First Strike: A Military First Contact Series

Reasonably good. Reminds me a bit of the Terran Fleet Command Saga by Tori L Harris, but not in a specific way.
The space battles are ok, but not as good as Black Fleet by Joshua Dalzelle. Not as detailed and doesn't feel as realisticly depicted. The missile effective range seems a bit hand wavy. To be realistic the effective range should be significantly increased when the target or the firing ship is moving more quickly towards each other or when firing at orbital or static targets.
Not sure if it's a goof or the author extremely underestimates the speed of rail gun slugs (at a range of 1000km a character had time to say a few words between seeing the shot and his ship being struck - current rail guns in atmosphere shoot projectiles many times faster than that).
