One girl. One boy. One bargain…

Mina
Look, I’m no social butterfly. I don’t care what the extroverts say—talking to people is scary. I’d rather hang out with my books than actual human beings. Books don’t call you names or dump water over your head in the cafeteria.

But high school is almost over, and I’m realizing I have nothing to show for it but good grades. I need to come out of my shell if I want to get the attention of a certain football player, and I’m going to need help. My neighbor Cohen is the man for the job. Sure, his attractiveness makes me nervous, and yes, he smells obnoxiously good all the time, but it’s fine. I’ve got this.

I mean, probably.

I’ve probably got this.

Cohen
Mina’s got a thing for my buddy Jack. I’ve got a thing for getting into a good college. My plan is I’ll help Mina get Jack’s attention if she’ll tutor me for the ACT. No big deal, right? But working with Mina isn’t going to be easy. Her social skills are iffy at best, and don’t get me started on her (lack of) flirting skills. It’s a good thing she makes me laugh, because we’re going to be spending a lot of time together…

“If I kiss you, it will feel real, Mina. You’ll think it’s real.”

Wow, now this was a pleasant surprise. I usually stay clear of high school or teen fiction but this? I’m so so glad, i gave this one a chance!
This was PERFECT. The characters were relatable, fun and so hilarious. You would think that it would be a typical cliché but no no you’ve got it all wrong. There was nothing foolish about these teen characters which we usually read in teen romance which i ABSOLUTELY adored🥺

The romance was so beautiful 😭 I loved the way Cohen and Mina’s relationship developed- from friends to more🥺 I loved their banter, i shipped them from the start and I laughed out loud in their fun moments.

I am in awe of this author. She did a fantastic job and it hurts me to see that half of the people don’t even know who she is cause she clearly deserves more recognition. I love how in the book she made it clear that Mina didn’t change herself for a guy but for HERSELF sksks.

The characters were so so well done and i wont ever shut up about it.

There were so many lessons in the book like forgiveness, appreciation for who you are, self-growth which i LOVED.

The respect Cohen had for Mina had me all cjidjcidjc. Did i mention, i loved them together?😩🤍

For a debut novel, Gracie did a great and fantastic job!!! Gonna go start the second one right away!
The only thing which I didn’t really like was that it was too clean but yeah i do get it😫

“I don’t care what you wear or how you do your makeup or your hair, Mina. Go back to the baggy clothes if you want. Jack cared about that stuff. And in the past, I have too, but…” He shakes his head. “Somehow with you I just don’t. I just want you, Mina. Bad jokes and all.”

Not gonna lie, I thought a lot about Duff while reading the book but this one is lighter. Definitely exceeded my expectations!⭐

Things I liked:

⭐ The fairy godmother, i.e, Luna. She was so fun, loved her!

⭐ Cohen. He was a nice fun lead.

⭐ The cover. One of the prettiest covers I've seen.

Things I wasn't impressed with:

🔵 The Ending.

🔵 The last thirty percent of the book feels weak. All the witty Scenes are earlier in the book. Alas, a very good YA romance.

Mina loves blending in, she’s actually quite good at it. But now, it’s her senior year and she finally wants to maybe make some friends, put a little more effort into her appearance and maybe stand out. It might have something to do with a cute boy and a lot more to do with wanting to improve herself.

I loved this book. Its solidifies why friends to lovers is truly the superior trope. It’s sweet and funny and reminds me of myself back in high school. Talking to a boy I thought was cute? No chance...I’d just admire them from afar.

This is a total YA vibe from the movie “She’s All That”. I loved seeing Mina come into herself and realize she was funny and cool just the way she was, but it was ok to want more. And let’s not forget about COHEN. ALLLL the heart eyes for him. He makes Mina feel beautiful on the inside and the out. Initial attraction is important and emphasized but he always makes sure Mina feels like she’s more than that.

Their banter is excellent, so many fun and flirty moments that suck you in and make you invest your heart into their relationship and their friendship. They brought out the best in one another and I loved it.

This summer is proving to be a hit with my rom coms and The Eye of the Beholder is no exception ♥️

This is a YA that doesn’t read like so many typical YA novels I’ve read and I loved that! Things I loved about this book:

1) This book is not rife with terrible language and teen sex and I am so grateful. The thing is, I know it happens. But it is not the reality for every high schooler. I get really annoyed reading books that make it seem like everyone is doing it (and then talking about it in detail), because that’s simply not true. So reading a YA novel where sex wasn’t a main theme? Yes, please, and thank you!! I would have no reservations whatsoever handing this book to my own children or nieces and nephews to read.

2) This book also isn’t driven by teenage angst and drama. Is there worry and confusion about decisions coming up, college acceptance, and what is happening in their families? Yes. Is the book driven by teens becoming consumed by those worries or one-upping each other in a game of “who can be the most dramatic”? No. And I thank Gracie for that! I understand the worries that come with knowing your life is changing and wondering how to be fully prepared for those changes. I also understand that some teens are mean and there is absolutely drama in high school (hello, hormones). But most YA novels take that worry and amplify it with so much drama that I tend to eye roll some. (Are you wondering why I ever pick up a YA novel? It doesn’t happen often [personal preference]. But I want to devour every single thing Gracie has ever written, which meant giving a YA novel a chance. I’m so glad I did.) It was refreshing to read a book not driven by excess of drama or angst.

3) These characters are most definitely still teenagers and they still have some good character arcs, but they aren’t immature, petty, or careless.

4) This is a romance (I will try not to step on my soapbox regarding teen romance) but Gracie makes sure they have time to develop that romance. It’s not romance on a whim, they aren’t motivated by sexual desire, and the relationship has depth. They also don’t pledge their undying love for one another while still in high school. They take time after high school to explore their lives and learn what they want. Yay!

5) Cohen and Mina are the sweetest. I loved Mina’s depth of character, her little personality quirks (I also related to her on a fashion level, as I totally bought and wore primarily baggy clothes), and how she decided to push herself to be better. Her little mantra, “this is my year,” was adorable and so motivating! I liked how Cohen was genuinely a good person. He learned how to recognize what he wanted before Mina came into his life and he figured out even more because of things she said to him. I loved that they helped each other gain confidence and both cared about their families.

6) Lydia is a dang cool side character. I am really looking forward to her book because I love her already.

I really, honestly loved this book. Gracie did a fantastic job with this one! I’m impressed with her writing and stories and characters and can’t wait to see where her writing takes her.

When I realized that I had still not read Gracie Ruth Mitchell’s first two books I couldn’t believe myself. Now that I’ve read the first one I am down right scolding myself for waiting so long! This is an absolutely delightful, amusing, swoon-worthy, sweet, YA romance and I just love Mina and Cohen. This book kind of has “She’s All That” vibes but is better, IMO, and has none of the inappropriateness.

Things I loved:
-“This is my year.”
-“As your mentor”
-Haunted House
-Awesome Apple
-“You’re not subtle.”
-Teach me. 😅😍
-“Are these happy tears, or did I misread our relationship horribly?”

Talk about a super satisfying HEA for a high school romance in the form of the perfect epilogue. Sometimes I’m left wanting more when it comes to a YA novel ending, but this one takes the cake. I also completely adore Cohen’s twin sister Lydia and I cannot wait to read her story next! ♥️

TW: Bullying happens to the MC—nothing too intense and it is handled well as a part of the storyline and growth.

Cohen's sister said these wise words (I'd love for her to get her own book!!), and I absolutely fell in love with them!! I also love how the book wasn't just about Mina trying to get a man. The story was about personal growth, forgiveness, vulnerability, family, and so much more! It truly was a wholesome read!

Let's talk about the romance aspect of the book though, shall we? IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. I ADORED IT. I was shipping Cohen and Mina SO FLIPPIN' HARD!! Their student/tutor friendship was adorable and I loved seeing that turn into something more. *wink wink*

Seriously, y'all, Cohen was SWOONY. The perfect mixture of sensitive and confident. 😍😍

As far as content goes: No language! There were some mild innuendo/suggestive comments, including a remark about "sleeping around the football team." Spiked drinks and drugs were mentioned at a party. Characters walked through a haunted house, and the descriptions were VERY detailed/semi-graphic (others may not have a problem with that, but it could be triggering for some readers). And even though the book is considered Christian fiction, the "religious elements" weren't overbearing.

All in all, I enjoyed this book so much! It was a cute, fluffy, fall/winter read with some AMAZINGGGGG kisses. And isn't the cover just ADORABLE?!

I don't usually like fiction about teens/high school - the characters are usually overdrawn charicatures of every bad teenager stereotype you can think of. However, this book was different. The characters were relatively developed and could have been real people. A fun, cute, clean fluff read. I liked this book better than the author's Christmas book, and I look forward to reading more!

this book was SO CUTE. i wasn't bored at like any point (which is rare for me)

the flirty banter between cohen and mina was PERFECT and literally made me gush and smile and the slowburn was just the right amount.

mina was lowk a pick me girl at times but it's okay i will excuse it just this once.

SUCH A GOOD BOOK!!

“I want to answer that it’s because if I kiss her, I’ll fall—completely and irrevocably. Instead I just smile at her as steadily as I can, trying to look teasing. “Because if I kissed you, you would fall immediately in love with me and all other men would be ruined for you forever.”
Such a cute love story. A feel good book

4.5 ✨

💐🌨️🫀

"I don't know a thing about love. But I do know that when this preacher is done marrying my father to Linda, I want to go up there with Mina so that I can promise her the same things my father is promising Linda. To have and to hold. To make her chicken noodle soup when she's sick. To remind her every day how incredible she is."

"I don't need a man. But... I want one. I want this one. I want Cohen, in all his crooked-nosed, wonky-mouthed glory."

📜 Overview: I was NOT expecting this to be that stinkin’ cute.

🫶🏻 Characters: WHO gave Mina the audacity to be so relatable??? I literally highlighted and highlighted so much of her inner dialogue; felt SO seen 😭 And COHEN! He’s such a sweetheart 🥹

💞 Romance: I love Mina and Cohen (Willy and Coco, if you will 😉) SO much; they were so pure and supportive and had me smiling like a fool. This book reminded me why I love friends-to-lovers 🤍

✍🏼 Writing: humorous, sweet, and easy to read!

🍂 Atmosphere/Season: Despite the bright, colorful, spring-esqe cover, this story is set in the fall and winter!

———

CONTENT: I appreciated the cleanness of the romance and the lack of bad language; the little bits of faith content were so sweet!

DISCLAIMER: there are a few occasions that Mina talks about how a couple girls are always dressing skimpy + and how one in particular is always throwing herself at guys; she later thinks that it’s because she equates her worth according to her relationships with men. I know that may trigger or make some people uncomfy, so I thought I’d mention it!

What a freaking adorable YA romcom!

Cohen and Mina take you on an ABSOLUTE rollercoaster of emotions and feelings and I loved every moment!

I went in not knowing it was YA but it was *chef’s kiss* Although there’s a good amount of teenage angst, it didn’t bother me too much (BUT SERIOUSLY KISS ALREADY YOU TWO). I loved Cohen’s and Mina’s thoughtfulness, gentleness, and care for one another. They fought for the other person, and in doing so, fell in love. It was adorable.

This book also has a good message about being yourself, being bold in it, and the right friends will find you. It was golden!

Five out of five! Loved it and am already diving into book two.

I loved this!! I picked this up on a whim. I really like YA contemporaries but sometimes they can be kinda cheesy and shallow... Well, this one wasn’t. And I loved that!

To begin with, the characters were everything! They were amazing. Soo well done and definitely the highlight of this book. They were just soo relatable!!! Like, they are flawed human beings with struggles. But they strive to be better people. They were real and quirky and complex and had so much character. You know? Like they have such distinct personality and quirks. I loved it!
Mina was amazing. I loved her character so much. She’s so nerdy, awkward, funny, kind, fun, and relatable. I related to her on such a personal level, so much so that at times I felt like we were basically the same person. Some of it was just little things and some of it was bigger stuff but either way... It is such a good feeling when you can relate to a character like that, understand them and feel understood at the same time. She’s now definitely one of my favorite characters I’ve read this year.
Cohen was also pretty great too. *wink* I mean, I had mixed feelings about him at times but he totally won me over by the ending. Like totally.
I also really liked Lydia... and I hear she’s getting a story so I’m totally excited for that!!! *happy dance*

I really loved how mature these two were. Sure, they have their immature moments but they realize it. I also love how they deal with mean/ difficult people. Especially Mina. She gives the “mean girl” the benefit of the doubt. She doesn’t just blow Victoria off as a mean person; she tries to understand her and if she can’t do that, she tries to treat her right.

I also loved how Mina consciously thinks about why she is doing things. For instance, making improvements on herself. She does it for herself, not for a guy. I’m really glad that there was distinction there.

This book was just fun to read. It made me laugh, smile, and make giddy noises... but it also made me feel deeper things.

The deeper messages/themes in this book— recognizing your worth, self-growth, forgiveness, relationships, family... I loved that. I also really liked how Mina says she finds her strength in God. The faith elements were very subtle but as this isn’t Christian fiction (that I know of), I wasn’t really expecting it. But I did love the times it was in there!

I love Cohen and Mina together. Their respect for each other (especially Cohen’s respect for Mina) was wonderful. They were so cute, and they really were perfect for each other. I shipped them so hard! I also liked how not-superficial their relationship was. And I love how it was slow-burn too. They started out as friends then best friends then more. And the whole tutor, next door neighbor, and kinda-forced-to-be -together thing? *sigh* I just loved it.

As far as content, it’s clean. Buttt I would recommend it for older teens. Personally I think it’s more for juniors and seniors in high school, or new adults. Partly because they’ll just relate more. Also because there’s some suggestive comments, underage drinking (not the MCs and not made out to be cool), and pretty passionate kisses that happen (although it doesn’t go beyond that so huge thumbs up for that)
But the kissing was a little too detailed for my taste but I’m grateful it didn’t go beyond that.

So in conclusion, I really enjoyed this book! It was fun and deep all at the same time. I loved it!!

Coming from someone who doesn’t typically enjoy YA, this was a surprisingly good read. It reminded me of Better Than The Movies by Lynn Painter but with a different spin. This author took a pretty cliche trope and made it unique, mainly because of the FMC.

I loved Mina’s character. Outwardly, she seemed like a tomboy with her baggy clothes and no makeup, etc. - but she also had traditionally “girly” traits like loving flowers and perfume. I like that the author didn’t make her a caricature or one of those “I’m not like other girls” MCs that you see in a lot of YA books. I also really admired that, even though she was trying to change in order to attract a guy, she was actually pretty confident and content with who she was. She wanted to stay true to herself and not be liked only for her looks. All this to say, the author made her a really layered character and I thought it was quite well done.

I liked Cohen and Mina together, although he wasn’t my favourite H. He was just a bit too immature for me and too stereotypically jock-like - ie., he dated the popular mean girl just because she was pretty, he hung out with the popular crowd despite not liking most of them, etc. However, the chemistry between him and Mina was so good, that was the best part of this book (and something that is often lacking in a lot of romance books).

Even though this was a very predictable read, I never got bored which is pretty rare for me.

Eye of the Beholder was actually the second book I read by Gracie Ruth Mitchell this weekend (after blowing through the highly recommended Maid of Dishonor) and it did not disappoint! This is a high-school romance and it's down really well!! I was turning pages so fast and rereading really adorable sections. I loved Mina and genuinely enjoyed her character arc, and omg COHEN! So sweet. So so so sweet.

I'd say my only issue with this book is that the characters are referred to as "men" and "women." They are highschoolers - they are "boys" and "girls." Sorry to be that person! But drawing lines around how we refer to teens is really important. What I did Iove is the absence of sex, cussing, etc. There are some high-school make out sessions haha but people show restraint and mature behavior. I was pleased!

Another thing I loved was the theme of forgiveness. Mina seriously rose above it all and her character was inspiring and lovely. The relationship between her and Cohen was so true to how young friendships can truly make us better people, as oftentimes highschoolers are presented with struggles that are way above their punching weight. But together, kids can overcome. The help of a true friend can make all the difference!! The way Mina came through for Cohen as he struggled with his parents divorce was so loving and genuine.

I highly recommend! 4.5/5!

I LOVED Eye of the Beholder! I stayed up until 3 in the morning because I couldn’t put it down!

The story was about a high school senior named Mina. She was virtually invisible and didn’t know her worth. She had been crushing on Jack, one of the most popular guys in school, for as long as she could remember. Her neighbor and old childhood friend Cohen hangs with the popular group and is best friends with Jack. When Cohen needs a tutor for the ACT, the neighbors strike up a deal. Mina will tutor Cohen and Cohen will help her get a date with Jack! (I’m not going to spoil any of the story. You’re going to have to read it!)

It was such a sweet story and was written beautifully! I laughed. I cried. I really couldn’t put it down! It is a YA novel but I would recommend to anyone who loves a good clean romance story.

A YA romance well worth your time

Look, I get frustrated at YAs often. There’s SO much drama. And yet, this one was perfection. I had little butterflies in my stomach; I had a huge grin on my face at the end. It’s the type of novel that leaves you sighing with absolute contentment at the end and making you want to swoon. Gracie Ruth Mitchell, you have me hooked. I’m ready to devour all your other novels. I adored Mina and Cohen!!!! So stinking adorable. Easily a 5 star for me.

I love finding a love story between high schoolers that feels so believable. The characters are age appropriate. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for over 30 years and although this is a contemporary setting, it took me back to those days of young love. It’s a real thing but it gets patted on the head as “they’re just kids” in most stories I read. But the author took it seriously and handled it well. The first fourth of the book was slow to me but I kept reading believing it would get better and it certainly did. Will definitely read the next book in the series.

3.5 ⭐️ This book was actually super cute and both FMC and MMC were witty and funny and had personality. Although, there were way too many stereotypes including a big ick of mine: a girl changing her appearance for a guy. (Even though she said she was mainly doing it for herself) Other plot points fell flat for me as well. I did however find myself giggling throughout the book and I do like the neighbors/friends to lovers aspect. It overall was a quick, cute, wholesome read.

I loved how Cohen & Mina’s relationship started with friendship and mutual encouragement. Plus, the boy next door trope is always kinda cute.

And Lydia… ahhh, she’s super sweet & my favourite character!

The writing style is smooth & engaging, and I did enjoy most of the characters. The premise was where I struggled, and that’s a personal preference as I’m not a fan of the “make-over” trope (even though it was more than trying to impress a boy) & angsty high school drama.

This was such a cute gem of a book! I loved the innocence and naivety the characters brought into the book. A cute and clean romance with a focus on discovering who you are and loving yourself through it all. This book had a She's All That storyline, but with kindness and innocence that was thoroughly charming.

Ack! I loved, loved, loved this book! It kind of had a “She’s all that” vibe with a main cast of incredibly likable characters (especially Mina, Cohen, and Lydia). This was such a sweet teen romance! It felt like a mix of A Walk to Remember (minus the emotional devastation) and 13 Going on 30 (minus the time jump).

Just an all-around fun boy-next-door love story that kept me up too late because I just had to finish it.

On my Kindle since 2020.
