Animal-rescue officer Candice thought she'd seen it all. That was before the unicorn...or, rather, unicorns.

When a smoking hot firefighter turns up at her emergency center, the baby unicorn in his arms turns out to be the least unusual thing about him. And he wants Candice for more than her fully-equipped rescue trailer....

Unicorn-shifter Wystan thought meeting his true mate would solve all his problems. Now he's got an adorable and unruly mystery on his hands, the mother of all wildfires breathing down his neck, and dark forces closing in on all sides. How's he supposed to romance this blunt, prickly, astonishing woman during all this - especially when Candice guards her heart as fiercely as she protects the animals under her care?

But when unicorns are real, dreams can come true...and so can nightmares.

I'm in the minority by saying this, but it was just okay. I'll probably keep up with the series because I really want to know about Blaise, but I won't be in a rush.

I know I'm going against the grain here with the other reviewers but this book was NOT like the others in the series for two reasons:

1. The writing style (or voice I guess is what it's called) was alittle sloppier and unrealistic than usual, and that's saying something for a series that's already off the deep end unrealistic. Some of the scenes were downright disjointed and the hail mary at the end was like hmmm....ok.
2. Not. A. Single. Sex. Scene.....yeah um so this might not bother anyone else and that's cool but every other book in this entire series (and I've read them all) have a least one sweet sex scene in them. Don't pretend you don't look forward to them! I was sooo looking forward to the scene and it just skips right over it. POOF! Not there...One minute they are getting hot and heavy, they next he's in a dream then to add insult to injury, he NEVER even flashback or thinks about it.

So unicorns being my favorite of all the shifters, I was disappointed. I hope they pull out the stops for Joe, and get back on track with what I fell in love with in this series.

Wystan is a unicorn shifter and at the end of the last book, he and his team find a baby unicorn in the bushes as they are fighting a huge fire. Unicorn shifters were supposed to be able to heal but Wystan didn't have that ability and he felt like a failure. So he did the only thing he could do in this circumstance, he brought the tiny unicorn to the nearest veterinarian.

When we first meet Candice she's trying to help a rat that was left behind by its owner. I love rats so of course I already loved her. Candice is the senior animal control officer and she has tents set up at the camp for the firefighters to bring in the injured animals they found while fighting the fires.

When Candice sees the baby unicorn for the first time she thinks it's an albino baby deer so there's no big drama around that. But then a powerful force that they've decided to call, nightmare follows them all back to camp and wrecks havoc all around them. There's also a powerful shifter that they've tried once in the first book to make contact with, but they aren't sure if it understands them. If they are going to get out of this alive, the'll have to try and reason with the shifter and help the evil thing that's stalking them.

Candice and Wystan are very much opposites and each has some baggage but Candice is very standoffish because of what happened to her in the past which makes their love story a slow burn romance which I was fine with. They took their time and got to know one another before going further.

There's a huge twist that leads to a really big secret and I liked it and thought it was a cool reveal. A lot happens in a short amount of time at this point and it kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. I really liked how this ended though and am really looking forward to the next book.

Yeah, so I flew through this one like Rory's been carrying me on his back. Great writing (totally addictive, to be honest) and a group of shifters that just grew on me. I'm not sure how I feel about Flash (okay, I do, I love her, adorable as hell) and all that she brought with her yet (this, I really can't figure out...) but I'll be in for the rest of this series. Even if things are kept a little shallow at times. And the epilogue totally made me curious about Joe. So on to the Wildfire Sea Dragon!

I really liked the first book in this series. In spite of what you think based on the cover art, the world building was great. There was a lot of story beyond the romance elements.

Then I read this book and for the first 70% I wondered if the same person wrote it. I was close to DNF on it. I'm glad I stuck with it because the last third was more consistent with the first book. However, it's not strong. I liked seeing wystans unique power, but how it came about was totally predictable. "Baby" lemme tell you, the lead heroine was super annoying "bud" (this is how she talked all the freaking time, over and over for all of eternity; her dialogue was like nails on a chalkboard). The plot is super messy. We continue with the first book, but how the author gets the reader to the conclusion makes you wonder how much this was all planned out. There were several action sequences that were "fade to black," and then never explained in the next chapter. How is that ok? It was so frustrating at times. Also, note to the lead characters we ALL get it- you're going to take it one day at a time, forever and ever until you die.

All in all it wasn't great. Which disappoints me bc I was super pumped about continuing the series after the first book. She incorporates the premise for the next book at the end of this one, and does.....A CLIFFHANGER. Listen, this is getting annoying AF that authors are really relying on things like this to keep us reading. Build your world and characters well, and you gain fans. Fans keep reading regardless, and in a series like this, we really are going to enjoy and appreciate each book having its own completely satisfying ending. I don't need to peak behind the curtain to see what's next- I'll keep going if your doing your story justice and writing it well.

Rant end. I'll probably give it one more book. Best two outta three, am I right bud??

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I received a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I buy most of Zoe Chant’s books because I love her HEAs and her style of writing! I have bought this book too!

The cover is amazing, but I am very partial to unicorns!

I love this spin-off series especially since it is the kids of the original series, but they have their own adventure, and they find their mates along the way! This is the 2nd book in this series, and it is Wystan turn to find his mate. Of course, this is for adults only due to the steamy content and violence. The Thunderbird is back as well as a few demons. Wystan must keep an adorable unicorn named Flash safe from everything including herself while trying to woo his mate. Candice has some baggage which complicates things between her and Wystan. This story was action-packed, magical, and amazing! I loved it! Mythical shifters are my favorite! I can’t wait for the next book!

I highly recommend to any mythical shifter fans especially if you love Zoe’s work like I do! If you haven’t read her work yet, you should check it out because she has a way with HEAs, action, and shifters!

So, in this world the legend about unicorns and virgins? Partially based on fact. Paramedic and firefighter Wystan is a unicorn shifter, and a virgin -- because unicorn shifters who have sex with someone other than their true love/fated mate lose the ability to shift into their animal form for good. Which is good and bad for Wystan -- he's met his true mate, animal rescuer Candice, but bad, because all she's interested in is a fling, which he can't do.

I love shy Wystan, spunky Candice, and Flash, the adorable baby unicorn they rescued. The juxtaposition of Wystan's awkwardness in relationships and Candice's forwardness is a nice change of pace from most other romance novels. Plus the unicorn rescue plot line is fresh and compelling (and adds a lot to the overall narrative of the series, though I won't say more because of spoilers).

I just couldn't get into it. It was too busy and I didn't understand a lot of what was going on. The world building is too thin and piece meal to support a series. The focus doesn't really seem to be on the romance either though so nothing really worked. It also felt like there was gonna be a trend of something being "wrong" with the heroine while the hero was a perfect physical specimen which may work in a one off but not as a repetitive instance in a series. If the author had done more world building or focused more on the romance than the other moving parts this might've worked but as written I couldn't keep up. Dnf

💢To bad I can only give five stars this series needs more. Siting on the edge of my seat is an understatement.

Somethings to know and watch !
📍Who is the Phoenix that is after the Wildfire Crew or is it after the Black Smoke who is a Demon? Our Wildfire Crew is Rory who is a Griffin, Callum is a Pegasus, Joe is a Sea Dragon, Fenrir is a Hellhound, Wystan is a Unicorn or is he?

🔹️Wystan Silver is a Unicorn Shifter, with the
Thunder Mountain Hotshots, right now they are fighting the huge wildfire in Northern California. Did you know Unicorns can heal? Not Wystan he says he's broken.

🔹️Candice Ayres is a Animal Rescue Officer, she loves animals and they love her. Because of a traumatic betrayal Candice will never trust any man. She feels flawed, imperfect, consequentially only one night stand were for her.

At the start of this one Candice cracked me up. I liked how forward she was with Wystan, it's just her bad luck that Wystan is what he is and random meaningless sex was off the table for him. I kept laughing as Wystan tried to explain things to her, more so when he had to flat out admit he was a virgin. But after that the two of them drove me nuts, each was solid in their feelings and didn't want to see things from the other side, til they were forced into it towards the end when all the action went down. I do think it is funny how things ended, loved that Candice and Wystan figured out there crap and how they now have new members of their family. I'm very glad that Flash is still around, she was great!

Pure of heart
This book was so good that I’m already anticipating the next one. The author did a fantastic job of making us fall more in love with the hotshot crew and the mates that keep popping up. This book is full of unicorns and hot firemen, not to mention a few other shifters and their human counterparts. Each book in this series builds upon the last with a much deserved HEA at the end of each installment. What more could we ask for? Why the next book, of course.

3.5 stars. Pretty good story. I appreciate the idea that fated mates still need to learn each other and work on their relationship. I love the little unicorn and it’s frustrating that the heroes in these books don’t listen to their mates or inner animals.

Also, the treatment of Joe is bizarre. It feels like the author is writing a weird version of a black male stereotype. He is super promiscuous (at least in reputation), likes spicy (which is shown by him putting hot sauce in coffee!! Wha!?), and he uses slang more than any other character (Bronicorn!). It’s a little off putting.

My little-girl heart still loves unicorns. These ones are done so well, and I love the animal rehabber, too. Just a really fun, fantastic, escapist read. With unicorns. And a really stupid cover, but don't hold that against it, that's why Kindles were invented.

Humor and surprise plot twists

Be careful reading this in public, people will question why you're smiling and giggling to yourself as you read. Very humorous, good editing, a quick plot with some surprising turns. Definitely helps if you've read the previous books in the series. I look forward to the next one!

Another great addition to the Fire and Rescue books. We find out why Wys was having problems with healing powers, we find another kickbutt chick to hang with the crew, and there are unicorns. I repeat: There. Are. Unicorns. The story with the thunderbird and the demons is developed here, and I like that we are seeing that unfold through multiple stories. This was a whole lot of fun, and I loved it.

This is book two in the Fire & Rescue Shifters: Wildfire Crew series. The characters in this book are the children from the original series. While the original series is set in Europe this one is set in America. The hero is Wystan. A hotshot firefighter. And a unicorn. A virgin unicorn. Because if a unicorn shifter has sex with anyone other than its fated mate, who has to be in love with them, they will lose their unicorn. The heroine is Candice. She works for a rescue group, and is currently working on a wildfire. A human who has no knowledge of shifters. She has a much higher tolerance for animals than she does for people.

While fighting a fire the shifter crew finds a unicorn. A real unicorn! Even the shifter crew is shocked...real unicorns exist? And this unicorn, named Flash, can make herself look like a deer. Wystan takes the baby unicorn to be checked out by the animal rescue and meets Candice. Wystan instantly recognizes her as his fated mate, but Candice is only interested in sex. Wystan risk losing his unicorn if he has sex with Candice before she is in love with him. So how does he get her to fall in love with him when she only wants what he can't give her?

The evil creature that has been stalking the shifter crew is now after Flash, which leads to Candice learning about the mythical creature shifters. Candice easily accepts the idea of shifters, but is still reluctant to accept the idea of a mate or a relationship with Wystan. Candice and Wystan have a rocky road to a relationship. They want different things. Candice has trust issues. Especially when she finds out Wystan believes he will come into his healing powers when his fated mate fall in love with him. So does Wystan really want her or just his healing powers? Finding Flash's home, helping her heard, fighting the evil creature, and figuring out their relationship keep Candice and Wystan busy. Eventually, the do find their happy every after.

I enjoyed this book, but I did not connect to Wystan and Candice like I did the hero/heroine of the first book. I just felt like Wystan was very reserved and sometimes more interested in his powers than a relationship. Candice's continued resistance to a relationship was also distracting me from connecting to her. Despite the disconnect overall this book was worth the read. There was still a lot of humor in this book, and learning about the other characters continues to be interested. I will continue with the series.

This is the 2nd book in the second series.

I started reading Zoe because of a friend and this book met most of my expectations.

Like the first series, the plot was in depth and nicely revealed throughout the story. She keeps you guessing and moving forward towards the book. The pacing was appropriate.

The dialogue between the characters was spot on, funny (I love an author who can write good humor) and felt like I was in a conversation with my closest friends. (BFF -bronicorn friends forever!)

The romance though is 50/50 for me. I mean the chemistry was good and not forced between the two characters. There were even moments that my heart strings were pulled. But...where'd the sex scenes go? I blink and then done! It was more of a fade to black rather than an actual written out sex scene. This is totally different from her first series. Now I know Zoe is a pen name for 4? women but I know that each of them at least writes one series each. So I know that the author didn't change for this series. I wonder what changed. That was the only complaint I have and really expected this from this author.

Otherwise for romance and plot, I still highly recommend you read this series and Fire and Rescue series from this author. I would still continue to support this author and all her books.

The continuation of the background story made this readable for me.
Whilst I loved reading about this wonderful crew, this book just didn’t resonate with me.
I found Candice aggressive and unlikeable at the beginning with her one track mind. Who propositions a strange man for sex right of the bat. She knows nothing about Wystan or who he is, apart from the fact he looks pretty.
So not how I like my heroine to behave.
Poor Wystan felt like he was under attack. All he wanted to do was get to know his mate and have her fall in love with him.
Only continued reading due to the hero and the baby unicorn. Wanted to know what happens.
Wystan does get his mate but not before he really screws up.
I will say the story itself was interesting and entertaining if slightly strange.
Wystan’s powers when they finally arrive are different.

I don't find that any of these books fit as "romances." There is very, very little romance in any of them. And that's OK. There's also not a ton of chemistry is any of the books, which is disappointing. And the steamy scenes in all of her books are pretty bad. They are dull. And this series has less of those scenes than the original. (I've read the whole series and the original series.)

I do love the unicorns. Flash is perfect and continues to be throughout the series. Wystan has been disappointed because he can't heal. And I was pleased that mating didn't fix that. At least the book wasn't that obvious.

In all honesty, I'm not sure what draws me to these books. They are not what I'm looking for when I look for shifter romances. There's rarely an alpha vibe. No sweetly possessive alpha males. No deep chemistry. No deep connection when they finally mate. I do love the uniqueness of some of the shifter types but then roll my eyes at others. (I'm still stuck on an octopus shifter in the first series. What good is that??) And the shifter part of Joe's book is downright cheesy. In fact, I think the whole series and the previous series are borderline cheesy but somehow not.

For the most part, there isn't too much angst. I do like that. I think I would prefer to not have an ongoing story that lasts all 6 books. I enjoy the ongoing story of the thunderbird but get tired of the whole demon bit. It makes the stories a little too similar in some parts.

And, again, honestly, there really isn't that much humor in the book. Certainly not as much as the blurbs would make you think but I had a hard time putting almost all of them down. I usually don't want to stop until I get to that point where the other person finds out they're mates or whatever we're waiting on there.

Her writing has progressed, though. The first couple of books in the first series were really underdeveloped and definitely needed to be improved. And this series is definitely better. The stories are more complete.

In this book, I don't love our FMC for most of the book. She isn't the worst ever but she is no where near endearing. But those unicorns absolutely steal the show.

If you've given all the books 5 star ratings so far, I'm sure you will enjoy this one, too. If you are borderline on how you like the series, the unicorns will probably be about the only part you like. And that Wystan the "fixing" of Wystan's unicorn isn't what we think.

MY RATING GUIDE: 3-3.5 Stars. For the most part, I enjoyed WILDFIRE UNICORN. This book continues the ongoing story arc which began with bk1 and most likely concludes in the final book (book6). WILDFIRE UNICORN contains a complete mini-conflict, resolution and HEA.

1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= THIS WAS OKAY; 3.5= I ENJOYED IT; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).

Comments ~
1) WILDFIRE UNICORN is bk2 of a 6bk series. The author recommends readers begin with book 1 so the introduction of characters and the beginning of the series’ story arc isn’t missed. For best enjoyment, I would agree.
2) WILDFIRE UNICORN is a shifter novel which includes unusual shifter characters (a Pegasus, Phoenix, Griffin, Hellhound and Sea-dragon). Although certain content is sobering (the physical results of surviving a fiery inferno), the tone for this series is kept mostly light.
3) I thought Chant portrayed the FMC realistically, considering her past (gradually revealed). I didn’t really identify with the FMC character until about 1/2 way into the book. The MMC’s “background” was unique in its own fashion. These characters weren’t among my favorite but I enjoyed the storyline. I purchased a number of these books during a recent sale and will eventually check out the next book. The overall arc caught my attention.
4) The WILDFIRE SHIFTER series is a “second generation” series. It follows the children of Chant’s “Fire and Rescue Shifters” series. The WILDFIRE SHIFTER series might best be enjoyed by those who read:
> Light Shifter Romance Suspense novels.
> Quick and easy, light/escape fiction (Palate Cleansers between more serious or other genres).
> Chant’s light Shifter Romances

READER CAUTION ~ Not recommended to readers who prefer Clean fiction or to YA readers.
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used on occasion.
VIOLENCE - PG. Tone is fairly light.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. Brief intimacy occurs (which could be skipped if desired).

WILDFIRE UNICORN

HERO /HEROINE:
Wystan is a wildland firefighter and paramedic in Montana, a hotshot and a unicorn shifter. Unicorn shifters have the ability to heal with their horn, but Wystan has never healed someone before no matter how hard he's tried.

Candice is an animal control officer. She has burn scars on the side of her face and does not trust having relationships with me

REPRESENTATION: Shifter Romance

OVERALL THOUGHTS:
Great writing and nice story, but I just couldn't get with this couple.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
The argument they had in the third act was about Wystan’s underlying need to have power, unicorn power, healing power, protection power. Whatever you want to call it, he was so focused on that and healing Candice's burn scars that he missed the point entirely. So much so, they fought, he closed himself off, and then let someone manipulate him because of how short sighted he was being. Even after all of that was finished and the day was saved, it's not discussed. They just kiss and continue on with a hfn. And I do mean “Happy For Now” there was nothing loving about this couple. The author did a great job at showing Candice's indifference to her mate. She did not care one bit about a mate bond, only doing her duty in taking care of animals.

She was horny though, so I guess that solidified the mate bond. Not because she genuinely loved him.

FAVORITE QUOTES:

SAFETY

AGE:
Not mentioned, I'm guessing mid twenties.

SEXUAL HISTORY:
Wystan is a virgin
Candice is a one night stand type of girl.

CONDOMS:

TUMMY BUTTERFLIES:

PUSH/PULL:
Candice the entire friggin time

SEX SCENE WITH OW/OM:
No

POSSIBLE PET PEEVES/TRIGGERS:

I was looking through my library's catalog for books on unicorns for a story time project, and rather unexpectedly and inexplicably THIS was the FIRST book to come up! Sadly it wouldn't work for my preschoolers, but naturally, I HAD to read it for myself, for, erm, research purposes.

He's hot. He's a fire fighter. He's also a shape-shifter unicorn. Oh, and he's a virgin. And then we later find out that he's rich. And comes from royal blood. I will play along with any TWO of those qualities, but more than that feels like a bit much.

Like, someone can be a fire fighter and a paramedic, but they aren't going to be hot too. Too much, I don't buy it! You can be hot and a virgin, but not a firefighter too. C'mon! I'll give you hot shape-shifter unicorn, but ANY MORE THAN THAT....

Yet...

Somehow... the author makes it work. Frankly, I thought this would be terrible, laughably bad so I could hate-read it and make fun of it to my book nerd friends, but... I actually enjoyed it. Just don't take anything in the book too seriously and go with it for what it is and have fun!

I have always been a bit leery of shape-shifter romances, it feels a bit like Furry fandom/bestiality. But this was actually a rather delightfully sweet frolic in the fantasy/romance genre and I wouldn't mind reading another book by this author.

Some books are junk food books, mere fun entertainment. This one is fluffy rainbow cotton candy with sprinkles and glitter. I recommend it to my fellow unicorns!

Who doesn’t want to read about 🦄Unicorns? And adorable ones at that! A baby 🦄unicorn🦄 is rescued from a wildfire at the book's start, so you're instantly hooked. This leads to lots and lots more 🦄unicorns! Yay! 🦄🦄

Besides the 🦄unicorns, there’s a story happening between (you guessed it…)a shifter 🦄unicorn and a wildlife animal rescuer. While this shifter immediately recognizes his mate, he has a major uphill battle to win the heart of his human. Similar to book 1, and yet even more frustrating, the hero tries to self-sacrifice himself in order to save his human mate (once again, eye roll) This guy is even dumber than the Griffin in book 1, because this self-important know-it-all doesn’t even realize he’s walking into a trap. Once again, like book 1, we’ve got our heroine swooping in to save her bone-headed mate.

With the lack of steamy heat (except the wildfire, lol), it’s shocking how much I really enjoyed this book. Despite my frustrations with the story arc & lack of smut, the characters are lovable and quirky and tease each other with the proper amount of love and ridicule as one would have towards a sibling. The more we delve into this series, the more committed we are to finding each shifters’ HEA. I keep saying ‘this is the last book I’m going to read from this series and yet I cannot help but dive into the next one. It doesn’t hurt that the epilogue sets the stage for the next book via huge cliffhanger. The ongoing demon/ thunderbird story doesn’t hurt either, as we become more invested in the story.

Another wildfire shifter bites the dust

This book did not disappoint. It contains humor, drama, suspense, love, sexual hotness, fun and wraps it all in a story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat wondering what will happen next. My favorite part has to be the story of Wystan helping his friend out by streaking around the school which is totally out of character for him but not out of character for his loyalty. When he said he panicked, I thought ok most people don't get naked when they panic. Blurting out that he was a virgin. Priceless. Calling his dad for sexual advise another classic moment. The struggle he goes through to try to prove to Candice that he's worth taking a risk for is something I think a whole lot of woman would love to have the type of devotion but so many do not even get close which is why we read these stories and dream and hope that some day we get that in our life. Flash who could not fall in love with a baby unicorn who can teleport. Melt me heart I want a Flash of my own! Thinking of people seeing hellhound as a big service dog cracked me up. I love the names that he calls everyone like Sun bitch... so funny. Looking forward to see what happens with Joe in the next book in this series. I just love all of the fire and rescue crew members.

An intricate world filled with intriguing characters

Book 2 in the Fire & Rescue Shifters: Wildfire Crew series, which is a spin-off of the original Fire & Rescue Shifters series, there is an underlying story arc carrying over from the first book, so I’d suggest you read the series in order.

The world building here is right on point and I love the setup for the series with shifters—and not your everyday animal shifters, but shifters whose other halves are some type of mythic creature—use their special talents in extraordinary situations. As an animal lover myself, I always look for storylines with animal lovers as main characters, so I really liked Candice as a veterinarian/animal rescue worker. As for Wystan, my heart was breaking for him when he tries and fails to heal. There’s plenty of heat between the two of them, even with Wystan’s special circumstances, while the conflict between their individual goals, the threat of the fire as well as more other worldly threats, plus the puzzle of the rescued baby unicorn all kept the pages turning in an action packed read.

Lots of emotion, plus plenty of suspense not to mention a few laughs in a story set in an intricate world filled with intriguing characters. Loving this series, and can’t wait to get Joe’s story! 5+ stars
