No New Things: A Radically Simple 30-Day Guide to Saving Money, the Planet, and Your Sanity

Rate this book
Written and read by award-winning sustainability expert Ashlee Piper comes this witty, no-nonsense guide to regaining control over your time, consumerist impulses, and financial and mental wellness.

For nearly two years, Ashlee Piper challenged herself to buy nothing new. And in the process, she got out of debt, cut clutter, crushed her goals, and became healthier and happier than ever—all the things she’d always wanted to do but “never had time to” (because she was mindlessly scrolling, shopping, spending, and stressing). After a decade of fine-tuning, No New Things guides readers through the same revolutionarily simple challenge that has helped thousands of global participants find freedom and fulfillment in just thirty days.

The audiobook follows the rise of what Piper calls “conditioned consumerism” and how it sneakily hijacks our time, money, and mental bandwidth, as well as harms the planet. From there, listeners follow customizable daily action items that bring about the ease and richness of a life less bogged down by spending and stuff, without compromising on style, convenience, or fun.

Whether you’re a bona fide shopaholic or someone who just wants to buy less and live more, No New Things is the antidote to modern overwhelm.

May 2025- This book was great. There are action items for each day in a 30 day “no new things” challenge. I’ve tried to do “no spend” months before and it never works out 🥴 I’m excited to try this approach! Will report back how I did to keep myself accountable. Wish me luck!

Love it. I feel i learned many different skills to prevent myself to spend on things i don’t need.it felt like I was talking to a friend or receiving advice from a friend. The speaker was able to give the positive energy through out the audio book. Her voice was very calming. There were moments I wanted to cry because those were some issues I had but didn't know how to go about about it. I was very helpful and I have to tried implement it to my daily financial life. Thank you for letting me hear the audiobook and for helping me find ways to control my spending.

I liked this—it provided a lot of ideas about how to stop the urge to buy and consume new items (that we don’t really need) and which create a lot of waste on our planet, and how to more sustainably source and get rid of items so that they can still be used and not take up space in a landfill. I think it would have been better to read it in book form rather than do an audiobook because it would have been easier to follow along to the daily plan for the 30 days.
