The Crinoline Academy #2

The Marriage Method

Rate this book
The Academy always comes first . . . which makes marriage to its most formidable adversary an exceedingly inconvenient arrangement.

Well removed from London’s more curious eyes, the Benevolent Academy for the Betterment of Young Ladies strives toward one clandestine to distract, disrupt, and discredit men in power who would seek to harm the advancement of women—by appropriate means, of course.

When intrepid newspaper editor Miles Quincy starts to question the school’s intentions, the Academy appoints Penelope “Nell” Trewlove, one of their brightest graduates, to put this nuisance to rest. An easy enough mission, she supposes. Or it would be, if Miles wasn’t so fascinating—too fascinating to resist—and if Nell’s visit to London didn’t perfectly coincide with the murder of one of Miles’s reporters.

When the inexorable claws of fate trap Nell and Miles in a compromising situation, they agree to an arrangement that will save their reputations while enabling them to investigate the story that led to a man’s death, as well as the surprising chemistry between them . . .

I loved this so much.

This is turning out to be my very favourite series from Mimi. It’s got mystery, intrigue, friendship and so much angst. And I don’t know how she manages to make a closed door romance so sexy, but she does. Can’t wait for the next one.

Yay, got the arc!

I haven’t read anything in a month though, will this break my slump? 😭

Mimi, you absolute QUEEN!

I knew I would love this and I was right. Marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes, and when it’s written by Mimi Matthews, it’s a guaranteed success.

Miles and Nell are caught in a compromising situation when a cat gets stuck in Nell’s crinoline and Miles tries to help. Since it’s 1864, they have no choice but to marry. While discussing their fate, Miles realizes that a package he received contains the tongue of his missing reporter.

So, a romance AND a murder mystery. 😋

I love all Mimi’s books, including her earliest work, but you can really see her growth here. The Marriage Method seems bolder than her other books (that door is cracking open!), but I also loved its depth and nuance.

The characters are complex and mature, and the story beautifully combines romance and mystery. There’s adventure that makes you hold your breath, and a moment later, achingly sweet romance and chemistry that will melt you into a puddle.

I loved the independent, feisty heroine who knew her worth, and the slightly grumpy, reserved, but utterly charming hero who was, to use his own words, mad for her. 😏 I loved their friendship and partnership, their slow-burn romance, and the honest, healthy communication.

The Crinoline Academy series is becoming one of my all-time favorites, and I can’t wait for the next installment. This book can be read as a standalone, but you don’t want to miss the delight that is Rules for Ruin.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I do so enjoy Mimi Matthews writing! This is a pretty even blend of mystery and romance and I might have enjoyed it if there was a tiny bit more romance. Definitely looking forward to the next book!

What’s to love…
- marriage of convenience
- Grade A tension and longing
- FMC that uses a mobility aid (cane)
- communication + drama-free romance (the conflict comes in the form of the mystery!)
- CAT DAD MMC
- mystery plot

What might not work for some…
- I wanted a bit more of the romance, it’s so good but the mystery element overshadows it, just a touch.

Spice: The tiniest crack of peeked door. Most will probably consider this closed door, honestly I consider this closed door. You’re in the room and you know what happened, but you don’t get any details.

Such a great sequel to Rules for Ruin.

I am LOVING this series. The regency era mixed with FMCs who are veritable badasses and the MMCs who support them is just fire.

Nell was a great FMC. Very adept and intelligent but with such a wonderful vulnerability that made her such a dynamic character. And Miles. So good. It's always fun to see an MMC who is very protective but has to balance that with being supportive and standing WITH their ladies, not in front.

Couldn't recommend this series enough, and I can't wait to see what comes next 💗

Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for this arc in exchange for an honest review!

but of course it's 5 stars. can Mimi do anything less? simply phenomenal.

Matthews has once again crafted a love story with originality and heart, one that I stayed up until 2 am to finish (this is insanity for me). Forced marriage is one my my favorite tropes, and Miles and Nell's strong personalities make it even more of a delight. Despite the initial comedy of their meeting, they deal with several unsavory elements and the grittier setting and themes provide a fresh and dynamic direction for them. I already want to reread it.

p.s. I'm sure Gemma is the heroine of #3 and I'm hoping her love interest is the Inspector
p.p.s. She cracked the door open on this one and I nearly died of shock

This light, pacey historical romance turned out a bit darker than I expected. Though Rules for Ruin set up the grungier gaslamp tone by giving us a romance between a blackmailer and a betting shop owner, this one felt a shade darker because the romantic pair (a schoolteacher and newspaper editor) is investigating human trafficking of minors. I’m very aware of what a huge problem this was in Victorian England, so I wasn’t shocked, and I think it’s important to understand the 19th c was no moral Golden Age. There’s nothing graphic in the depiction here, it happens off stage, but there’s a bit of sleuthing at brothels, and quite a bit of unsavoury people drooling over the FMC (no SA, but she does get punched).

I was expecting this to be more closed-door, but that’s probably on me for not double checking (all of the Mimi Matthews books I’ve read so far have been closed door). This is a sweet slowburn marriage of convenience, so the (married) bedroom scene is more focused on emotions than physical details, but it’s very much a fogged-up window effect rather than closed door, for those who want to know these things.

Enjoyed the nod to Trollope! And just like in Rules for Ruin, I liked the journey the characters go through together to get to a place of trust and vulnerability, not just physical passion. Oh, and the disability representation felt really well handled to me. The heroine gets around, but she is occasionally limited by it and has to work harder than others to do the same things.

Another thing that’s great about Matthews is that she actually knows what her characters should be eating, wearing, and driving at any given moment, in any given era she writes in. I do not take that for granted!

I hope she gets to write the story of Miss Sparrow and the policeman next!

I like to thank the publisher and NetGalley ... no, wait, wanna thank Mimi since I always get denied. (Thanks Mimi.)

I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK.

It felt shorter, or it was just so enjoyable time was flying right by. But, ugh. The feelings. We all want a man like Miles. Miles is book-smart, handsome enough, tall, broad shouldered, and absolutely smitten with his 50 second fiancee, Nell. The moment she starts surprising him, telling little tells about what she can do and how she can protect herself, he is sitting there blinking (insert Sword in the Stone blinking gif) and then falling in love. He would do anything for her, procure any documents, allow her to fight any fight, charm (within reason) any man to get what she wants.

In my last review I said how I missed seeing ladies get physical hand-to-hand combat. Mimi gave it to me. We had parasols handled like fencing foil, fists thrown, and guns. It was fun, it was bloody, some shoulders got popped out of socket and popped back in. There were tender moments of lingering glances, touch, and even a fade to black intimacy scene. It was all just perfect.

We also get something new: Mimi showing that she can write a mystery with a male and female lead. Miles and Nell are absolutely perfect and complement one another. Each lending whatever bit of expertise to the situation.

We got to see some familiar faces, and some new faces! Our red haired lady sounds like fire and the kind who hangs around with the men and drinks (she also seems to get into brawls or prefers combat). There is also a girl who shows up that is fairly young - 14, I believe. I'd actually love to see Mimi write a YA romance.

As for conflict? Would you believe there is nothing between these two? They get in a small squabble that gets cleared up but it was a misunderstanding. It's nice to have adults that talk it out. And... have cats (several) as referees or mediators for feelings.

Mimi can do anything. Thank you, Mimi, for your kindness and your trust in me as a reader.

Marriage of necessity (honestly the reason why they have to marry is kind of hilarious; it involves a cat and some underskirts 😂). She has a disability from a fall. He is a bit of a grump but is a complete goner for her fairly early on which is always fun.

There is the mystery of what the school actually does which is becoming a well worn trope and whilst I enjoyed this in my exploration back into HF, I didn't enjoy it enough to read anything else in the series.

Low steam - it's there but its mild.

I was unable to put this book down. From the completely swoony romance with so much heart to it, to the mystery going on, it was impossible to stop my reading. And as if it was not enough, there are cats everywhere in this book and Mr.Léo and I were absolute fans of that! (Cat daddies are the best if you ask me, and Miles' love of cats was heart-melting.)

Right from the start I was captivated. Our characters' first interaction was chef's kiss. The way everything happened had me kicking my feet and giggling. I love a good forced marriage trope and this one was done oh so well. Nell really tried to find another way to solve things but in the end it was the better option, and it made for such a great development in our characters' relationship.

While the romance part of the story makes you feel all mushy and happy, there is definitely a darker side to this story, and it kept things fascinating. It added a thrilling side to it all, and I did enjoy seeing Miles getting so protective of Nell. I loved even more how our sweet Nell was so bold in her attempts to solve all that was happening. She's a marvellous character and had also a vulnerable side that made her character's growth super satisfying. The women in this series are so intrepid and likeable, and even if I like a good protective hero, I love it even more when matched to a woman who's able to fight for herself and won't be belittled. Nell definitely made me proud.

Let me also say that our two main characters were so adorable together. They TALKED and worked together. Can you believe it? They were paying attention to the other, and listening, and it was fantastic. Such an unproblematic couple it was just the best to follow them.

Mimi Matthews' stories are closed-door which can honestly be refreshing in historical romances. That being said, it doesn't mean you do not get all the tension between the characters, believe me, it's all there. You can feel the attraction in the air, charged moments with a simple touch that makes you feel so many things, exchanges and glances with such longing. So yes, many butterflies moments in there and such beautiful scenes with a tenderness that brings comfort and happiness. It is always a delight to read.

It's such a pleasure to hear mentions of previous characters and see them back, and I love how The Belles of London is all linked with this series!

Huge thanks to Berkley, Netgalley and the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

Mimi Matthews did it again. I feel like closed-door historical romance is so hard to find, and it’s comforting to know I can always count on this author to deliver.

The Marriage Method is set in the Victorian era, as the MCs try to solve a mystery involving the editor MMC’s missing gossip columnist and the schoolteacher FMC’s missing pupil. The romance is perfect and sweet. The mystery is exciting and keeps you on your toes.

I loved that the couple gets together at the beginning of the book and that there’s no third act breakup. ❤️

I enjoyed this, though less than I was hoping to. I have been pondering on why and I honestly think it had to do with the body part in the mail early in the book. It set up my apprehensive 'Ewww' factor (which is admittedly high because I'm very sensitive). I did love the Bleak House undertones, the mention of Trollope, and Miles and Nell. Miles and Nell are so sweet and so well developed. I love how their emotional intimacy develops. They're both such lonely characters to start, even though Nell has the Academy. I think I would have liked to see a little more of the Academy in this, though I know the whole point is that Nell was forced out of it. I love how Nell's Academy training comes into the story. I look forward to Book 3!

Forced into a reputation-saving arrangement, they investigate the crime…and the undeniable pull between them.

MY LATEST OBESSION.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM || TIKTOK

Oh this EASILY is now in my top five favorite book from Mimi Matthews. I was OBESSED from the first chapter. I don’t think anyone does marriage of convenience romances better. I will be unable to think of anything else for the foreseeable future.

Miles. Miles. Miles. I could have highlighted half of this book just listening to him talk. The man was so far gone and all sorts of protective and could not be a step away from Nell and I LOVED IT ALL. And I loved Nell too. I loved seeing her find her strength and inner fire from having to be away from the academy. Miles helped her genuinely blossom and grow and I loved the way they played off of each other.

Matthews also writes some of the best romantic scenes everrrrr. The way emotion and love is conveyed through every moment. It’s heated and sensual and lights my kindle on fire every time.

I loved the suspense elements and mystery. The plot is engaging and balanced just right. It’s a book worth devouring.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: vague fade to black
- Violence: moderate
- Content warnings: kidnapping, murder, attempted murder, physical and weapons based altercations, near death experiences

Intrepid heroines dispatching ruffians is something I didn't know I was hungry for in histroms.

When Penelope Trewlove visits Miles Quincey, the editor in chief of London Courant, to dissuade him from inquiring into the secret activities of a charity school for girls, feline magic conspires to force Nell and Miles into a compromising position. What began as a marriage of convenience soon grows into genuine friendship, deep love, and an everlasting bond. Set against a bustling Victorian backdrop, The Marriage Method blends thrilling perils and fiery passion, rendering it a must-read for every historical romance lover.

In each installment of The Crinoline Academy, a female protagonist is tasked with tearing down the walls of patriarchy one powerful man at a time. In The Marriage Method, an eminently resourceful Nell shines while battling injustice and rebelling against societal norms which exploit and oppress women. Despite serious injuries, Nell’s spirit remains undeterred. From wielding a walking stick to throwing punches, Nell sparks like fireworks. And when she has moments of self-doubt and vulnerability, she is loved desperately by my dream hero, Miles.

Seriously, methodical Miles is bound to sweep you off your feet! He reminds me of Tom Finchley, who’s my FAVORITE Mimi Matthews hero. A creature of order and method and a diligent investigative reporter, Miles doesn’t back down from falling first and admitting his feelings. He is not only a fierce cat dad, but also an unrepentant wife guy! Miles thought cats were his sole weakness; but then he met Nell. One of my favorite things about the heroes in this series is that they serve as allies to these remarkable heroines, rather than their saviors. I loved seeing Miles grapple with his desire to protect Nell and defer to her resourcefulness.

“For a man so fond of cats, he did sometimes bear a striking similarity to a dog with a bone.”

In a quest to solve a murder and the disappearance of a young girl, Nell and Miles navigate through dangerous neighborhoods of London, infiltrate brothels, even attend a house party incognito. Furthermore, the novel sheds light on how Victorian brothelkeepers entrapped unsuspecting young girls. The darker themes offer readers a glimpse into the insidiousness of conservative and patriarchal Victorian society.

However, the romance between Nell and Miles had me completely enraptured. I LOVED IT! And that’s an understatement. Infused with aching tenderness and sweetness, the romance evokes emotions of longing and love. One of Mimi Matthews’s extraordinary gifts as a writer is to make her readers experience the weight of a glance, the touch of bare fingers, or just skirts brushing against trousers. In The Marriage Method, the bedroom door is enticingly cracked open . . .!!! Believe me when I tell you that I was not prepared.

Me:

I’m now awaiting Gemma and Garrick’s book with great anticipation.

Also, Shadow the cat, you the real MVP! 😹

Another richly detailed historical tapestry of mystery and romance! Also, I nearly screamed when I got my arc approval! 🤩🤩

(Quick note for my fellow closed-door girlies, there’s a vague open door scene—I’ve got all the content details below 👇🏻)

While there’s something different about this story compared to Matthews’ other works, the immersive research drew me right into the pages! I absolutely adore Nell and Miles! Their marriage of convenience started rather comically in my opinion, and the way they grow together & as individuals was very sweet. The way they soften each other? Precious. The feminist undertones were stronger in this one, but the partnership & development of the characters as a couple were solid. Also, the cats. 😂

Romance aside, mystery & murder play heavily into this installment. It’s not super gory or graphic (if you’ve read Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, or Mary Stewart, you’ll be fine), but it’s definitely twisty with a bit of heaviness due to the topic matter (brothels kidnapping and trafficking girls). I didn’t guess the bad guys, but I don’t think I was supposed to, haha. Besides, I loved the *journey* to get there!

Okay, now for thoughts on the vague open door scene. I was surprised to find it here, since Mimi’s not given more than fade-to-black in the past. HOWEVER. It’s vague. Like incredibly vague, and solely emotionally focused. It’s kind of a fade to black physically (clothing removal) that turns into Nell’s inner emotional feelings during the actual act (no real physical description or body parts) that cuts to an “after” scene. Its focus is around Nell’s fear of her injury making her undesirable & her feeling of finally belonging to someone after not being wanted. Personally, I do wish we could have gotten the emotional resolution from the before and after without actually still being there in the in-between, but I do love the emotional triumph Nell made during that scene. Honestly, it was tamer (less physical) than the wedding night scene in Divine Rivals. Take from that what you will.

That part aside, I loved the book and read it in an afternoon! If you want closed-door modifications, simply skip the first half of Chapter 31 to the scene break, which is the “afterwards” moment or skip the entire chapter. You might lose some of Nell’s emotional arc since that’s essentially what the scene’s focus is, but it’s possible to do.

We’ve already met our next heroine, and I loved getting Effie & Gabriel cameos!

*Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

The Marriage Method by Mimi Matthews is the second book in her Crinoline Academy series. This book features school teacher, Nell Trewlove and newspaper man, Miles Quincey. This is a marriage of convenience which is my all time favorite trope. Also, besides being a romance this book has a mystery. A good one too. Quite good. I love a good mystery, and with it being a romance, she has brought both worlds into a delightful read. Ms Matthews writes closed door or clean romance, but with this one, she upped the steam a bit. Some may enjoy that more, some may not.

I do look forward to her next installment in the series if she continues to write closed door books. 😊

This was a good read. It actually felt a little short. I would have enjoyed a more fleshed out mystery, but that wasn’t actually the point of the story… good characters and sinister villains made this a well-rounded read. I like a blend of genres, and Matthews is starting to make me think she could write mysteries.

The Benevolent Academy for the Betterment of Young Ladies isn’t your typical school for orphaned girls. Instead of teaching them to be quiet and proper, the Academy trains them to be independent and formidable, something their wealthy backers definitely wouldn’t approve of. When Miles Quincey, editor of the London Courant, starts digging too deep, Nell is sent to handle him. However, while in his office Nell and Miles are caught in a compromising position forcing them into a marriage of convenience.

It ends up they have common goals, as Nell was sent to find a young girl, Flora Brent, who went missing on her way to the school and Miles is investigating the disappearance of his gossip columnist. The mysteries end up intersecting, a sinister plot at the heart of both cases. I was very worried about Flora, as London was no place for an unaccompanied, young girl!

Nell and Miles’ romance was utter fun with clever banter, gradually deepening into tenderness and trust. Their empathy for one another lends the story real emotional weight, tugging at my heartstrings!

They worked well together as they looked for answers. The danger they faced was chilling, but both Nell and Miles were well equipped to handle it!

I absolutely loved The Marriage Method! It was a captivating blend of mystery and romance! And can’t forget about the adorable cats! With danger, charm, and emotional depth, this story kept me hooked from the first page to the last! Five stars all the way!

I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy courtesy of the publisher. These are my thoughts and opinions.

Definitely a must-read book! It's one of my favorites of the year, and for good reason! After reading book one, I was really happy that Nell was going to be the heroine of this second Crinoline Academy books. And what a story it is! Nell is most definitely ready to prove herself in being able to carry out missions for the academy. But she has to interact with that intrepid newspaper editor, Miles Quincy, first and get him to stop trying to sniff out a story about the Academy!

What ensues from their meeting is pure delightful chaos! Hahaha! And Nell finding herself "ruined" in the eyes of society, even though there was nothing untoward that happened. Poor Nell. But she will soon learn that Miles is one of the best gentleman and is true to his word. I loved watching everything unfold and their friendship begin and blossom. Of course that friendship doesn't begin until after their marriage, because of the "compromising" situation. I do love a good marriage of convenience trope and this one delivers! These two are just wonderful together. Honestly so sweet to have Nell's defenses come down as she learns to trust that Miles truly cares for her and isn't going to do anything to break her trust.

Add into the marriage of convenience aspect of the story a great mystery, humorous moments, some suspenseful moments (nothing crazy) and it's a well-developed story full of heart! You'll be invested in it all and not want to pause, so clear your schedules! You have been warned. Nell and Miles get to experience what it means to adjust expectations and to prepare to be surprised when life goes a different way than planned, and that it can be good and a grand adventure!

Content: Some elements of suspense, and talk of death, nothing overly graphic. There are some kisses between a married couple with mild banter. There is a scene that gets a little more detailed than I normally read, but eventually fades to black. If you are a closed door reader then I would skip chapter 31.

I received a copy from the publisher, Berkley Publishing Group, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Nell and Miles are compromised by a cat and a crinoline. To save the reputation of the school and Miles’s newspaper, they marry. Despite being strangers, there’s a palpable attraction between them. And they’re both looking for missing people: a young would-be student and a gossip columnist. Their combined search leads to the slums, brothels, and the dangerous underworld of London’s Eastend. This story has it all! Sizzling closed-door romance, mystery, danger, action, and friendship. Nell’s backstory provides excellent character development as she copes with her past and finally allows Miles to see all of her scars. Mimi Matthews delivers again!

While each novel in the Crinoline Academy features one of its students or teachers and contains its own romance and mystery situation, I recommend reading them in order to avoid spoilers regarding previous couples and cases.

Penelope (Nell) is sent to London to represent the Academy and interview with newspaper editor Miles Quincy. Quincy has taken an interest in the academy and its students after his best friend marries one of its former students. The academy holds many secrets, and Nell is determined to put Miles off. A cat, a crinoline and a bishop are about to destroy not only Miles’s reputation but Nell’s position as a teacher at the academy.

Meanwhile, Nell is looking for a missing girl who was on her way to the academy, and one of Miles’ reporters is in trouble. I absolutely loved their met cute and what occurred within the paper’s offices. Their chemistry was undeniable, even as Nell dismissed all the signs, believing Miles couldn’t possibly see beyond her disability. Not to mention, she is stubbornly independent.

The tale that unfolds held me captive, from the investigations to slow-building romance and marriage of necessity. Set in historic London, I loved spending time with these characters and catching up with out previous couple. A little heat, adorable cats and a sweet romance delivered.

Perfect for fans who love historical mysteries, witty, headstrong females trained in the art of defense and genuine heroes. I cannot wait for the next novel in Matthews Crinoline Academy series. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

This second book in the Crinoline Academy series was even better than the first for me. I really enjoyed this dual POV, marriage of convenience between one of the Academy's teachers and a newspaper man in need of a reputation boost after getting caught in a compromising situation. I loved that Miles, the MMC is a cat loving softie and that Nell, the FMC, uses a cane. There was a great mix of tenderness, action and emotional depth and the narrators did a great job too. Another satisfying Victorian historical mystery romance by Mimi Matthews!! Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy and @prhaudio for a complimentary ALC in exchange for my honest review!

Every Mimi Matthews book I read is my favorite, and THE MARRIAGE METHOD is no exception. I fell in love with Nell and Miles, and was swept away with their sweet love story set amidst the dark and alluring backdrop of Victorian London.

The Marriage Method is the second book in Mimi Matthews’s latest series, The Crinoline Academy . I loved the first book and this book more than lived up to all my expectations.

Penelope (Nell) Trewlove has spent almost the whole of her twenty-three years at the Academy, first as an orphan, then a teacher and now as deputy Headmistress. Having suffered a fall when she was young, which left her with a permanent limp, she has never ventured beyond the safety of the Academy’s gates. However, when Miles Quincy, the editor in chief of the Courant newspaper, starts snooping around, questioning the ultimate aims of the Academy, Nell knows that she must protect its secrets at all costs. For the first time in her life, she must venture beyond the safety of those gates and travel to his office in London and convince him that the Academy has no secrets to hide.

Nell has also been charged with an important mission for the Academy itself. She is to find Miss Flora Brent, who has been selected to be a suitable candidate for the Academy. Miss Brent was provided with a train ticket to travel from London but never arrived at the Academy. There are fears that she may have been abducted from the railway station.

Miles grew up in the Rookery with his single mother who was determined to see him become a respectable, educated gentleman. She paid for him to serve an apprenticeship with a printer but, while he was away, his mother died of a fever. He knew his mother had sacrificed everything for him and is determined to fulfil her dreams for him. After completing his apprenticeship, he obtained a position as a junior reporter for The Courant and, through hard work and sheer determination, he had risen to be editor in chief.

However, Miles has problems because the Courant has been losing subscribers following Miles’s series of articles exposing the treachery of a once-revered politician. The gossip column is the most lucrative but Lawrence Cowgill, the gossip columnist, has disappeared without trace. What he doesn’t need is the arrival of Nell Trewlove and an incident involving Miss Truelove’s crinoline and one of Miles’s stray cats. Unfortunately, Reverend Pettiman, one the Academy’s benefactors, witnesses them in what appears to be a compromising situation. To protect both the Academy’s and the Newspaper’s reputations, they have no alternative but to marry.

The Marriage of Convenience has always been one of my favourite tropes and the romance between Nell and Miles is heartwarming, romantic and beautifully written. I like how a genuine friendship develops between them and Ms. Matthews conveys their growing feelings for each other so well. The scene where they consummate their marriage was delicately handled and the once closed door now seems to have been left slightly ajar.

Miles has always had a reputation for being unemotional and totally devoted to the newspaper. However, when he meets Nell, he finds himself at the mercy of “unruly feelings” he has never experienced before. He admires not only her beauty but also her intelligence, courage and determination. She’s unlike any woman he’s ever met.

At first, Nell is influenced by Miles’s reputation for being cold but, as she comes to know him better, she sees a man who is honourable, a champion of truth and justice as well as a rescuer of stray cats.

This story has quite a dark tone to it, as Miles and Nell’s investigations reveal the seamier and dangerous underbelly of Victorian London. The Rookery providing a suitably atmospheric backdrop for all manner of dark deeds –murder, and kidnapping.

I like how Miles and Nell work together to solve the mystery of who kidnapped Miss Brent and murdered Lawrence Cowgill. Despite her lameness, Nell is a force to be reckoned with. She’s resourceful and the skills she learned at the academy prove invaluable. I love how protective Miles is but he always respects Nell’ abilities.

There was enough danger and suspense to keep me intrigued and I was delighted to see all the villains involved suitably dealt with.

I like how Ms. Matthews made references to characters in her other books. The attorney in Fleet Street who’s mentioned is a reference to Tom Finchley the hero of A Convenient Fiction, the 3rd book in the author’s Parish Orphans of Devon series. Nell also has her gowns made by Ahmad Malik, the hero of Siren of Sussex the first book in her Belles of London series

I enjoyed the Epilogue and I always read the Author notes because they provide some interesting background information on various aspects of the book.

My Verdict : This book combines everything you could wish for – a delightfully romantic story, unforgettable characters and an intriguing mystery. Highly recommended.

A perfect blend of romance and mystery! Our heroine Nell is content with her life as a professor at the Benevolent Academy for the Betterment of Young Ladies, the school she graduated from and the only home she has ever known. When she leaves the walls of the academy for the first time, she only intends to set the record straight with a nosy newspaper editor and spend a few days visiting fellow graduate Effie while trying to find an orphan girl who went missing during a train journey to attend the academy. However, an embarrassing incident with a foster kitten getting entangled in her crinoline means she soon finds herself stuck in a marriage of convenience with said nosy editor, Miles. Together they set out to discover if the recent disappearance of one of the paper's reporters is connected to the missing schoolgirl, and soon find themselves confronting their pasts while searching the gritty underbelly of Victorian London.

I am a big fan of Mimi Matthew's closed-door romance books, and this latest instalment did not disappoint! One of the things that I particularly enjoy is the evident historical research that she puts into each of her books. At the end of "The Marriage Method", there was an author's note detailing some of the historical facts that were the basis for various plot points. This accuracy to the time period makes me feel like I learn something with each book of hers that I read, despite it being part of the romance genre. Another aspect of her writing that I always appreciate is the representation of issues relating to race, mental health, and disability that she weaves into many of her books. In this book, Nell has a physical disability as a result of a childhood accident and uses mobility devices from time to time.

This is the second book in the Crinoline Academy series, and while I thoroughly enjoyed the cameo appearances by the hero and heroine of the first book, I definitely think "The Marriage Method" could certainly be read as a standalone or introduction into the series for someone new to Mimi Matthews. As someone who enjoys both mysteries and romances, I found this was a perfect balance of both plot arcs: a gripping mystery and equally compelling chemistry as their relationship developed. With delicious gothic-Dickensian-dark academia vibes, this would be a perfect late autumn or winter read, highly recommend!

Nell is a bright and intense woman on a mission to solve a mystery. Her disability doesn’t hinder her efforts, but an unfortunate situation changes her course, entangling her in a spontaneous relationship with Miles, who is an enemy or rival of sorts. They mesh into an immediate web of attraction after their hasty marriage of convenience, and who could write it better than Mimi Matthews? No one. And to think it all began with a cat and crinoline.

It just so happens that Miles is looking for a missing person as well, and this Victorian tale delivered a well-knit plot, with fantastic characters, CATS, and all the things to love.

Matthews writes magic, immersing me deeply into her books, and this one is saturated in danger, romance, and intrigue throughout the slums and brothels of the city. I love that Miles fell hard and fast in the midst of their adventure, but I especially love that each one is truly seen. Such a beautiful story about friendship, connection, and true love–this one is perfect for a reader who enjoys a rich and lovely tale.

⚠️While the romance in her backlist is closed-door, this one is vaguely open.

Content: mild language; mild moments of peril/danger; talk of murder; vague open door (innuendo, passionate kissing, not too graphic/explicit before the door closes)
