4.5 I am on a roll ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I could not put this down!
This was fantastic. Genuinely romantic, with the hero doing almost all the chasing, which is exactly my catnip. He does mess up… quite spectacularly 😬, but at least he earns the right to grovel.
The blurb is slightly misleading. It sells this as more of a rom-com than it actually is. I found it far more romance than comedy, which, for me, was good news I guess.
Sloane, 26, writes for Bride Magazine and meets Wilder, a world famous rugby player, while covering a socialite wedding.
She’s carrying some serious emotional baggage after being jilted at the altar and has sworn off men, especially charming serial flirts with a trail of broken hearts behind them.
Unfortunately for her, Wilder is completely captivated.
The moment he discovers she works for his father, he shamelessly engineers ways to keep crossing her path. 🙌
Sloane comes from a loud, blue-collar family of police officers, firefighters and pub owners, where everyone knows everyone else’s business.
Wilder comes from a far more polished, sophisticated world, and that difference makes Sloane hesitate.
She refuses every date he asks for and Wilder, to his own bewilderment, proclaims he will waits until she is ready.
And then proceeds to pursue her relentlessly anyway.
As their relationship deepens, life throws them a series of increasingly difficult challenges, and the emotional stakes keep climbing.
The romance felt believable throughout, and every conflict made the relationship more compelling rather than artificially dramatic.
Spoilers
Wilder lost a lot of points with me when Sloane became pregnant.
I completely understood why he reacted the way he did, his past made it believable, but disappearing for two weeks while your pregnant girlfriend faces it alone? Ouch!
They’d only been together a few months, but they were deeply in love and fully committed. Shock is one thing. Abandonment is another.
I became pregnant very soon after meeting my husband, so I related to Sloane’s situation immediately. If he’d vanished for two weeks to “process,” he wouldn’t have become my husband.
Ironically, that’s also why this worked. I disliked Wilder’s choice, but I believed it. That’s good character writing.
Should you read it?
Absolutely. It was a strong romance and a thoroughly enjoyable read. ❤️
Chance of divorce: 30%.
I can forgive mistakes but I don’t trust weakness.
