Here is the absolute best of Dave Barry; selections from four of his most popular books, including the hilarious Guide to Guys. Dave Barry is on the loose and no one is safe....
Dave Barry is a humor writer. For 25 years he was a syndicated columnist whose work appeared in more than 500 newspapers in the United States and abroad. In 1988 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary. Many people are still trying to figure out how this happened. Dave has also written many books, virtually none of which contain useful information. Two of his books were used as the basis for the CBS TV sitcom "Dave's World," in which Harry Anderson played a much taller version of Dave. Dave plays lead guitar in a literary rock band called the Rock Bottom Remainders, whose other members include Stephen King, Amy Tan, Ridley Pearson and Mitch Albom. They are not musically skilled, but they are extremely loud. Dave has also made many TV appearances, including one on the David Letterman show where he proved that it is possible to set fire to a pair of men's underpants with a Barbie doll. In his spare time, Dave is a candidate for president of the United States. If elected, his highest priority will be to seek the death penalty for whoever is responsible for making Americans install low-flow toilets. Dave lives in Miami, Florida, with his wife, Michelle, a sportswriter. He has a son, Rob, and a daughter, Sophie, neither of whom thinks he's funny.
4.5 stars I listened to this audiobook directly after listening to Dave Barry in Cyberspace only to find that the first 20% was the exact same. If you are planning to listen to some Dave Barry, you can skip Cyberspace and just listen to this one. Overall, it was quite funny and enjoyable. I just felt a little disappointed to listen to the entire same book at the beginning. It is a very funny segment, but if it is its own book, then maybe it doesn't need to be repackaged in its entirety in a "funniest stuff" collection. I'm now wondering what is in store for me when I listen to Dave Barry's Greatest Hits
Edited to add: So, I listened to Dave Barry's Greatest Hits and More of Dave Barry's Greatest Hits only to find that they are also in this book. This book is essentially a repackaging of three others. It would have been nice to know that before spending the time listening to everything twice!
2/5 Not remotely his funniest stuff! The cyber/internet/social section is completely out of date. He left out his bit about preparing for a colonoscopy which I feel is his funniest story, he mentioned his mother-in-law who is usually good for a laugh or two but not this time and though I miss John Ritter and it was nice to hear his voice, nothing even remotely made me laugh out loud. Very disappointing.
