A SEASIDE SCANDAL
(Change of Heart #2)

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~A reckless swim, a ruined reputation...an unexpected romance. Miss Alice Kellaway never expected her peaceful seaside holiday to turn into a battle for a gentleman’s affections…

“Alice Kella-way-Alice Croft-was impossible to hate. I had tried, but all it had done was leave me endlessly frus-trated. Loving her would be much easier.”

-A SEASIDE SCANDAL, is such a delightful story with such heart! I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent within. From the first meet, to the witty humor and banter, to tender swoony moments, and to the depth this story has, was beautiful. Watching dear characters grow, appreciate, and fight for what their dear hearts want most of all was excellent. Despite many obstacles, misunderstandings, doubt, and reluctance to trust, there is a sliver of hope shinning through, and leads to dear possibilities, belonging, and joy. I love how this dear story is filled wonderfully with such light, care, and goodness. It absolutely is worth the dear read, and has me so intrigued of what’s to come, with a changed heart! 🙌🏻📚🩷

“I don’t wish to withhold anything from you any longer. I don’t wish to rob you of a single one of your dreams. I adore you. I love you.”

•Content: betrayal/lies, strained relationships, gossiping/meddling ton, mild almost peril scene, no language, no violence, severe autism-handled with such grave, and love, kisses only.

“It is not the grandeur of a gift that truly matters. It is the intent. The effort.”

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

“Perhaps we should both stop making assumptions about one another.”

““If I had nearly as much bravery as you, I would have told you I loved you long before you felt the need to fight for my affections. I can assure you that from this point forward, you shall never have to fight for them again."

I absolutely adored A Seaside Scandal.

Things I loved:

A hilarious “cute met” that had me laughing out loud.

Forced proximity, enemy to lover vibes, one bed

A funny, kind, sarcastic, patient, protective MC

That first kiss

Alice’s mom

Jonathan’s sweet sister

Things I loved that I normally hate, but worked so well in this book:

Instant attraction, I didn’t mind this, and I think it might have been because it was followed by Alice and Jonathan becoming “enemies”, so the story had a feel of friends to enemies to lovers, and I loved it!

Misunderstanding and wrong assumptions between FMC and MC. I normally hate this, but I loved how even through each argument the two main characters had a part that still longed to be together and fix things. For one example, Johnathan avoiding Alice because that’s what she said she wanted, then Alice finding a way to draw Johnathan out because she doesn’t really want to avoid him completely, then Johnathan being confused because he was doing what he was told, it just reminded me so much of when my husband and I were newlyweds and we (mostly me) had a lot of growing up to do, and learning to communicate better. And then the sweet moments when they would make peace for a bit. So many flash backs, lol. It made me want to pick a fight with my husband just so we could make up 🤣🤣 the fact that it was 1 am when I finished this book did deter me though, prolly thankfully, my dear husband would have been so confused.

Alice had a lot of growing up to do, she was prideful and had a temper, but again it worked so well here and was balanced by her kind heart and wanting to make things work.

Things I didn’t love:

Nothing, I loved it all. All of it. Very surprisingly so.

Content: clean, no spice, no swearing, no violence

I really enjoyed this. Jonathan and Alice’s “meet cute” was so funny and they immediately had great banter and a genuine connection. Then Alice’s “best friend” ruined it with jealousy and manipulation. I wish the miscommunication had been resolved sooner as the second half dragged a bit. However, Jonathan’s worries over only being loved for his fortune, Alice’s feelings of loneliness trapped in a marriage of convenience with a man she actually loves, and her relationship with Jonathan’s sister were all well done and kept me reading. The characters were complex and there were many heart wrenching and heart warming moments. The seaside setting was great. Charlotte needed to be banned from their home forever though.

I will definitely read Edmund’s story if he gets one.

Miss Newbold delivers another wonderful regency romance. I loved the instant spark between the two main characters. I also loved how she tied in Margaret’s character and the beautiful tribute to her own brother. I read the other two books in this series many years ago when they first came out and I think I better reread the updated ones!

Love is a choice :)

This was a fun and sweet story of a misunderstanding turned love story. It also included themes of forgiveness, trusting others despite the difficulty and loving people in spite of their differences. Really cute story!

Beautiful Story

Such a beautiful story. I love Alice’s innocence and kindness. Her genuineness was what first won Jonathan over. But oh my goodness her BFF was horrendous. I found myself saying “oh no she didn’t” multiple times. Unfortunately by standing up for herself, Alice just seemed to cause more problems.
The scandal was perfect and had this whole I’m mad I can’t stand you but I want to kiss you kind of tension like Elizabeth and Darcy had in the rain when she rejected him. Yeah it was awesome.
I love Alice‘s family. She had the best mom ever. I can’t remember reading a regency romance that had such a grounded, kind mother. I love the journey that we got to see for Jonathan and Alice and how they got together over all the misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Beautiful story.

Seaside Scandal

This book is super sweet! Jonathan and Alice end up getting married because of a mess situation. I totally loved how Jonathan looks out for his sister, and how Alice accepts her and quickly grows fond of her new sister-in-law.

Solid 4 stars

This book was doing so well and I was looking forward to how it would end until I realized I was at 80% and if the resolve I wanted came, it would come too quickly - and it did. It would have been a really really good book if we would have gotten more time with the characters and watched them progress in their personal relationships more. It just ended so quickly with a nice little bow that it has left me wishing for a real resolve with more of the messy emotions and depth that I seem to have gotten used to in other books.

A Seaside Scandal by Ashtyn Newbold was such an enjoyable read despite the frustrations of the circumstances surrounding the ‘scandalous swim’ which leads to the forced marriage between Alice and Jonathan. I knew it was coming (the title kind of gives that away!) but still found myself cringing as the story crashed towards the inevitable - and in the context of regency scandals (found together alone in a library- *gasp*) this one was worthy of the title! I just felt sad for them both being forced into the situation however, their initial attraction gave me so much hope for a happy ending despite the unfortunate incidents and misunderstandings that led to their somewhat frosty start to married life. The character of Margaret was such a sweet addition to the story and her presence was integral to the fixing of the cracks between Alice and Jonathan. It was eye opening and sad to understand how people with what we now know as autism, were treated in Regency times even by their families. Both main characters were such kind individuals, evident in their treatment of Margaret, but i did find myself wanting to shake them both at times for continuing with their misunderstandings over a few select moments. Talk to each other people and listen to your hearts!
Overall this was a thoroughly engaging and well written story with wonderful characters that you can’t help but root for and experience the journey with them. I am really interested to read the next instalment in the series and seeing the character development of a certain ‘best’ friend…

Prior to reading Ashtyn Newbold's "A Seaside Scandal", I was initially confused as this novel is book-ended by the initially unrelated "Mischief and Manors" and "Lies and Letters". Both are Newbold's earliest works, published in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Another favorite author of mine, Mimi Matthews, has employed this stratagem in linking two unconnected books with great success. This method works for Newbold, as well; however, she has revised these earlier releases.

I personally dislike the term "meet cute", yet it is appropriate here. Heroine Alice Kellaway (sister of Owen from "Mischief and Manors") first encounters hero Jonathan Croft in one of the funniest "introductions" I've ever read. What follows is an entertaining and heartwarming tale replete with engaging characters and amusing situations.

However, there are serious issues to tackle. Alice and Jonathan interact with each other under mutual misconceptions. Charlotte Lyons (with friends like that, who needs enemies?) is thoroughly unlikable and her supposed epiphany did not convince me. Although I am tempted to revisit my copy of the original "Lies and Letters", I'm curious how the author will develop Charlotte's character in the new version. Jonathan's sister Margaret is an unexpected delight.

Ashtyn Newbold's prose is lovely, and she crafts her scenes with skill. Well-edited and devoid of explicit intimate or violent scenes, "A Seaside Scandal" is an enjoyable read. I look forward to Charlotte's story. 4.5 stars

3.5 ⭐️

There was a lot of set up in the beginning of this one that was necessary for some heartfelt moments later in the story, but the execution was a bit clunky. I felt like the story didn’t flow until the second half, but once it did it was lovely. The addition of a sibling with autism really added heart and it made me emotional reading the author’s note at the end about Newbold’s brother. Overall, a satisfying read!

And now a note for future me for when the next book comes out!:

This book is about Alice, one of the Kellaway Siblings. Her bff Charlotte will be the main character in the next book. In the beginning of this story, Alice and Charlotte are visiting the sea where they meet Jonathan. Alice has a connection with him, but Charlotte tries to compete for him because of his fortune. Alice and Charlotte have a falling out and then Alice is forced into marrying Jonathan because they are seen accidentally swimming together. Alice realizes that Charlotte is jealous of her because she has a close family and is loved and that she needs her because she is her only friend. Charlotte doesn't know how to love because of the way that she was raised and we see that she acted out of the pressure her mother has put on her to marry into wealth. By the end of the story Alice and Charlotte begin to mend their relationship and Charlotte plays a role in getting Jonathan to finally confess his feelings for Alice.

I'm sorry, Ashtyn, but I just didn't like this book as much as the others.

The romance really didn't work for me. There was an initial spark of attraction, and then that was all they had to sustain things through all the doubts and difficulties.

The MMC really didn't trust the FMC and thought the worst of her up until the very end - well, flip-flopping a bit through the course of the story. And the HEA comes when he flips to the positive (for good, we think), but there is no building of trust, no building of the relationship outside of noticing that the other person is attractive.

I feel like I should give the book props for writing an Autistic character into it, but that part didn't really jell for me, either.

I could not put the story down. Delightfully charming, lots of witty banter, and woeful miscommunication. From flying crabs to spiteful back biting to scandalous dips in the ocean. This story has many entertaining episodes but then you turn the page and it is sweet and loving. Alice and Jonathan were perfect for each other. They just had a hard time figuring it out. One of the most touching parts of the story was Margaret. She is Jonathan’s little sister and is misunderstood by many. I just loved everything about this story. It is a clean and uplifting historical romance.

Very sweet and clean

Good clean romance with some angst of a forced marriage. I loved Alice, Johnathan was very likable but one wants to shake some sense into him. Perhaps I just didn't understand his continuing mistrust. Is it because of his own family or a woman? I think that I needed more information in that regard. Still a great book, I skimmed through some of it to avoid unnecessary angst from the mistrust. I adored Margaret and. the ending. A lot of depth really especially regarding seeing her selfish friend differently.

I love marriage of convenience/ arranged marriage, marriage forced by circumstance. Whatever you want to call it, I'll read it. And, this is a good one.
Alice and Jonathan have their struggles, but they are, at their cores, decent people. It takes them time to work things out and learn to trust each other, but they're not hare to root for.
This is a clean read and the editing is good. I received an ARC from the author. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so and the opinions stated are my own.

clean and wholesome romance

I enjoyed this second book in the series “A Change of heart”.
The author has created wonderful characters within a world that shows the challenges faced when life goes unexpectedly.
Both the hero and heroine are drawn to each other but circumstances as well as self doubts cloud their relationship.
The author does a good job of describing someone with limitations in a beautiful way.
I enjoyed the goodness of the hero and heroine and look forward to more from the author and the series!

4.5* This sweet story has many themes and perspectives in it - that would lend itself to being a great book club selection. The characters are unique and fresh, multifaceted and consistent through the story. I appreciated that there was a basis for a relationship even though the marriage of convenience brought Jonathan and Alice together.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

I absolutely loved this story. I had a hard time sleeping until it was done. Alice was so beautiful written. She is one my favorite of Ashtyn Newbold's characters. I look forward to reading this book again soon. One visit to this delightful world was not enough. I am looking forward to the updated version of Lies and Letters and I am keeping my fingers crossed for at least one more book in the series.

5/5 ⭐️ 0/5 🌶️ Wait! This was sooo good! This was exactly my type of book. The whole story was great. The banter, scandal, tension, forced proximity and marriage was just fantastic! I couldn’t put this one down! A favorite for sure! This is a second book too which I never expect to be better than the first. It can be read as a standalone if you don’t read the first.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! ❤️
Just kisses in this book.

I love genuine main characters and Alice was genuinely kind, curious and sweet! There was enough back story to help us understand choices, decisions and actions. The scandal was predictable but effective. I really enjoyed how well the sister Margaret was written and taken care of. This love story is worth the read!

I’m always happy with Ms. Newbold’s work! This one lulled quite a bit in the middle and I felt the description told too much of the story with how far into it that occurred. I did feel it was well done otherwise and the swoony moments were great, other than that Newbold is usually pretty good about putting more of them in and I feel this one had less, especially during that lull.

beautiful

I adore Alice’s personality and her and Jonathan’s relationship with Margaret. The mistrust and miscommunication in the plot between them was frustrating at times, but I enjoyed the character development and romantic tension.

Had some really entertaining parts!
The one thing I struggled with was the “best friend”.
I had a hard time believing their friendship was genuine when she seemed rude and not even apologetic for what she did. Overall it was a good book if you’re looking for a quick read.
