Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and Nobel Prize laureate in 1929, known for his series of highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas, noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories, as well as the ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann, and three of his six children, Erika Mann, Klaus Mann and Golo Mann, also became important German writers. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939, he emigrated to the United States, from where he returned to Switzerland in 1952. Thomas Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur.

Commento il primo volume e dovrei dire che lo faccio per fissare le prime impressioni, ma non sono sicura che sia vero, forse il vero motivo è che non sono sicura di terminare il secondo, come molti anni fa, quando mi sono fermata all’inizio del seguente. Eppure il primo l’avevo seguito senza fatica, non so se con piacere, piacere è un termine che forse non si addice a questa lettura, ma certo con molto interesse. Il perdersi di Hans nei meandri misteriosi eppure seducenti della malattia mi aveva e mi ha ancora attratta. Seguire un giovane sano addentrarsi in una casa di morte, seppure ovattata e sontuosa, per di più immersa in un luogo, la montagna, dove più che in qualsiasi altro si respira l’illusione della immortalità e della persistenza, era ed è un bell’addentrarsi nelle paure dell’esistenza. In verità le montagne svizzere e la loro luce sono abbastanza incolori e sbiadite, qui, rimangono sullo sfondo; a dominare è l’interno del Behrens, il sanatorio per gente facoltosa di tutta Europa, con le sue terrazze per la cura del sole e dell’aria, i locali comuni dove si consumano banchetti infiniti e si incrociano gli sguardi . Hans ci entra per una breve vacanza e ne subisce tutto quanto il fascino, della natura, della dissoluzione del tempo, della resa al luogo, della quiete, dei ritmi monotoni, del distacco dalla vita concreta e senza senso della pianura. Del distacco dalla vita in fondo e della forza di attrazione del pensiero, del nulla, della morte. E di una donna, che in realtà è il ricordo del suo primo amore, un compagno di scuola con gli occhi da kirghiso. Comincia a chiedersi dove comincia la vita, prende a studiare anatomia, biologia, si avvicina ai malati terminali, trasgredendo una delle regole della casa secondo la quale la morte deve essere nascosta. Ascolta ma non condivide le idee di Settembrini, il letterato positivista che nega la malattia, la disprezza; ascolta le lezioni del terapeuta freudiano che afferma che la malattia è effetto della repressione. La sua ricerca si aggira sul senso della vita dell’amore della morte. I grandi temi dell’esistenza, le angosce che ognuno nel suo piccolo ha affrontato o anche solo sfiorato durante la giovinezza e che poi sono riemerse come isole dal fondo del mare più in là, quando gli anni si fanno più pesanti. Più che pensieri giovanili, però, sono riflessioni senili quelle che fa Hans, giovane solo per finta, nella trasposizione letteraria, che si ritira dal mondo. Giovane è Gioachino, il cugino malato più gravemente, che scalpita per tornare nella vita reale, che non si rassegna all’inattività forzata.

Thomas Mann on selle romaaniga leiutanud ajamasina. Mitte sellise, millega ajas edasi või tagasi liikuda, vaid sellise, millega aega pikemaks venitada. Alustuseks räägib ta sellest, kuidas aeg kulgeb mägisanatooriumis teisiti kui “pärismaailmas”. Ja siis läheb raamat edasi nii, et teksti kulg tekitab minus kui lugejas sama tunde - sündmuste korrapärasus ja monotoonsus tähendab, et pisiasjad omandavad ebaproportsionaalse tähtsuse, enne- või pärastlõunase mõtiskluse lahtikerimine tundub lõputu, kõiges on, mida analüüsida pikemalt. This reader was thinking that the mesmerizing Thomas Mann has anticipated the findings from the quintessential Flow by the co-founder of Positive Psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and the other fundamental Magnum opus, Influence by Robert Cialdini http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/05/i...



Once Hans Castorp reaches the extraordinary climate of the Magic Mountain, where he is supposed to visit a patient, his cousin Joachim Ziemssen, the hero becomes overwhelmed by the climate and he is Influenced by the other residents, according to one of the Six Principles listed by Robert Cialdini, that of Social Proof.

Thomas Mann has been elusive in regards to the interpretation of his Bildungsroman and compared it to a ‘symphonic work with a number of themes’ and then he recommended that we read the book twice which is what the under signed just did, without being clear, he must confess, on what is the right angle…



I mean I still see The Magic Mountain as symbolizing an elevation, the aspiration of man, woman and they (as in the new groups we need to address, transgender, non-binary, and there is a new term hear a few days ago, called two spirits) to be on Top, the Mountain as erudition, the sophisticated, erudite character that ascends, transgressing to a new dimension, on Top of the World figuratively and literally…

On the other hand, the fact that Hans Castorp is influenced by the attitude of the rest of the people who now live almost permanently at The Berghof sanatorium in Davos, he ends up copying them, and he becomes a patient, giving up the initial plan of leaving after a three weeks visit is proof of a failure…



It seems that the stay on the Magic Mountain is not desirable and represents in fact an abdication, a distraction from the duties of the flatlands and eventually of life itself…the mentor Lodovico Settembrini prompts Hans Castorp to take flight as soon as possible, before the lethargy, habits of the sanatorium become pervasive and there would be no way for the hero to be able to escape this curse, or Evil Magic…

Then there is the issue of time, which made me think of Flow, the Optimal State where time is also altered, in that when we have experiences of maximum bliss, time both dilates and compresses, depending on circumstances…

We could also say that the main reason for the decision made by the main character to stay in Davos, at the Berghof Sanatorium is that he falls in love with Madame Clavdia Chauchat (the one he only calls by her first name, even when she says that she is appalled at his daring and familiarity) though he could be in a different situation…



When he was a child, Hans Castorp has been infatuated with another boy – and here we have one of the connections with Death in Venice, wherein Gustav von Aschenbach is attracted by Tadzio, and indeed, Thomas Mann has said that he originally planned The Magic Mountain as a satirical follow-up to Death in Venice, with the ‘mixture of death and amusement’ that the author had encountered when visiting his wife in a Swiss sanatorium http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/01/d...

"Can one tell – that is to say, narrate – time, time itself, as such, for its own sake?" and The Magic Mountain is special in this way too, for those who are residents in the Berghof have different notions about time, three weeks do not exist as a measure there, where people think in terms of years, months



There is also the issue of doing the same thing every day and the paradox of needing good habits, the rituals of exercising (getting into physical training benefits both the body and the mind, for the brain releases the perfect cocktail of endorphins, adrenaline, at the exact time, in the perfect combination) reading, cleaning, communicating and taking care of our relationships with family and friends (incidentally, the happiest people have excellent bonds with those) and on the other hand, there is the problem of boredom.

As Thomas Mann writes, doing the same thing every single day, like the patients on the Magic Mountain, who have to eat at the same hours, five times per day, take their rest, measure their temperatures, will reduce all these days to the same single unit, they will all compress to become One…



When Hans Castorp sees Clavdia Chauchat, he seems to have resuscitated his affection (was it love? There is a short story by the same glorious Thomas Mann, in which a personage is very reluctant to use the word, estimating that there is no feeling in real life, outside literature, art, to match the immense power of the word) for the boy he had met in school, who had given him a crayon, whose shavings he still keeps…

There are many dazzling characters and the most interesting after Hans Castorp might be Lodovico Settembrini, the one who pleads for humanism, enlightenment and who encourages the hero to abandon the toxic atmosphere (again, like time, it is all relative, from some angles, the Mountain is an elevation of the spirit, but it can also be the place when people become idle, they suffocate in all that pure air)



The antagonist of Settembrini is the dark Jesuit Naphta and the two will eventually clash both spiritually and physically, but while the intellectual polemic is clearly desirable, we know this from Socrates, who used dialectical dialogue, putting into the arena opposite concepts to use where truth lies, the material conflict will have dire consequences…

Por fin!!!! Veia lejos el final del libro, super incomodo de leer, la narrativa un asco, casi sacando el vol. II del challenge.

-Me dieron Hans Castorp por un tubo y 7 llaves
-Demasiada vueltas para que al final Castorp este enfermo por 'amor'
-....mucha vuelta...

Libro raro como poucos, que foi de menos a máis até me rematar gustando bastante. Veremos no segundo volume despois de dar-lle un-a pausinha para ler outras cousas.

Raamat noore mehe elufilosoofia leidmisest ning 1900-ndate alguse Euroopa jõuka keskklassi laiadest rahalistest võimalustest.
Šveitsis Davose mägikuurordis on 20. sajandi alguses kogunenud väga kirju seltskond - seal on kopsukliiniku patsiente nii Saksamaalt, Hollandist, Itaaliast, Rootsist, aga päris palju ka Venemaalt. Ja venelaste puhul on huvitav autori määratles - on "head" venelased ja "halvad" venelased. Ehk seal oli heade venelaste laud ja halbade venelaste laud. Viidati nende erinevustele just kommete osas. Halvad venelased käitusid robustsemalt.

Lisaks peategelasele Hans Castorpile oli seal väga huvitav tegelaskuju itaallasest humanitaar Settebrini, kes pidas mitmeid pikemaid loenguid Hans Castorpile ja keda Castorp seetõttu ka austas. Kuigi ta alati polnud Settebrini seisukohtadega nõus. Igal juhul Settebrini sai aru meie praeguse maailma ja ühiskonna probleemsetest kohtadest ning seetõttu teda sütitas idee, et kirjutada raamat või entsüklopeedia erinevatest piinadest ja hädadest, mis inimkonnale on osaks saanud, et siis neid edaspidi vältida. Selles osas oli ta käinud isegi erinevatel kongressidel ja üks selts oli ellu kutsutud selle rolli täitmiseks.

Castorp läks esialgu Davosesse vaid oma tädipoja Joachimit külastama, aga sinna jõudes sai ta tõenäoliselt mingisuguse nakkuse, nii et ta vaikselt hakkas ise ka seal haigeks jääma. Lisaks oli selge, et ta ka soovis sinna jääda ja seetõttu ka sisuliselt kutsus ellu oma tervisehäda.

Inimestel, patsientidel, oli seal ju mugav elu - sai kolm korda päevas korralikult süüa - söögikorrad olid ka kõik mitmekäigulised, samuti olid seal lamamistunnid ette nähtud ja jalutamistunnid. Samuti tähistati seal suurejooneliselt erinevaid kalendritähtpäevi. Igal juhul võisid kliiniku omanikud sellise korraldusega rahul olla, sest patsiendid pidid sealviibimise eest küllalt korralikku tasu maksma. Ja see tekitas minu hinnangul kohe ka eetilise dilemma, millest raamatus otseselt küll juttu ei olnud, veidi ehk kaudselt. Nimelt oli peaarst Behrensi huvides ka see, et inimesed võimalikult kaua seal viibiksid. Nii pani ta küllalt kergekäeliselt inimestele diagnoosi, et sina pead olema veel siin 3 kuud või 4 kuud - enne seda kodumineku võimalust küll ei ole. Samuti näis problemaatilisena tolleaegne ravimeetod, kus inimesel sisuliselt kopsu sisse auk tehti, et tal siis õhk teistmoodi läbi käiks. Selliselt oli ravitud just mitmeid nooremaid patsiente. Samas on raske tolle ajastu haigustesse ja ravivõimalustesse nüüd tagantjärele ka hinnanguid anda. Igal juhul mitmeid noori suri seal haiglas ära, alla 30-aastaseid inimesi, mille puhul näis, et poleks nad seal haiglas pidanud nii kaua olema ja sellist ravi saama, siis oleksid nende ellujäämisvõimalused olnud paremad.

Castorpi enda jaoks oli huvitav abielunaine Chauchat, kes oli vene päritoluga ja meenutas Castorpile ühte oma lapsepõlve koolikaaslast, kes talle meeldis. Igal juhul oli autor selles mõttes huvitavas võtmes avanud selle meeldivuse liini. Läbi poisi kujundi.

Castorp ise oli sisuliselt orvuna üles kasvanud, olles kasvatatud vanaonu poolt ning pidi hakkama karjääri tegema vanaonu laevaehitusfirmas Hamburgis. Selles mõttes oli ka huvitav näide, et kuidas väga praktilisest maailmast, keskkonnast pärit noormees hakkas järk-järgult mõtlema sisuliselt ebapraktiliste teemade peale. See oli selles mõttes selline elufilosoofia leidmise lugu.

Ja see, et talle proua Chaucat pärast nii pikka platoonilist meeldimist nii tugevalt südamesse lõpuks läks, see oli huvitav ja kaasahaarav armulugu. 1. osa jäi selles osas küll veel pooleli.

Kokkuvõttes, miks ei saanud raamatule viite punkti anda, vaid andsin neli punkti viiest, oli põhjus, et see oli kohati veidi lohisev. Thomas Manni kirjutamisstiil on küll väga oskuslik ning erinevate nurkade all avatud filosoofiad olid kohati huvitavad ja äratundmist tekitavad, kuid sageli tundus teemade kordumist. Ja veidi liiga palju oli kopsukliinikus toimuva igapäevaelu kirjeldamist, mis läks veidi sellise meelelahutuskirjanduse žanri alla. Ehk veidi liiga palju oli erinevaid tegelasi, kelle kirjeldamisega päris palju vaeva nähti, mis samas tegi raamatu liiga mahukaks ja kohati venivaks.

P.S. Raamatut hakkasin lugema seetõttu, et Hardo Pajula ütles mitmes intervjuus, et see oli tema jaoks väga oluline raamat 1997. - 1998. aastal. Kuna Pajula filosoofilised eneseotsingud on teiste autorite Eesti lugejateni toomised on olnud huvitavad, siis mõtlesin, et ju siis midagi peab selles raamatus ikka olema. See raamat oli küll ühelt poolt huvitav, aga minu eluetapis ei andnud see mulle tõenäoliselt nii palju väärtust.

Raske on "Võlumäge" lühidalt kokku võtta. Selleks on ta liiga tihke ja tummine. Lihtsustades on tegemist romaaniga ajast ja maailmasõja eelsest Euroopast, aga see ei ütle ka päris kõike ära. Toeka 800 lehe hulka pikib Mann veel hulganiselt muid mõtisklusi, mis käsitlevad nii surma kui ka elu, armastust ja üksildust.

Selle kõige seedimine oli paras väljakutse, kuna tempo oli kohati pea olematu ja lõputud kirjeldused sanatooriumist ja nende elanikest ähvardasid hinge matta. Pärast esimese köite lõpetamist liikusin teise kallale pigem tahtejõu najal, aga pärast raamatu sulgemist valdas mind küll ebamäärane rahulolu, mis andis tunnistust tõsiasjast, et lugemisele kulunud aeg polnud mitte raisku läinud.

Nõnda sai teine köide ka kõrgema hinnangu, kuna viimase saja lehe jooksul hakkasid asjad paika loksuma ja teose geniaalsus hakkas vaikselt välja immitsema. Retrospektiivselt kerkis selle läbi ka esimese köite hinnang ja kokkuvõttes võis loetuga rahule jääda küll. Soovitada julgen siiski vaid nendele, kellel on üle nii aega kui ka kannatust.
