Reluctant Fae Princes #1

Shattered by His Alpha King

Rate this book
Two royal families, one arranged mating, and a love so strong that even war couldn't tear it apart.

I have always known my position in life will be based not only on who I mate with but on my ability to give them an heir. I am a lucky one, though. My father has allowed me to decline my suitors, and as a prince, there is always a suitor, one sure I can give them what they wealth and power. Thanks, but no thanks. I want someone who loves me for me. Or, at least, someone who won't make me feel sick to my stomach just by being in the same room as them.

The day Nemiah seeks an audience with my father, everything changes. No longer do I have a say. He is to be my mate, like it or not. I feel bad for him. I do. Losing a father to violence and being hurtled into his position as king is horrible. But does that mean I have to be the one to fix the political fallout?

Apparently so.

Shattered by His Alpha King is the first book in the Reluctant Fae Princes series. It is an M/M Mpreg royal fae romance with a whole lot of knotty fun, an omega prince born into a world where being an omega defines his place in society, an alpha crowned king after an unexpected tragedy, true love, the struggle for peace, a royal pregnancy, an adorable baby, and a guaranteed happy ever after.

Hey. I hated this. Here's why.

🫃Author names the protagonist and then uses that character's nickname throughout. Just name them the nickname. Or learn Ctrl+V. I'm begging.
🫃 MC's nipples get hard immediately following the mention of his father. That's awesome.
🫃 Worldbuilding that weirdly holds to IRL standards of gender essentialism even though it's A/B/O. There's so much emphasis on "masculinity" and its varying degrees that feels so bizarre, given that... well, there are just different gendery things going on. Like, who gives a fuck who wears pants when men who have dicks can get pregnant in the butt.
🫃 Protagonist is like. So viscerally scathing about "feminine" things, but the worldbuilding implication is that omegas are more disenfranchised than women, and he is an omega. So what's that about. Can we really not fathom a world where being feminine isn't a big wet slap in the face?
🫃Ironically, the protag's disparaging of women and being equated to them reads a lot like books where the female protagonist is bitter about her humanity being stripped away (the obsession with wearing pants, for example), and ends up putting down women and femininity in general to express that bitterness. But since this is a dude, we just get the usual garden variety sexism.
🫃 Oop, just noticed AI in the cover. Yuck!

There are whole swaths of this book where the writing was genuinely good, but you keep getting bashed in the head by a crippling anime addiction while the sky rains down daggers of misogyny. Did I expect better from a book called "Shattered By His Alpha King"? No, because I'm not a big fucking dummy. Did I expect quite so much normal sexism and anime energy? I never do. And I never learn.

I love the cover!
It was nice reading an MPREG that wasn't about wolves. I LOVED the descriptions of the MCS.

The romance was sweet.
Virion was quick to find out Nemiah wasn't a bad guy and didn't want to just breed him. He helped Virion find his voice and see his worth 🥹 He valued Virions ideas. I loved that he was involved in Nemiahs inventions. I'm almost positive it was supposed to be like a phone they invented together.

It was awful how omegas were treated by Virions home kingdom.
I was SO happy when he went back prego and confident. I just know his dick dad hated how loved and respected he was.

My favorite part was when the sun goddess spilled the tea about Virion's siblings IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. I was giggling so hard.
2 bfs, and you're pregnant?!
You lucky dog 🤣 (I'd read their book)

I will say that they talked a bit funny. It took me some getting used to.

HFN
No cheating/OM.
Dual 3rd person pov.
Few spicy scenes.
Mpreg. Pregnancy-birth.
No epilogue.
The ending isn't a cliffhanger, but we found out some juicy stuff. I can't wait for the next one!

"Then smile for me. If nothing else, watching the way you light up when you see me makes me shiver. I owe you a million kisses and will die owing you ten million more"

This should be titled “Lightly Inconvenienced by His Alpha King.”

I’m so confused how that book title and cover got paired with such a low angst book! Why is there a scythe on the cover?? Or carnage?? This was downright fluffy! Their relationship had no shattering!

Angst: 1/5
Spice: 4-5/5

Writing and style are quite good, but the substance is just not there. Main character Virion is very "not like other omegas" to the point where even I'm a little offended IRL about what the author is trying to say about femininity. Again, the writing is great, I just wish the rest was reworked in another round of edits.

I don't like to leave a star rating on works I don't finish, but the AI cover is an automatic No from me.

OMG the steam, the dialogue, the plot that be plotting - This. Book. Is. AMAZING!

It ends on a very minor cliffhanger in the epilogue in the sense that it basically tells you whay the next book will be about but the two MCs love story and their plot arc feels complete and ends in a satisfying way 💜💜 i love that Virion's journey is the opitomy of 'the best revenge is finding happiness'. The love that blossoms between Nemiah and Virion is truly heart warming and their devotion to each other is inspiring and i was overjoyed to read about it! They dont just lust for each other but found deep admiration for each other intellectually and emotionally, and supporting each other endlessly.

The world built feels solid and unique and the dialogue style feels consistent/ elegant and it was really fun to read! The plot is lower angst, no super high drama (no kidnappings of such) which fit this couple well.

As you can tell im getting a little gushy about this one but you would too! Enjoy friends!

"We should get the girls to care for your hair. The way we engage is shamless and does no wonders for their styling efforts." Nemiah offered his most hopeful smile as he pulled up his pants and fastened them. "That's a rather tactful way to say that i look like a well-fucked mess." Virion sighed.

Good read...waiting for bk 2

I enjoyed this book full stop. I picked it on a whim, and I'm glad I did. It's one of those rare books that the story just flows. There's low angst, and there is an actual plot. The people that treated the omega badly realize their error and have to eat crow. So many books fail at this and fail at the character who was ill treated, speaking their minds to their abusers without breaking down. This book doesn't. Many books try to take that higher ground where all is forgiven because the abusers are family. This book is real, and allows the character to help the kingdom but still distance himself. The omega wasn't weak and I like that.

I also liked that there wasn't a long-drawn-out scenario, where the omega has to prove to the alpha that he actually is smart or the alpha ia all gruff and mean before he falls in love. It's something that starts right away, and they start out as equals.
I love the imagery. It's one of the few books I've read lately where the characters in the book are actually described!

This was a really good read. I loved to read Virion and Nemiah’s povs: the magic, the kingdoms, and the world building were superb for an m/m fantasy novel. Their relationship progressed in a healthy and fun way though I think all problems were resolved a bit quickly (the book was short with ~250 pages). So, admittedly I’d have loved for it to be longer, but wanting to read more of a story is not a bad thing to complain about.

I’m looking forward to reading the book about Virion’s half-brother and other stories of this author.

- 1 star right out the gate for an AI cover, which I didn't realize right away. I usually don't read books with AI covers.

The writing itself is not bad. I actually think this writer has a good style. Unfortunately the story itself was bland and dry despite how often moisture is mentioned in this book. The characters were all annoying or generic. And why did the mother have to be inserted into everything? She was boring at best, and weird at her worst.

3/5⭐️ I had medium hopes for this book, but there was really no world building, barely any details on anything and the book was relatively fluffy (not that that’s a bad thing.) This was supposed to be an A/B/O book and there wasn’t really any details to explain the roles of each besides omegas being put into a more feminine role? just made no sense. the two main characters barely had any build up to them actually forming a relationship after their arranged marriage, and the details of their relationship and the smut was lax and boring to me. there seemed to be a larger issue at the end of the book that is obviously meant to lead to a second book in the series, but it just doesn’t catch my interest.

I so enjoyed this. An Alpha wanting better for his people and an Omega wanting a life of his own. This story had all I love about omegaverse books with the added fae twists. I loved the magic and I loved the Alpha. Seeing his love for all that he is, no judgement just love. Had me swooning in a few spots. All he wanted was to love and be loved without the obligation. There was some political stuff happening, and I’m still a little confused about what the suitor and why that happened but overall great story of healing.

For future me:
Dual pov
Strict roles
Omegaverse fun
Relationship kinda before smexy
Diversity in different fae

Not what I was expecting, but in a good way. It's not your standard Dark Fae vs Light Fae story. Virion and Nemiah were engaging characters. Loved the side characters as well. Especially Nemiah's mom. The world-building was well done. Really enjoyed reading this and I'm looking forward to the other books. Great series starter for sure.

A bit rushed (particularly the dinamic between the two MCs flipped out of nowhere) and confusing at some points, especially since it seemed that the pov changed for just one small paragraph, but other than that it had an interesting world building and I would love to read more about it.

📗4 solid stars. Read on 19th Dec, 2025. This was quite preachy. Omegas are treated like trash as usual, reduced to baby making vessels. Virion is non binary becuz omegas aren’t even allowed genders. He’s forced into a political marriage with Nemiah, a night fae, to be publicly “mated” as a truce prize. But hey, at least none of them are virgins to start with. Nemiah thankfully, has opinions about all of this and none of it polite.

🔹Story- 3.8⭐, Characters- 4.5⭐, Sex- 4.8⭐, Epilogue- 0⭐

●Narrated by Jon Andrews. His accent for Nemiah sounded exactly like Dracula’s from the game Dracula: Origins. i’m very sure he’s the voice for it, although there’s no way to confirm. The game no longer works on my laptop.

So, in honour of that, ofc it had to Vlad Dracul as Nemiah, right? hehe

●i loved how the nymphs give Virion his male identity. It’s about choosing who you are instead of having an identity forced onto you. Their culture is a sharp contrast too. Omegas are respected, genders included.

●i liked both characters. Virion hated Nemiah at first, but Nemiah quickly took interest and even vowed to protect his “little rabbit.” He saw Virion as more than property and wanted to bed him out of love, not obligation. He loves Vir fully and is a devoted husband. That said, he’s too stubborn, constantly rejecting Virion’s advances at first.

Loved the Queen (Nemiah’s mom). She’s a true maternal figure and provide some comfort to Vir. But she’s also such a cock blocker, my GAWD.

●Nemiah saving his timid “sugar moth.” Damn. There’s also so much tender love and caring. They matched e/o’s intelligence and love for science.
He mouthed four words that Virion always wanted to hear. “I’m proud of you.”

●This has 3-4 sex scenes. First at 58%. It was worth it! :D Also includes a bathtub heat sex. Descriptive and responsive. We can see, hear everything. Vir is such a loud boy!😏 All the scenes are so well written!

●WOW the final confrontation with the trash father was so satisfying! Vir went full circle and became so much powerful!

“Does it terrify you? That I’m capable?”

Some issues i had:

♦There’s lots of time jumps. Some times weeks and later, 4 months.

♦i’m confused if this is slow burn or insta lust/love. It’s fated mates, so there’s instant pull. But for the 1st half of the book, they don’t even share the same room and stay separate. They hardly spend any time together at all but every time they do meet, it’s pure lust, yet nothing ever happens because they keep getting cock blocked LMAO. Their bond forms over weeks & months via time jumps, but love, esp Nemiah’s, happened fast.

♦Virion’s father and family in general are just filthy trash.

♦There must be a public mating which Virion absolutely hated. And it includes a “cleansing” period of 1 month where Virion was kept captive so as to “purify” him.

Epilogue is not about this couple and their newly born child but to set up the next book.

Better story than the title implies

Certainly not a book that I would usually pick up simply because of the title. Such an over blown title implies that this is going to be some big omega and alpha thing with fated mates and angtsy misunderstandings and dramatic overtures that don't add to the story. While there certainly was some flower language and little bit of family drama, it was actually a fascinating slow burn type romance with an arranged marriage at the core that turned into much more. (Also I would like to say that at no point did it appear the omega was 'shattered' by his alpha king, and in fact they don't even refer to each other as consort and king, but I digress).

Virion is an omega which essentially makes him 'useless' except for marrying off, though his father the king hasn't done so yet. When he finally does get married off it's to the Drashili, the night fae, with culture and customs completely different to Virion's home of Liaberos and the sun fae. Nemiah is the new king of the Drashili and has resigned himself to this arranged marriage to start rebuilding his kingdom after the mess his father left. Both had hoped to marry for love and were resigned to this civil union, but their connection shows that they could have more if they tried.

This is a bit of a slow burn romance as between the new place and the change of customs there is much for each of them to take in. Though Virion is very opinionated and smart, he has spent his life pushed aside and silenced, which is at first how he acts in his new marriage. Nemiah works on wooing his new husband but affection has not been given freely in his own life and he is working on how to show it to this man he wants to woo. They have to figure each other out while still running a kingdom, which is a really nice pace for this romance. While there are certainly sexy time scenes they work well within the story and progress the relationship nicely.

The setup for this story is interesting because the next book could well be many years in the future following characters not yet known or introduced. This pairing makes significant changes for several kingdoms, but it could be that the next people it follows are from years down the line, or they could be from kingdoms not yet visited. It will be interesting to see what direction this series follows and what other things it will bring to this world.

This book has everything you need from an evil father to nymph handmaidens. Virion is a true delight with his fair skin, hair and pink eyes and fae of the sun but cannot pray to his goddess due to being an omega even though he is a prince. This book kind of hits on some of the issues of today with how Vir is made to dress feminine but prefers male dress and how he is perceived to be lesser than due to his gender/status. He is made to feel like a burden especially after the death of his mother. Nemiah is now king of his land and wants to end all the wars his father thought necessary. He wants peace and to work on his inventions to restore his land to the way it should be before his father's reign. He is a night fae that honors the moon goddess. When these two get together, I wondered how they could ever see eye to eye as they were so different. However, those differences made them so much stronger and to say Nemiah is a softie for his mate is an understatement. When they touch horns, it is always so sweet. It was a good read, and I cannot wait to see if there is more to follow because this is another very interesting world created by Lilo Quie. I can't decide whom I like more though, Queen Kiara or the nymphs. The Queen is someone that should never be crossed especially when it involves her family. The nymphs are just joyous and full of mischief and fun as well as comfort and empathy. There are other characters that I truly enjoyed as well, little Sima comes to mind, that I would like to follow and see how they turn out with the care and open-minded guidance the Drashili give so freely.

I really didn’t like some parts of this story even though some parts showed signs of brilliance. Virion is a sun fae omega prince who is married off by his father to King Nemiah the moon fae in a political and business move on both sides. The story progresses as you’d expect - Virion is special, fated to save both nations and blessed with many gifts from the sun god. I enjoy this arc usually even if it’s a bit predictable.

What stumped me is why their sexuality concerned so many people and was such a big thing in the book. For example (and I’m not saying it was right), Virion’s father had misgendered him his whole life and it seemed to be something that ground on Virion everyday, but that strikes me as something someone in the 21st century earth would think not this fantastical world - it would be the equivalent of women letting sexism annoy them every single day - like yes, it’s annoying and wrong but people are adaptable and to live there’s always a degree of adaptation and back-and-forth between outrage at the injustice and acceptance.

What really sealed the 2*s for me though was how annoying and busybody-ish Nemiah’s mother was. I do not read romances to have mothers-in-law so involved even down to their intimate life. No thanks.

It was on average an okay story but I find I’m left highly dissatisfied.

I really enjoyed this story and could have easily finished it in one sitting if it wasn't for life interrupting. It was a pretty interesting world that the author started writing about. I don't know how much has been planned out but it would be super cool if the author included a map in the next book. I love them as a companion to high fantasy books.

I liked both of the main characters. I liked Virion from the start but it took me longer to like Nemiah. Once he was finally willing to communicate his wants, needs, hopes and so on with Virion, I started liking him. The bad characters (jerks, not poorly written) were Virion's family. His dad and brother especially. His sister seemed indifferent to him.

The thing that makes this a 4 star read for me, is the title. To me, it implies they will have a rough relationship or even that Nemiah might be forceful with Virion and that just isn't the case. Yes, they may have had a rough start but they were strangers and that's understandable. I think in the end, I feel that Nemiah rescued Virion more than shattered him.

3.5 Starts. You know, for a book barely 200 pages long, there are waayy too many "world building" words that I simply see NO use for and that took me OUT of the story instead of adding to the experience. I did not need the world "thalm" (which is effin hard to pronounce even in my head) to be said so many times and in so many ways. Especially in a ABO forced marriage/MPREG scenario. I think this book SHOULD have been at leadt 500 pages long to properly flash out all the characters and developments but we kinda got the summerised, rushed version of it. The autor did say it was their "first time" with this, but i am not sure which part they meant because there were too many things just thrown in into this, again, very SHORT book. I didnt feel engaged, didnt think the father "got his just desserts", cuz the scenes were too short and kept switching from one thing to the next, not having any time to synch my feelings to anyone or one point. Also it was a cliffhanger for no apparant reason than to obviously sell another book. So yeah...Really sad cause the cover looked great but not looking forward to another dissapointment so will abstain from book 2

I loved this book. Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Virion and Nemiah. I was so sad for how Vir was treated and viewed by his own people- his family. I loved that though Nemiah did not like King Alluin or their customs, and had no real interest in his mate-to-be initially, he was careful to treat Vir with as much kindness and consideration as he could. Virion was expecting the worst in the male he was to be mated to, and although timid and repressed from his own family's treatment, began to see how well a match he and Nemiah would be. I loved how their relationship formed and how these two bonded. I also loved many of the supporting characters- Kiara, Nemiah's mother, and especially the nymphs Ivy, Clover, and Artemis. They were a lot of fun and I could practically see them in my mind.

The blessings with the Goddess was fascinating- and satisfying. I hope we get a book or hear more about the Vir's sister and her lovers, as I love triads (and redemption stories).

I've read so many of Lilo Quie's books, but this one is my favorite so far! I can't wait until the next! A great start to a wonderful new series. 5 stars.

This was sweet for the most part, but I did find it hard to read sometimes. The writing just felt a bit off to me. There were times when it was almost like the POV switched for a sentence or two, and I had to reread to make sure who was talking. I also thought there were times when a character's action felt weird. They may have a facial expression of smirking or annoyance, but what they thought or said didn't convey that. It could just be me.

I'd hoped Virion's father would get more of a comeuppance than he did as well. That annoyed me.

A few things brought it down a couple of stars, but it was still sweet and held my interest, which is saying a lot nowadays, given that I haven't read many new books in a while.

Based on the way things ended, it looks like the series might include an MMF book. Or maybe it would end up MM, hopefully, because I'm not reading any MF books anymore, and I liked it well enough to continue more in the series.

"Shattered by His Alpha King" received TWO AND A HALF stars.

I enjoyed the story and the characters.

The writing was a bit off putting for me, though. Many sentences were structured in a flowery-type of way and I had to reread them 2-3 times to understand their meaning. I would’ve preferred clear, concise wording that didn’t drag me out of the story every other paragraph.

The novel gained *stars* for these items:

* gained for: "The book caught my interest in the first five pages."

1/2 * gained for: "I thought about the book when I was forced to set it down and re-enter society."

1/2 * gained for: "There were no info dumps, poor writing, or copy edit mistakes that jerked me out of the story."

1/2 * gained for: "I was sad when the book ended. I wanted more!"

The novel failed to gain stars for this item:

NO STAR gained for: "That's it. I'm hooked on this author. I will automatically try anything she/he/they writes."

I really enjoyed this book! It has great world-building and a story that pulled me in. Virion is a fair omega prince who has always been treated as "less than" in a kingdom that worships the Sun Goddess. When his father offers him in an arranged marriage to Nemiah, the king of a dark kingdom that worships the Moon Goddess, he is not given a choice, but he wonders if it might be better than where he is at. Nemiah, an inventor, wants to make a deal with his magic-powered train in order to get funding to lead his kingdom out of war.

Virion has always been underestimated and disadvantaged. In his new home, he is valued, appreciated, and he able to contribute to the kingdom and his husband's work. Through courtship, marriage, and love the two males experience passion, respect, and blessings from their Goddesses. I enjoyed this book so much that I plan to jump right in to read the next book in the series!

More like loved by his Alpha King

Book one of The Reluctant Fae Princes this book had me involved from the beginning as poor Omega Prince Virion is so downtrodden and such a sympathetic character. I love everything that Lilo Quie writes as there is so much heart to her stories. The omega married off to an “evil” Alpha is a fairly common trope, but once Ms Quie gets a hold of it rises to new heights due to her wonderful imagination. She gives us a wonderful new world to explore and great characters and stories about dark and light and love and hate. I just love how empowered Virion is once he marries Nemiah and travels to his kingdom. The way that Ms. Quie slips in her trademark humor helps the story along and lightens even the worst bits of the story. As usual with her books I read it too fast and now want to read it again.

Another fantastic creation from Lilo

I find everything that Lilo writes fascinating. The worlds she creates are rich and detailed and the characters thetype that you fall in love with immediately, whether they're dragons or demons or vampires or shifters. This series is no different.
Lilo treats us to fae characters this time around, set in a society that is just discovering mechanisation and having their own industrial revolution, albeit one backed by magic, and it is so novel for a fantasy romance.
From the title and the cover, I was expecting a completely different story but I loved what I got. An arranged marriage that is written in the stars and where both partners find an equal, a partner, a soulmate and their one true love. There was no shattering involved, just a bad parent (Virion's) and a good parent (Nemiah's) and goddesses who know everything.
P.S. Lilo, I miss Cinder.

"The sun no longer held dominion over Virion. He answered only to the moon and his mate."

This is book 1 in a new series by Lilo Quie called Reluctant Fae Princes. I found this on Booksprout and loving Lilo Quie's books the way I do, I couldn't wait to read it. This is a little bit of a departure from some of the previous books I've read... seriously, there are no animals or shifters but we do have MPREG!!!

This was a great start to a new series and I loved the setting for this new world that's been created. It almost has a steampunk vibe with the metal, magical, and machines. I can't wait to see where the series goes, it appears to be one of her series that's guaranteed to suck you in.

Fair moon lily, tadger, lover's oil, sunderleaf pipe, mechathalmalurgical, Silver Prince, sloshy, Moon & Sun - night & day

For Lilo Quie's early "foray" into the fantasy/romance genre, this is a very good story. Her world-building is brilliant and spectacular. So many details were covered to create the marvelous imagery and scenery. The storyline is deftly woven and crafted into a balanced, seamless, and well-paced tale. The melding of magic and technology is genius in a developing civilization. The characters are well-developed, well-casted, and most of them likeable. I immensely enjoyed reading this and feel mostly satisfied. There's a cliffhanger of the overall story. I passionately recommend this book!
