Thea Devine is the author of eighteen historical romances and four novellas, including her contributions to the Brava anthologies Captivated, Fascinated, and, most recently, All Through the Night. Devine lives with her husband of 35 years in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
A fascinating story with more twists and turns, that seem to be this author's forte. Angelene is the only daughter of an angry and resentful mother, Josie. Leaving a pampered life as the only child of a wealthy couple, in favor of a romantic escape, which led to a hard scrabble life, four children, and abandonment by the gambler she loved. Josie makes a living in a criminal enterprise that is revealed to Angelene when she returns home from ten years in a convent school. Horrified at what she has discovered, Angel makes secret plans to escape, which eventually ends with her rescue by a man who would have preferred to keep to himself. That is just the start of a complicated and intriguing story.
Sorry ... the middle (most of the latter half?) dragged. But the denouement was rather quick and efficient(?). The villains got their due ... and later, so did Rake and Angelene. They each made peace with their errant parents, in their own way. And they took care of any barriers to their future happiness.
Some moments of heat, plus an “Eyes Wide Shut” type scenario ... 😳
Maybe I should take a break and enjoy some tamer fare ...
DNF but I gave it 1 star bc could not continue after 3 chapters. The main character comes off as a spoiled brat & the way she acts towards her special needs siblings is horrible. I will not waste any more of my time on this book
