Earning Yancy

After my divorce last year, I just want to focus on my little girl and making a good life for us both.

There’s just one Charles Faulkner. He was just hired at my office. He’s handsome, arrogant, and can’t seem to remember my name. Unfortunately, we’re stuck working on a project together.

After a heated argument, his attitude toward me changes and sparks of a different sort begin to fly. He’s working his way past my defenses and into my heart.

It isn’t long until I see a different side of Charles, a side that I’m trying to resist, but I’ve learned the hard way that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Earning Yancy
Earning Yancy (NSFW 2) by C.C. Wood

2nd in a standalone series.  Full Length Adult Contemporary.
I love CC Wood's writing style. She blends funny, snarky, realistic, sexy and fun with great groups of girlfriends. Her novellas are always just perfect and leave nothing missing. The first in the NSFW (Not Safe For Work) series, the fun In%20Love With Lucy " target="_blank">In Love with Lucy, was a novella, but I think the rest of the series of connected standalones, including Earning%20Yancy" target="_blank">Earning Yancy, will be full length. This was the perfect kind of light vacation book I needed when I was away. But I picked it up a few times, and it just didn't grab me enough for a vacation read, so I put it down until I returned home.

When I restarted it, I still had a little trouble with the first chapter, since this series takes place in the workplace, there was a little too much about her job up front. But after that, it just kept getting better, till I was in (good) tears at the end.

Yancy is a single mom to an 18 month old with cystic fibrosis. Her dickhole ex, now a deadbeat dad, was a deadbeat even when they were together, refusing to help care for the baby. As soon as he found out that she was sick, he took off. Yancy works 2 days at home and 3 days in the office and is juggling a very busy, difficult life by herself, but she doesn't bitch, moan or cry. She just does what she needs to do, and is a wonderful mom in the process.

She has a coworker, Charles, who has been at the company a month, and he rubs Yancy wrong in a few ways, but the biggest way, is even after correcting him, he continues to call her 'Nancy'.
“Listen, Charles, my name is Yancy. Sounds like Nancy but starts with a ‘Y”, ‘Y’ as in yellow. Or how about ‘Y’ as in You’re an asshole.”

Yancy never loses her temper. But something about this guy sets her off. Her outburst, however, changed the dynamic. After they apologize, things take a different turn...
“How, in less than a week, did I go from thinking Charles was annoying to drooling over his butt?
I needed more sleep and maybe a vibrator.”

Yancy needs to be cautious though, she has a little girl at home, she doesn't need to parade guys around. And maybe she isn't ready. But sweetheart Charles is so patient, and he seems to do everything she needs before she even realizes she needs it.
“You feel it too, don’t you? This pull between us. It makes your heart beat faster, your skin flush, and your eyes turn pure gold. Don’t you wonder? I know I do.”

Everyone in the novel is fairly normal. No horrible pasts to live down. Just a cautious, lonely, over worked mom, a regular, not too alpha, very sweet, patient guy, and an adorable little girl. There isn't much angst in this story, so it was a light, sweet, sexy romance that brought tears to my eyes (good ones) and I love books with kids in them!

Earning Yancy

Likes:

•I love Yancy and her friends.
•Visiting with Lucy, Chris and more insight into the other girls.
•I love a book with cute kids!
•Made me laugh out loud a few times.
•Made me tear up at the end.
•Longer than CCs novellas--full length!
•No horrible things that break me.
•A nice, light, easy book that contains funny, sweet, sexy and a few sad scenes.

Dislikes:

•The writing seemed a bit immature, especially at the beginning, with short sentences. I've seen CC write much stronger, or perhaps it's the editing.
•It felt like CC may have struggled herself with this book in the beginning until it got into a groove.
•It wasn't quite enough meat for an over 200 page novel, it still read like a quick and easy novella, and there was a lot that could have been edited out, there was a lot of detail.
•I wish Charles wasn't quite so perfect.

C.C.s books, except for Seasons%20of Sorrow" target="_blank">Seasons of Sorrow, are nice, light, fun, sexy reads. Most are novellas, and I think that C.C. is one of the best novella writers out there. Her Girl Next Door and Kiss%20Me" target="_blank">Kiss series are just perfect little in-between books. They almost read like mini Kristen Ashley stories. The NSFW series is that as well, even though this one is full length. It's one of those great to read after a dark mind-fuck books. I really enjoyed the first, In Love with Lucy. Finding Yancy made me feel like CC was a bit off her game at the beginning, but the last ⅔ of the book I gobbled up in one sitting, and I definitely think it was worth getting through the slightly rocky start.

If you are looking for a quick, easy read, with a single mom, and a workplace romance with a perfectly nice, dreamy guy, who while not totally alpha, had some good protective, masculine qualities, this is a great series. C.C. writes very realistic sex (nobody is coming from nipple touching here!), realistic problems that aren't over the top, and great girlfriends, and I can't wait to read the next one!

5 stars!

This is the second story in C.C. Woods NSFW series.

I LOVED this story, and I absolutely LOVE this author's voice!
I haven't read one thing that she's written that I haven't loved.

Ms. Wood writes about some seriously shitty situations.
In my opinion she has a way of telling a story without making 'light' of that situation but, her characters are AWESOME and the supporting characters are nutty, so the story gets told with respect to the situation but in a light way.

Her characters are strong, intelligent, sassy, loyal, and determined to do the best can in the situation they've been put in.
This story is no exception.
I loved Yancy's character!
Yancy is a single mother of a child who has Cystic Fibrosis. Her pregnancy wasn't planned, and when her baby was born her husband whined and complained about anything he was asked to do to help her with the baby.
When Carolena (Yancy's baby) was diagnosed with CF at 2 months old, her husband left her saying he couldn't put up with a sick child.
He filed for divorce, and paid child support for the first six months... and then he disappeared.

Yancy's been on her own raising her sick child for over a year. She has fantastic support from her family and friends, but she doesn't trust judgement when it comes to men and she is SO afraid to open her heart again.

.. then she meets Charles.

Charles has been hired as a project manager at her work place. For the first month he calls her 'Nancy', comes into her office at the last minute expecting her to stay late and talk about issues concerning an account their working on..and he's just a plain jerk to her.
Yancy's had enough.
She loses it on Charles. She shoves her name-plate in his chest and tells him her name is YANCY, and that she's a single mother of a sick child and can't stay late tonight, and that if he wants to talk to her about an account he should call her earlier in the day and set up a time to meet.

The day after Charles is a totally different man with Yancy.

This is where the story gets really good.
Charles and Yancy are amazing together!
Their relationship changes from one of animosity for one another to one of trust, hope, and love.

This story had me laughing, and also shedding a few tears.

I highly recommend this story!

Kudos to Ms. Wood!

The 2nd book in the NSFW series, by C.C. Wood (it is a stand alone!)is about Yancy Stevens, the caffeine addict. I liked her from the 1st book, In Love with Lucy, and couldn't wait to read her story.
This felt like a VERY quick read and was well written. The characters were love-able, the story was endearing, frustrating, exciting, and just PERFECT> I need a Charles in my life!
Yancy is trying to find a balance between having a career, being a single mom of a baby, and finding time to herself.
Charles, who leaves a TERRIBLE first impression, finds a way to get Yancy to open up, to trust, and ultimately love.
This wasn't entirely sweet and romantic, there was also realistic problems Yancy faces that made me cringe (and I found myself crossing my fingers while reading it)!
Overall: I LOVED the characters, the erotic scenes were HOT, the romance was sweet, and the story was believable (to an extent - I'll let you know if I ever meet a "real" Charles, lol).

This was a sweet fast read for me. Even though it is the second book in the series it can be read as a standalone. Yancy is a single mom, not by choice but by she is doing the best she can and actually doing an amazing job. With great friends, an amazing daughter and a job she loves Yancy is doing good, until she loses her temper with a new coworker. When Charles pronounces Yancy’s name yet again she flips out. That flip out moment actually leads to something, a beautiful story of learning to feel again, learning to trust again and learning to love again.

Characters: The characters were well written and believable. There need to be more men like
Charles in the world today, he was amazing.

Sex: yes

Religious: no

Would I recommend to others: yes

More than one book in the series: yes

Genre: Romance

Would I read more by this author: yes

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Yancy Stevens has had up to here with her new colleague, Charles Faulkner. Fed up and late to relieve her babysitter, Yancy let him have it, in no uncertain terms. Feeling like she was a little out of line, she made up her mind to apologize for her behavior only to have him apologize for his.

Charles Faulkner is a man with few faults. He's the perfect book boyfriend. Understanding, calm, loving and romantic. He could have used one or two flaws to shake things up with Yancy a bit, just to add a little more heat to their romance.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait until the next book in the series comes out.

Hear that, Ms. Woods? Get to writing!

"I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads."

This is a really sweet book, that restores your faith in the idea that there are good men out there. He may be just a little too perfect, but then he has sisters, and in this case they did a good job of moulding him! There are some real issues dealt with well, some funny bits for sure, and overall this is a cute read.

If you are hankering after a lovely story that is an easy read, this is definitely for you.

My review:

This is just the type of romance that I love! So sweet with no other women mentioned at ALL. Hardly any drama or angst with the cutest kid on the planet.

This was such a sweet read. The heroine starts out HATING the hero. You see, Charles, the hero, thought Yancy was so beautiful when he first started there and met her. But then he found out she had a child and then assumed she was married. So he started to shut his feelings down because he didn't want to be THAT guy that crushed on a married woman. He poured all of his focus and efforts into work and kept calling her NANCY LOL! So in the very first chapter, he did it again, but on the wrong day at the wrong time. Yancy had had enough and rips him a new one. It was hilarious!

So, he learns not only that she isn't married but that she has fire and he loves it. After that, he is the nicest person possible to her and pursues her until she gives him. He knows he has to have her. He is also so wonderful with her little girl Carolena.

This was so pleasant also because Charles and Yancy are together practically the entire book. He takes it slow with her and is there with her like no other. There are plenty of day in and day out type of scenes in this book, which some may find boring, but I found them endearing.

I can definitely see myself reading more by this author! :)

“Listen, Charles, my name is Yancy. Sounds like Nancy but starts with a ‘Y”, ‘Y’ as in yellow. Or how about ‘Y’ as in You’re an asshole.”

Earning Yancy is book 2 in the NSFW (Not Safe For Work) Series by C.C. Wood. I love C.C.’s writing and have yet to read a book by her I didn’t love. Her women are feisty and fun and her men have just enough Alpha in them to keep me wanting more. Earning Yancy is a fast and fun book about two co-workers who start off not liking each other AT ALL! Normally calm under pressure, Yancy, is pushed so much by the rudeness of Charles that she breaks down and yells at him. His response . . . start pursing her. Single mother Yancy has been burned by a bad marriage and divorce and isn’t wanting to date anyone. Her only focus is providing a good life for her sick little girl. Charles is arrogant and pushy but oh so handsome too. He gets under her skin and she finds herself thinking of him more than she would like.

“I needed more sleep and maybe a vibrator.”

As always, C.C.’s writing is full of quick wit and hilarious one liners. I love when an author understands humor and wit and gets it right and boy does C.C. The humor is there (and had me laughing hard) but it is subtle and doesn’t over power this love story. Earning Yancy really is a sweet love story about forgetting what you think is the right thing to do and following your heart. It was fun, sweet and super sexy just as I knew it would be. C.C.’s books aren’t long but they always pack a punch and I am always happy I sat down and read them. I definitely recommend this series and book!

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I was hooked from the first few pages. The first scene with Yancy and Charles had me cheering. As a working Mum I completely Yancy.

Charles is a great lead, sweet, smart, romantic understanding - maybe even a little too perfect. A flaw or two wouldn't have gone astray.

Earning Yancy is a good, fun, traditional romantic story that left me smiling. It is well worth reading.

It took me forever to get through this book. It was just too slow paced for me and nothing terribly exciting happens throughout the whole book.

One thing that has stuck out for me is how much this heroine drinks! LOL She was always drinking wine or beer. So much so that every time she mentioned needing wine I thought "not again!!" haha.

I also couldn't rate this higher because there's no H's POV. That's just something I need in my books these days. I would've loved to see inside his head.

Yancy Stevens hasn't looked, thought, or touched a man since her husband left her and their young child. Not wanting the strains of raising a child with cystic fibrosis, he walked out leaving her suffering from not only a broken heart but the weight of never appreciating the precious child they created together. Yancy can't deny she didn't notice her new colleague, her was handsome but his constant calling her the wrong name and his arrogance has left Yancy ready to burst and she does all over Charles Faulkner. The results are surprising and Yancy is worried that she may not be able to figure out if Charles is worth it or not.

I fell a little bit in love with Charles as well in this story. This is one of those reads that sweeps you off your feet. Yancy has been burned badly, you are left reeling with what she has had to deal with on her plate but she does it because of the unconditional love she has for her daughter. Charles once he admits his attraction sets out to create a future with Yancy, she may not realize his full intentions right away but he allows Yancy to set all the paces. I so appreciated this aspect of the story, it is sweet and wonderful. This would be a perfect read for end of summer relaxation. High praise.

I was in a book funk until this showed up on my kindle.
I think I love Yancy's story more then Lucy's. I laughed with Yancy and I cried with and for her. I know, I'm a big baby.

I don't want too give to much away but some people are asses and shouldn't have kids, much less be a sperm donor.

All I'm saying is a hate C.c. Wood right now. How long do I have to wait to read the third book?

Yes. I read this. Even after the first disaster book the title of which I can't remember. This too was a waste of energy and time. It felt like a the writer was reading aloud from her journal, that she had edited in her spare time to make her look good, referencing every self help book, about empowerment and self worth to infuse her heroines with a modicum of personality. As a guideline to how to behave as a sane, together woman, during the first months of a budding romance it would actually serve well. As a romance book, it was tedious. Yaaaaawn!

4.5 Stars! For more on this review, please see...

http://www.scandaliciousbookreviews.c...

In the interest of full disclosure, I will tell you that a few of the ladies here at Scandalicious Book Reviews were involved in the editing and publishing process of Earning Yancy. I still wanted to take the opportunity to share my honest thoughts but felt you should be aware of my personal connection to this book.

Earning Yancy is the second installment in the NSFW series by C.C. Wood which centers around a group of five women who meet and became close friends while working in the same high-rise office building. Although originally dubbed a novella series, Yancy and Charles seemed to grab hold of C.C. and she wasn't able to shake them until a story of just over 200 pages had taken root. I, for one, am more than happy with this outcome! C.C. Wood can write a hot little novella and long before I became a contributor to Scandalicious Book Reviews, on the advice of the boss lady (see, I do listen to you... occasionally), I read Friends with Benefits and Frenemies, the first two novellas in the Girl Next Door series, and really enjoyed them. Novellas can be great little reads that provide instant gratification with a quick story or can be the perfect pick-me-up you need after an emotional book hangover. But sometimes, the story needs a little more time for realistic development and explanation and C.C. completely does these characters justice with the right amount of back story, an organically developing relationship, with genuine trials and tribulations of a budding office romance for a juggling single parent.

Yancy Stevens was a completely relatable character for me. I returned to work full-time after my first child was born and part-time after my second and although I am not divorced, my husband works out of town more than he is home, and I often joked that I was a single-parent with the luxury of two incomes. Yancy struggles with balancing a career while guilt ridden over being a working parent all while riding a caffeine induced high to keep it all together. Let's not forget the jackass ex-husband who abandoned her and sweet baby Carolena leaving Yancy emotionally and financially on her own. Yancy is a very likeable character who is devoted to her daughter, has a dedicated work ethic and even though she has supportive family and friends, she still struggles with self doubt and exhaustion. While she doesn't begrudge her situation (read between the lines, she is not a bitter man hater) she definitely has a different version of her own happily ever after.

Enter Charles Faulkner. A new co-worker who shares the same rung on the corporate ladder with Yancy, he comes across as aloof and completely clueless whenever he interacts with her. But is he? After Yancy clears up a few misconceptions, it appears Charles has a change in attitude with an entirely new focus. Charles is the quintessential Beta man. He is charming and sweet with his All-American good looks. There is no hidden agenda. He sees, he likes, he woos. He is caring and kind with a genuine love and respect for his mother and sister. Just as content in front of a t.v. with a beer and a basketball game, he enjoys a chick flick from time to time. Don't equate this to weakness. Charles has no problem protecting his interests or bringing his A-game to the bedroom. While Charles is perfectly rounded out with the right amount of bossy and sweet, impeccable manners and respect, what truly sets him apart is that when he finally has the chance to interact with Yancy's daughter, he doesn't blink an eye. Carolena is an extension of Yancy and he effortlessly returns her affection, is attentive to her needs and without question steps in to help or take care of her. That, is a special man right there! Ahhhh... Charles Faulkner. I would have liked you regardless of whether or not C.C. had compared your external gorgeousness to Captain America. But like all superhero stories, there is always a villain...

With my inside connection, you would think I could give you some insight on what was up next in the series, but I have no clue. It appears the groundwork has been set for Tanya, (did you name her after me?) the ballbusting divorce attorney who seems to have her own office drama unfolding at her law firm. But then quiet, unassuming Grier seems to be hiding something too. Hmmmm, just when you thought it was safe to return to the office...

Earning Yancy, book 2 in the NSFW series was FANTASTIC!
***Book 2 is not a novella like In Love With Lucy ***

I loved In Love With Lucy and like that story, I could not put this book down. One of the things that I love about C.C. Wood's writing is that her characters are so relatable, whether it be a fun series like this one or The Girl Next Door series , a paranormal story like the Bitten Series or even the emotional roller coaster that was Season of Sorrow . These are people that I would hang out with if they were real. And with Yancy, I can completely relate to her feelings of shyness around new people.

Yancy Stevens is a single mother. Her ex-husband left her not long after she had her daughter Carolena (love that name). See I write her daughter and not their daughter because her ex - Cooper - was never really a father to her and Yancy pretty much from her birth raised her like a single mother. She has her steady support group of Lucy ( In Love With Lucy ), Tanya, Grier and Chelsea. And now a possible office romance with Charles Faulkner - her one time nemesis (for being a jerk and calling her Nancy when he knows it is Yancy plus a few other minor jerkiness) and now love interest.

Charles Faulkner has been with the company a month before the story starts. He has this annoying habit of calling Yancy Nancy. One day he just pushes that wrong button and Yancy explodes on him. You see, he was mistakenly under the wrong impression that Yancy was married after hearing her and their boss discuss her daughter. Charles liked Yancy but thought she was off the market so he resorted to juvenile boy behavior with her. Remember in school how if a boy liked you they would pull your hair, tease you, call you the wrong name. Stuff like that. ;-) They apologize to each other for the little blow up that occurred and start to get along. Charles asks Yancy to lunch and from there their little romance begins to bloom.

Everything is going great. Charles is such a sweetheart. He gives Yancy the room and time she needs to feel comfortable dating again and understands her initial resistance to introducing him to her 18 month old daughter. That's one of the things that I really appreciated in this story, that he was understanding and not all Alpha male dominant and tried to force her to be with him on his terms. Just as Yancy is getting comfortable with the new man in her life is when of course her ex makes a reappearance. So what happens? Does this present a strain in Yancy and Charles new relationship? Does Cooper become a part of Carolena's life? Is Cooper trying to win back Yancy and will she go back to him even though she has genuine feelings for Charles? Well, I could tell you but I think it would be more fun to read to see what happens. ;-)

I look forward to the next book in the series.

So this is the second book in the Not Safe For Work (NSFW) Series by C.C. Wood, and I had high expectations since I loved In Love With Lucy. As you can see from that review, I was hoping that the second book in this series would be about Grier, but to my surprise, it was about Yancy. A divorcee with a manipulative ex-husband named Cooper who suddenly reappeared after the federales coming after him for child support. Thank goodness that Yancy opened her heart to her co-worker Charles.

Here are my random thoughts on this book in no particular order:

#1 I love how Charles was the complete opposite of Cooper. Where Cooper was an asshole, Charles was endearing. Where Cooper could care less about his daughter Carolena, Charles fell in love with the adorable tot immediately.

#2 Speaking of Charles, how adorable is he that Bella’s Lullably was his ringtone. How adorable was he that he liked romantic comedies. I loved how much he adored his family and Yancy (+Carolena). How adorable was he that he called her Nancy instead of Yancy. (Okay, Yancy may disagree).

#3 I applaud Yancy for being open to love again. I’m happy she wasn't a bitter divorcee. She was hesitant but not resistant to Charles.

#4 I once again loved the friendship/sisterhood between the girls, and now I want to know more about Tanya. I swear each book I find a new girl to love. LOL!

#5 Charles and Yancy together were the perfect match, and as you guessed, a happily ever after was predictable.

#6 Easy, breezy story with very relatable characters. This story wasn't fantastical. Quite believable. Outside of a crappy ex, there was no drama.

#7 Between you and me, I prefer Book #1 in this series, but this follow-up wasn’t too bad. I didn’t love it, but I did enjoy it. On a scale of 1-5, I’ll give it 3.75 stars.

P.S. I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Earning Yancy, the second book in C.C. Woods Not Safe For Work Series was so much more than what I was expecting, and that's not to say I didn't love In Love With Lucy, it was a fun, fast read with perfect comedic timing and with enough heat, but Earning Yancy while it still had me laughing out loud at times, for me it was a little more serious, had a little more heart. It held me captivated from the first page to the last line.

Yancy Stevens is finally out from underneath her good for nothing ex-husband, juggling a successful career and being single mother to a beautiful 18 month old daughter with cystic fibrosis is proving to be challenging. She's been out of the dating scene for longer than she likes to admit, and while the idea of finding someone is enticing the idea of opening herself up to the chance of future heartbreak isn't something she's ready for.

Charles Faulkner, Yancy's new work colleague is as arrogant as he is good looking, his inability to remember Yancy's name is frustrating and his demeanour offensive. But first impressions aren't always right and Yancy is about to find out that there may be some truth in the playground theory of little boys who pull a girls hair to get their attention.

Earning Yancy, is a story of second chances, finding the one, and for never settling for less than you deserve. Wood uses her comedic timing perfectly to execute many laugh out loud moments, when I wasn't laughing I was swooning over Charles and cheering Yancy on as she struggled with opening her heart and her child to someone new. If you're looking for a sweet, sassy, heartwarming afternoon read, Earning Yancy ticks all the boxes, can't wait to hear more from this crazy bunch of women.

Easily a 4.5 star read. I'd been having an especially rotten day when I sat down to read this book. I'm pleased to say, Yancy and especially Charles, turned my frown upside down! What a great guy...he might be classified as a BETA guy, I'm never completely sure what those parameters are, but he is a little slice of goodness in my book. He lets a very skittish (and rightfully so) Yancy take the lead in the pace of their romance but when he needs to, he's more than alpha with his protective gene...and the sexy times...yeah, he nails that too. But CC Wood always writes excellent sexy times!

Thoroughly enjoy any books written by this author and this one is even more exceptional because she touches on a topic which is very near and dear to my heart... Dealing with a child with a serious, life threatening disease. Specifically Cystic Fibrosis. My son was born with this disease and while the book didn't go into all the gory details, it touched on how a single parent deals with worrying about her child's health and doing treatments, while still trying to coordinate working, childcare, socializing with friends... Toss in some romance (okay, hot steamy, alpha romance), well meaning family and an annoying ex and it makes for a fabulous read.

4.5

Warning: May contain a spoiler.
This was the second book in this series and it was very sweet. Both Yancy and Charles were nice characters and it made a book that was enjoyable with a lovely story and HEA. The missing half a star was due to story not having any real climax within it and I think I would have liked to see a little more friction and chemistry between Yancy and Charles at the start of the book - like we did with In Love With Lucy.
Overall it was a good book although I missed some of the usual C.C Wood feistiness I think but still really enjoyable and a good lead into Tanya's book!
Good work C.C!

Yancy and Charles are destined to be together but you would never know it because they have a hate to love relationship. Yancy is a divorced single mother of a beautiful baby girl and a dead beat ex husband. Charles is a smart and sexy co-worker who treats Yancy badly because he is attracted to her. Things start to heat up and their is no looking back and it is a great romantically fun ride. I really like this series!

Loved this story. Yancy finds her inner strength while learning that it's also ok to lean on someone too. Charles is a great guy, loved how he helped Yancy be a better person. Great story with a beautiful ending.

A sweet story about single mom, Yancy, and her coworker, Charles and what they have to endure to stay together. Not only did I fall for Charles and Yancy, but also her daughter, Carolena.
