From the creator of My Life as a Teenage Robot comes the epic finale to the middle-grade horror series about a horrible bag, the spine-chilling world hidden within it, and a terrifying adventure into the world of GrahBhag. Perfect for fans of Coraline, the Spiderwick Chronicles, and Small Spaces.
They entered the horrible bag… They survived the twisted tower… But can they escape the cursed cloak?
Zenith Maelstrom is running out of time. It’s only been a month on Earth since he was ejected from the macabre world of GrahBhag, with his sister Apogee and best friend Kevin still trapped inside, but in GrahBhag, years are passing. And with the horrible bag out of reach, Zenith has no way to get back to save them.
That is, until a new portal opens up and provides him passage back to GrahBhag. Once there, he learns that things are more dire than he thought, as the literal fabric of the terrifying world has begun to rip at the seams. If Zenith has any chance to save his sister—and maybe even GrahBhag in the process—he’ll have to dive deeper into the secrets of this terrible world than he ever has before. For the Wraith is haunting, and time is not on his side…
With a combination of dry, absurdist humor and no-holds-barred horror, Rob Renzetti has crafted a delightfully imaginative fantasy world that will hook readers as surely as it will send chills down their spines.
Ever since Zenith was found again on Earth after going missing with his sister Apogee and friend Kevin, his life has been full of questions. His parents, police, and his therapist are trying to figure out what happened to Zenith, and where Apogee and Kevin are. But how can he explain everything he went through with The Horrible Bag in GrahBhag? If he explains, everyone will think he is crazy, and then he will have no chance of rescuing his sister and friend. So Zenith keeps quiet, pretending he doesn't remember anything about how he went missing, and where Apogee and Kevin are. When his therapist finds his journal with details on his ordeals in GrahBhag, Zenith pretends that the journal recounted his dreams. But one day, when waiting to be picked up from his therapist appointment, Zenith notices a portal open up that could allow him to enter back into GrahBhag! Zenith finally has a chance to save Apogee and Kevin, but is he willing to step back into the awful world of GrahBhag?
Opinion: Overall, I really enjoyed this book. This book is the 3rd in a series, and despite not having read the first two books in the series, I was able to understand the plot and characters within the first few pages. There were a few minor details that I felt confused about at the beginning due to this, but the main plot of the book can be understood without having read the earlier books in the series. The author did a great job of leaning into the fantasy element of the story and used very specific descriptive language when describing the nonhuman characters and new landscapes. The author painted a picture of the different non-human characters by describing their color, skin, and what they looked like. This helped me visualize what Zenith was going through and made the story seem more adventurous. I also really liked how the book was very fast-paced, and there were no parts of the story that felt boring or slow. The character of Zenith was also very relatable. Just like most children, he was nervous to go back into a scary world, but was willing to do it for the people he loved. He was brave and witty, but also had things he was unsure about, and felt like a regular human and not a superhero. Overall, I think this book is great for readers who like fantasy and adventure.
