Amazing book, if you like historical intrigue. I adore the illustrations although I understand C. Hampton Jones had to purify them for the sticklers who hated to see "cracks and nipples" (a quote, not my words.) Hengist is all overpowering, exactly as we all want a man to be... (heh-heh, girls.) Great twists and turns to some sort of a happy end. Just read it and look at the you tube video C. made all by herself.
It is a mad world in which Hengist Agnew is moving in this novel. His brother is married to his sweetheart, but refuses to bed her as he is only interested in men, his father is suffering from dementia, leaving the earldom of Loghaire to crumble. Death threatens from all sides, the capital punishment- that is the punishment for sodomy, and Marguerite’s flirtatious mother who gets her come-uppance in a cruel way… Great twists and turns, romance and sex to boot!
