Clavell is best known for his epic Asian Saga series of novels and their televised adaptations, along with such films as The Great Escape, The Fly and To Sir, with Love.

It turns out I was duped, as this is not a "seventh book" in the Asian Saga, but more like an abridged edition of Whirlwind. Half or even more pages have been shaved by somebody actually reasonable, so in a sense one could say this is the clearly better and shorter version of the Whirlwind. 52h packed into 17h of audio, not that I have any recollection of the removed parts. That in itself being a commentary on how much I cared about the side-quests. The main scenes I remember were in this one as well and I feel an adequate editor would have been able to shave even more pages off. I mean Erkki driving the Land Rover with the FInnish flag painted on the roof, helicopter spotting them in the rabble, old Khan dying, the new boy, getting some choppers out.
