A Missing Treasure. A Suspect Suicide. A Mystery Unsolved
When an eccentric millionaire presents at the Dublin Coroner's Office to report a found treasure, Benjamin Stirling sends him on to the National Museum. It is only when the man is found dead on his land on Tarrow Island and no treasure is mentioned when Stirling begins to get suspicious.
Aged and recently widowed, Stirling makes inquiries but is stumped at every turn. He decides to take matters into his own hands and find out the truth once and for all. Heading down to the Atlantic West Coast of Ireland, he intends to find out what happened to Nicholas Sparks and the vanishing Spanish Armada Gold he claimed to have unearthed.
Local police, councilmen and other officials are no help to him and Stirling must rely on his own wits and the local people for his answers. The more he finds out, the more determined he is that Spark's death was no suicide. Something much more sinister is at work here....

Yes, the lead character is a coroner... but he is engaged in the story due to an obscure rule that requires that found treasure must be reported to him.
Benjamin Stirling is still coming to terms with the death of his wife. Nicholas Spark visits to report a find but about a week later commits suicide (although not in Stirling's area of control).
Stirling decides to take some time off work and head off to find out what happened to the treasure.
The Coroner by European P. Douglas is a page-turning cozy mystery. Benjamin Stirling is a Coroner in Dublin who is approached by Nicholas Sparks claiming to find treasure from the Spanish Armada. He wants to donate the treasure to the Museum. Stirling later finds out that Sparks has committed suicide. This raises questions to Stirling because Sparks did not seem suicidal. Stirling launches an amateur investigation to try to get answers and Stirling is almost murdered in the process.
This is a mystery that will keep you turning pages. The plot and characters are well developed and the mystery had me trying to unravel it until the end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and I highly recommend it. I received this book as an advance reader copy; I always review every book that I read. Enjoy!!
Reminiscent of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. One question though, with all his generosity and good will, nobody from the community and the people and foundations he helped even bothered to make any cursory inquiries given the cause of death... the personality of the victim as opposed to the characters of his heirs and the involvement of the wind turbine company?... Not even a shade of doubt in passing? Doesn't the death of a millionaire and prominent philanthropist even merit a deeper investigation by the police and that includes the coroner and the local authority like the mayor? Even if Spark was eccentric, such a characteristic should not preclude any investigations or questions regarding his suicide. Plus, for those who regularly benefit from his munificence, especially institutions, the death of the proverbial goose that lays the golden eggs should require at least their own private inquiries into the matter. So many indifferent, unconcerned and ungrateful people in such a close~knit community. Strange...
Coroners, a Spanish Armada treasure, wind farms, and death.
Our main character is a "getting up there in age" widowed coroner who is good at his job but has too much stress in his life. An eccentric man comes to his office to inform him that he has found gold from the Spanish Armada. He is directed to the National Museum, end of story. But is it? He never shows up at the museum and is later found hanged. Was it suicide? What about the wind farm people that are found taking measurements on his land in the middle of the night?
I found this to be a quick, entertaining, satisfying read, that was hard to put down. It kept me guessing. I hope this is the beginning of a long series.
A coroner (Benjamin Stirling). A stranger (Nicholas Sparks) who knocks at the coroner’s door to talk about something that has nothing to do with dead body. Some gold from the Spanish Armada…. When Stirling hears about the death of Nicholas Sparks - in fact, he has committed suicide – he finds that everything looks suspicious. Stirling decides to launch into his own investigation in order to find out the truth… but entangles himself in a web of mysteries and secrets instead… and put his life in jeopardy.. European P. Douglas, who is a master of suspense and thriller, has once again cleverly spun a fast-paced, page-turning thriller. Benjamin Stirling is a likeable coroner, and I would love to read more of him in this new series (hopefully each one is a stand alone).
5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Wow! Great book! This book was written so well! It held me glued to my seat! I couldn't put it down! The main character was intreging! The plot was clear and I loved how it flowed from interesting facts to action packed scenes! This author can really write! I loved how the main character came alive in the story and put his genius together to figure out the clues hidden in plain sight. I hope this is book one in a series, because I want more! This is a must read! Enjoy! I read an ARC of this book and this is my voluntaty honest review.
Excellent book, twists and turns literally to the last page. Cozy suspense is a good description of the style even if that does seem to be an oxymoron. Very character driven, well thought out, but no excessive terrorizing of the reader involved! I read in one sitting, part of which was while eating supper. I hope there will be many more of this series.
Well written book that keeps your interest! Cozy mystery lovers especially need to read this book but anyone who likes a well written book with interesting characters will also be pleased.I received a free book from the author. This is my honest review.
A coroner investigates a death in another jurisdiction in Ireland. Good writing and plot, excellent detail - all up to about the 93% mark. Then the story becomes rushed, moving to resolution. The change was disappointing.
As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, Bookhub, BookFunnel, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read.
At the Dublin Coroner's Office, Benjamin Stirling receives a visit from Nicholas Spark to report a treasure find. Stirling sends him to the National Museum. Later, hearing that Spark has committed suicide, Stirling is unsettled by the verdict and decides to investigate. An enjoyable and well-written mystery.
This is a pleasant cozy mystery. Since most cozies tend to feature women sleuths, this was a good change of perspective; the main character is an older man who is a coroner. He can’t explain fully why he feels the need to investigate, but instead of forgetting the incident he follows his hunch. I enjoyed reading it.
Was looking for new authors, and came across a free read. So enjoyed this book! Will definitely reading more from this author. Characters are very likeable. And believable. I couldn't put it down!
This book was amazing! I liked it so much I stayed up all night reading it. The writing was very good, the descriptions were so good I felt like I was right there with the coroner. I would love to wead something else by this author. The story was so believable.
