About the author

Prof. Ir. Eko Budihardjo, MSc was born in Purbalingga and obtained his undergraduate degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Engineering, Gajah Mada University, Jogjakarta (1969). His Master of Science in Town Planning was obtained from the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, UK, in 1978. He has held various positions, namely as the Rector of Diponegoro University (1998-2006); Head of Research Bureau Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University (1978-1989); Head of Architecture Department Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University (1987-1989); Vice Dean I Faculty of Engineering Diponegoro University (1989-1992); and Dean of Faculty of Engineering Diponegoro University (1992-1998).

In the professional organizations he held positions as the President of Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) Central Java branch (1987-1992) and Head of Planning Expert Association (IAP) Central Java branch (1992 - present). He is also the member of Habitat International Council (HIC) Mexico; Eastern Regional Organization on Planning and Housing (EAROPH) Malaysia and the International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP) the Netherlands. He often presents his papers in various scientific meetings abroad. In 1993 he travelled to the United States to study about the Conservation of Old Buildings and Cultural Heritage and in 1994 he went to Australia to conduct comparative studies in urban management.

During his spare time, he is often active as Director of Regional Development Studies Foundation, Advisor of Bakti Karya Foundation, Member of Expert at the Indonesian Moslem Scientist Association (ICMI) Central Java, Member of Council of the Indonesian Engineer Association (PII) Central Java, President of Rotary Club Semarang, and Chairman of Art Council Central Java. He received numerous awards, such as the prestigious 'Bhakti Upapradana'from the Governor of Central Java, Lecturer with Achievements from the Rector of Diponegoro University, CUltural Gold Star from the Centre of Javanese Culture Foundation, and Honorable Award from the Indonesian Architect Association (IAI).

Terutama mahasiswa yang mendalami ilmu arsitektur dan kota, buku ini sangat baik untuk dijadikan bacaan. Pemahaman dan pemikiran yang diulas oleh Pak Eko Budihardjo memberikan kesadaran terhadap berbagai masalah yang seharusnya masyarakat kota sadar dan berani untuk memberikan perubahan.

Buku ini terasa ringan dan mampu menyampaikan maksud-maksudnya dengan baik. Di beberapa bagian memang ada pengulangan-pengulangan yang menjemukan, tapi, secara keseluruhan, ia layak dibaca dan disimpan di rak. Saya senang membacanya.
