A Drop of Fortune is the first novel in a series of standalone cozy fantasy romances. Perfect for fans of Legends & Lattes, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, and The Spellshop.
Definitely on the cozy side. This was such a good easy read, no high stakes and extremely cute. Love the characters and that owl is way too sarcastic sometimes. It has family found. Found your place. And I loved all the characters, side ones and main . Would definitely recommend!!!
"A Drop of Fortune" by Danielle Garrett is a light, relaxing, cozy romantasy. It also has a mystery to be solved. I enjoyed this book, and it was an excellent balm following a highly stressful book.
Evelyn Rosewood is a sister witch in the Coven of Kael. She serves the King. When he commands that she brew a poison and she refuses, he threatens her life. Lady Kilgower, the King's Royal Advisor, sends her away to Shyglass, a far away port town, to save her life. Evelyn is given the mission to solve the blight on their crops, if possible.
Evelyn has a familiar, a small owl named Archie. He is the comic relief. They get to the city and start to meet the rest of the cast, some friend and some foe. Evelyn is a potions healer primarily, so she starts doing this for needy townspeople. Eventually, a romance starts.
Let me set the scene. It’s an October afternoon, cloudy skies, it just started to rain. You light a candle and grab a cup of hot chocolate. You curl up on the couch with a blanket and need a book to read. This is the book you would pick up. Cozy vibes and a cute story that you won’t regret reading. This book turned into my comfort book. If i’m ever unsure of what to read or in a slump, this is it.
"A Drop of Fortune" is a cosy fantasy book telling the story of Evelyn Rosewood - a young witch who's made to serve a corrupt king. She is sent on a mission through which she can finally earn her freedom after being in service for the last few years. She ends up in a small town where she needs to figure out how to get rid of the curse set on the town but to do that she needs to blend in. And so starts Evelyn's adventure that will eventually give or cost her the freedom she's been longing.
When I read the description for the book I was HOOKED. It sounded like it would be a perfect cosy autumnal book and although I liked it in general it did fall a bit flat for me. I did get through the book rather fast, but I found myself kind of bored at times since the stakes were a bit too low. "A Drop of Fortune" is advertised as an adult coy romantasy, but it's a bit too simple to be that and I think it would've worked better as a YA book.
However, I did enjoy the cosy small town vibes and it felt like I was walking through a video game land listening to this book. I liked Evelyn as the main character and her familiar Archie was a fun side character. It was a very easy read and helped me get more into the cosy autumnal mood. My final score is 3 stars and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys low-stakes cosy romantasy books.
What to expect? cosy fantasy with witches and other magical creatures, extremely low stakes, small-town vibes, no spice, found family.
I would also like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to listen to the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I almost think this book would have been better as a children’s chapter book or YA book. This book reminded me of Ella Enchanted. It had a great concept of a witch (Evelyn) being sent to a land that was cursed to see if she can save it, but I was really bored for majority of the book. It had some good characters – loved Archie the owl familiar and some of Evelyn’s neighbors. If you simply took out the love story with the herb merchant, it could have been a children’s chapter book.
The whole reason Evelyn went on this mission was so that she could be freed from her contract at the castle with a corrupt king. She is a royal witch representative of the one of the realm’s four covens. But I simply didn’t feel the urgency of wanting to be freed of this seven-year contract. She didn’t have that much time there left. She had other friend witches with the four covens. It may sound strange, but I wanted her life to be worse at the castle so I could feel her strong desire to be freed.
The mystery of the curse and town’s secrets just weren’t that exciting. Danielle Garrett tried to have twists and surprises, but they just fell flat for me. Maybe it was the narrator that made my mind wonder too much during the book? Maybe the cozy mystery vibe is not my cup of tea.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for providing me with the advanced readers copy of the audiobook.
A cute little cozy fantasy slice of life type story with a bit of a mystery element and a really cute romance. This book made me want to just crawl right into the book and never leave. I loved all our characters and the villagers where just *chefs kiss*, the cozy little town was just perfect vibes. Honestly I really loved this a lot!! I cannot wait to see who the next book will follow and where it will bring us!
the audiobook was great, easy to follow I loved the narrators voice, it was just perfect for a cozy book.
Thank you Netgalley, Publisher and author for the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!!
There are some books you only read because you must…unfortunately this is one of them. Seriously this book sucked. There were to many magical creatures thrown together. There was no depth at all in any of the characters. I never ONCE felt emotionally invested or, heck, even interested. I was bored the whole time, even when the king wanted to throw her off the tower. All the time, things would happen that were obviously supposed to be pulse pounding and it was like whatever. You could kill the main character and I’d shrug and move on. The side characters seemed to be leaning towards the idea of a “found family,” troupe but that fell flat too. The romance was obvious and again boring. Give me a little angst, give me a little longing. Ugh and I hated how she kept her little task quiet from everyone but it was also totally obvious that she was working on the soil and asking all sorts of questions. And Jarvis (the other healer) being slimy and disgusting just didn’t ring true. He should have been menacing. He should have had a better reason for hating her. It just didn’t seem true. And the familiars? Ummmmm. Normally I’m all for that. I love an animal that talks and interacts with you. Evelyn’s familiar seemed like a stuffy fussy crotchety old man that is constantly on her case and complaining. I hated him. He detracts from the story. Don’t even get me started about the world building…we have fairies and elves and goblins and witches and dragons and deer people?? We have a “blight,” that’s actually a curse?? We have an evil king that actually isn’t even supposed to be king? The king’s loyal advisor is actually his enemy? Also she had the cure the WHOLE TIME? What’s the actual point? But it was called something different? Stupid. It’s too much. She tried to do too much. If maybe…I don’t know she had focused on just several aspects it would have been better. I regret very much buying an ebook and an audiobook of this story and plan to try to remove all of them from my phone as quickly as possible.
The one positive thing was that although the writing was boring, it actually had great grammar, varied word choices and seemed to be throughly edited.

This book was my first in the cozy fantasy genre, and I found it to be an enjoyable and charming read. The story is light and heartwarming, perfect for when you're in the mood for something relaxing and comforting without high-stakes drama. The characters are endearing, and the found family dynamic adds a sense of connection and warmth to the narrative.
One of the highlights was the cozy, small-town atmosphere that the author vividly brought to life. I loved the detailed descriptions of the harbour town setting and day-to-day life.
However, the low stakes left me feeling disengaged in various sections of the book. While the characters were cute and the relationships sweet, I would have liked to have seen a bit more tension or mystery. The lack of any real conflict or plot twists made certain sections feel a little slow, and by the time I reached the end, I was left wanting more resolution or depth. The conclusion, while fitting for the tone of the book, didn’t leave me fully satisfied.
If you’re a fan of cozy fantasy and enjoy books centred around themes of friendship, found family, and everyday life with minimal conflict, I would recommend this book.
Stuck serving a the tyrannical ruler of a kingdom on the brink of war, Evelyn is sent away to try to figure out what's causing the blight that's ruining half the kingdom's source of fresh vegetables. Although she presents herself as a healer, Evelyn finds herself facing an unfortunately high level of mistrust and prejudice after the town has faced witch curses in the past. Undeterred, Evelyn sets up shop as a potion maker and starts to discover some friends, including one dashing young man who happens to sell a lot of the herbs Evelyn needs to make her spells. But despite the cozy atmosphere, it's clear that if Evelyn doesn't figure out something fast, the blight will destroy everyone's livelihood, and she'll have to return to the cruelties of the king's court as a failure.
This had a lot stronger of a found family element than I was expecting, which was sweet. There are also a lot of fun details regarding craftsmanship and gardening. The ending wasn't exactly satisfying, but the characters and romantic elements were cute. Overall, I'd say this book lives up to its cover art.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this audio ARC. All opinions are my own.
A Drop of Fortune is peek cozy fantasy in the best way. This is definitely a low stakes, easy read. However, don’t mistake that for being boring. There was plenty in the plot between an infuriating curse, healing, and prejudice against witches to keep you engaged. I’m a sucker for found family and the group Evelyn surrounds herself with hits just right. I also enjoyed the personal journey of Evelyn finding her place in the world and a place to belong. Her owl familiar, Archie, is such a ball of sass that will keep you laughing with his very particular views. I also enjoyed the relationship development between Evelyn and a certain herb merchant. You’ll be rooting for them from their first interaction. They’re not the only couple you’ll be rooting for either. I also loved the world building and setting for this story. Set in a harbor town and surrounding farmland, the location added to the overall cozy vibe of the story. I read this via audiobook and loved Amanda Ronconi’s narration. I can’t recommend the audiobook for this enough. ✨ ✨ ALC courtesy of Netgalley and Dreamscape Media
Just the cutest, coziest book ever! I absolutely loved the characters and setting. The writing has the perfect amount of cozy description, really making you feel at home in Evelyn's new city. I thought the romance was perfect for a cozy fantasy. Absolutely adored the love interest. The blight was also an interesting storyline. You really root for Evelyn to fix it and get her freedom! I can't wait for the next one.
I've been a fan of Danielle Garrett's cozy mystery books for awhile now, having read over 30 of them last year, and I was excited to check out something new from her. She nailed the cozy fantasy vibes. With good plotting, witches, talking familiars, a curse, town drama, and romance, this book had it all. Despite having the "cozy, low stakes" vibe, this book was very entertaining and I look forward to more from this series! Thank you for the ARC.
I am a huge fan of both this author so when I saw she had a new series, I couldn’t have been more excited to jump into it! I really enjoyed the set up of this new and magical world and I am very interested to see how the series progresses and what new characters we will follow along the way. And on a personal note, if I can’t have a feline familiar, then I would like an owl;)🦉
I have read many of Danielle Garret’s books so when she mentioned last year on her Facebook group that she was coming out with a cozy fantasy book I knew I had to read it. A Drop of Fortune was an excellent book and I enjoyed it very much.
If you liked Legends and Lattes then you will definitely enjoy this book. Evelyn is a witch who is tasked by the Royal Family to help remove a blight that has shrouded a once-thriving harborside town in despair. When she arrives at the town she meets a colorful cast of characters who may or may not be human who help her along her way. She finds a cozy cottage to live in and to run her potion shop. As she gets more familiar with the area she also finds love in a mysterious farmer who is holding on to a secret about his past.
This book had everything I enjoyed. A witchy tale, found family, cozy atmosphere, good pacing and a sweet romance. I highly recommend cozying up on the couch with a hot tea and reading this cozy fantasy this fall.
I would also recommend getting the audio. Amanda Ronconi is an excellent actress and she narrates all of Danielle Garrett’s books. I am a huge fan of Amanda as well, so check out the audio version!
Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Select for an advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I've tried a few books by this author and while I enjoyed them, none of them grabbed my attention enough to continue the series. However when I saw this book I was instantly curious as it was a cozy fantasy book and that's a genre I've grown quite fond of. So I decided to give it a try and grab the audio as I knew I liked the narrator's style. I am glad I did as I had a great time listening to this one.
A Drop of Fortune is a cozy fantasy book with a romantic side plot line. It follows Evelyn who is a witch in service of the throne, but when she declines to brew a poison for the king he threatens her life and the royal advisor sends her away with a task to resolve the blight in a seaside village. It is a gentle paced cozy read with a found family theme as Evelyn finds her place in this village. The blight is an important part of the story, but I feel the focus is even more on Evelyn and finding her way in this village.
I liked how how much Evelyn cared and wanted to help people by brewing potions. I also liked her banter with her owl familiar, although at times I thought they could be a bit nicer to each other, but it was clear they cared about the other. Then there is Evelyn's friendship with some of the other shop owners in the same street which was great to see. And her romance with a local herb merchant was very sweet and I liked how it build slowly for a bit and then when they grew closer their connection was obvious and I liked seeing how much they cared about the other. The whole book has this sweet cozy vibe and I liked it, there is almost no drama and even the danger and stakes don't feel super high, which I liked. It had that vibe where I knew everything would work out. The pacing could feel a bit slow at times, but overall I thought the gentle pace fit the story.
The narrator is pleasant to listen to and I liked the different voices she did. I especially liked how she voiced Evelyn's familiar Archie.
To summarize: I liked this gentle paced cozy fantasy book with a romantic sub plot line. I liked reading about Evelyn and how much she cares and tries to help others. I liked seeing her find her place and new friends. This book has a found family theme, which is a trope I like. And it also has a very sweet romance, it's a bit of a slow build with more focus on the romance in the second half. I really liked the two of them together and it was clear how much they cared about the other. Evelyn's banter with her owl familiar was great too. While there is some danger and tensions, it's low on the drama and it had that vibe that I knew everything would work out. The narrator was pleasant to listen to and did the various voices well with plenty of variety. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Emily and her familiar owl Archie escape the wrath of an angry king as they are sent on a journey far away to an important port. The farms are facing something that mysteriously is killing their crops. Reduced produce means harm for the citizens coiffures and the farmers pockets. Emily has many experiences that make this an exciting read. Each chapter brings Emily down many avenues in her search for a cure for the farms,, not to mention a disgruntled healer who seems to only be present for the wealthy. His threat does not dissuade Emily from her goal, to end the curse on the farms. The people she meets only make her journey that much more interesting. A gripping tale only Ms Garrett could create!
Thank you so much Dreamscape Select and Netgalley for the gifted audiobook.

Wow. This book was adorable. This is what I mean when I want a cozy fantasy. This was such a treat to read. Ordering my physical copy for my shelf. This is my first book by this author and will definitely be following for more!!!
This was a super fun and cosy read, a bit different from the authors usual style (I wouldnt really categorize this as a mystery like their other works) but it was almost better as that gave them a chance to explore this new magical world and their characters in a different way than in their other books. I loved the talking owl familar and the various non-human (human adjacent?) townfolk and how this was true quest style, setting off on her own to make a living, meet people and solve the issue.
In the midst of the trend to make magic real and gritty, the world that Garrett introduces in this book is refreshingly cute and cozy. The main character and her supporting cast are unique and likeable and the romance is warm and well done. I'll be waiting for more of this series and checking out more by this author in the meantime!
For sure a cute and cozy little read and exactly what I wanted, but I found that in some parts of the book it was almost too cozy? Maybe it was just drawn out too much but I could have used a teensy bit more drama or it to be a little shorter because I felt disengaged throughout different parts of the book.
"A Drop of Fortune (Four Corners Coven #1)" by Danielle Garrett is very much Cozy Fantasy with a hint of cozy mystery. The mystery part focuses on Royal Witch, Evelyn, trying to cure the blight on the land surrounding a port city. She's partly there so that she's out of sight out of mind, of sorts, from the king while a power struggle is going between him and his supposed half brother.
The fantasy part of this is a bit along the lines of your typical dungeons and dragons or fantasy renaissance/medieval fair. It all kept very cozy level. No swearing, romance is very mild and any violence is implied but not described.
The mystery part is more subtle. It really gets to be more just trying to figure out what is needed to reverse a curse. There isn't really any suspect hunting. Overall, a cute cozy fantasy with a hint of mystery.
Some parts were a bit boring, and there were... A lot of characters, some with names close enough that I had a hard time to follow in the beginning. Overal a very nice, cozy relaxing read.
