I truly recommend everyone to read this series. The art work's superior! The story's awesome with perfect plot twists and they all make sense in the story logic perfectly! If you love fantasy, if you love mystery or detective stories, if you love Manga or beautiful art work, and if you love a good story, you must read this!
*may be spoiling from here on* I Fuckin Loved the scene where Sebastian was going to devour Ciel! The Art, the Vibe, the dialogues, everything was killing me to the point where I truly couldn't tame my eyes of off the pages for even a second! I love how cruel and honest they are towards each other. I love EVERYTHING about this manga! A truly beautiful well-written story. 💛✨
*No Spoilers* The werewolf arc is pretty much wrapped up, with one last question left in a major cliffhanger.
Yana's masterfully inter-woven and complex plots in this arc -- werewolves, the Cursed Forest, Ciel's physical and psychological collapse, the emotional chaos and turmoil of Mey-Rin, Finny, Baldo and Snake, Sebastian's inability to assist Ciel -- are resolved in the most surprising ways.
Yana's writing skills imo in volumes 19 & 20 have advanced to a totally new level. Sudden bits of hilarity appear to break the high level of tension and drama. She stops on a dime, and returns to another high stakes sub-plot, leaving the reader eagerly turning the pages and breathless with anticipation.
Her gasp-worthy resolutions are like a bolt of lightning that no reader could ever see coming -- making perfect sense, and showing her deep intelligence and imagination.
Yana's highly unique and impressive artwork also make a leap to the next level, especially with the Ciel storyline. No spoilers, but WOW.
"John", to whom Queen Victoria has been talking to in the most recent books, is finally identified as John Brown, the Queen's Master of the Horse. That's been bugging me as to who the heck "John" is.
At least Volume 21's release date is 11/17/15! How will the cliffhanger question be answered???!
The Black Butler series is rated Older Teen and deals with an assortment of characters from the Phantomhive estate who work for the Queen of England in a time I would estimate around the late 1800 to early 1900 era (although sometimes this is clouded by elements introduced in the story.) Of course if you have already read any of the previous 19 volumes you would be well acquainted with Ciel Phantomhive and his personal butler Sebastian who is literally a devil of a butler as they deal with the unusual and the underworld. There is blood, violence, and occasionally sexual innuendo so be sure to read this book (and perhaps the earlier volumes) before allowing a younger manga reader from reading this series.
In the last volume Ciel almost died due to the Miasma in the forest around the small village they are investigating due to the rumors of a wolfman curse. Thanks to the Emerald Witch (Sieglinde Sullivan) he was saved but the experience left him in shock and his servants had to take care of him without Sebastian because Ciel was suddenly terrified of him. I am not sure how many people like me get Black Butler books as soon as one can and read them right away but at the end of the last book Ciel book he demanded he wanted to go home and that was where we were left off. I am a little confused why Sebastian who normally would obey his commands was able to ignore this decree and can only rationalize it was because Ciel was not in his right mind when he declared such a cowardly request.
In the mean time Sebastian was taking matters in his own hand while his lord was recovering and sent samples of the forest back to England to be examined. Unfortunately I can't tell you what they discover because it is key to the secret of the Witch's forest and I think it would be best you read and enjoy the answers yourself while enjoying the beautiful artwork that is common with this series. Oh and we get to see Sebastian shock Ciel back to his normal self in a most gruesome way so don't miss out as we get a glimpse of Ciel's possible final moments. :)
If I had to chose a favorite moment in this book it would have to be early on when the Queen finds out the results of the samples sent and her emotional state begins shifting from worry to excitement as her Master of Horse takes out a hand puppet of her love Albert cheering her on and finally to calm as she takes a note out and prepares a response for for Ciel. I also think it is great that Finny finally got a cover to himself and hope to see more of the Phantomhive servants in full color in the future. :)
I loved being able to see Ciel’s true feelings towards everything that has happened in his life. In this volume, Ciel is going through a pretty bad PTSD episode and is paralyzed with fear, meaning the facade he’s worked these past three years to build up has been temporarily lost. We see him reject all adults especially the demon who *major spoilers for future volumes ahead* took his brothers soul from him and is waiting for his own. He only accepts Finni and sullivans presence because they’re kids. This is heartbreaking when you know what happened to him in the cult. In his nightmare, we see his brother show up as well as all the people he’s lost in his life. The guilt he holds is immense, particularly towards his twin. We also see guilt come up about taking ciels place from the last volume: “I’m not worth protecting, but rather [the real ciel]”. It broke my heart to see him think this way about himself, as being worth less than his twin, but I don’t blame him with the way he was treated as a young child. Sebastian is able to take him out of his PTSD episode in a pretty jarring manner. He reminds us once more (in case we forgot) that he’s a hungry demon who made a contract for the purposes of feeding himself. He’s about to eat ciel until ciel comes to his senses and stops him. It seems like Sebastian gave Ciel a chance to redeem himself before he ate him. I’d like to think it’s because he actually finds amusement out of playing butler but it was probably just so he could get a second chance at seasoning his food. I enjoyed seeing snippets of his demon form again.

WHAT. THE. HECK. What is even happening!?? I did not get anything at all. Not too much happened in this volume, but it was also super intense, and I was flipping pages likes crazy, looking for answers. Hopefully, the next volume will really clear things up.
THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR I GENUINELY HAVE NO WORDS.Ciel's growth in this volume was so beautiful yet sad to watch (the "I did it for me!" part,,,damn).Finny taking care of ciel(actually had me in tears and I'm not even sure why),the very nice feeling of found family I got from the phantomhive gang here, lady suvillian(yes literally just her existence. She is the sweetest and deserves the world).Sebastian giving me major trust issues (as always)🥰🥰🥰,,,It was so dark and but also had sweet and funny moments I don't know what to say even except that it was SUCH A GOOD FREAKING VOLUME I can't

And gawd DAMN! The twists and turns in this one! I mean, for sure there’s been plenty of twists and turns in all the story-lines so far, but I think this one took the cake!
Not gonna spoil anything, so this review will probably be short. Just safe to say that Ciel is coming back to himself thanks to Sebastian who goes ALL OUT demon/devil on him! GAWD DAMN! I LOVED IT! I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!! We need more of Sebastian showing off how much of a devil he really is…
Finney, Mey-Rin, Snake, Mr Tanaka and Balto are just awesome all around. They are SO DIFFERENT as people, but they are still good friends and they all have in common that they love Ciel and all want the best for him. That is quite clear here as well, and I love that so much with them. I do have a soft spot for the old man Mr Tanaka. We don’t see much off him, but when we do he steals the scenes he is in.
But none of all that above can take away the extreme plot twists in this one! I just feel SO SO BAD for Lady Sullivan! Her entire life, everything she’s believed in… Geezes… If that’s not child-abuse, I don’t know what is. Poor, poor girl. I hope she’ll go with Ciel and Sebastian, because anything is better than this. Such an elaborate scheme they created for YEARS just to abuse her intelligence. I mean… My goodness.
And, of course, it ended on a cliffhanger of DOOM! Just because I’ll be taking a bit of a break from these. Oh well.
The artwork in this is amazing, it really is. Toboso is a great artist for sure!
So, now I’ve read more than half of these and if this twisty volume is anything to go by, I’ll look forward to the rest of them!
I really think KS chapters are the shortest. And no, it is not only because they are fun to read. They are really short, comparing to other mangas. It ends so fast and then we have to wait forever for the next release
Seems like the arc is coming to its end, and frankly, this volume was a bit disappointing. Half of it was about Ciel facing his fears and then coming to his self. (Although, major thumbs up for the image of Sebastian in his "demon-about-to-eat" mode!).
I love Snake, I approve him as part of the gang... it is impossible not to.
The mystery about the werewolves. Hmph. Not the paranormal thing I was hoping. Oh well... I am sure I will change my mind eventually. Yana Toboso has that kind of power.
Extra chapter: 5 stars. Not sure if only this manga online has it or the real volume has it, but I love it! An extra chapter in the circus (which is one of my "I loved it, I hated it" arc). The story about the tooth fairy was really sweet (the one with Doll) but Sebastian's one... He is so naughty when he is drunk. And Ciel's reaction... (This kind of reaction never fails, ever).
So we get to see Ciel’s inner struggles here. He’s locked in his mind, and he can’t get out. Meanwhile Sebastian and the servants are trying to figure out how to deal with the witches and wolves situation. Finally, Sebastian grows tired of Ciel, and he decides to deal with it. It’s much more intense than I expected, but I like Ciel’s reaction when he finally wakes up.
Ciel has to act like an adult in most situations, with most people. And he’s definitely mature for his age, having gone through what he has. But he’s still a kid, and it’s nice to see that.
After that, Ciel knows what to do with the wolves and witches. And they get down to business. And poor Lady Sullivan learns the truth behind everything, that they were all using her. The cliffhanger has me excited, intrigued to see what Ciel plans to do with Lady Sullivan.
I just love this series. I can’t wait for the next one.
It's difficult to write a review about this volume without giving too much away. Several things are wrapped up, even though the story arc is not complete, yet. Due to Sebastian's investigations, a major puzzle is possibly solved.
One of the more intense, and beautifully drawn out scenes, is the scene when our favorite Demon Butler decides to solve Ciel Phantomhive's "illness". The artist's rendering of Sebastian preparing to feast is both amazingly well-done and chilling.
The only frustrating thing --- is I have to wait several months before the next volume comes out! Argh!
Some manga sag interminably. Black Butler could be endanger of doing so, but it's just so darn fun! Toboso-sensei's art just gets better and better, and the characters more interesting. It is a joy to see how dreadful Sebastian and Ciel can be toward each other, and how almost villainous they can get together. I have quite enjoyed their excursion into Germany, and I've also enjoyed the new characters. And I can't wait to see what happens next.
A seguir leyendo!!!!!
