A Mother’s Worst Nightmare – And a Secret No One Saw Coming
"A stunning mystery packed with dark secrets, deception, and relentless tension. Fans of psychological thrillers will be hooked!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐A taut, mysterious and emotional story. – Edel Coffey
Never Look Back by Karen Fitzgibbon, when the book starts we meet Jenny who’s on the phone with her 29 year-old son Naya, telling him she was at the train station with his sister Clara but when she turned around Clara was gone and oh yes she’s also given birth to a baby girl!. Jenny will eventually name the nameless baby Lucy but it doesn’t get her any closer to finding Clara but when her brother Nya involves an old college friend and they both investigate the story will get much crazier and go international before it even comes close to being solved. this book has too much in it to give a really good summary just know if you like a story with many moving parts that all end up in the same place the you’ll absolutely love this intelligently done twisty thriller. I have never read a book by this author but I definitely want to read more from her in the future the book is set in Ireland which I only mentioned because I love reading books set and other countries and that is the only reason I mentioned it. This was a great book and one I definitely absolutely 100% recommend. #BookSirens, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview, #KarenFitzgibbon, #NeverLookBack,
Jenny’s world shatters in an instant at Colbert Station, Limerick. One minute, she’s holding her daughter’s newborn baby – a child she didn’t even know existed – the next, Clara has vanished. No trace. No warning. Just gone. Panic, dread, and questions that burn hotter with every passing hour. How do you search for someone who seems to have disappeared into thin air?
Clara’s brother, Nyah, desperate and running out of time, calls on Lana Bowen, an old college friend and Limerick’s sharpest private investigator. Together they chase Clara’s trail from Ireland to London, each lead darker and more bewildering than the last. Who is Clara running from? What is she involved in? And can Lana unravel the truth before it’s too late?
The pace hits like a slow burn at first, but the tension is relentless once Fitzgibbon pulls you in. Lana is a compelling, gritty heroine – smart, determined, yet fiercely human. The family dynamics are heartbreakingly real, and themes of deception, abuse, and long-buried secrets are handled with sensitivity, making every revelation land with impact. Every corner turned feels fraught with danger, every whispered secret a potential shock.
Set against the often-overlooked backdrop of Limerick, Never Look Back is a taut, gripping Irish thriller that keeps you guessing until the very last page. If you crave suspense, clever plotting, and a heroine you can’t help rooting for, this is one to devour.
Many thanks to the author for kindly sending me an advance copy. As always, all opinions my own.
I thought this was a wonderfully written suspenseful novel. It is written in third person with the points of view of Nyah and Jenny, the brother and mother of Clara respectfully. Both are worried about Clara who seemed distant so Jenny went to Belfast to bring her home for a break. But, at the train, station Jenny is left with an unnamed child while Clara just disappears. Concern for Clara’s safety, she is reported missing but the Guardià don’t believe it. Nyah gets in touch with an old acquaintance who works as a private investigator. They try to trace Clara’s steps and Jenny tries to make sense of Megan Carmichael’s cryptic comments and her daughter Alexis strange demeanour. Having the 2 points of view works well to build suspense as you must wait to see what happens next for the person after you’ve read about the other person. It was truly well crafted and I would recommend to anyone who likes suspense. I was given a free digital copy by BookSirens and I leave this review voluntarily. Seriously, get the book when it’s released.
Did I start & finish this book in a day? Yes, yes I did.
This is my first time reading a novel from Karen Fitzgibbon and I applaud her because she did well. The novel offers a compelling mystery led by a strong yet vulnerable female protagonist. Told in third person and four (4) different POV, the story thoughtfully explored themes such as dementia, family dynamics, and abuse- all of which were handled with care by Karen Fitzgibbon.
The plot is rich with suspense, family secrets, and dark twists that kept me hooked throughout the day. Though the beginning is a bit slow, the pace eventually picks up, making the novel an engaging and satisfying read.
Thanks to BookSirens and the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Oh, my, this book started off way slow for me. I thought about DNFing it, but I plowed along. The last 15% to 20% picked up, thank goodness. It takes place in Ireland and England.
Clara goes off to school in Belfast. Jenny, her mom, surprises her with a visit. Jenny decides to bring her home, but Clara disappears at the train station.
I figured out quite a lot of this book before it actually happened. It wasn't really what I thought it would be.
Thanks to Booksiern and Karen Fitzgibbon for the E-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Never Look Back by Karen Fitzgibbon published May 6th with Poolbeg Press and is described as 'emotional and electrifying: a thriller that hits close to home’.
Having signed a three-book deal with Poolbeg Press in July 2023 Karen Fitzgibbon was inspired to write a series featuring Limerick-based private investigator Lana Bowen. Her debut, The World’s End, published in May 2024, with book three scheduled for 2026. Each book can be read as a standalone but, in order to fully understand Lana’s story, Karen would encourage readers to begin at the beginning.
When Lana receives a call from an old college buddy she is intrigued. Nyah’s sister Clara, nineteen years old, has disappeared, last seen with her mother Jenny at Colbert Station. Jenny was travelling with Clara, having come from Belfast where Clara had been a first year college student. Clara had surprised Jenny by having a new-born baby with her but had agreed with Jenny that going back to the family home in Limerick was an advisable move. Jenny was confused but hoped that, in time, Clara would open up and reveal all.
As Jenny manoeuvred her way around Colbert Station with the baby in her arms, she suddenly realised that Clara was no longer with them. Clara had simply vanished. Concern set in but, after a time, Jenny went home in the hope that Clara would surface, Nyan immediately returned to the family home but as the police were slow to act, Nyan called Lana for assistance.
Together they track Clara’s movements which take them to London but as the scent gets stronger, it soon becomes clear that something more sinister is at play. As Lana and Nyan dig deeper, they start to pull at a thread that leads them on a circuitous journey, eventually taking them back to Ireland where they try to unravel the truth.
I have to say I love the idea of a Limerick based series as it’s not a county I read about too often in crime fiction. A female PI is an interesting lead character and her depiction as a dependable and gritty, yet vulnerable, individual is intriguing. Relationships are nicely developed throughout the novel with many themes highlighted including dementia, family dynamics and physical abuse, all very sensitively handled by Karen Fitzgibbon. A well-paced and satisfying novel, Never Look Back is a solid read, a highly entertaining Limerick-based mystery, with more to come!
Jenny loses her nineteen-year-old daughter Clara at Colbert Station in Limerick. One moment Clara is beside her, the next she vanishes, leaving behind a baby Jenny hadn’t even known existed until the day before. Desperate for answers, Clara’s brother Nyah enlists Lana Bowen, a sharp-witted private investigator and old friend. Their search takes them to London, following a trail that grows stranger with each step. But Clara always seems just out of reach, vanishing deeper into mystery. What is Clara running from? And what dangerous secret is she caught up in? As the search circles back to Ireland, Lana and Nyah uncover a web of lies and buried truths. But some secrets are deadly, and time is running out.
Karen Fitzgibbon’s second book is another standout success. Never Look Back sees the return of Lana Bowen, who is drawn into the mysterious disappearance of her old friend’s 19-year-old sister, Clara. From the very first page, this multi-layered psychological thriller had me hooked. The storyline is full of twists and turns, with each thread weaving seamlessly into the next to build a truly compelling narrative. The suspense is relentless as you try to unravel why Clara would suddenly abandon her mother and baby at a train station and head off to London. Fitzgibbon masterfully keeps you guessing until the very end. If you’re looking for a tense, well-crafted thriller with emotional depth and a strong sense of place, this is one to add to your TBR. Highly recommended!
Wow this book is fantastic. And I have found another writer and I really enjoy her books. Karen please keep the books coming. This book had me going from page one and I read it all in one sitting. I just had to know what was going on and how the story ended. I highly recommend this book to you all and I know you are going to love it...I sure did.
The story starts when Jenny loses her nineteen year old daughter Clara at the Colbert train station in Limerick. She is holding Clara's young baby and as they walked along the platform and Clara just vanished.
When Clara's brother Nyah finds out that she is missing he calls an old college friend, Lana Bowen, who is not working as a private investigator. He has Lana helping him find his sister. They trace her to London but they always seem to be one step behind. This case is really baffling and keep encountering more and more developments. Who and what is Clara running from? This trail is getting more and more dangerous and they fear they are running out of time. Will they find Clara before it is too late?
Thank you to book sirens for the eARC of this book.
Clara is headed home with her Mam and newborn baby but when her Mam turns back Clara is no where to be found and she’s left with the little baby with no name.
She called Clara’s brother to tell him his sister is missing and then they get a family friend whom is a private investigator involved to help find her.
The store line takes places in Ireland and England. They travel to London following clues as to where Clara has gone to get her back home.
They have learned that she has returned back to Ireland but didn’t go home. She seems to be mixed up in something bad. But you’ll have to read to find out what it could be.
For me personally I think it started off a little slow paced for me. I like books to be a little more fast paced and thrilling to capture me and get me hooked but as I kept going I saw the potential and knew I wanted to keep going and I’m glad I did. It was an enjoyable book once I got more into it.
Everyone has secrets but this family seem to have more than their share. When Clara is off to school in Belfast her mom decides to make a surprise visit. But she is the one surprised! With no explanation she hands her mom a baby and disappears. As they search for her it becomes a pulse pounding storyline with past secrets revealed at a steady pace. The book was actually refreshingly new storyline and twists and turns u never see coming! This book captured me from the first page. I could not put it down. I was hungry to see what happened next to each of the characters. The characters were so well described I could picture them clearly by the end of the book they felt like family. This book had plants of drama, action, romance, secrets. Beware there is domestic abuse and sexual assault which is disturbing but not graphical displayed. I highly recommend this quick beach read!
This tense and fast-paced thriller plunges us straight into student Clara's desperate actions at a train station. Leaving a baby with her unsuspecting mother sets off a frantic search led by her brother Nyah and his PI friend Lana. The narrative expertly weaves a dark and compelling mystery, hinting at a troubled past as Nyah and Lana relentlessly pursue a seemingly ever-elusive Clara in London. I'm grateful to BookSirens and the author for an ARC and this is my honest opinion. Family secrets and shady dealings are revealed as the story unfolds, keeping me reading into the wee small hours. If you enjoy a story with intricate connections and satisfyingly tied-up loose ends, this book more than delivers.
I hadn't read anything by this author before this. Gosh. Taut, suspenseful and utterly gripping. It's very well written (grammatical errors notwithstanding: apostrophising plurals and a couple of instances where the author got the characters' names wrong), but for that, the characters are well drawn and compelling.
Secrets/lies/deception/the path to truth always make for a good psychological thriller, and Fitzgibbon blends these elements perfectly. Set in Limerick, Ireland and London, we have a missing university student with a secret, her mother with a secret, a brother with an unrequited love and a PI who brings it all together…the unrequited love as well!
A tense, psychological thriller you'll find hard to put down. There have to be more 'cases' to be had by Lana, the PI, surely? I do hope so: I would pick them up with relish.
It has been over a year since I read a book start to finish in 1 day, but I could not put this one down. Karen Fitzgibbon is a new author to me. "Never Look Back" had me from the first page. It was written in 3rd person, which I love. Details written so well, I connected with each character and clearly saw what was being described. The storyline was unique. One woman's daughter, away at college. Did she have a child while she was away? What baby did she drop with her Mother? And why did she dissappear? So many questions that play out flawlessly. My 5 stars are reserved, but this book was deserving of them all!
I have just finished reading Never Look Back, by Karen Fitzgibbon, not once but twice. The first reading was very quick, I was gripped and held by the plot and had to get through as quickly as I could. The second time was to savour and enjoy the emotional roller coaster of the rich cast of characters, the author has the knack of making them larger than life; so it’s very easy to get engrossed and feel anger, sorrow, and empathy. I highly recommend this book and am now looking to read Worlds End, which also contains Lana Bowen, Private Investigator, who richly enhanced this novel.
I absolutely loved this book. This is the second book I have read by Karen and it’s amazing.
It’s a fast paced, thriller that had me at the edge of my seat. I loved the chemistry between Nyah & Lana, and how well they worked together to piece together what was happening with Clara.
I love the nothing more than a book that captivates me and I can’t put down and this was certainly one of those books.
I loved the unraveling of secrets & the twists in this book.
I would highly recommend this book. Thanks so much to Karen for a copy of this book, another fantastic book.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I found it to be a really good read. I found it a little bit slow to start but then the pace picked up nicely and I became completely invested in the story. It’s a read filled with suspense and tension . I look forward to reading more by Karen Fitzgibbon
Loved this book. If you love a book full of dark deception and mystery then this is for you. It's full of twists and turns and keeps you hooked from the start.
I'd never read any of Karen's works but now I'm desperate to read her other book the worlds end.
It's fast paced which I love after the first couple of chapters and you just won't be able to out it down.
This novel hooked me from the start with its chilling premise: a mother loses sight of her nineteen-year-old daughter at a train station, only moments after discovering she’s a grandmother. The story follows Clara’s brother, Nyah, and his determined friend-turned-private-investigator, Lana, as they trace Clara’s steps from Limerick to London and back again, uncovering dark twists and family secrets that kept the story alive from start to finish. That said, the pacing felt a little slow at times. Perhaps because I was too intrigued to wait to see how it would unfold! But the writing was strong and the characters well-drawn and if you enjoy psychological thrillers with layered family dynamics and a steady unraveling of secrets, this is one to add to your list.
Thanks to BookSirens, Poolbeg Press and the author for the ARC.
This is a very suspenseful read. It held my attention and I kept wanting to read more. The story is about a young woman who disappears in Northern Ireland leaving a baby behind. Her family and a private investigator search for her in different parts of Northern Ireland, Ireland and England. There are a few surprises as the story progresses and some big surprises as the story ends. The author ties the different story lines up nicely at the end. If you like reading mysteries, you may want to check this book out.
I received a free advance reader copy of this book. The opinion that I express in this review is my own.
