Rate this book
A group of siblings captured in an iconic beach nostalgia photo reunite on a sunny California island, where they're forced to face the fallout of their unconventional upbringing—and the golden secret that has been simmering ever since...

“A love story to an era of sun, salt air, and freedom. I promise, you will devour this novel.” —Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Flight

“Doan’s latest pulls you straight to the end like a powerful riptide. Unforgettable!” —Jessica Anya Blau, bestselling author of Mary Jane

It’s 1980s California, and everyone’s dreaming of the endless sun-drenched beaches, infinite waves, and most of all, beautiful, beautiful freedom. For the Merrick siblings, this idyllic vision is their reality, as they travel up and down the coast with their parents in a van year-round, surfing and swimming their days away. But when a photographer secretly snaps a stunning photo of the family with their boards in the sand, and the image ripples across the country, the only life they’ve ever known is put at risk.

Decades after, the now-distant siblings gather on a gorgeous, wild island to honor their late father. But their reunion is complicated when a journalist, eager for the truth behind the famous photo, discovers their identity and tracks them down. As the siblings reckon with the possibility that more of their lives could be shared, a revelation about their past forces them to confront long-held heartaches. Together, they’ll have to decide whether to let the same tensions rip them apart again—or if telling their story on their own terms might just be the way to recapture the family magic.

When I saw Amy Mason Doan’s announcement for her new novel, The California Dreamers, I immediately knew I had to read it. Having such an interest in surfing growing up, plus being a child of the 80’s, I knew this book was going to grab me and it certainly did just that.

The California Dreamers focuses on a family of 6 living a nonconformist, nomadic lifestyle on beaches along the west coast. Led by Cap, the patriarch of the family, the 4 children and Mama lead a life of leisure and lessons. The only girl, Ronan is the protagonist of the story. Cap’s regime seems to affect her the most, and she finds herself wondering if her “freedom” is really that, or just its own version of a prison.

Though my upbringing couldn’t be more opposite, I found myself relating to Ronan a lot. She’s around the same age as me, which made it easy for me to view the past POV’s through her eyes. I also really enjoyed Ronan’s complex relationship with each character in the book. Every single person is fleshed out so well and they were all pretty vivid in my mind.

Reading The California Dreamers was like being transported into a sunny/salty daydream that I didn’t want to end. I was truly fascinated by this family and their lifestyle. They truly showed how much beauty there is in a simple life. I highly recommend reading this, even if you aren’t a big fan of surfing. There’s just so much more to this book - complex family relationships, budding romance, and even a layer of mystery. But most of all, it’s Ronan’s love letter to her family; her Father most of all. To the positive and negative of both her relationship with him, as well as the dreamy but sometimes complicated life they lead.

I highly recommend this beautiful book. So many thanks to Amy Mason Doan, Graydon House and NetGalley for gifting me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am a sucker for an off grid family who is living their best life. Adding elements like a dual timeline and news and journal articles and I am hooked. The story follows Ro from her youth and in her adulthood. They share problems the family experienced including a close knit family bond and beautiful friendships. There ring of trust is small but the trust is high. Living the life style does leave parts of the family curious about what the other side has. We look back at choices Ro made and the strain she feels as they prepare to say goodbye to someone in the family. It was written so well and I could not put it down!

Thank you, NetGalley, for this ebook ARC of 'The California Dreamers' by Amy Mason Doan - expected release date of 04/08/2025

ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Such a beautifully written, engaging story of a free-spirited, holistic, nomadic family living off the grid, traveling across the west coast in an old food truck. Written from the lone daughter Ronan's (Ro) perspective, in both the past (her coming of age years) and the present (after her father's death). While this lifestyle would be more socially acceptable in today's society, the 80s was a much more regimented, structured time, which forced the family to keep their living situation a secret.

The kids were wildly street-smart and lived in fear of the outside world and what troubles they would bring their family if there was any interaction. They also internally questioned a lot of their parents choices, and wondered about social norms of that time, yet never confronted their parents. Instead, they bottled that all up.

The family was avid nature and surfing lovers. A captivating photo of them in their glory was secretly taken, submitted to a newspaper, and it went viral. This action blew up the family's privacy and caused Ro to run away at only 17 in an attempt to start living her own life.

Their secrets are revealed slowly through the book, and they sure are juicy. Charlie and Dyl's characters were so rich and captivating, I adored both of them and their close relationship to Ro.

I appreciated all the nods to 'Island of the Blue Dolphins' throughout. As an 80s baby myself, this was one of the first novels I remember reading in school and helped kickstart my insatiable need to read.

This book absolutely has my heart!! I have lived in California my entire life, and the backdrop of the west coast in the 80s was both familiar and comforting.

The California Dreamers by Amy Mason Doan is a beautiful story about a family of 6 who spend their lives off the grid, traveling the west coast in their van. It is told from the point of view of the only daughter, Ronan Merrick. The dual timeline alternates between Ronan’s childhood and present day, when she is reunited with her family fifteen years after running off and leaving that whole world behind.

Don’t we all fantasize about living off the grid at some point in our lives?! Mason Dean expertly captures the Merrick family’s unconventional, yet simple way off life, from their love of surfing and appreciation and care for nature, to the strong family bonds that develop as the siblings come of age, and later reunite.

I loved each and every member of the Merrick family, each unique and special in their own ways. By the end of the book I felt like I was part of the family and wasn’t quite ready to let them go. Of course the characters are not without their faults, but I love how the author slowly pulled back the layers of this story, as past secrets were slowly revealed. By the end, I came to appreciate each of them in a whole new way.

Thanks to Graydon House and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Nostalgic, captivating, and thought provoking. Not everyone grows up behind a white picket fence. Some grow up in very unconventional ways. The sea, the sand, the waves and the van, are what the Merrick family called home. I thought Amy Mason Doan did a tremendous job of capturing the beachy surfer vibe of California in the 1980's. The surf, the way sunlight glitters on the waves, the sand between your toes, the freedom of being in nature, and riding the waves is captured beautifully. I can almost smell the salt in the air!

The Merrick family was not your average family. They traveled the coast, surfing, living, and surviving. They became celebrities of sort when a photograph is published. Years later the siblings will gather to say goodbye to their recently deceased father, but they will not be alone. They will be joined by a journalist who wants to know about them and the famous photograph.

I enjoyed wondering what it would be like to live life as the Merrick family did. Traveling in a van, sleeping in the van and/or on the ground. What would it be like not to attend a traditional school? What would it be like to not put down roots but to travel here and there up and down the coast? What would it be like to be the only female sibling? What makes a home- is it where you sleep or who is in your life? Does how one is raised affect the rest of an individual's life? How do you ever go home if you never had one? The author tackles these questions sand then some.

This plot ebbs and flows like the waves of the ocean. We are shown glimpses in not only the past when the siblings are younger but also in the present day as the siblings come together for their father's final send off. This was a captivating and thought provoking coming of age story about Ronan who left her van living nomadic family at 17 and returns when one of her brothers informs her of their father's passing.

This is a book about family, secrets, identity, love of nature, choices, unconventional lifestyles, and relationships. I found this book to wonderfully written, well thought out, and thought provoking. Be sure to read the author's note at the end to learn what motivated the author to write this riveting book.

This was such a beautiful and touching novel. I loved learning about the Merrick’s way of life. The descriptions of the island were breathtaking. And the sibling bonds were so beautiful. There was just something special about this story.

The biggest complaint I have is that I wish it were longer and expanded on the family’s life after Ro left, and extended some after they left the island. I didn’t want the story to end.

Being from California and having been to the beaches all up and down our gorgeous coast this book took me right back there instantly. It was the 80’s and I was a kid obsessed with the surf scene and I was transported to that golden time in my life. Amy Mason Doan is excellent at character development and subtle plot twists and I was captivated by this evocative novel of hers the entire time. Loved it!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

4.5 stars.

When I first started this book, I thought it would be a solid four stars. I was enjoying it, but it took me a while to read it. But something as time went on got me so hooked on the story, I couldn’t help but give it five stars. I just loved the characters so much. It helps that I love a good sibling story, and so much of this revolved around the kids.

This reminded me of “Malibu Rising” with the surfing and the family drama. Though “Malibu Rising” was more fast paced.

I could picture the scenery very well. It would be an amazing movie in my opinion!

This is a very character driven novel.

The dynamic between these characters was just so interesting. Between Ronan and Dyl, the twin’s with each other, Ronan with Griff and with Mag. Cap most of all. I can’t help but dislike him for what he all did, but at the same time he was such a fascinating character. I didn’t hate him though, especially because the kids didn’t hate him.

Charlie fit into their lives so effortlessly, it was seamless and perfect. I wish we could have seen more of her, but I know the family was the main point.

It was a very, VERY, slow moving plot. So don’t expect a lot of action. You just have to go with the flow of the story. If you like the characters and are intrigued by their life, you’ll enjoy this book. If you don’t connect to any of the characters or don’t care to learn their story, you might as well put the book down.

It felt like I was reading 10 pages in 2 hours, that’s how slow it was. I don’t mean to deter people from this book, because I did really enjoy it, I just wish it had a faster pace. It was so nuanced, you really had to take your time with it.

I loved the Field Journal’s. They felt so poetic. I thought there was another person writing one than just Dyl, but I wouldn’t have expected who it was!

There are a couple things I would have changed. There could be some spoilers, so be cautious reading the next paragraph:

I personally think Ronan didn’t need to have a family, she could have just let the guilt keep her away from her mother and siblings. She could have had other lovers, but I’d rather she have been alone, or at least with no kids. Her separated husband and kids had no point to the story. Other than brief mentions of them here and there, it was just an extra part of the story that didn’t need to be in there. Despite how long it took me to finish this book, I wish we got a little more at the end, especially since Charlie seemed to disappear at the end. I wanted to see more of her and Ronan hopefully being together! I guess the point is they probably wouldn’t, especially because Ronan has another life with her kids, and they established it would be pretty hard to have both. That just proves that she shouldn’t have had a family and just lived on her own this whole time. Then she could have started a relationship with Charlie. Maybe Charlie was too wound up in the past that Ronan was trying to escape from that it never would have worked, but I wanted it to so badly. I loved them together.

It was interesting to know this was based off a real family! I had no idea.

If you love books about families and an ocean setting, this would be for you!

Set in California in the 1980’s, this is a story of a family, with a somewhat unconventional life, a family who become famous, despite not wanting to carry that fame. In fact, they avoid it as much as they possibly can, living in an RV.

A story shared slowly over time, sometimes a little too slowly, but overall a story of living a life outside of the average life, and avoiding, or trying to avoid, the people who see them as ‘famous’ while they wish to be left alone.

While at times this was somewhat atmospheric and thought-provoking, to me, and I enjoyed it, the ending seemed to not have any connection to the beginning.

4.25 stars. I just adored all the 80’s nostalgia (from back in my teen years), the California vibes, wholesome family dynamics and learning about the interesting culture around surfing. Atmospheric and full-of-heart with the plot around a famous photograph taken in 83’ and the repercussions thereafter. A perfect summertime (or anytime) read. 📖🎧 Pub. 4/8/25

Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for access to this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

A prodigal daughter, learning of her father's death, returns home to finally confess to her brothers and mother why she left all those years ago. The chapters alternate between the present and the family's life in the 1980s.

My description makes it sound like my review should come with trigger warnings. Rest assured, the main female character has a secret, but it is not of the trigger variety.

I like reading sibling stories and families with unconventional upbringings. For the Merricks, Cap and Mama, twins Griffin and Magnus, daughter Ronan, and baby Dylan, living in a van, driving up and down the coast of California to catch those golden waves, and letting the world be your school, seems very cool. But that kind of life does come at a price.

Sometimes, I don't like when chapters flip us back and forth, BUT the author's writing flowed nicely and I enjoyed both of the timelines very much. Also, I just really appreciated the family dynamics. I am curious what the future for all of the Merricks.

A solid novel that I would recommend readers put in that beach bag.

Set in the 80’s, a family of 6 living off the grid in a 1968 step van, which they nicknamed the Gull going up & down the West Coast from one surf town to the next, rejecting traditional schooling & consumerism in favor of an untethered, outdoor existence. Until one photo threatens to destroy it all & the family is forced to question everything they believe in.

I absolutely adored this family, their closeness & tight-knit bond that they all had with each other. Their life was so simple but yet they had everything, more than most families who have monetary means but no love for each other. Their father would tell his kids that these “citizens”, as he referred to them, were “stuck” while we can just get in the Gull and just glide to wherever we want. I think we all dream about living a life of endless summers, but we just get up the next morning and do the same thing over & over again. I could not get enough of this book & savored every minute of it. I didn’t want it to end.

The Merrick Family—Legends in the surfing world. Drifters, who follow the coastline in their old van, the Gull.

The interesting story covers the family’s values, different beliefs, secrets, complicated relationships, and their love of surfing. The novel is emotional, at times, especially when they’re obviously betrayed by their peers, and constantly ostracized by much of society, yet revered as surf celebrities because of a rare family photograph. A newspaper reporter brings it all into perspective at the end. It’s obvious the author spent a lot of time plotting characterizations for the family.

This is a wonderful story. I hope many readers will enjoy.

I honestly read and reviewed a digital arc provided by Harlequin Publishing/Graydon House. All opinions are my own.

I’m really surprised that this book doesn’t have a higher rating. My family teases me that I can be a tough critic, and I often don’t find books that I give 5 stars to. But I really liked this book from beginning to end! I really didn’t see where it was going and it left me with surprises along the way. I didn’t guess that Pauline was mama’s sister. I thought she might be her daughter that she visiting on her “rambles”. I think the author did a great job tying up all the questions I had as I read. It kept me reading to the end! It was the story of Ro, a girl who lived a nomadic life in a van with her “surfer” family along the Pacific coast in the 70-80’s.

What a great read I fully enjoyed this family saga. Ronan Merrick has lived a nomadic life with her parents and three brothers. It's the 1980’s and they travel along the California coast. Living in a van, and finding the best places to surf. When a reporter takes a photo of the family with their boards, they end up being “famous”....and it's not what they wanted.

In 2002, Ronan is living the more normal life in Oregon with a new name after she left when she was 17. She has been estranged from her family, and her brother contacts her to tell her their father has passed away. She reunites with the family to memorialize him, where things from the past come to light. Can they reconnect as a family now, or will it just too much?

I loved the atmospheric descriptions of the beach life that they lived. I found that to be a unique plot that I haven't really read about. It had the perfect amount of mystery and suspense to keep me flipping the pages. I thought the characters were really well developed and their story just grabbed me. An enjoyable read!

The Merrick family are nomads. They live out of a van and stay out of public eye as much as possible. They have rules about not being photographed or talking to strangers about their personal lives. One day a photo of the family surfing is published, causing a rift in the family dynamic. Ronan left home at 17 and now has a family of her own. Her brother shows up, letting her know that their father died and they want her home to send him off. Ronan is hesitant, but decides to go home and face her past.

I loved this story! At first, I was a bit stuck with the writing style and did consider not continuing, but I’m SO glad I did. I binged the book in one sitting and ended up crying by the end. I really appreciated reading about a family with a different lifestyle from mine, learning how they navigated and grew from the life they had as kids. This was a beautiful story that speaks to multiple generations of the Merrick family.

This book is a must for your beach bag this summer!! A family with four children traveling the coast of California spending the days surfing the various beaches. They are a nomadic family living in their van completely off grid. The story is told in past and present timelines. The atmospheric description really set the setting for the book and this family. I just felt like I was living with these kids in the van as they experienced life. This had a little bit of mystery, family dynamics, and secrets.

The audiobook was narrated by Ann Marie Gideon. She did such a great job telling this story and I just found myself living with this family and spending my summer at the beach.

I loved this family story set in the 1980s and early 2000s. An unusual, free spirited family of "ocean babies" comes to terms with their past at their father's memorial service.

Set in Santa Barbara and off of Catalina, I picked this one up at my local bookshop's recommended table in Montecito and I'm glad I did. The author has an essay about the real family behind her inspiration. Recommended!

I have read all of Amy Mason Doan's novels. She's known for presenting idyllic summer memories ranging from the 1970s to the 1990s. In her latest novel, The California Dreamers, she does this as well. Going back and forth between the 1980s and early 2000s, Amy weaves a captivating story about a family living off the grid and surfing whenever possible.

This novel had a unique premise and I appreciated that. It almost brought me back to when I would read The Boxcar Children when I was growing up. I felt like I was at the beach with Ronan and her unconventional family. The descriptions really brought the story to life and the narrative kept me captivated the entire time.

I could see why Ronan's reason for leaving was so difficult in terms of how it affected her family and I liked how everything was slowly revealed, like a package being opened a little bit at a time while getting to peek inside every so often.

I only had a couple concerns. The first was that the timing was inconsistent. Since this was an advanced copy, I can only hope that was fixed for the final publication. Also, I didn't understand the surf terminology. It would have been helpful to have a glossary or images.

The California Dreamers is definitely worth checking out for an interesting read! Now that summer's over, it's a great way to recapture the feeling. This novel is perfect for fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid, Karma Brown, and Jessica Strawser.

(Trigger warnings below.)

Movie casting suggestions (focusing on the 2002 timeline as it is easier to cast adults):
Ronan: Maika Monroe
Griff: Cole Sprouse
Mag: Dylan Sprouse
Dyl: Charlie Tahan
Mama: Marley Shelton
Pauline: Gillian Jacobs

I am a big fan of Amy’s books so I was thrilled when I heard a new one was coming. Amy’s skill as an author seems to improve with every book and I have enjoyed all of them! This one is set in the 1980’s in California and follows a family that lives off the grid in their old van. This family of six travels up and down the coast and spends their days surfing. They always try to keep a low profile but an iconic and surprise picture of them makes them famous. While trying to maintain their lifestyle the picture and the scrutiny following it causes a fracture in the family. Years later and after the death of the patriarch they once again come together after one member has been away for years. A journalist has found them and wants to do a story on their life and they fear what could be disclosed in the article and being thrust back into the spotlight. Many secrets and misunderstandings between the family are revealed as they spend this time together. Will they be able to unite again or will the fractures continue? The atmospheric and descriptive writing is so well done you can feel yourself transported to each setting. I like a character driven novel and the character development was well written. I enjoyed the mystery and the secrets that became known as the book progressed. Overall another great book from this author. Be sure to preorder this one!!

I knew right from the moment I picked this book up, that there would come a time in the narrative when I would be hit with this incredible, emotional weight of the story I'd been told. I know because I've read some of her other work.

There are so many thoughts I have on this book that I don't even know where to start. Maybe it'll be with this: the author's attention to detail and respect for research and weaving in the real world was what truly made this book shine. I thought it was truly a beautiful exploration of an unconventional worldview and upbringing, as well as a phenomenally well thought out reaction that a child would have toward their parents later in life.

To really review this book with justice, I fear I'd have to write a college level thesis. The description of surfing was so wildly spot on it made me feel like I was out on my own board, riding the waves instead of reading (which was probably what got me through this bout of flat water outside my door to begin with).

I loved this book! California Dreamers was a nostalgic and beautifully written story about an unconventional family living off the grid on the California coast in the 1980s. Having grown up in the 80's is what drew me to this book, along with the gorgeous cover. Amy Mason Doan’s writing completely immersed me in this book, I could smell the salt air of the ocean and hear the crash of the waves. Her vivid descriptions of the California coast in the 1980s brought the setting to life, especially the lavender fields, the van and feel the sand between your toes. There were complex characters, especially Ronan. It is amazing how one picture can change your whole life. This book was thought-provoking and heartfelt. I’ll definitely be reading more by Amy Mason Doan!

There are books where you can't wait to find out how it ends.

And books you can't wait to end.

And then there are books you just don't want to end. This is one of those.

It's the story of a family who live in a former food truck, going from one surfing spot to another, and distancing themselves from "citizens," as they refer them to those of us who live more conventionally.

It alternates between the 1980s, when the protagonist was growing up, the only sister of three brothers, and 2002, after the father passes away. The idealistic parents reminded me a little of those in Kristin Hannah's The Great Alone, though they seem to be more grounded.

Exactly what I needed to read this week!

This opened a door into an incredibly unusual but somehow relatable family living in their converted van home on the beach (or beaches.) I greatly enjoyed the story and the way it was woven together in a satisfying way.
Recommend highly.

I loved everything about this book! Really enjoyed all the 1980's nostalgia and reading about the carefree life of a family of surfers who live off the grid. Spoiler alert ... very emotional and deep at times!
