You know that moment when you're excited to read a book because the premise sounds SO GOOD, but then reality hits like a badly timed plot twist? Yeah… that was me with The Plot Twist.

Okay, so we’ve got Allie—bestselling romance author with a case of writer’s block ✍️ (relatable). She teams up with grumpy crime novelist Martin, and along the way, she meets Will, a swoon-worthy caterer. Sounds like a fun bookish rom-com, right? Well, the execution left me scratching my head more than swooning. 🤨

📖 The good:
✨ The friendship between Allie and Martin was sweet! 🫶 Their banter had potential, and honestly, I was more invested in their dynamic than the romance.
✨ Fast-paced and easy to read. It didn’t drag, so I’ll give it that. ⏳

📖 The not-so-good:
❌ The romance was barely there. Like, Will who?? 🤷‍♀️ I swear we got more half-baked interactions than actual chemistry. The relationship felt rushed, shallow, and lowkey transactional. 🥴
❌ Allie… girl. She’s in her 30s but makes decisions like a teen in a Wattpad fic. 🤦‍♀️ I wanted to root for her, but she kept sabotaging herself in ways that made zero sense.
❌ The book juggles too many themes but doesn’t fully commit to any. There’s feminism, publishing drama, romance, found family—but all of it felt surface-level and underdeveloped.
❌ The pacing was weird. ⏭️ Scenes would cut off abruptly, and we’d jump to the next day with no real buildup. Emotional connection? Nonexistent. 🚫💖

Honestly, this had all the makings of a great book, but the execution fell flat. 📉 If it had been longer, with more depth to the romance and characters, it could've worked! As it stands, I just felt underwhelmed. 😕

Final verdict? ⭐⭐ for potential and a few enjoyable moments, but this plot twist did NOT have me gasping in delight.

It kept my interest for the first 25-30% but then slowly lost me. I liked the relationship between allie and Martin they’re so cute.

I was more interested in Martin and Angie more than allie and will lmao. They had no substantial chemistry or connection. The romance wasn’t compelling or interesting.

There was more tell than show and the writing was too simple for my taste.

I thought this was a fun, uplifting book that was enjoyable and easy to read. This one was a bit predictable but the story was lovely. I really enjoyed the relationship between Martin and Allie and felt it added some additional character to the story. I really like how she wrote and eventually was able to share the story with Martin and his wife. Will was adorably cute and I see a long future between him and Allie.

I've been reading so many romance books where the main character is an author and I AM ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT. I've never considered myself a talented writer, honestly not even a good one. But, I love being able to get inside an author's head during books like these. I loved the platonic and unique relationship we got between Allie and Martin, usually the other writing mentor/partner is the other love interest but it was fun to see a platonic friendship between two writers who just shared a love for a common craft.

Hearing about Martin's family struggles as well as his love for his wife and their own love story was so cute and heartwarming (I think Martin may be my favorite character 🥺)

The romance was fun as well! But it didn't take over the over arching plot line of her writing her comeback novel and her struggles with the publishing industry. I recommend this if you want a love letter to writing that explores things deeper than just the romance!

2.5⭐️ Romance writer Allie Edwards and crime novelist Martin Clark are both struggling with looming deadlines and intense writer’s block. Soon they develop a plan to switch plot lines and stories in order to shake up their writing and careers.

For Allie, this new partnership offers a father figure and new relationships, including one with caterer Will. For Martin, Allie offers something he has never had— a confidant. But things take a turn when Allie discovers there is much more to the story than Martin is letting on.

This had all of the elements to make a wonderfully heartfelt rom-com, but I found the execution of it to be quite different than I had imagined. I do often appreciate a slow-burn romance; however, this was so slow I forgot it was a romance at all. I think Plot Twist is a case of a book trying to do way too much, and in doing so, it makes it hard for the reader to connect to any of it at all. While I would suggest this may be an outlier opinion, I fear, based on the ratings, I am not alone in my critique.

This was a cute rom-com!

The premise is so fun. Two authors facing immense writers block decide to “switch” plot ideas for their next books.

The star of the book was the two authors, Allie and Martin, and their writing relationship and friendship. I love that an old male crime author can become friends with a young female romance author. They don’t have much in common besides being writers, so it was interesting to see them develop a friendship. I also liked Martin’s wife and how he was trying so hard to rekindle his marriage with her.

The book is a little light on the actual romance between Allie and Will. Allie and Will’s romantic relationship took a backseat to Allie and Martin’s writing relationship. While I would have liked to have seen more of Will, the core of the story is centered on Allie writing a book, so I didn’t mind the heavy emphasis on writing.

As for the rest of the supporting characters, I loved Jess, Allie’s best friend, and Verity, Allie’s editor.

The story also provided an inside look into the publishing industry and gave a glimpse into how books are published. I really enjoyed that aspect.

Overall, if you’re looking for a sweet romance that also features an unconventional friendship, check this one out!

It's a heartwarming, predictable, but sweet story. I liked the friendship between Martin and Allie and their banters, too, but with Will? The relationship between him and Allie was underwhelming. I wanted more, but it wasn't there.
The Found Family trope is cute; it's one of my favs, so I had to read this book. The pacing of the story was fine.. somethings felt rushed, but I managed them.

I hope we get to see Will and Allie's relationship going further in the next part.

I liked the concept of this story, but the introduction felt very lengthy. The romance itself doesn’t really take off until close to the halfway point.

Despite having seven successful romances to her name, Allie finds herself in a major writing slump with a looming deadline. She teams up with Martin Clark, a renowned crime writer from the '90s who is battling his own writer’s block. Together, they form an unexpected partnership to break through their creative blocks!

While Martin’s fatherly bond with Allie was incredibly sweet, it often felt more central to the story than the romance with Will, a caterer she meets at an event. I liked how everything tied together, but the interactions with Will were just too limited, and Allie’s self-sabotage made it difficult to fully connect with their relationship.

I think there were just too many subplots—writer’s block, Allie and Will’s romance, Martin’s marriage, and an editor takedown. With so much happening, some storylines didn't get the spotlight I hoped for.

I was expecting and hoping to love this book but it wasn’t for me. The book was pretty predictable.

The fmc wasn’t my favorite character. For being an older character, her decisions were very child like. I found myself yelling at the book, telling her to get it together !

Although it wasn't my favorite book, there were still so many parts I loved. I really appreciated how it explored writer's block and how relationships can influence a writer's work. And Angie and Martin’s love story? Beautiful!!

Just because this book wasn’t for me, doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy it! Fast pace, easy read! 🤗

For a book called The Plot Twist, you’d think the plot twist would be… well, twisty. Instead, it’s as obvious as spotting a cat eyeing an open tuna can. But you know what? That’s okay, because sometimes the best stories are the ones where you know what’s coming and still enjoy the ride.

Allie Edwards is a romcom writer you can’t help but root for—likable, messy, and so relatable you’ll probably cringe a little remembering your own questionable decisions. Her unlikely friendship with Martin, the grumpy dinosaur of the publishing world, is the true heart of the book. It’s like watching a sitcom duo that shouldn’t work but absolutely does.

Then there’s Will, the dreamy caterer who shows up just in time to fill Allie’s romantic void and add some much-needed heat to her manuscript. Sure, he’s predictable, but he’s also so charming you won’t mind. It’s like being handed a warm slice of cake—familiar, sweet, and you’re definitely not complaining.

I especially loved how the book dives into the chaos of writing: the looming deadlines, the blank pages, and the desperate search for inspiration.

All in all, The Plot Twist is a quick, cute read perfect for when you need a break from the heavy stuff. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s like a good romcom movie—you’ll laugh, you’ll swoon, and you might roll your eyes a little, but you’ll be glad you picked it up.

I felt for the longest time to DNF this book. It was boring since 20% in, and I DNFed it at 65%.

The protagonist makes pretty childish decisions as well as has adolescent thoughts on what love should be when she is 1) a romance author, and 2) well into her thirties.

50% into the book and there was no romance between Allie and Will. There were only butterflies, and it wasn’t an “active slow-burn” romance, it was a “there is absolutely no chemistry or emotional buildup in between characters” romance. In fact, I wouldn’t even call it a romance; it was a mere crush. This read more like a women’s fiction trying to be a romance than an actual romance novel.

This book felt like a cheap version of Beach Read. It almost had the same premise. Two writers have writer’s block and decide to switch their genres of books in an attempt to remove said writer’s block. The plot in itself was pretty predictable, and I’m pretty slow when it comes to any type of “plot twist” or shift in the story. Like I guessed the major plot point within 40% of the book (when it was first mentioned…)

One main thing that I noticed a lot was that Goymer tried to include a lot of social topics without actually going in depth in any of them. It felt quite strange reading about certain (very important) issues that were only mentioned and not really discussed.

However, the one thing I really enjoyed was the friendship/mentorship that Allie and Martin had. It was the one thing I looked forward to.

All in all, this wasn’t really my cup of tea, but I think that there are some people that would like it.

First I’d like to thank the author and Netgalley for the arc of this book, I’m very thankful for the chance to read this story! Now for the review. I liked the prose of the book, which is what made me want to apply for the arc of the book in the first place, and although the prologue and first few chapters of the book were a bit slow, the story definitely picks up. The story contains a handful of likable characters and a teaspoon full of unlikeable ones, all making the story what it is. I do have a few critics though. While the author does a good job of building up the plot and the friendship with Allie and Martin, I do feel as if the story is lacking more sweet moments and the build up to the relationship of Allie and Will and I found myself wishing for more of those as i read the story. Secondly, the main character, Allie, got on my nerves at various moments in the story. While I know making mistakes is part of being human, I feel as if Allie looks the wrong choice in the face and decides to make it anyway, resulting in her regretting her choices even though they were something that could have been prevented and pitying herself. Despite all of this, this book still provides an interesting story to get lost in.

The Plot Twist is such a delightful read featuring two authors, Allie and Martin, who are struggling with a writer’s block, teaming up unexpectedly just to help each other find the much-needed inspiration again.

What I like most about this book is definitely its bookish setting. Aside from the publishing events and book launches, the book also shows how an aspiring writer’s mind works. As Allie and Martin try to navigate this new bottleneck, they’re inadvertently solving the mystery about what is REAL among the fictional characters they create and people around them in life.

Even though there’s just a teeny tiny touch of romance (a meet cute at a book event) in this book, I still find the couple—Allie and Will—endearing. All I hope is to see a little more of them here so I can 100% turn into a fangirl.

Anyways, please go pick this one up! It’s a cute read that will keep you entertained and maybe inspire you somehow! As for me, this is my first book written by Eleanor and it surely won't be the last; I can't wait to read more of her work in the near future.

It was cute, by 25% I knew exactly what was going to happen in pretty much the entire entirety of the book.
It’s well written and the characters were fine, but I also feel like this could’ve been a lot shorter
The FMC definitely makes her life a lot harder than it needs to be by not communicating with people like an adult….
It’s closed door, not sure if spice would have helped or not but I will say it was also kind of wishy-washy as to whether or not the characters were even having a sexual relationship or if it was flirty like high school and that was it. It wasn’t romantic at all to me.
The MMC was closed off for no good reason and just kinda seemed to be going along with things. The romance had little chemistry

Okay, where do I even start? I honestly don’t think I have enough words to describe how much I disliked this book. It’s the first one that threw me into such a massive reading slump that I could barely make myself read anything afterward. But, as usual, I pushed through the pain and FINISHED IT.

And let me tell you—it wasn’t worth it. Not at all.
The plot? It's got a bit of everything—way too much, actually—and none of it connects or makes any real sense.
The characters? I found myself disliking Allie (the main character) more and more with each chapter. I actually liked the side characters more than her.
The blurb? Sounds appealing. You think it'll be interesting to see two writers help each other finish their books after getting stuck… Well, that idea shows up in maybe a few chapters. The rest? Just Allie rambling about who knows what.
The romance? Basically non-existent. You have no idea if Allie actually cares about Will until the very end—when everything’s already gone downhill and fallen apart.

It was just too much all at once, the characters weren’t likable, and I couldn’t connect with them at all. The story became hard to follow after a while, and even though it’s told from Allie’s perspective, in third person POV, it still wasn’t an easy or enjoyable read.
Do yourself a favor—don’t even start this book. High expectations, zero payoff.

Sadly, I wasn’t too fond of this book. It all started with me strongly disliking the main character, which had an effect on the story as a whole for me. I thought the main character was naïve, selfish, and the decisions she made did not resemble her age. So many of the main character’s problems could’ve been solved by communicating like an adult, which sadly she didn’t most of the time.
I did really like the storyline of Angie and Martin, even though I also disliked Martin at times.
I liked Will, but at times I felt like his love for Allie made him rather blind.
I’m sure this book will be perfect for others, but personally it wasn’t my cup of tea!

The plot of this book sounded really cute, but was poorly executed. I would’ve had an easier time believing they were teens rather than in their 30s. Angie is the best character in the entire story. I barely feel like I know MMC, and Martin doesn’t know how to romance his own wife??? please. I would’ve DNFed if this wasn’t an arc, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt.

The Plot Twist follows Allie - a best selling romance author who we meet in the midst of a writing slump. The novel follows her as she finds her passion again - in more ways than one, through friendship, love and her writing.

The premise of this one was really promising, but the execution fell shy of my expectations.

The first issue that I had was that i felt that this book was almost doing too much - the amount of different storylines that are explored in such a short amount of pages results in a weak narrative and elements that feel performative. At the end of the novel -which is primarily a romance novel - I remained with little to know knowledge about the male romantic lead, he still felt like a shell and lacked any real depth. I think this issue continues throughout the book as a lot of the characters feel underdeveloped and lack any real depth. Allie (our FMC) is very short-sighted and feels immature with repeated dialogue about how her belief in true love died a long time ago yet this is never relfected within her inner monologue clearly in a way that is shown to the reader, Martin is reflective of a teenage boy with no emotional self-reflection.

Another issue i had was the pacing of the book, much of it felt like snippets, and half scenes, before jumping to the following day- making it difficult to emotionally connect to the characters or the plot - and ultimately i wasn't rooting for anybody or anything in this book - apart from myself getting to the end of it.

This book ultimately felt like it was lecturing to me a lot, telling me key things rather than showing me and leading me as a reader to form a conclusion or to make my own discovery. There was a lot of messaging and commentary on sexism and the patriarchy spread throughout - which I would find no issue with - and honestly the comments I agree with, but they felt almost forced upon me as a reader as they cropped up in times where it didn't sit naturally within the text, or wasn't even fully a product of the story. The core example of this that stands out is when our FMC asks one of her friends if she is pregnant - in which the response is for the friend to enter into a rant about the patriarchy and how men are never asked this question - the rant here felt unnecessary and inauthentic to what was happening. Ultimately a lot of this felt as though it was there just to drive home a message - that would have been more effectively shown through character action and plot rather than dialogue.

Well, I am glad to have finished this! It took me so long to get into it, and get used to the writing, because there are long paragraphs upon paragraphs, without any dialogue at the beginning. And I did not like that. I understand needing to be introduced to the story and the world, but when it’s not set in a fictional fantasy world, it does not need to be this in detail! Especially since it’s just set in modern day earth.

I was bored from the very beginning, and unfortunately, even after we met the characters, I was still bored. It was only after the halfway mark that I was actually excited to keep reading. Which should not be the case.

I don’t know what it is, apart from the writing style. It is way too much explaining of meaningless things happening or its information about every little detail the main character is doing. I do not need to know! Show, not tell!

The romance didn’t seem to have much chemistry. It felt like they transitioned to a couple, but still only felt like friends to me. Don’t get me wrong, the characters, Allie and Will, are still cute! I just didn’t get the feeling of romance between them.

After the first 25% of the book, it was a bit predictable, but it did get easier to read, personally. So it got better. But it shouldn’t take almost over a quarter of the book to get me interested.

Overall, it was a quick read, and it was a cute romance.

Unfortunately, The Plot Twist wasn't what I was expecting. Out of 280 pages, I read 64 and felt stuck. Over the course of four chapters, I couldn't find anything to keep me reading, because I felt that the main female character, Allie, was just repeating the same thing over and over again.

We meet Allie, an author who is due to publish her eighth book soon, but who is suffering from a creative/writing block and can't find the inspiration to write her manuscript. In the midst of this challenge, Allie can't find the right moment to share with those she works with that she's not in the right state of mind to write another novel and drags this information over months.

Sounds interesting, doesn't it? Yes, I thought the same thing, but as I continued reading, throughout the 64 pages, I noticed that I was only reading how she didn't feel motivated to write, how she sat down but couldn't write a word, or how she thought she felt unmotivated and couldn't think of anything to write. See what I did? I repeated myself.

Being 22% through a book and not learning anything new about the story or, better still, not learning anything that wasn't expected, led me to put the book down and decide not to keep on reading it.

I don’t know how to rate this, the first 30-40 ish percentage did not even have romance in it, it was more like setting the plot and the story but to me the characters were not really a couple, it felt more like they are friends, and this feeling stayed with me until the end of the book

I thought this was a really sweet book! It was easy to see where it was going and at times I certainly wished we saw more of Will and had more time to read about him but overall, I had a great time and it was a nice, light read. I found it slightly hard to buy into the romance because I felt I didn’t know Will much as a person at all by the end of it!

I found Allie and Martin’s relationship to be my favourite part of the book! It was very well done and I haven’t read anything like it for a while. It was wholesome and heart warming.

I also often found Allie frustrating. It felt like she wasn’t facing any of her problems - but people were coming to her to fix them for her instead.

Overall, this was a fun book! Would recommend to anyone wanting an easy but fun read.

i really really wanted to like this one 🥲! the premise was different and it sounded so so good but I found the fmc to be so unlikeable, her decisions and immaturity was so jarring.
i also felt that the romance with will fell a bit flat (he was lovely) but we didn't seem them interact enough, which was largely due to the amount of plot points going on at any given time.

overall, not my favourite read but there were some parts of the book I loved - especially the banter and allie's relationship with martin .

I wanted to love The Plot Twist, but it felt like the book was juggling too many ideas without fully committing to any of them. The romance? Barely there. The characters? Flat. The pacing? All over the place.

If this hadn’t been an ARC, I probably would’ve DNF’d it at the 14% mark (which is the end of chapter one). I REALLY forced myself to finish this one

Still, there were glimmers of potential—especially in Allie and Martin’s friendship, which had some genuinely fun moments. With deeper character development and a more fleshed-out romantic arc, this could’ve been a winner. Unfortunately, it missed the mark for me.

Overall Thoughts: Don't market it as a romance/rom-com, it's honestly more of an adult coming-of-age.

Aaaaaaah! This was so cute and fun, I absolutely devoured it!

Super easy and quick to read, maybe a touch predictable, but that's what I wanted at this moment. So I have no issues with that. Especially because I had just read Not in My Book and was craving another book like that (and this fit the bill).

The writing flowed and was easy to follow and overall, I had a great time reading this.

I loved the opposites attract thing going on here and how both main characters are bookish (authors).

I really don't have anything else to say beyond "I recommend this, it was so fun and cute!" And I think that alone says a lot.

The Plot Twist by Eleanor Goymer offers a sweet, slow-building romance with a unique angle—an older side-character couple rekindling their love after 30+ years of marriage. While the story had endearing moments and a heartwarming wrap-up, its predictable plot and slower pacing left me wanting more time and tension between the main characters, Allie and Will.

I enjoyed the organic way the authors Martin and Allie supported each other, but by the halfway mark, the story became bogged down with too much focus on side plots. I would have loved more depth and presence for Allie and Will's relationship to pull me in.

⭐⭐⭐ 3 Stars – This book is a pleasant, relaxing read with unique inter-character connections and a soft finish, though it didn’t break new ground for me. Also note: no on-page steam, just a few sweet kisses, and no laugh-out-loud moments for me.

Honestly, I had high hopes for this one. The book cover is BEAUTIFUL and synopsis is very intriguing!! When I started it the book I had trouble really getting into it. I think it’s probably a case of right book, but wrong time.

The meet cute with Allie and Will was sooo RomCom esc and I loved that!!! Although, I did get put off by how it seemed more like lust at first sight than love at first sight. I just felt like if the pov had been Will’s and he had those thoughts about Allie right away it would’ve been icky…

Overall, I loved the premise and the friendship that Allie had with Martin!! It was really refreshing to see the dynamic in a romance novel.

Another thing that bothers me is the “plot twist” comes very early on and is pretty noticeable to everyone, BUT Allie 😅. This is the main reason I couldn’t finish the book, I just got a little irritated.

Overall, if you want a palate cleanser book that’s a quick read and has a few cute moments then this is for you.
