Wow! I can’t remember the last time I read a book in one day (I finished it yesterday). This book had me so engrossed in the pages, I didn’t want to do anything else. I really adored this book!
This story starts off with Alfred “Alfie” Logan, being interviewed by an officer in Nassau, The Bahamas. Alfie is accused of cheating and winning millions at the roulette table. From there, we then get to read his composition notebooks 📓 of Alfie’s life story and how this moment in his life came to be.
Alfie’s mother died when he was a young boy, and right before she passed away, she let him know about a special gift that he possesses. Alfie, like her, has the ability to go back and change any moment in his life only once. So basically, he can do anything “twice”. But after that moment is changed, he’s stuck with that new version going forward.
Therefore, because Alfie has this special ability to go back and do things a second time, he writes in his composition notebooks daily to keep track of his daily activities and meetings. He also wants to make sure he doesn’t repeat or try to repeat something unintended.
This book was thought- provoking and often emotional. While Alfie was able to get a second chance his whole life, the only thing he couldn’t get a second chance at was love. Once you lost that chance, it was gone… 😭
“Suspicion and belief cannot share the same bed.”
This was another winner from Mitch Albom that I highly recommend reading. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much, that I think I’m going to read it Twice. 😉

Another Good Morning America Book Club pick found its way to my Little Free Library Shed by way of donation. This one was just released last month (October, 2025).
“What is it about love that makes us think we can tame it, when all the while it is taming us?”
There is no denying that Mitch Albom is a master storyteller.
In this novel, we find Alfie, our main protagonist, in the hotseat being grilled by a detective who is convinced he did not win two million dollars legitimately from the local casino in the Bahamas which Alfie then wired to an unknown benefactor.
As Alfie sits calmly on the other side of the table, he attempts to explain to Detective LaPorta that he has not stolen the money, and that if he read his manuscript, better known as ‘the composition book’ addressed to his Boss, it would explain everything to him. And, as the story unfolds, the more skeptical the detective becomes. And, the more curious we become as readers.
Of course, as readers, we are given the opportunity to suspend disbelief. And, as we do, we are led into a tale of magical realism, a bit of time travel, a love story, sprinkled with incredible second chances.
“A gift. …to do things twice in …life. …go back in time, and, redo events.”
And, it is the second chances that keep readers truly engaged in attempting to discover what the mystery of Alfie is all about, just as the detective is hoping to get him behind bars for the perceived “stealing” of the casino’s money.
But will the detective succeed? Or, will something convince him that Alfie is truly innocent?
And, who is the Boss, that Alfie is writing to in the composition book?
Readers will be pulled in a variety of directions as they attempt to unravel the mystery of Alfie, along with Detective LaPorta, as he searches for answers, too. What will we all discover by the end?
This story is...Compelling. Lovely. Thought-full. Spell-binding. Unputdownable. As well as Magical. Hearts will undoubtedly be tugged by this easy-to-read, quick, page-turning tale. Have your Kleenex handy.

Mitch Albom’s new novel, “Twice,” is about a man with the miraculous ability to travel back to any point in his life and make a different choice. A few hours after starting “Twice,” I knew exactly which choice I would make differently.
But alas, here we are.
The story begins in a police station in the Bahamas. Alfie Logan has been detained for questioning after winning more than $2 million correctly playing three straight roulette numbers at a casino. Detective Vincent LaPorta, an experienced investigator of gambling fraud, suspects foul play.
Instead of defending himself, though, Alfie produces a thick handwritten notebook that details the love story of his life. The detective tells him to read it aloud. Whenever Alfie flags, Detective LaPorta orders him to “keep reading.”
That part, at least, rings true: This is the kind of novel that a guard in a locked room must force you to keep reading.

Words cannot express what Mitch Albom’s novels mean to me and my wife. Not only is Mitch an extremely talented writer, he is an incredible human being. I had the opportunity to attend an event on his book tour for his latest novel, TWICE. I read the novel before attending and rated it four stars. Hearing him speak about the layers to his life and thinking behind the written word makes me want to bump it to a five.
All of Mitch Albom’s books provide the reader with the opportunity to reflect on their life and consider the life lessons explored in the novel. Twice is no exception. There is a lot to contemplate. If you could have a “redo” for any or all events in your life, would you?
Twice is a novel about First Loves, second chances, living with scars and regrets, finding one’s authentic self, finding joy in life, and being present in the moment. A memorable quote I liked was, “Suspicion and Belief cannot be in the same bed.”
I love elephants and loved the role of Lah-lou the elephant. My favorite character was Yaya. She stole my heart and broke it. I loved how Superman was used as a metaphor in the novel. This novel reminds the reader to cherish and make the most of the time we have with those we love.

In a Nutshell: A magical realism novel about a man who gets two chances at everything in his life. Intriguing storyline, decent exploration of human psychology. Flawed lead character, too many plot holes. Needs much suspension of disbelief. Not sure if I can recommend this with gusto, though it will certainly work for many readers. This is an outlier review.

It is said that our choices reveal who we are and our choices also make us what we are. But what if you get two chances at every choice? This is a great concept that deserved a more cohesive story with fewer logical inconsistencies.
Bookish Yays:
✌🏻 The exploration of human psychology through Alfie’s and other characters’ personalities. Many situations might lead you to wonder what you would have done in their place. (In most cases, I won't have done the same thing as the characters.)
✌🏻 The indirect message that redoing something doesn’t necessarily offer the desired result.
✌🏻 A few thought-provoking quotes: simple language, but deep impact.
✌🏻 The cover. Perfect for the story.
Bookish Okays:
🤞🏻 Alfie. A complicated character. It’s not that he is unlikeable (which would have been fine), but rather, he is presented as likeable despite his red flags (which feels like a glossing-over of his behavioural issues). Some of his stupid decisions can be pardoned, but some feel like major flaws. I guess your liking of him would depend on how you feel about his actions. I found some of them tough to ignore.
🤞🏻 The multiple narrative perspectives. Offers an interesting variety, but the POV from Alfie’s “composition book” is almost as elaborate as a novel, albeit addressed to someone specific. This person is only called ‘Boss’, but after a point, it is easy to guess their identity.
🤞🏻 The mixture of multiple genres: magical realism, time travel, drama, and romance. Not perfectly executed, but keeps things interesting.
Bookish Nays:
👊🏻 The concept of saying ‘twice’ to return to an earlier time point. I could write an entire essay on the logical loopholes in the implementation of this idea in the book. Of course, one does need some suspension of disbelief in SFF genres, but in this case, the plot keeps contradicting its own claims.
👊🏻 The “romance”. A lot of rubbish gets done in this story in the guise of love. We barely get to know Alfie’s love interest Gianna as we see her only through his smitten eyes. But even the limited glimpse of her personality made it tough for me to root for them to be together. Gianna deserved better.
👊🏻 One key scene involving someone’s passing and someone’s resultant grief. Alfie doesn’t redo it ‘twice’ (for his own reasons.) I just didn’t agree with his rationale and found this selfish choice impossible to forgive.
👊🏻 A small scene involves a therapist revealing intimate client details to an outsider. Unethical, unpardonable, unrealistic.
👊🏻 The ending. Twisty, but has such a giant plot-hole that the entire premise collapses into itself.
🎧 The Audiobook Experience:
The audiobook, clocking at 6 hrs 24 min, is narrated by the author himself. While I am not usually a fan of authors narrating their own books, Albom is an exception. He does a commendable job, and after a point, I even forgot that he was not a professional narrator.
The author’s note is a treat to read. Mitch Albom is a gem of a human being, and his notes are always straight from the heart. I am happy my audio version included it.
Overall, the concept is definitely intriguing, even if it isn’t a unique one. Unfortunately, my experience of its execution wasn't as enthusiastic as I thought it would be. I could have let go of some fallacies, but when the entire premise stands on a shaky foundation and self-contradicting construction, the structure is bound to collapse. I would still have rated it higher, but the ending sullied even the positive feelings I had.
Almost all of my friends who’ve read this book have rated it 4+ stars, so I am very much an outlier in my opinion. Please do read other reviews before you take a call on this book.
I have often struggled with what I call ‘heart books’ – books to be read strictly with the heart after turning the head off. If you can do this easily, if you can enjoy emotions and ignore logic, this book is for you.
2.5 stars. (I would have rounded up if the ending were better.)

Such a unique read! It almost read like a short story, but MAN was it packed with life lessons, meaningful moments, & beautiful writing. Short but powerful! Highly recommend if you want a little read that will make you feel big things!

What a delightful read!
A marvellous break from reality.
This was my 6th book by this author.
If you like travel time or magical realism you may enjoy this book.
Who would not love to have the ability of having a second chance?
The story, which was sweet, sometimes heartwarming or heartbreaking, but not sappy or overly dramatic, has a development that was enthralling from the beginning to the end. I could have easily read it in one sitting.
The characters were lovable and sometimes funny.
The writing was simple and clear, but I really loved the storytelling.

This is a beautifully written, fantasy romance novel with a unique premise, and a gratifying conclusion. I listened to the audiobook, which is marvelously narrated by the author. I especially enjoyed hearing his personal insights in his own voice.

I enjoy anything Mitch Albom writes, so I was looking forward to reading Twice. I think it's his best one yet, and that is saying a lot.
I love a good time travel story and this one delivered in spades. There was a Groundhog Day feel to it, even though Alfie could redo a day or could even go further back in time to change something in his life. It also made me think of Click in some ways. Alfie was a sympathetic character and I liked him, but sometimes I didn't like the choices he made for things that he wanted to change. I don't think he really understood how erasing something for himself would also affect everyone else in his orbit. Other times, I understood why he had to make the changes he did.
This was just a really thought-provoking novel and it kept me riveted the entire time. There were some interesting, and sometimes heartbreaking, surprises along the way, so the story never felt predictable. I wanted to see where things would go and what would happen next for Alfie. I felt completely invested.
Definitely a worthwhile read. If I had more time, I'd read it twice! (Too bad I don't have Alfie's power or I could go back and read it again, but I would want my mind erased too so that I could enjoy it without knowing anything that happened.)

I love a good time travel story and this one delivered in spades. There was a Groundhog Day feel to it, even though Alfie could redo a day or could even go further back in time to change something in his life. It also made me think of Click in some ways. Alfie was a sympathetic character and I liked him, but sometimes I didn't like the choices he made for things that he wanted to change. I don't think he really understood how erasing something for himself would also affect everyone else in his orbit. Other times, I understood why he had to make the changes he did.

this was cute! v quick on audio and on the lighter side which is what i was needing at the moment after a heavier read. i love time travel so the concept was fun: what if you could redo a situation twice—but only twice?

Whenever Mitch Albom releases a book, I just can’t seem to stay away from it. After making me cry with The Five People You Meet in Heaven, I knew Mitch had me in his clutches. I’ve been a fan ever since.
This got me thinking: if I could do one thing twice, would everything be better, happier, and easier for me? Would I take the second chance to erase and redo the past? Or would I use this supernatural power to live the same life twice? I don’t know. I’d probably be like Alfie—redo my mistakes, try again to get something right, and maybe spare myself the heartache of failure. But then, would I ever truly live?
Such brilliant characters and premise. Albom has a simple way of telling a story; he doesn’t use big words or overly poetic phrases and monologues. His narrative always hits the spot—effortlessly.

The book begins in 1978 during a biblical rainstorm in Philadelphia. A young woman appears in the chaos, clutching something mysterious, and we file that under "suspiciously important" before the story whisks us forty years ahead to a sweaty police station in the Bahamas.
There sits Alfie, a silver-haired man who looks like he has seen too much and learned too little. A detective named Vincent LaPorta is interrogating him about a casino stunt: Alfie walked into the roulette room, called three perfect numbers in a row, and walked out two million dollars richer. LaPorta, chewing on his Life Savers, wants to know how the trick was done. Alfie insists it wasn't a trick at all. It was, he says, a "love story." Which, in Albom’s universe, is always code for "philosophical gymnastics with misty eyes at the end."

Twice is a classic Mitch Albom production, complete with sentimentality in a tailored suit. It is polished, painless, and engineered to make you feel profound without needing to think too hard.
Albom turns what could have been a metaphysical puzzle into a parable about regret, forgiveness, and the illusion of control. It is half philosophy, half greeting card, with a plot that moves like a sermon disguised as science fiction.
What works is the concept. The idea of reliving a moment and fixing it speaks to every tired soul who has ever replayed a conversation in the shower. Alfie's power is wish fulfillment for the anxious and the nostalgic, people who think their lives would improve if only they had one more try.
Albom stretches that wish until it snaps, showing that repetition does not create wisdom, only a prettier version of the same mistakes. The message is simple and cruel: a second chance is useless if you never learned from the first.
What drags it down is Albom's habit of talking like a life coach at a funeral. Every moral is polished until it squeaks. The dialogue often sounds like fortune cookies written by someone who reads too much Paulo Coelho. Yet, buried in the syrup, there are moments of genuine insight and beauty.
Every decision comes with a shadow, and even divine editing cannot remove it. Love and death remain untouchable, the two plot points no one can revise. Accept your failures, forgive yourself, and stop pretending perfection is a moral virtue.

I enjoyed this story so so much!!! The magical element was so fascinating and I loooved how the author was able to show the perks/consequences rather than tell. Loved the structure and loved loved loved the ending!!!!!

I'm gutted that I didn't like this as much as I wanted to. I'm a huge fan of Mitch Albom, and his previous works (including the beautiful Five People You Meet in Heaven) will always be a staple on my bookshelf.
However, I struggled with Twice. I didn't feel connected to Alfie, the main character, and didn't feel the emotional impact that I have come to associate with Mitch Albom's work. I enjoyed the concept of being able to repeat certain choices and events, but Alfie's story didn't resonate very closely with me.

Alfie Logan has a gift. He can go back in time and relive things - he gets to do things twice. But there are stipulations - he can only change things that he has personally experienced, he can't stop people from dying, and he can't make someone fall in love with him twice. The book is the story of all the things that Alfie has undone, the decisions that impacted how he lived his life, and his love of Gianna.
This book was simply amazing. I was so invested in the characters of the book - Alfie, Gianna, Yaya, even Detective LaPorte. I cried tears of both happiness and sadness. In true Mitch Albom fashion, it was an easy read and held my attention throughout the novel. It was hard to put down.
And like all of Mitch Albom's books, it made me think. Would I redo some things in my life and make different decisions? The butterfly effect basically says that small decisions can make big impacts on your life. This novel is a book about the butterfly effect and trying to understand the different courses Alfie's life takes based on his first decision, and by his choosing, his different choice when he relives the moment. I finished this book several days ago, and I'm still pondering these questions.

Perhaps The Best Book I Read This Year!
Twice is another beautifully written and emotionally rich novel from Mitch Albom—one that lingers in your heart long after you’ve turned the final page. A few people whose opinions I respect loved this book, so I feel kind of bad that I just couldn’t connect with it. I never felt like I was living inside the story or knew the characters. The author told it in an emotionally removed way, briefly sketching outlines of each character and didn’t bring the reader inside each scene with sensory details. Maybe he took a swipe at some here and there but nothing consistent. Also, the premise was confusing. The main character, Alfie, had the magical power of being able to experience do overs. If he didn’t like the way his life was going he could say the word “twice” and return to the moment when events had begun to take a turn for the worse. But in trying to correct his perceived mistakes he made worse ones. There were way too many do overs and everything got really confusing. Other people were involved in all these scenarios. Did their lives change irrevocably as well? It’s supposed to be a love story but I wasn’t feeling it. Fortunately this was a quick read so I can move on to a book I’d rather read.

4.25 [4.5 for first two-thirds; 3.5 for ending] Ŵhat most of us wouldn’t give for a handful of do-overs. How about a lifetime of them?
Albom has done it again. “Twice” is a beautifully written tale built around an intriguing premise. This touching love story oozes with magical realism, enticing readers to think inward about what choices they might make if they had second chances that allow them to change decisions both large and small. I found myself pondering “what-if” scenarios a half-dozen times during this breezy read.
Sadly, the ending didn’t quite work for me — and I’m not exactly sure why (no spoilers here). Nevertheless, “Twice” is a dreamy journey that is likely to produce both chuckles and tears.

In TWICE, Mitch Albom has crafted a compelling story about one man’s fascinating journey through a life of second chances. The story is filled with love, heartbreak, and valuable life lessons. It will make you reflect on those moments in your life you wish you could redo. Albom's writing remains as inspiring and enjoyable as ever. He makes you think and feel deeply at the same time.

5 stars. *GMA Book Club - Oct. ‘25 pick. What a unique, magical little gem where a mix of time-travel, second chance and love will tug at your heart, keep you misty-eyed, and thinking about this story long after turning its last page. An unputdownable, absorbing read. Do recommend. Pub. 10/7/25

This story was magical at its core, magical realism if you want a genre, but the magic in the pages was more than a genre description. Twice was all about love, parental love, platonic and romantic love. Alfie, the protagonist, had a gift or a curse, depending on how you see it, to be able to replay an event in his life twice.
There was an echo of sliding doors, a side order of time travel but all along Alfie and his focus on Gianna ruled the pages. I never quite knew what bend in the road was going to be next but Alfie was ever endearing and as a reader, you could not help but wish for Alfie to find happiness.
There was sadness, joy and melancholy in these pages; I felt all of these emotions, up and down, back and forth...twice. There is nothing quite like this story.
I inhaled this book on a Sunday evening, not stopping until the pages were done. I felt a bittersweet satisfaction on finishing but also, my heart felt pretty full. I highly recommmend this as a read but also as a bookish gift to others.

Wow Mitch Albom does it again!!!! He never disappoints!! I just finished and I’m crying! That was the best ending in any book ever! Let me say I hate romance and rarely like magical realism which this book has both. But it’s Mitch! I loved every minute of this story!!!
Alfie can go back in time at any time for a re do but only once. And he does a lot!!! But there are lessons in this and some funny moments.
There are times he goes back and I’m like wow perfect and times when I’m like I’m so glad I can’t do this what a mess!

It’s probably been over 10 years since my last Mitch Albom book and I mostly picked this one up on a whim. But it’s made me realize that I need to go back to his other books now and dive into his library of works.
Such a huge fan of this and so glad it was one of my last books of the year.

I loved this story. It’s not quite among my favorites of the author’s but very close (Albom has earned several 5-star ratings from me in the past). I especially loved the ending of Twice because it caught me by surprise, squeezed my heart, and made me tear up. The story made me think a lot about my own life. What would I change, given the option? I could think of quite a few things. But then I would think of the consequences of those changes. Who I might not know. Who I might not have had a chance to love. What experiences I might have missed. When I reached the end, I even went back to the beginning and listened to the early parts of the story, hearing them again with new appreciation.
