Surprisingly good though I expected a little bit more action.

1. First things first, I do love the cover. Will surely would pick this up and get intrigued if I were walking on a bookstore.
2. The 1st chapter automatically captured my attention which is an A+.
3. The writing-style is so, so good and the dialogues? HILARIOUS!
4. Fast-paced but not action-packed. Considering the synopsis, I seriously expected a lot of twists and turns in this book but instead, we got a pretty typical YA novel, I guess though don't get me wrong, it still is a great book.
5. The romance was great. Slow-burn. It's not forced. We often read or watch in every stories that whoever saves the girl will be the love-interest which also happens in this one but you know, it takes a while for their romance to move.
6. I do love the two main protagonist. Jane despite her flaws, I still could understand her coming from her circumstances and Cade, well, I do love him but he's just too good to be true. He's like this type of ya hero that would make all the girls swoon, including me, of course.
7. The sidekicks are totally one of the strongest assets of the novel. I mean, the gang is just so hilarious. They're a bunch of typical ya highschoolers but not annoying.
8. The only anticipation I guess I have throughout the novel was Jane Doe's real name. Truth be told, we barely know anything about her which kinda pisses me off.
9. Up to the ending, I still have so many unanswered questions. What frustrates me more is that, the climax was 1 page away from the ending like what the hell. It's an open-ending, you could say that.
10. I think I would'e love this book MORE if we somehow got longer ending.
11. What made me really like about this book was the alternate POV. We get to read both the protagonists' mind and not just the heroine.
12. Overall, this could somehow be a great movie or a Netflix series. I totally can see its potential.

Will I recommend this? Yes!

The title sounds super cheesy, the cover is kind of off-putting for me, BUT I enjoyed reading this book. It's been so long since I'd enjoyed a good YA novel (most of those nowadays are just crappy replicas of crappy originals).

There's nothing particular I liked about it; I'm not even a fan of the YA genre as you would have guessed by now.

Let's see. The writing is good. . I was hooked from the first few lines. It's not pretentious and neither childish. The style was cool too; the way they've used multiple POVs and kept each super short. At one point two POVs merge and that was a great idea too. (It was a lovemaking scene;))

#There's romance (it's high school, drama and all--though it's not too are-you-kidding-me kind of sloppy)

#There isn't much action, which works in my favor cause I like to watch that shit, not read about it.

#There is a sense of thrill. It kept me wanting to know what happens next.

#There are all the things fans of the friendship genre (is that's what it is called?) will enjoy

#The setting is Texas and I like me some southern books. And movies. And good tv series...

#I knew all the while the ending is gonna be happy but that never made me enjoy reading it any less. And I like that in a book

# I finished it within a day. Two readings, with a snack-n-pee break in between. That translates to : "It's Good. Go Read it."

You know how some movies are so bad they're actually good? And then they become one of your all time favorites? This thought came to my mind while reading-- if ever this was made into a movie, it would be one of those kinds (for me alteast). Okay, that reads wrong! I just mean it won't be the same as reading the book. Or maybe it could be a commercial hit, who knows? If in the right hands it could be even more. . .

To be honest, it's not very special or original--there isn't any shocking revelation or the aesthetics of routine life, or whatever you look for in a unique read.. but I always say how there's a right time for every book, and for me the time for this one was right. Hence I was able to enjoy it without being too judgemental or grumpy or bitchy.

I wish you the right time too!

This is genuinely the best piece of writing I’ve read in a very long time. I’m 22 years old and very picky about which shows, movies, or books deserve my attention, but when I like something, I REALLY like something. I could have read Hide With Me in one day, but purposefully slowed down because I didn’t want it to end. My sister and best friend read the book immediately after me and we are all absolutely obsessed (and equally upset that it’s over).

Hide With Me wastes no time to get right into the meat of the story. From the beginning, I was hooked. Structurally, I’d say this book is perfect. There is no lengthy/wasteful exposition. Sorboni SHOWS us, rather than tells us, the setting through her rich characters and dialogue. No detail is superfluous. Every word is carefully chosen, and moves the plot forward. Additionally, each chapter is fairly short and switches off between each character’s perspective.

Sorboni accurately captures the nuances of young love, and youth in general. In many ways, Hide With Me reminds me of Stranger Things: a small group of kids who have to fight against a powerful and dangerous group of adults (in the case of Hide With Me, it’s a Mexican drug cartel) and as the reader, we root for them, and we believe in them. Peppered in with this thrilling adventure is a budding love story, rooted in friendship. Sorboni somehow perfectly depicts the feeling of a crush, so much so that I myself felt the butterflies that the characters felt when they accidentally brushed hands or shared a smile.

Before this book, I had never read or heard of a young adult novel with a Mexican drug cartel as the antagonist. This is what we need! I can’t say enough positive things about this book. It has everything I would want in a book. If you are reading this right now, stop and go read Hide With Me. We need more from you, Sorboni! Write more books!

Hide With Me by Sorboni Banerjee, 358 pages. Razorbill (Penguin), 2018. $18.

Content: Language: R (70 swears; 6 “f”); Mature Content: PG-13; Violence: R.

BUYING ADVISORY: HS – OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Seventeen-year-old Cade finds a girl bleeding in his family’s corn field. As he tries to help her, she begs him not to take her to the hospital because she is hiding from someone. Cade has his share of secrets with his abusive father, so he feels a need to protect this girl's secrets. Cade hides the girl he calls Jane in an outbuilding on the farm. As Cade and Jane start to develop a friendship, Cade realizes that Jane’s problems stem from the drug cartel that their town on the border has trouble with. Cade and Jane try to help each other find a way for Jane to get away.

I couldn’t put this book down. It was super intense from page one. I liked the characters and action-packed story line. I do wish the ending was better explained, as the last chapter seems to be a stream of conscious that is supposed to imply what happens to the characters in the future. The violence is mature as it describes multiple deaths that are doled out by the cartel and the actions of an abusive parent.

This book has everything you’re looking for! Romance, check. Edge-of-your-seat suspense, check. Keep you up past 4 AM because you HAVE TO KNOW what happens next, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK! Hide With Me hooked me from the very first pages, and I literally couldn’t put it down…sleep? Who needs sleep?? And I’m normally a die-hard fantasy fangirl, but Cade and Jane stole my heart and introduced me to the world of YA thrillers. And it wasn’t just Cade and Jane, I completely fell in love with JoJo’s fiery, confident personality and Matteo’s steady, consistent presence, and pretty much all the friends surrounding the main characters. The friendship comradery is reminiscent of the Court of Dreams in ACOTAR series (SJ Maas) and Six of Crows (L Bardugo)…like I said, fantasy fangirl through and through. If I read a book—and absolutely love it—set in the real world without magic, you know it has to be something special. If you’re looking to get swept away in page-turning action and a tantalizing slow-burn romance, then definitely stop right now and just buy this book! When I look for books, I want to know 2 things: will the story suck me into the world and never let go of me, and will I fall in love alongside my main people, and this book delivers above and beyond on both of these. One last thing, in the moments Hide With Me let me catch my breath, I was lured in by beautiful imagery and poetic sentences and masterful language. Fantastic read, highly recommend, you won’t be disappointed!

Despite a few utterly far-fetched and impossible-to-believe moments, this was a solid YA thriller that touched on issues of abandonment, identity, grief, friendship, and growth. It had both romance and an important multicultural thread and was crafted with some beautiful and evocative language. Fast-paced and high-interest, I can see many young readers really liking this novel.

This is an interesting YA novel presenting perspectives not often discussed. I appreciate that the author shows through the story how the cartels are not just a Mexican problem, they are a regional problem involving Americans and Mexicans alike. The bad guys are from both sides. And while the central relationship has some teen angst, it’s not too much given the story. Worth reading! 4 stars

I listened to this on audiobook. The story is intriguing at first but the plot, teenagers vs the Mexican drug cartel is far-fetched. I enjoyed it for its story line and character but I don't need to hear about teenagers making out or engaging in sex. Yuck.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The story and creative descriptive writing made for such an interesting and easy read. I read the book in 2 days and could not put the book down. My 15 year old daughter is reading it now and loves it. Such a perfect balance of young love, adventure and mystery. I loved the story taking place in Texas and Mexico with the focus of love and family. I cannot wait to read this brilliant writer's next book.

This book was pretty good! When I first checked it out, I was curious because the description didn't really say too much about the book. I will say it is not what I expected, but that's not a bad thing! This book was the perfect mix of suspense and drama, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! My only complaint is how the book ended. It didn't really tie up any loose threads and kinda just left wondering. Even though the ending was not completely satisfactory, I still enjoyed this book! ❤️

This review was originally published on Lone Star Literary Life.

Sorboni Banerjee’s timely debut young adult fiction, Hide with Me, catches fire on the very first line, “The girl was like a train,” and the story never stops burning, filling the pages with tension, heartache, young love, loyalty, deception, and constant fear.

When Cade stumbles across the bloody, beaten, and barely alive ‘Jane Doe’ in a cornfield, his life tumbles into chaos that is both terrifying and beautiful. Positioned on the US/Mexico border, Tanner, Texas, is no stranger to drug cartels’ rivalries, brutalities, and relentless presence. With too much knowledge and a bag full of cartel money, Jane strengthens that evil presence when she collapses in that cornfield near Tanner, bleeding, broken, and desperate for a safe haven and a place to hide.

The bond between Cade and Jane is instant, but hats off to the author for allowing the romance to build slowly and realistically. Both teenagers are simply trying to survive the unfair hand that life has dealt them; however, Cade is dreaming of a way out of Tanner on a football scholarship, and Jane is dreaming of a way in on the delicate hope of a normal life.

The writing is lyrical yet relatable and engaging. The short chapters flit back and forth between Cade and Jane, with the occasional appearance of the ferocious cartel enemy, Lobenzo, the Wolf Cub. Those brief glimpses through Lobenzo’s eyes are chilling and eerie and remind the reader that the demon is closing in. But Cade and his friends embrace Jane and gather her into their protective circle, giving her the opportunity to hide in plain sight as a typical high school student.

Unfortunately, hiding is usually temporary and offers a false sense of normalcy because “When you keep getting pushed back, over and over again, you have to be realistic about what you can reach.”
In addition to including the grisly truth of drug cartels, the author touches on many other difficult topics: broken families, domestic violence between a father and son who are equally damaged and heartbroken from betrayal, a girl abandoned and pushed into the ‘system’ to fend for herself, and a terrified town that harbors corruption. But the minute Jane falls into that small Texas town, the slow process of healing, both the physical and emotional wounds, finally begins.

Hide with Me is far more than a coming of age young adult novel about the struggle of new love. This story is perfect for anyone who enjoys a well-told tale filled with enough tension to keep the plot going full steam ahead, culminating and crashing into a smoking climax. The author weaves together panic and hope, secrets and honesty expertly and with no rough edges.

The ending chapters will have you cringing, wondering, cheering, and finally contemplating the story as a whole and how a young boy can save a young girl, how that same girl can save that same boy, and how they both can save friends, family, and the entire town.

Hide With Me was a fast-paced YA novel that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Written in a voice that felt familiar, it blended romance, character development, and place in a way that easily transported me to Tanner Texas.

In Sorboni Banerjee's Hide With Me, I experienced a breathtaking snapshot of a life. No, I won't even call it an adventure, because that term indicates something fantastic or unrealistic - and Hide With Me felt anything but. Hide With me is the most realistic, gritty, and excitingly suspenseful YA book I have read in a while.

When Cade discovers a dying girl on his farm, he dubs her Jane Doe and hides her in his barn, nursing her back to health and keeping her safe from the gang trouble she's gotten herself tangled up in. Banerjee carefully crafts her characters' personalities with witty dialogue and layers upon layers of heartbreaking relatable experiences, including those of abuse victims, immigrants, and people who have become all-too-familiar with "the system." The romance at the center of the plot is a forbidden-feeling slow burn, in which friends become more-than-friends and boundaries are respected until the absolute last second - I found myself wondering "how will they get away with this?" more than once!

The heart-pounding action of this book will keep you on your seat all the way through, and fans of Breaking Bad will appreciate the crime intrigue and hot Texas summer setting. Hide With Me gave me a fun, invigorating experience I won't soon forget.

Banerjee's debut novel is a suspense that depicts just how difficult it is to run from your past. Cade finds a girl in his family's cornfield and immediately does what he can to help her at the risk of being caught by his abusive, drunk father. As Jane Doe heals, she must come to terms that the bad crowd she found herself mixed in with are after her and the longer she stays with Cade, the more at risk he is of getting hurt too. Both Cade and Jane want a new start, but it's impossible for them to move forward until they come to terms with the lives they have. Working together may put Cade in more danger, but he's not going to let Jane fight her battles alone. Banerjee's story had me hooked from the very beginning. I tried to guess what was happening along the way, but she was able to write in a way that kept me second guessing myself until the truth was revealed. I was gifted this book from Razorbill Publishing.

It’s been a long time since I have sped through a teenage love novel, but I finished this action- packed story in just about two days. It was hard to put down, as it felt like there was always another surprise waiting for me around the corner.

Sorboni Banerjee brilliantly weaves three different voices into one complex, but easy-to-follow storyline. It was engaging and unpredictable. I somehow felt compassion for both the protagonists and antagonists.

Highly recommend this novel, for both teens and adults.

A good read with a fast moving pace after the first quarter of the book. The story about Jane, Kade, the Mexican cartel, and some other interesting characters in a small town of Tranyor, TX is believable and engaging. The descriptions of the cartel violence is stomach churning (at least for me), perhaps it was meant for realistic effect. Banerjee's description and narration made it seem like I was reading a potential movie script. I could imagine and create the scenes very vividly. Nice quick read.

This book is perfect for YA and delves into some topics which are relevant to that age group.
I appreciated meeting the author and her coming to meet students in the book club. (It would be awesome to have q/a at the end of the book to generate/spur meaningful conversation.)
I really appreciated the how the author rotated the narrative voice amongst characters to highlight, in a chronological manner, how they were dealing with what was happening.
As I read the book, I felt like I was there and could feel what they were feeling.

Fast-paced, edgy, and unlike any upper YA thriller I've ever read. The chapters were James Patterson short and the plot fast-paced, but the writing itself did not suffer in the least. Each chapter held little pockets of literary mastery. Juicy morsels I wanted to enjoy. I devoured the book in giant bites, because the plot was so fast and so breathtaking, but I am going to re-read it for those bites of prose that simply need to be savored. This is a must-read.

Fast paced but the themes and setting are too heavy for YA I think. And while the ending was satisfying it was unrealistic and a dangerous message to send teenagers!

I enjoyed this book a lot. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because each chapter alternated between Cade, Jane, and Lobenzo, the villain. I had difficulty distinguishing between the voices of Jane and Cade and had to keep checking the beginning of the chapter to see who was talking. Maybe it's just me having troubles. Still, I liked the book a lot. Kept my interest all the way through.

Entertaining and fast paced read.

This is not a genre that I normally read, but I was completely hooked from the start. The author's use of alternating perspectives is unique (at least to me) and helped create a great flow throughout the novel. It also created the suspense that kept me hooked.

Definitely adding to my class library.

Set in a Texas border town and told in multiple POVs.

I can see my students really getting into the book because there seem to be cliffhangers at the end of many of the chapters that make you keep on reading.
