Her overall desire is to use her fiction catalog to help change at least one person’s non-fiction reality.
Mel this is the one! I loved this read so much! There were so many hilarious moments, as well as some heartbreaking ones as well. Covina grew up with some challenges. However, with her loving and supportive father and Grammie, she blossomed into a well-adjusted young woman. Even with that being said, she wanted to have some experiences to help her maturity and growth. Being that her overprotective, yet well-intentioned father, was always in the mix, she had to do it his way. While Covie is looking for a roommate, things get interesting.
Jasper is bout his money, family, and businesses. Love is not in the equation, like at all. However, when he meets his sister's roommate, something stirs in him, that he doesn't recognize. She is beautiful, and he needs to see what she is about.
These two were adorable as their friendship blossomed. Jasper was so caring and attentive with Covie and did not let her differences sway his feelings about her at all. He did not play about her, and anybody could get it. Covie was way more in tune with things than people gave her credit for. It was funny when she would read Jasper and didn't even realize it. 😂 With the help of her two besties Covie turned the page on her boring normal life, with Jasper by her side.
It is always some heifer in the cut, that can't take that L and move the hell on! Zora was miserable and wanted everyone to join her pity party. Welp... she f'd around and found out! Now she can dwell on all her bad decisions while sitting comfortably in the joint. Sorry, not sorry! 🤬
I was beside myself when everything went down, and Covie made that decision. 😢 This cannot be happening, right? Jasper was like bet, you think you can play with me, I'll show you. 😂 The back and forth quickly became exhausting, and I wondered how this would all be resolved. Thankfully it all came together, just as it should. Great read! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
4.5⭐️ Enjoyed this a lot. Growing up with a mother that taught Special Education and a family member on the spectrum, I will always have a special love for them. This author did a great job!!
Girls (on the spectrum) need love too! Especially those with a heart of gold like Covina.
This was such a cute story and felt like a breath of fresh air to read! 🥰🥰 I loved all the things that Covina finally got to experience after living a very sheltered life at the hands of a loving yet overprotective father. She is an adult in her own eyes however she will forever be viewed as Sheldon’s baby girl! As a parent I definitely empathized with his need to be papa bear and knowing some of the challenges she could potentially face heightened his anxiety even more.
As Covina decided she was ready for her next adult experience which was living alone, her and her father compromised on living arrangements that would make them both happy. Covina could have never predicted that her roommate’s brother would open her heart and mind to a love she was deserving of despite her disability and again I loved that for her!
🩶It was the ear plugs at the club for me! 🖤It was the matching pjs during girls night for me! 🩶It was their first date for me because can I come too 🥹🤎 🖤It was the shade Covie stayed throwing for me! 🩶It was both Sheldon and Jasper keeping that whistle on them in case it needed to blow for me 😏 🖤It was gammie for me because one thing you weren’t going to do was play with her baby 🤎
I’ve come to find out that these on the spectrum love stories are a personal favorite. Seeing them lower their walls and experience love through their eyes is so touching! Mel really shines with this topic in my opinion and she’s two for two for me!
I really enjoyed this book. The lengths he took to show his love, and the patience he practiced had me swooning. This was such a feel-good, smile-pulling, heart-warming book.
I wanted to be a fan so bad because the idea behind the book was good. The reality is, ppl w/ disorders can live a normal & happy life. But, the execution wasn’t my favorite. I felt Covie had child-like qualities that didn’t represent level one autism as much it could’ve. Either way, very cute love story.
Let me start by saying overall this was a sweet instalove with Autism rep in the heroine. And this cover?!? Gorgeous man! And while it was nice to see that love story in this book, it didn’t connect for me like other Mel Dau books have in the past. There was character growth on both sides and I appreciated reading that. I felt lost at times with the timeline of events jumping between characters, instead of just getting one point of view to carry the scene through. It’s not to say both main characters can’t give their view on an event, but it felt like the book had a lot of filler and took longer to progress. I think this was a sweet romance and I’m here for the autism rep but this story unfortunately wasn’t for me.
This was such a great read with hilarious moments all the way through! Jasper loved Covie exactly how she was, and honestly, that’s the kind of energy we all need 🩷
This was a really good book and even though I’ve read other books where the character(s) were on the spectrum, this one hit a little different. I really loved the time and effort Mel put into Covina as a character and I felt like Covie’s personality and attributes really aligned with someone on the spectrum.
Jasper was the true definition of a book boyfriend and wasn’t afraid to let you know how he was coming behind Covie. He was very patient and passionate about her.
There were a lot of time skips and when I’m reading a book, I want alll the details. Often times, they referred to things that I wish were written in details but it was an okay read.
This book is truly one of one. I loved the diversity in the fact that Covi was on the spectrum, yet Jasper is a true hood n*gga that doesn't give a f*ck. I was hollering, laughing, and covering my mouth while kicking my feet throughout this whole book. The banter was chef's kiss.
I loved how Covi's girls protected her and was not playing no games behind her. Covi was funny without even trying to be. The comment about Zara's whole outfit being $50 had me on the floor. She challenged Jasper in a way that he had never been challenged before, and it provided so much growth in him. Covi could dish it but did not like it when Jasper dished it back.
Covi is extremely smart yet, the balance of inexperience and her struggles truly made this book a must-read. Even the daddy had growth. An let me be clear if I was Covi's daddy, I would have been the same way. That girl put him through it, lol.
Okayyy, I feel like I am rambling, so I will stop, but it is because I just have so much to say. If you're thinking of reading this, and you most definitely should, please buddy read it because you're going to need someone to banter with for this one.
If I had to send this review up in a few words, they would absolutely be I loved it. I mean the innocent chemistry and understanding between Jasper and Covina just had me smiling the entire time. With Covie being on the spectrum life looked a little bit different for her and all she needed was a couple good people to help her evolve into an even better person than she was. Jasper was nothing but patient and carrying loving, and I loved it. Jasper and Covie were absolutely made for each other.
Loved this book. Everyone deserves a chance at love and Covina was able to experience it with Jasper. He did not care that she was on the spectrum, he still wanted to get to know her better. Covina was a sweetheart but she did not let people treat her any kind of way. I enjoyed there love story.
By this time ! Mel needs to put me on advanced readers list ! She never leaves any crumbs ! She leaves me on the edge of my seat ! And I can’t get to the follow up books fast enough
Ms. Mel Dau, you hit this one out of the park. This is an award-winning book. The storyline and the character development alone were superb. To read a book about an average man from around the way falling in love with a neurodivergent young woman was warming to the soul. The millisecond - Jasper's eyes landed on Covie he knew that she was going to be his forever. He also made sure no one disrespected her in any manner. When she got hurt in the mall incident I was hurting for Jasper for not being able to see her. Witnessing Covie making friends and living with her disease as a normal young woman was also refreshing. April and Kelsie became fast friends with her and taught her how to live as a young lady in her twenties. They also did not play about anyone trying to play in her face including Zora. Now Zora on the other hand I have to say she rightfully got was she deserved. She had no business acting and doing all she did to Jasper and Covie. However, love prevailed for Jasper and Covie through all the stirred-up foolery and dramatics. Jasper kept his word and "chose" Covie.
Ladies and gents this a magnificent read and you should indulge in it. You will fall in love with all the characters including Grammie. Ms. Mel Dau did her thing with this one. She put the pen to the paper! There is so much that happens between cover to cover and the plot will keep you engaged. Grab your copy today you will NOT be disappointed.
Lawd Covie got on my nerves and she couldn’t blame autism. She was playing games and she knew what was up. But Jasper got on my nerves too. He should’ve handled ol girl before. And Sheldon was over protective which was understandable
I must say I really loved this book. I don't think I caught the sex of the baby. Love me some Jasper. He was serious about his Covina. One thing, why skip over when she had sex for the first time. It was talked about a lot. So it should have been a focus. Great read
Too good! Standing ovation… so damn good and you talk about well written and executed in a chef’s manner with autistic representation I’m just floored! I want to read more of Mel Dau’s Catalogue 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I can’t stop cheesing
I enjoyed this book for the most part. I loved how our FMC was autistic. I've never read a romance featuring a black autistic main character. Seeing that representation was refreshing. I did like Covie, she was an unintentional comedian. Because she lacked social ques and a filter, her blunt nature made for plenty of hilarious moments. I also really liked Jasper. There was never any BS with him. He was very much a grown man who came correct when it came to Covie. I thought the two of them complemented each other perfectly and I loved how patient and accepting he was with her.
Covie venturing out and trying to make friends was also great to read about. I'm glad she found real sisterhood in April and Keslie. Again, for the most part I enjoyed this book but there were some things I didn't care for.
Firstly, the lack of sex. This is not the first Mel Dau book I've read. Normally she writes sex scenes but for whatever reason she chose not to in this book. How can you give detailed oral sex scenes but not any full length sex scenes?? I wasn't a fan of that at all. Secondly, the time skips. There was way too much time jumping in this book. A chapter would end and the next would be a week later, 2 weeks later, a month later etc etc like damn slow down. Why was everything moving so quickly.
Third, Covie's daddy was doing too damn much. At first he was cool but then he started doing the most. It seemed as though he was jealous of Jasper. I get he was protective of his daughter but he was overdoing it by a lot. Fourthly, the whole drama with Zora was dragged out too long. Clearly the chick had mental issues but it got to a point where she read like a cartoon villian and the drama became annoying. I'm glad she got what she deserved in the end though. Lastly, the third act breakup. I'm not gonna rehash for the 100th time why third act breakups are terrible, just know it was stupid and completely unneeded. Covie was working my nerves in this backhalf of the book.
The story wasn't perfect but it was enjoyable. I loved reading about this awkward black meeting her person and eventually making it to happily ever after.
This was so good! I loved the autism representation so much. Being that autism is so personal to me it’s so nice to see that.
Covie had me in knots. She is so funny and witty and smart! I loved how she was always ready to teach someone a lesson for underestimating her. My favorite thing about it.
Jasper *sigh* what a sweet man. He was hooked on her every word from chapter 1.
I also loved the friendships in this story. So sweet and accepting. The conflict was also good even tho it pissed me off lol
I learned more about autism and everything in this book. I didn’t like the breakup but I get why it was needed. I loved Covie and Jasper and I loved their relationship.
Zora was trash since I met her and I wish she wasn’t so delusional cause it was sad but Kelsie and April were real ones!
