This is different than the other books I have read by this author but I am so happy to have had a chance to read it.
I may just have to say this is my favorite one yet by the author.
The book features history ,a bit of a mystery ,family,forgiveness and faith.
A book about healing and overcoming ,finding what's really important.
This book was hard to put down and the characters really drew me in.

Y’all.
(Because how else should I begin a review for a southern fiction romance? haha)
Y’all. This book. Is. Amazing.
I have loved every book I’ve read by this author. Yet even so, I have no qualms about saying that The Cedar Key is my very fave so far. It’s the kind of book where all the ingredients for a captivating, 5 star, can’t-put-down read just fall immediately into place and you forget the real world around you for however long it takes you to devour each word, the whole story, in one sitting. The kind of book that breaks your heart a little but heals it even more. The kind of book that draws you in from the very first sentence – “All the stories were gone.” – and leaves you hanging on every word until you reach the end… and then you want still more. More time with these characters. More time with their stories.
The characters are perfectly layered, and readers will see themselves in Casey, even if our stories are different from hers. And for all that we want to reach inside the pages and hug all of Casey’s fragile edges, we just as badly want to reach inside the pages and hug Ryan. For other reasons. (oops. did I say that our loud?) Seriously though, these two characters have a permanent place in my heart now. Casey’s vulnerability, her personal journey, her blossoming into who she was always created to be, her engaging narrative voice that gives us a front row seat to all of the above. And Ryan – blissful sigh. He is not without his own flaws, but he makes up for that with his steady heart, his insightful comfort, the easy way he knows just how to make Casey feel valued and protected without smothering her. Watching him fall in love with Casey… even while she remains completely unaware of his feelings … was truly a pleasure.
And I haven’t even talked about Ida… or Nancy … or Emma… or even Kitty yet. These supporting characters added so much to the story, and I loved each one! They were well developed and provided more heart, more humor, and more reflection to Casey’s journey.
Bottom Line: The Cedar Key is so much more than a romance, though. In fact, the romance is much lighter than what I would normally gush over. Yet, this gentle falling in love feels deeper and sweeter than many I’ve read lately. It’s exactly right for this story & these characters. Because the real heart of this story is Casey’s legacy, an inheritance that far exceeds any house or physical provisions. It’s in the telling of her story that we can all find some more grace, another reminder of Whose we are & how loved we are. It’s where we can find peace in the balance of the good, bad and ugly of life – and how to thank God for it all. I laughed. I cried. I grinned like a fool. And I may or may not have hugged my Kindle after I turned the last page of the ebook. This is a must-read for fans of Beth Troy, Becky Wade, Katherine Reay and, of course, the author herself!

October 5, 2020I read this book in one day, which tells you how engrossing it is! In The Cedar Key, I found a heroine with a solid, believable journey of personal development, a cast of colorful characters, a vividly painted setting, and spiritual truths woven throughout. The lessons Casey learns are relevant to us all. With wit and wisdom, Stephenia H. McGee has penned another winning, meaningful tale full of grace and second chances.

What a lovely book! I was so pleased with realistic, no ott the characters, a satisfying read overall, the many spiritual elements throughout which is what I look for anyway but especially if a book is labeled as such. The resolution and forgiveness themes made such a difference as it is in real life...what an incredible difference it makes to restoring a relationship as well as one's physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health besides! It is probably one of the most difficult to do that's for sure. It's hard to hate someone while praying for them......it will help change us at least. As said before, hurting people usually hurt others; their spitefulness often backfires.
I thoroughly enjoyed this as it was my first time for this author but certainly won't be the last as she has "earned" my admiration and passed the "one chance" basically test of sorts. I can gladly recommend her for anyone.

Five tissue box alert.
My heart feels like it's been pummelled to pulp and then stretched three sizes bigger. I hurt...in a good way. And am definitely better for having read The Cedar Key.
McGee has crafted the kind of richly layered story that a reader has no choice but to feel her way through -- and I think listening to the audible edition narrated by Bryn Austin made it that much more emotional for me.
Casey is a hot mess when we first meet her. Scrappy and prickly and barricaded behind an impenetrable wall of hurt. No one is going to get past her defences. She's been discarded one too many times in her life and she's guarding her heart from everyone and everything. Including God.
But then she finds herself in a quirky little southern town with a host of folks who just won't leave her alone -- for better or worse. Including her deceased grandma who has prepared an intricate trail of discovery through revealing letters and projects. The result is pure magic!
Deep, aching sorrow paired with the hope of new-found faith makes this the kind of stand-out novel we need in Christian Fiction. But there's also plenty of laughter amidst the tears as enduring friendships are made. Not to mention stomach churning angst as someone conspires against Casey. Add in some sweet (but complicated) romance and the result is pure bibliophile bliss!

A nice contemporary Christian story. The characters are likeable and the story’s set in a charming small town. It reminded me somewhat of a Hallmark movie.

Enjoyable contemporary novel about finding peace with where you are at. Casey was adopted and yearns to know why her birth parents didn't raise her. Fortunately, she has the opportunity to meet her paternal grandmother. That opportunity leads to Casey slowing the pace of her life and getting away from her less than ideal life in Atlanta to determine if a different future is possible.
Ryan and Nancy were both wonderful characters. I loved the relationship that developed between Casey and Emma.

Oh, what a heart-rending story of struggle, strife, forgiveness, and unconditional love! Painted into the heart of a small town in Mississippi, this contemporary novel will thoroughly captivate you as Casey launches on a journey to find herself and her biological family's legacy through letters left by her grandmother. Told through the eyes of Casey, we slowly learn why this young woman is so prickly and rude and you can't help but learn to love this woman who trusts no one yet has a deep tender heart underneath. Ryan is a swoony hero - patient, kind, compassionate, and honest but he isn't perfect and does end up needing Casey's help, especially in the youth ministry that he leads. Ryan's mom is the best and knows how to stand firm in love and truth; I want to be like her when I grow up!
Brimming with lovable and real characters, raw emotions, a fascinating plot that melds the past with the present and offers some surprises along the way, wonderful spiritual truths, and beautifully penned words, The Cedar Key will delight every reader.

This might actually be my favorite book by Stephenia McGee! It was pretty different from her other books, but that made it even more interesting! I loved Ryan right away and grew to love Casey too. I loved the messages in this book as well. I’m so glad that I read this!

I liked so many things about this book. I laughed. I shed a tear or two. In some areas I could identify with the MC. I liked the unraveling of her past and the clues her grandmother left to point her to the mystery of her life. Highly Recommend!

The Cedar Key by Stephenia H McGee is a most charming Christian contemporary novel that will warm your heart, leaving you smiling and hopeful.
The novel deals with loss, belonging and roots. Loss cuts us to our core. We see the pain but there is hope too as a character made provision for healing from beyond the grave. The reader becomes acquainted with a much loved grandmother through her letters. We see a heart filled with love.
There are many big hearts within the novel as a community opens its doors and homes to a newcomer. The small community pulls together to meet any needs it sees.
A character struggles with her past – feelings of hurt, insecurity and abandonment cause a heart to be locked away to prevent more hurt. Jesus came to free us from our past and our hurts. He calls us to come to Him. “You are not defined by your past. You are defined by God.”
Often when we look back we can see the footprints of God on our lives. He walked with us even when we did not know Him.
Prayer is important. We must pray about everything and worry about nothing. “It’s in God’s hands… don’t waste energy worrying.” A kind heart commits lives to God. “Those reasons were soaked in prayer.”
When life is hard we can bring our true emotions to God. “The Maker of the universe wasn’t at all intimidated by my rage.” Our heavenly Father wants us to be real with Him, to show Him the true version of ourselves.
There is a search for roots, to find a “comforting sense of belonging.” Even when we are alone physically, we are not alone spiritually as God has promised to never leave us. “You… won’t be alone. God is always with you.”
Hurting souls recognise each other. It is beautiful to witness the buds of love and care take root.
Within the story a quilt is made. Individual pieces of material holding memories are sewn together. This is a motif for our lives. God is the master quilter who turns our memories and our messes into masterpieces.
I adored The Cedar Key. I always love all Stephenia McGee’s novels but this is my favourite so far. It spoke to my heart and soul filling me with love, hope and care.

“He [Jesus] gathered the plain, regular and unwanted”… wow, we should do likewise.

Wow, I can't ever remember a time that I had the luxury to read an entire book in one day. This story hooked me from the start, kept my attention, and had me turning pages until 2:00 in the morning! The Cedar Key by Stephenia H. McGee is a beautiful story!
I wrote down so many great quotes from this book as I was reading it. Hopefully, someday I can say some of these words to someone I love.

I have loved reading McGee’s books for quite some time now. She’s written some of my favorite historical novels! I was not sure how the switch to a contemporary setting was going to go, not because she’s not a fantastic writer, just because it’s different and I know that can be difficult for a writer. Make no mistake – this book is phenomenal. It absolutely took my breath away.
Let me start by saying that as I was reading Casey’s journey, I felt like I was on my own journey. While my life is not like Casey’s, the emotions and certain circumstances she dealt with were totally relatable. And when Ryan would bestow his words of wisdom to her, I felt like he was talking directly to me. Or when Casey would read her grandmother’s letters, a little part of me felt like they were mine. That’s how wonderfully written this book is!
That’s not really the best part to be honest with you. This book is filled with emotion, forgiveness, prayer, growth, and so much more. But even more important, it is filled with the gospel. Not in a preachy, in your face way. Now, it’s natural yet powerful. Casey learns some hard truths about her own spiritual walk that I think point out some things we all need to consider. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but I will say this. There is a big difference in believing there is a God, and believing that God will do things for us. This book drives that point home is such a graceful way.
Yes there’s a little romance, a little mystery, and some twists and turns along the way. But ultimately this book is about the truth of who we are as people, as God’s children, and understanding that we are worth something. Especially to our Heavenly Father. This is a book, and message, that will stick with me for a long time.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Stephenia H McGee's other novels so I was quite excited to dive into this one. With a contemporary setting it was diverse from her others, however her deep love and appreciation for history--good or bad--was still clearly in the forefront. Sometimes it takes reconciling with your past before you can face your future. You can spend your whole life running, but until you stop and face whatever it is that breaks your heart, you'll never get off the hamster wheel. It's so much easier to identify this in others, but reconciling with it yourself isn't an easy ride. Although my story itself is different, as someone who reacts to and processes life in a similar way to Casey there were conversations and emotions that swirled through the pages of this book that touched and convicted my heart on very deep levels. This book is exactly what I needed right now. I'm glad I read it and I highly recommend it.

I'm left a driviling, emotional mess in the floor! My first book by Stephenia McGee....I know, I know....many of you are saying "what took you so long"? Yeah, I'm asking the same thing and I have no good excuse.
So messy lives, how many of us can raise our hands to that? The perfect time for God to step in and show us the purpose of those messes and how He can perfectly fit those misshapen pieces of our lives back together. A recycling, if you will. Casey aka "Cassandra" had her recycling turn. Just when she thought she was at the end of her rope, God swoops in the form of Ida; a grandmother she never met or knew she had. There's where her life gets even messier. I'm a cook, so I understand that I make a big mess before I'm done creating whatever dish I'm making. The before picture is vastly different than the after picture. Kind of reminds me what Casey goes through. She must first learn her past, to move on in her future. A whole lotta growing happens and truths about herself she must deal with....the before picture. By the end of the story, her after picture is a beautiful creation only God can cook up. No spoilers here, because the reader will be taken on a journey of the heart and learn lessons uniquely theirs alone. Just expect to be wrung through the the muck before the final washing. There is hope & healing waiting for Casey at the end, and prayfully, you as the reader too. Because I tell you, McGee pulls out ALL the emotional strings to tie you in a knot! You'll be left with spiritual truths so big, you need a quiet place to soak them all up & internalize them in your soul.
Let's not get started on Ryan because my review would take up pages & pages! Suffice it to say, he's the perfect hero material....but not without his own flaws and past mistakes. The gentle slow-burn pace of romance was exquisite. I love how McGee makes it feel natural to the story without overpowering it. That's saying a lot for me because I'm a huge die-hard hopeless romantic reader who lives for the unfolding love story. I thought sure I would be frustrated waiting, but no, it was exactly what this particular book needed. Such a sweet revealing between Ryan & Casey, I literally sighed out loud!
I'm sure my review makes very little sense, because this story was all that and more. You ever have a book hangover? Yep, that's me after reading "The Cedar Key"...it's going to take me a few days to want to let go of these characters and story. That's a very good thing in my book!

Captivating! Exactly what I have come to expect from this gifted storyteller! This hard-to-put down read captured my attention and heart from the beginning. It is the story of Cassandra “Casey” Adams an emotionally wounded young woman struggling with issues of abandonment and loss and seeking to make peace with her past and neighbor Ryan Watson who has been chosen by her late grandmother, Ida, to help and support her on her journey to unlock family secrets that will explain her past and determine her future. The characters both leading and supporting are well-crafted and memorable. The deeper than usual insight into the supporting characters adds depth and interest to the read. One of my favorite characters is Nancy, Ryan’s mother, who takes Casey “under her wing” and helps her see things more clearly. I especially like the strong, inspiring faith element affirming the spiritual values of grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation. I highly recommend this intensively satisfying read from one of my favorite authors.

The great lessons of life i learnt from reading this book were profound. Lessons I intend to keep practicing through life. Some parts of the book made me just want to cry because of the deep life lessons illustrated. It felt like an old godly grandmother sitting me down and giving you truths to help navigate life. I love books like this that make me ponder, feel and look at life with a fresh and thankful perspective.
In more than one way I and Casey are kindred spirits. I loved watching her transform through her travails in the story. She was an adopted child and life didn't go so well with her. Things began to unravel when she received an invitation from her biological grandmother.
Oh sweet Ida! Everyone needs an Ida in their lives. People who love God and those who never give up on us.
I loved how this story went. I loved the suspense, mystery, forgiveness, love, second chances and purpose portrayed in the story. One thing that shone so true and bright was God always looking out for us even we are not conscious of Him.

Author Stephenia McGee has become one of my favorite historical fiction authors, so this one was different as it’s a contemporary story. I’ll admit that did take me a chapter or so to adjust to but once I did I couldn’t stop reading.
McGee’s characters have incredible personalities. Casey is dealing with loss and abandonment, which McGee writes about honestly but gently. Grandma Ida put quite the puzzle in place; one I couldn’t figure out. And then there’s the handsome neighbor. There will be characters you absolutely love, and a couple you won’t like. But you’ll also figure out why you don’t like them, and may even end up sympathetic towards them.
I loved how Grandma Ida’s possessions were described so thoroughly and with such warmth. It was truly beautiful and reminded me of some of my antique items from my grandparents.
A story of hope and healing along with surprises, I highly recommend it!

I have read several of Stephenia H. McGee’s and have really enjoyed them. Her newest release does not disappoint. It is different from what I am used to by her but still so very good. I had the pleasure getting to know Casey. The story involves history, mystery and suspense that I loved.
I am giving The Cedar Key four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy clean and inspiring fiction.

I really enjoyed this story! It was such a nice relaxing and easy read yet it still has some great hard-hitting truths in it too. I just loved Casey, she's so relatable in so many ways! If you want a feel-good small town story with a touch of mystery and romance then give this book a go. This is the first of Stephania H. McGee's books I've read and I can't wait to read her other books!

She was abandoned first by her birth mother, then by her adopted parents and then by her manipulative boss/boyfriend. When her grandmother, Ida Macintyre, finds her and brings her to her birth father’s family home in Maryville, Mississippi, she hopes to find answers to who she is. But Ida dies of cancer shortly after they meet and Casey finds herself with a large Victorian home, but still no answers.
Ida, however, has always had a plan, a plan that she prepared prior to her death, to challenge Casey to explore her past and the stories of her family. With the help of Ryan Watson, now her neighbor, and Ryan’s mother Nancy, Casey explores her past through the letters that Ida prepared before she died. The letters have tasks for Casey to complete and stories to accompany them. And as Casey completes the projects and gets involved with Ryan and his youth ministry, she learns and grows into the woman Ida saw beneath her shell. She had believed in God since she was a child, but now she believes God.
This is a book I will read again and again. The story itself is standard – lost woman inherits house that she turns into a home with help from others – but gems of wisdom from Ida’s letters and from the friendships Casey forms, make this a very special book. I am drawn to books (and movies, for that matter) where the character develops, matures and becomes the person she was all along, the person she was meant to be.

Another great novel from one of my favorite authors. I loved how the characters were so real with real struggles. Casey struggles with her past but closes up and tries to hide behind a smile. I love that Ryan seems to always be there for Casey no matter what she’s going through. Why did grandmother Ida chose Ryan to give Casey the letters that reveal secrets she had been hiding.
Haley tries to fix her past mistakes. Mira Ann’s jealousy makes her do things that she shouldn’t do. So several characters had to deal with things we have to deal with sometimes. Can Casey forgive the ones that did her wrong? Can Haley get past her hurts? So much to read about in this story.

Having several of Stephenia McGee’s books on my ever-growing TBR pile when an opportunity came up to read The Cedar Key, I was excited to read it. I was not disappointed in the least. Cassandra’s story drew me in immediately and never let me go until the satisfying end. Unexpectedly finding herself the owner of her grandmother’s home, Casey comes to a small Mississippi town hoping to find answers to her past—a past full of hurts and disappointments. The Cedar Key is a captivating story of second chances, of recognizing that just perhaps a loving God has been there all the time and has found value in His children, not because of who they are but because of who He is. The characters are strong and vibrant and some of them were people I wish I had in my life. The neighbors, Ryan and his mom, continually speak encouragement and wisdom into Casey’s life. The author has crafted her story with a bit of humor, friendships, maturing faith in God, and a romance...what's not to like! Readers who enjoy contemporary small town romance will not want to miss reading The Cedar Key. I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

Stephenia H. McGee is a new author to me and I honestly didn't know much about the book when I won it from Goodreads, so I started on an unknown adventure when I opened this book. And what an adventure it was.
Casey finally connected with her grandmother shorty before the elderly woman passed away. Before she died, Ida left notes and letters for Casey which lead her on a journey of discovery. Neighbors and towns people try to help her, but being an independent woman with a multitude of issues, it was hard for her to accept their help.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Casey discover the family secrets, as she starts to embrace the community, a community filled with loving and caring people. This was a very enjoyable story and I will be checking out more stories by this author.

The Cedar Key is a story of first accepting God's love, knowing you are valuable and then extending that love and forgiveness to others! Casey did not have a good childhood with her adoptive parents and has made poor choices as a young adult. She meets her paternal grandmother shortly before the lady dies and leaves her large house and money to Casey. Her grandmother has left letters with clues to be delivered to Casey at the house at specified times. The young minister next door and his mother were close friends of her grandmother and befriend Casey when her life is difficult. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Cedar Key as Casey realizes she is valuable to God and to others. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

Another great book by Stephenia H. McGee. I can't say enough that Ms. McGee is certainly talented. Her gift of putting together a story, and making me want to keep reading more, is consistent with her other books. While my love is for Christian Historical Fiction, this Christian Contemporary Fiction is a hit with me. The story is so real, authentic, and definitely a page-turner. This story could actually be happening just down the street, or across town. Ms. McGee not only tells a clean story, but she also inspires faith and trust in God in her books. Read this book. You will not be disappointed.

What a wonderful book! It is well written and hooks you on the first page. This story is full of hope and forgiveness, it has just enough drama to keep you turning the pages to see what happens next.
