hot-selling Croftverse. If you like your urban fantasy with deep secrets, found families, a gutsy heroine for a guide, and a slow burn on the side, you’ll love Maddy Deeds!
Brad Magnarella writes urban fantasy for the same reason most read it – to explore worlds where magic crackles from fingertips, vampires and shifters walk city streets, cats talk (some excessively), and good prevails against all odds. It’s shamelessly fun.
His three main series, Prof Croft, Blue Wolf, and Maddy Deeds, make up the growing Croftverse, with nearly a half-million books sold to date and an Independent Audiobook Award nomination.
Hopelessly nomadic, Brad can be found in a rented room overseas or hiking America's backcountry.

Maddy Deeds is a winner for Brad. The second book was better than the first. That was due to less Emma. It amazes me how so-called religious people do not see that they are committing graver sins than the ones they are trying to stop. Emma has not shown an ounce of Christ’s empathy, nor his modesty. Her psycho mom needs to go.
We get Corky the terrier back. He is a joy. I am hopeful that Joni will play a larger part going forward. And we meet a new character, Priestly. I love him. We need to keep him, Brad!
Maddy Deeds, former Hollywood super agent, and LA's newest cryptic bounty hunter has so much going on. She and her partner have just been handed a new case. A strange arsonist is attacking homeless encampments, and there are signs that the source may be mystical in nature. Meanwhile, Maddy is coming to terms with the fact that she has daemonic abilities, that will make her hunted by many, including her own partner. She is trying to gain acceptance into an enclave that could protect her, while digging into her mother's past to find more answers. She is also trying to find a say to prove to her partner that a group he is connected to may not be as holy as they seem. Maddy is juggling all of this while trying to keep a vision from coming to pass. A vision that has LA consumed by infernal fire. Another great entry by Brad Magnarella. There are twists and turns a plenty, but also some appearances from some familiar faces to keep you centered. Starting a new series in a new place with new characters that is still connected to past stories is never easy, but this author will keep you turning the pages to see where the next surprise is coming from.
Maddy Deeds has a lot on her plate. She went from being a married headhunter of actors for the top Hollywood productions to a divorced bounty hunter of supernaturals preying on humans, hiding her own newly discovered demonic powers from her employer. She’s avoiding a cult that already tried to kill her, a cult her partner believes in after they helped him following a demonic attack on his family. Prof Croft has left, returning to his life on the opposite side of the country, and something big is brewing in LA. Apocalyptic big. She has her new powers, a few scattered leads to chase down, Rusty—the loyal mullet sporting tech support buddy she never knew she needed—a group of fellow supernatural locals that seem ambivalent about her potential membership, an AI program with the personality of a lush, and a partner with a shattered past she might be falling for… Lone Daemon is a fantastic read that left me anxiously counting the hours until the sequel comes out. Don’t miss out on Maddy Deeds 2!
I had to wait what seemed like fifty forevers for the Audible to drop after this ebook came out so that I might listen and read along like I always do. I am thrilled to say it was absolutely worth it! Magnarella, one of my absolute favorite authors, never disappoints, and Maddy is especially dear to me for her struggles. My only complaint story-wise is that it ended far too soon and now, alas, I must wait again.
The narrator is now the voice of Maddy in my head, and I have accepted her. That said, I still prefer James Patrick Cronin in all ways and things, and this new narrator's mispronunciation of a few words was quite painful. I still thoroughly enjoyed the book, however, and will, without any doubts, continue to listen to every installment.
Please bring us book three ASAP, Mr. Magnarella! 1 million out of 5 stars for being clean and crazily entertaining at the same time.
Maddy's to-do list to get her new life in order just keeps getting longer. She needs to figure out her mother's story, reckon with her own childhood, find new allies to protect herself, investigate the shady Solar Temple, all while working her day job stopping supernatural threats and not exposing her nature to her partner or the other organizations butting heads with them. Fortunately she still has Croft and Rusty to help. Unfortunately, her day job just threw her and Kyle an arson case that forces her to deal with all her tasks at the same time. This is another great ride in the Croftverse with fun and compelling characters. Maddy's worldview gives us a fun and different look at this world of magic and supernatural creatures. I'm looking forward to more adventures on the West Coast as more of Maddy's puzzle takes shape.
A well-written sequel that delivers on the promise of book 1 while turning up the dial even higher. Along the way, we see Maddy discover more about herself and her history, which provides some answers but also raises more questions that kept me hooked. And the climactic scenes of the story are a real rollercoaster ride that made it hard to put the book down until I reached the end.
Maddy is a great addition to the case of the ‘Croftverse’, and a contrast in temperament and background to the main characters of the other interlinked series. She’s sassy and confident, but also fallible and has real depth. And as you’d expect from Brad Magnarella, there’s a good balance between drama, humour and poignancy.
This is a good one. I have enjoyed most of Brad Magnarella's books, but "Lone Daemon" stands out in terms of plot, pacing, storytelling and outcome. The book is well structured, well written and makes sense within the context of the world that the author has created; something that often falls short in fantasy literature. The characters act sensibly, for the most part, but even when they don't it their actions are reasonable given their personalities and the information they have available to them. In this book we learn more about the structure of Maddy's world, and the players in it. We also learn more about her background and the tribulations that formed her psyche. The story is clearly building toward something and I am very interested in finding out what.
After learning some uncomfortable truths, Maddy tries to distance herself from Kyle before he can learn her secret. But the universe has other ideas, as they are partnered to find out who is targeting homeless camps, leaving death and destruction in their wake.
Maddy is a fantastic character who is flawed but likeable, who makes genuine connections with the people around her and who draws the reader into her world. She is conflicted, scared, and uncertain, but also brave, and determined to try and be a good person, in spite of her demonic heritage. The supporting characters are well-written and relatable as well, and the relationships and interactions feel authentic.
I particularly enjoyed learning more of Maddy’s back story, and look forward to joining her as she continues to try to solve the mystery of her mother in future books.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Maddy & the one-dimensional Emma are the least interesting of the large cast of characters in this series thus far. Maddy's interactions with others are good for propelling the story from scene to scene but too much time is spent explaining her motives through her thoughts. The other secondary and tertiary characters are fantastic; I'm looking forward to exploring more back story involving them.
I absolutely love the character of Maddy, she's feisty, strong and her secret powers are super intriguing. Such a great addition to the Croft universe! I love the way the books tie together with Croft and The Blue Wolf series. The twists are turns keep you on your toes and i honestly cannot wait for more!
This was another good read by the author. I found it quite uplifting to see how people use your failures against you and only to see the characters phrase above and understanding that it’s not necessarily your perception but their perception that they have of you due to your failures and not necessarily your successes.
Brad has gone and done it again. This installment in the Maddy Deeds series is phenomenal. Paced great, with a great balance between action and introspection. Definitely a great addition to the Croft-verse, and I'm looking forward to reading more about her exploits!
Love Maddy’s character and Brad’s character development. I love how he brings you into Maddy’s mind and what she is thinking. I love the interaction between the characters, especially Kyle and Rusty. Great story and looking forward to Brad’s next installment.
I had not intended to read further in this series when I made the mistake of reading the first chapter. Off I went and now must wait for the next book to be published.
So much fun to read and so many twists I didn't see happening. I loved seeing Professor Croft in this one, but Rusty is my favorite side character! This was such a fun ride and I can't wait for the next one already! Maddy still has so much to figure out. She has tasks from Croft to accomplish that she reeeeaaalllly doesn't want to do. And then there's Emma... will Maddy find the proof she needs, or is she barking up the wrong tree? Is she right about Mouse, or is Kyle? And Special Recovery just keeps showing up. So many sharp turns, and the story held me enthralled until "the end."
