What comfort can we have in Christ Himself but as He is clothed in His priestly garments, in His office of High Priest?
Nothing is more vital to a believer's comfort and sanctification than understanding the scope of the Lord's priestly office. Conversely, some struggle with sin, doubt, temptation, discouragement, or an accusing conscience because they fail to grasp the significance of Christ's priesthood. In Comfort and Holiness from Christ's Priestly Work , William Bridge reminds us that 'Christ's office as a priest is the great storehouse and supply of all the grace and comfort that we have on this side of heaven.'
Listen to this edifying book and see how Jesus' fourfold labor of satisfaction, intercession, offering gifts, and blessing His people works to sooth your weary soul and grow you in godliness.
An excellent compilation of sermons on Christ as our High Priest. “Say, ‘Come, oh my soul; either the Lord Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest, or else He is not. If he is not, what do these scriptures mean? If the Lord Jesus Christ is our High Priest, then surely He will be faithful and do all the work of the High Priest for my soul.’”
He explores how Christ’s priestly office, in particular, serves as the greatest source of comfort and motivation for a believer's holiness. He focuses on how Jesus, in his high priestly role, satisfies God’s wrath for our sins, intercedes effectually on our behalf, and serves as our advocate before the throne of God. The final two chapters highlight how Christ offers our obedience and service as sanctified gifts to the Father and pronounces blessings over His people. These two chapters explore lesser known aspects of His high priestly work; meditating on them was eye opening and a deep source of encouragement.
This is a fantastic book. I struggled to read it twice before, but after committing to read it I found myself loving Bridge’s style, and the truths in it started become clearer and clearer.
