The word "theories" when talking about counseling tends to generate one of two responses. One is a bit of trepidation, and the other is a bit of an all-knowing sneer. Neither is a good response. Those who have propounded the various theories, in most instances, cared about people and desired to genuinely help them with the issues of life. However, they start with faulty assumptions. This small book is my attempt to dispel both of these responses by providing an analytical tool that the average person can understand and use. It will be useful in identifying the assumptions of these various theories, and it is useful to better understand the assumptions of the biblical counseling approach (what the secularist would call our theory) to people helping. It will also display the very different goals of biblical counseling and the rationale for the different outcomes.
