When a wealthy family goes on a South African safari, a series of shocking murders rocks their exclusive compound in this unputdownable thriller from the acclaimed author of the “rollicking good fun” ( The Wall Street Journal ) The Main Character .

Odelia Babel, CEO of a sustainable fashion empire, is about to marry for the second time—to a man twenty-five years her junior. Asher Bach is the thirty-something designer of Odelia’s luxury clothing line, the darling of every high-fashion journalist, and madly in love with Odelia.

Eager to celebrate her nuptials with her nearest and dearest, Odelia invites her adult children, her daughter-in-law, her grandchild, and her best friend/assistant to an all-expenses-paid luxury safari at Leopard Sands in South Africa, the Babel family’s favorite vacation spot. In its soil, they have deep roots—and even deeper secrets.

It seems like the perfect trip, but not everyone is thrilled for the happy couple. Amid game drives in the bush and bonfires beneath the desert stars, tensions among the family threaten to boil over. And then, the morning after a big fight with her son Sam—and hours before the wedding—Odelia is found murdered. Sam is immediately the prime suspect, but he claims he has an ironclad alibi—he was with his twin sister, Bailey. Only Bailey is nowhere to be found…

As the heat roils, desperate poachers and ferocious animals lurk, and dark motives fester, it becomes clear that whoever killed Odelia isn’t quite finished yet, and the rest of the Babel family is their prey.

As soon as I read the synopsis for The Safari, I was instantly hooked. A luxury African safari setting with a wealthy, dysfunctional family? Yes, please! So I can’t tell you how happy I was to find that The White Lotus-esque premise lived up to my expectations by the time I reached the last page. From the exotic locale to the long-buried secrets, I was beyond immersed in the complex plot as I began suspecting each and every persona. Add in the multiple POVs, which gave me a round-robin view, and there was no question that I was spellbound for sure. Then again, I’m not all that surprised given how I’ve been an ardent admirer of both Ms. Goldis and her books from the very beginning of her literary journey.

Besides the stunning locked-room thriller vibe that came alive via some truly evocative descriptions, I was wowed by how the many twists and turns had an Agatha Christie-like feel. While this storyline was perhaps a bit more unhinged than any by the Queen of Crime, it nevertheless offered up a set of reveals that were downright jaw-dropping. And while it started off as a definite slow burn, that last third of the novel had me flying through the cliffhanger chapters with speed. You see, filled with scandalous behavior and some truly unreliable narrators, every single person in this book could’ve been behind the deadly deeds. A toxic family with gusto, they each had me eating out of their hands.

There was one thing that bugged me a bit, though, which was how it almost felt like kitchen sink was thrown at the wall in the last half of the novel. With secrets piled upon secrets as well as a whole host of schemes, it was sometimes hard to keep track of them all. Just the same, I found it fast-paced and addictive as well as shocking in the extreme. Altogether, I ignored my one hang up and just held on for dear life through this rollercoaster ride of suspense after I suspended all disbelief.

All said and done, despite the one minor hiccup, I eagerly raced through this murder mystery in under twenty-four hours. Thanks to plenty of deceitful betrayals, underhanded manipulations, and a delicious number of secrets, there was no guessing where this story was headed. And let me tell you, this crazy-a** family was something else. So if you love rich people behaving badly, epic family drama, and thorough backgrounds, this book is most definitely for you. After all, this well-to-do clan deserved everything they got and more. Plus, who doesn’t love being the fly on the wall while wealthy people get their due? Not this thriller lover, for one—and I’m betting neither will you. Rating of 4 stars.

A good story which I loved until the ending. (which was a bit far fetched, but not bad)

One of the things I would love to do would be to go on safari. However, being the scardy cat I am I am sure that a lion, leopard, or other predator would find fine dining with me as the main course.

However I was able to go to Leopard Sands through the words of Jaclyn Goldis.

Odelia Babel, the CEO of Circ, a fashion company has taken her family to her exclusive resort in South Africa to celebrate the upcoming marriage to Asher Bach, a much younger man. Odelia was a rock of strength wanting what she wanted which meant her three children have to work at Circ. Of course the children want to pursue their own interests and often clash with their mother. Asher on the other hand seems to be an ideal mate for Odelia and yet there is something not quite right about him.

Tensions run high as we learn more about the adult children and then the unexpected happens when Odelia is murdered. Who has done such an act and why does it seem as if the Babel family is being targeted?

The story finds it roots in the wonderful lush descriptions of the African bush with its exotic sights and many dangers. Death in this story comes in many forms and it seems like a perfect location to plan and execute the perfect murder.

Odelia Babel is 64 years old and the CEO of a fast fashion empire. She invites her three adult children, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, and her lifelong best friend, Gwen, to Leopard Sands, a luxury safari camp in South Africa, for her wedding to Asher, a man 25 years her junior. No one is pleased about the upcoming nuptials. Then, the night of the rehearsal dinner, Odelia is murdered.

Tensions run high and there is no shortage of suspects. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of secrets to be uncovered in this dysfunctional family, and it seems the killer has other plans…

If you enjoy stories of rich people behaving badly, there’s a lot of intrigue, arguing, bitterness, and bad behavior on full display.

I was hopeful for the exotic locale but found it lacking. Plus tarot cards, a plot device I didn’t care for. And lots of virtue signaling. Yeah I know homophobia, religious extremism, and fast fashion are bad. I don’t need to be hit over the head with it.

It took me to 50% before the story took off. I came close to DNF’ing multiple times. Also, with multiple narrators, each narrating in the first person, it required close attention and flipping back to remember whose chapter it was. Perhaps this would have worked better for me on audio with a full cast.

Unfortunately, there was a kitchen sink approach in the last third of the book with twists upon twists upon twists, that were eye-rolling and silly. The first twist was easily guessed once the reader is given important information. But we aren’t done yet! At 85% I thought the book was over (and it should have been). Literally everyone has to have a BIG DARK SECRET. This one requires a massive suspension of disbelief.

This wasn’t for me, but many others, including my reading buddy, Marialyce, enjoyed it, so do check out other reviews. If you love rich people behaving very badly, and OTT endings this one just might be for you.

What a great way to weave together the dangers of Africa and those of equally dramatic action within a family. A widow plans to remarry a much younger man. Her three adult children aren't thrilled. One's a quiet girl who tries to keep everyone calm. Another son is wildly inappropriate and bluntly repeats his anger of it. The third seems to be the prodigal son but has several flaws. Toss in all the staff at the safari, a best friend who came along on the trip and the wife of one son. When the matriarch is found dead, things go from disaster to last-call to stay alive. More murders. Secrets revealed. Anger rises to the surface in interesting places. The last 1/3 of the book was unputdownable for me. Great experience where the author truly immersed us in the setting.

As Odelia Babel, successful-CEO to a fashion empire, prepares to marry for the 2nd-time, she decides to take her family on luxurious vacation for the special day. The ultimate destination wedding weekend.

Her betrothed, Asher Bach, is decades her junior, much closer to her grown children's ages than her own, but nevertheless Odelia swears it's true love, and so does Asher.

They'll be staying at Leopard Sands in South Africa, a posh safari well-known to the family, as they've frequented it many times before. Even though it seems like a perfect trip, not everyone is excited for the soon-to-be newlyweds.

Attending the family event are Odelia's three adult children, Joshua, Sam and Bailey, her daughter-in-law, baby granddaughter and her assistant/best friend. In spite of the closeness of this group of people, there's a ton of tension simmering under the surface.

Sam and Odelia end up having an epic fight. Things are said that push the boundary further than ever before.

The following morning, a mere hours before the wedding ceremony, Odelia is found dead. Suspicion immediately falls on Sam. Everyone heard the fight. It was bad.

Sam swears it wasn't him. He has an alibi. He was with his sister, Bailey. At least that's what he claims. Bailey is nowhere to be found...

As the investigation starts, everyone is a suspect and the once peaceful Leopard Sands begins to feel menacing and claustrophobic. Even though there's literally endless land and space around them, this still managed to pull off a classic Locked Room Mystery feel that I enjoyed.

This is the 3rd-year in a row I've read a new release Thriller from Jaclyn Goldis, and The Safari is definitely my favorite. I was here for all the craziness, it got wild and the setting felt refreshing for the genre.

It's a dramatically-messy family drama set against a backdrop of beautiful South Africa. I loved the fly on the wall experience I got with this one. It was quite entertaining. It's a straight-up popcorn read, and I was invested.

I loved the set-up, and getting to know the family. The dynamics were messy from the start. I liked getting a front row seat to all that.

As it progresses, it starts to get a little manic, and I suspected everyone at one point or another. Maybe the baby did it? I honestly didn't know. Maybe they all did it. We've seen that happen before.

There were some areas, mainly involving Bailey, that meandered a bit, and sort of went a little out of focus, but that was brought around in the end and overall, I was pleased with her story arc.

Additionally, towards the end, it did get a little difficult to track. There were side characters, locals to the area, that took up larger roles and some of them, and their connections to the story, started to get a little convoluted.

Overall though, this was an entertaining read. I got through it so quickly and had a lot of fun with the wildly OTT-drama. You won't like a lot of characters in this story, but you may like watching them spiral.

Thank you to the publisher, Atria, for providing me with a copy to read and review. Each one of this author's releases have gotten stronger for me, and we love an upward trajectory. I can't wait for the next one!

Thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for access to this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

A wealthy businesswoman has found love again, and she decides to marry in South Africa with her family and friends surrounding her. Except that she is the only one who is happy, and when she is discovered dead, all fingers point to those she trusted most.

If you're looking for a hot mess of a dysfunctional family, you will find it here. Pure ruthlessness all the way. This wasn't a book I could read in one sitting because this family was CRAZY!! Usually, I have some empathy for someone in the story, but I cannot find myself an ally of anyone. The last section of the chapters was wild with a lot of twists, but it took a while (50 %+ mark) before I really felt invested in the outcome.

I do want to mention that this book wasn't even on my reading radar until I was sent a marketing email. I loved the location, as it was different than my other thriller settings( North America, Scandinavia or the UK).

If you are looking for a gripping, atmospheric thriller with multiple shady characters then look no further, The Safari is definitely the book for you!

The Safari was definitely an improvement on this author's previous release, The Main Character, but still not quite at the level of her debut novel, The Chateau, however when I read the synopsis of this one I was instantly intrigued. A South African safari wedding vacation, which inevitably turns into a murder investigation, is always going to be something I'm willing to give a read!!

The story unfolds through alternating perspectives from various members of the wedding party, and honestly, at one point or another, I suspected every single one of them—except the victim, of course. The unreliable narrator-energy was strong, and I was second-guessing my theories the entire time! I also really valued the glimpses into the family’s background, which shed light on the deep-rooted issues and helped explain the layers of dysfunction within the family dynamic - if you believe your family dynamic is bad, just wait until you read about the Babel's!! The immersive setting was a major highlight for me as well. The author captured the intensity of the safari environment so well that I could feel the heat radiating from the pages and the constant, lurking threat of apex predators. I don't believe I'm going to be vacationing at a safari retreat anytime soon after reading this!

I wasn’t a fan of the fact that the gay characters were framed as two of the most ethically compromised—it felt like a tired trope. Still, I can’t deny they brought a level of flair and intrigue that made them hard to look away from. Though the pacing dipped in a few spots, the final act was packed with twists that genuinely caught me off guard. Despite the slower moments, I came away really enjoying the journey. While it was not perfect, The Safari was an enjoyable experience and a novel I would recommend!

Even though one of this author's previous books didn’t quite land for me, I have no doubt she’s great at what she does when it comes to destination thrillers. I’ll definitely keep coming back for more.

“There are some things in life you just have to live with knowing you did.”

giphyt4a

The first error the author made was that in the very first few page she planted the obvious hint that would allow any well-minded mystery reader to put two and two together, especially when it's a locked room mystery and the choices of suspects are already in limited capacity. Very little room for guessing, there. 😒

The second grievance is that more than half of the plot is dedicated to rehashing the past and setting up character profiles and relationship dynamics gathered at Leopard Sands for the auspicious wedding. The rifts of hatred, the insecurities, the brewing tensions, the underlying current of resentment and suspicions prevalent during the final two days leading up to the moment of sixty-four year old Odelia's murder. 😮‍💨 The one in charge, the holder of the only opinion that matters, a woman - mind you - that the author works very hard to show in not so flattering a light, so it hardly feels like there is a real loss of her demise.

The third problem lay in the overarching emphasis on their Jewish customs and traditions, the parts of their religion that seemed to be too stressed upon, which in turn failed to have any real relevance to the narrative. Aside from only one real Hebrew reference (which despite my annoyance, was revealed well) that felt integral to the plot, every other bit overwhelmed the story, as if intent to teach readers of the practices, rather than feeling like it was meant to be addressed. It was stifling, especially when, to me, it bore no real context or fruition. 😔

“It always astounds me how animals lack all pretense—we see them in their best and worst moments, and they can only be one thing, have only one mode: authentic.”

The fourth concern is that with such a title, you would think The Safari would play more of a part, rather than one weak attempt at showcasing the animals' presence, only for it to lack the feel of the environment. 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️

The fifth annoyance, which pretty much lay down the law for making it an unsatisfying read was the appearance of a plotline that was not at all even in the cards, that literally was whipped out of thin air, simply to allow the plot to make sense. 😒

giphy-4

I mean, what the ---?? 🙄

How can you expect anyone to piece together the why when it's literally introduced in the eleventh hour? how can anyone surmise anything with even the possible obvious clues? it was so --- not annoying, but aggravating. 🤦🏻‍♀️

“And power derived from love—well, that is a whole other drug.”

The writing was nothing too special; I mean, it was fine, easy to read, despite the multiple povs and evasive maneuvers of keeping the reader guessing. The ending was unsatisfactory; too haphazard and the same gripe of having the villain S-P-E-L-L out their agenda, which makes me lose respect for it as a mystery. I can't even say that I was compelled to read, because I was only reading to just see which direction it was going. And then once that sudden twist made its appearance, all other twists neither surprised me nor whelmed me, because it just felt like it was creating the twists for the element of surprise. 😩

None of the characters were likeable; relatable, sure. I mean, what child does not feel the burden of living up to their parents' expectations? When haven't there been marriages harboring grudges and burying secrets? But, it did not make me care about their well-being, despite the hurdles they outwitted themselves out of. It lacked empathy and heart and real motivation of intent over their actions. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I honestly don't have anything positive to say about this. I’m trying, but I’m drawing a blank. 🫩

When you think about a Safari, I’m sure you’re thinking lush landscapes, exotic animals, and a once in a lifetime experience. After all, many of us never get to go on one in real life so reading about it in a book is fun. But what happens when humans and animals are both predators? That’s what you’ll find out when reading this book!

This murder mystery has a unique setting which is something I really appreciated. I can’t remember reading a book set in the South African safari, so this was a delight for me. On top of that, we have a murder mystery which is hard to figure out because it feels like EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER could be the culprit. All the narrators are unreliable, all are hiding big secrets, and each one could easily be the killer. For the most part, I enjoyed this. However, the guessing really did overthrow my overall enjoyment because it was SO MUCH. There’s a lot of drama, a lot of nasty characters, and the toxicity bleads through the pages. While it’s entertaining it does get on your nerves after a while (for me anyway). But overall, I think the book is good and that’s a personal preference. Would I still recommend it? Yes! I think many readers will love this one despite some of the things that annoyed me.

"When a wealthy family goes on a South African safari, a series of shocking murders rocks their exclusive compound in this unputdownable thriller from the acclaimed author of the “rollicking good fun” (The Wall Street Journal) The Main Character."

What a twisty, delicious ride! The Babel family is a cast of complicated characters that all have a bone to pick with their matriarch, fashion empire mogul, Odelia. The family travels to South Africa for her safari wedding to Asher Bach, 25 years younger. Tempers are short, and tensions flare in the African jungle. Odelia is found murdered just before the wedding. Sam, the youngest son, claims to have an alibi, but his twin sister Bailey is missing. The Babels are nervous about every jungle sound and the darkness. At any point, someone or something could be lurking, and one of them could become the next prey.

All of the characters, including the family and staff, are so well-developed. Not all of them are likable, but I think that adds to the tension. The luxury Safari setting is absolutely perfect in creating a delicious locked-room mystery. This is one of my favorite thrillers this year with perfect pacing and tension, gripping and propulsive as it comes to a shocking and satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend adding this to your TBR and getting transported to a deadly African safari. Enjoy the ride!🐘🦁🦓

Odelia is newly engaged to a man over two decades her junior and brings her family to their Safari resort to celebrate her impending marriage. Unbeknownst to her, it's the last place any of them will see her alive. Twists and turns follow to uncover who had it out for her and why.

*****

This was a genuinely difficult book to get through. The multiple view points of unreliable narrators should have been interesting, but they all were such unlikeable characters. We got constant diatribes about the issues with Aba and Ophelia to the point that the entire book was cycling around it endlessly. By the midway point, I had put the book down so many times out of boredom that I wasn't sure I could finish it. I also found the main killers voice going from confident and secure to almost manic and immature once they're uncovered, to be extremely odd and not fit the character.

Thankfully, the last 25% or so, the story picked up, and we had some mystery and intruige. However, it had layers and layers of secrets and twists that it almost felt nonsensical in their excess. Literally, every character had some deep, dark secret or quiet betrayal aside from one (two if you include an actual baby). It dragged the conclusion out to just be too much in all and pulled this book slightly under 3 stars for me.

If you like a more drawn out mystery and lots of mental diatribes, with surprises over and over, this one could work for you. It just wasn't for me!

The Safari brings us to South Africa, where life is dangerous if you are not familiar with it. The Babel family is, because they own a big resort and return there ever so often for holidays among the beautiful nature and the chance to see lots of interesting wild animals. This time, Odelia Babel brings her fiancée Asher and her children, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Odelia is the wealthy CEO of a big clothing company and all of them, except her son Sam, work for her. Not always by choice, it turns out, but Odelia is the kind of woman who can’t take no for an answer. She’s the widow of Aryeh Babal who started the company and made it a success, but she is turning it in something her children don’t like, each for their own reasons.
Joshua, the eldest, is married to Davina and they have a lovely baby girl, Ruby. Then come Sam and Baily, the twins. Also present are Asher, Odelia’s fiancée, and Gwen, her best and oldest friend. Throw in Violett, the manager of the estate, and Markus, the game keeper and you have, amidst raging storms and plenty of dangerous animals, a setting for… well, murder at least. Slowly we are introduced to them all and slowly we learn more and more about the secrets each of these people is hiding.

I found it a well-written, entertaining story with a good pace and some interesting characters – but more so, because of all the different (religious) backgrounds they have and what this means for the way they want to live their lives.

There are some big surprises and some small ones and the ending was satisfying.

The confluence of an unhappy family, combined with a superb setting and opportunity, forms the perfect conditions for murder. I loved being swept up in the Babels' world and in an unpredictable story full of questionable people, unforeseen twists, and deep dark secrets. Although a little difficult to remain anchored at first because of the multiple perspectives and because of the sensory overload (overly descriptive), as the land heated and the ironclad alibis stacked up, I discovered I was sucked into a great story and completely lost track of time.

I think I’ll shelve my dream of an African safari for the time being!

Odelia Babel, CEO of a fashion empire is about to marry for the second time. She invites her adult children, her daughter in law and grandchild and her best friend to an all expenses paid luxury safari at Leopard Sands in South Africa, the Babel Family's favourite vacation spot.
Not everyone is thrilled for the happy couple and Oldelia is found murdered just hours before the wedding.

Wow, I am honestly shocked at the low rating on this book, which I felt was a really close match to The Guest List. Do people really hate rich dysfunctional families that much? Tell me in comments!

I really enjoyed this destination thriller as it reminded me a lot of The Guest List. As a family gathers for a wedding, one member of the wedding party turns up dead, and many people at the site of the wedding, a South African safari resort, are potential suspects. A lot of family drama, many twists and turns and the welcome inclusion of the power dynamics of luxury tourism.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the setting. It was well written and exotic. A South African safari was the perfect backdrop for a murder mystery.
Unfortunately, everything outside of the setting was very lackluster. The characterization was thin, and there wasn't enough intrigue/mystery to keep me invested in the story.

I felt the same way about her previous book, The Chateau.

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I was immediately drawn in by the title and description of the book. A rich family on safari for the mom’s wedding to a much younger man and she’s found murdered the day of the wedding. Yes please! I love a good toxic family whodunnit. But this was a mess full of unrealistic and unlikeable characters. Entertaining but not my favorite.

The Safari by Jaclyn Goldis

Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for a complimentary copy of this novel! This reviews and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
On this South African safari, it’s not just the animals that are the hunter and the prey. Someone is hunting the humans and making them their prey. The wealthy Odelia Babel and her family are on their way to the exclusive luxurious Leopard Sands in South Africa to celebrate her nuptials to Asher Bach, 25 years younger than her. Her first husband died ten years ago. The group includes Joshua, her son with his wife and baby girl; Odelia’s twins Sam (male) and Bailey (female); and Gwen, Odelia’s longtime friend. On top if these people, there are longtime caretakers at the Leopard Sands. The only problem is....pretty much everyone in the family and also some of the caretakers all have secrets to hide and some are willing to kill to have their own way. Hours before Odelia and Asher are to tie the knot, Odelia is found murdered, with the main suspect being Sam. His only alibi is his twin sister Bailey, but she is nowhere to be found. Then Gwen goes missing too! Too many missing bodies. Someone isn’t who they say they are. Who is behind Odelia’s murder? While the African Safari poses numerous threats from wild animals and poachers, there is a threat far closer to home. Someone is hunting this family, and you won’t see it coming!!! I really enjoyed this novel. The first half is laid out in a way that each chapter gives background about how each family member, friends, and caretakers all have something against Odelia and a reason to kill her. The last half is where the action really begins! AVAILABLE May 20, 2025

A wedding brings the family together but secrets will break them apart.

A rich family gathers for their mother's new marriage. The wedding should be the next day and they have gathered to celebrate. Although, no one feels like celebrating - none of the kids are excited to have their mom marry someone closer to their age than hers.

I thought the mystery was good. The start was a nice build up. But I found it to be just a few too many POV - each new POV pulled and distracted as they each had their own emotions, ideas, and annoyances. I thought the twists were interesting and, even though I'd guessed a few. But I did find the ending to be a bit messy - there were just so many secrets and reveals. But it did wrap it all up nicely. A nice mystery mixed with family drama. I liked it!

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

This book made me feel like I was in the Wildest Dreams music video (iykyk!) The wealthy Bach family matriarch has been murdered the day before her wedding at a gorgeous South African safari resort. Everyone is keeping secrets and nothing is as it seems! The Safari is one TWISTY wild ride!

the safari by jaclyn goldis 🦒 when a wealthy family goes on a south african safari, a series of shocking murders rocks their exclusive compound.

gaahhh, this was SO entertaining 🧡 from exotic local guides to the long buried secrets within a convoluted family, I was beyond immersed in the complex plot.

🐘 almost every unreliable character had a POV yet it was never confusing to keep them apart. I began suspecting each and every character as the guilty party. you know that spiderman meme where they’re all pointing at one another… yeah, that was me.

a locked in thriller set amongst the savannah grasslands & vast desert sand that had me frothing at the mouth 🥩 we only got to go on one safari with these characters and while I loved it, I wish we would’ve experienced another. but that’s just the animal lover in me talking.

the earth is large enough for all to share, but mankind's heart is not large enough to care. 🐾 4 stars!

The Safari by Jaclin Goldis when the wealthy widow and owner of the Safari resort arrives to celebrate her upcoming wedding, to a much younger fashion designer Asher, who works for her company needless to say not everyone is happy. She has three kids older son Joshua who is married to Davina with Baby Ruby his sister Bailey and brother Sam who are twins. It seems no one in this group including the employees are fond of the majority of the family not only that they have many many many pivotal moments including more than one kidnapping more than one murder in a whole bunch of come to Jesus conversations. The story is like a rat king and I am not talking about the king of the rats I’m talking about the one where all the rats had their tails tied together and yet try to go in 100 directions. This is the most jumbled cluster crunch of a story and although I did enjoy it at the beginning mini POV’s doesn’t bother me it was just all the instances I thought the book was over and it wasn’t. usually when you have a mic drop moment it is a great way to end the story Drop the Mic and walk away but in this book there’s so many it loses its performance glamour. I would be lying if I didn’t say four most of the book I was enthralled with the narrative but want to go to the multiple endings I started losing interest because I just thought this is just way too much but I would still recommend it if you love a great thriller with absolutely dysfunctional people not only current day but in the past then you will probably like this book. When it comes to the author’s books I either love them or could live without them but I really don’t know where this one sits on those list.#NetGalley, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview, #JaclinGoldis, #TheSafari,

Like a luxury safari, Jaclyn Goldis’s enormously entertaining new novel takes readers on a thrilling ride through terrain as brutal as it is beautiful: an imperiled ecosystem of secrets, manipulation, and murder that will leave you breathless. With characters as richly realized as its sub-Saharan setting, The Safari is a transporting page-turner with surprises around every corner. I couldn’t put it down.

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed “The Main Character” by this author, so I was excited to read her next book. And this was such a great read!

First off, I love the multiple POVs and how they were utilized. Each character was fleshed out and became well-developed too. Every POV felt very unique, which is important in a book like this.

The setting was also very unique. I loved the safari setting and the South African culture sprinkled throughout the book. It was a real treat reading a book set in this particular setting.

Finally, the plot was well done and I loved the twists and turns! I honestly didn’t predict all of them, which made my reading experience that much better. I loved watching the mystery unfold and how everything slowly but surely came together.

If you’re looking for a slow-burn mystery set in a unique location, I can’t recommend this one enough!

“𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞’𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡.”

Jaclyn Goldis returns with a mystery set in the beauty and treachery of the South African wilderness.

The Babel family is gathering at their luxury safari resort, Leopard Sands, for the marriage of matriarch Odelia to her much younger fiancé, Asher, and no one except for the engaged couple is happy about it. Constant bickering and tension between Odelia and her children simmer until hours before the wedding, she is found murdered, and whoever did it isn’t through yet.

I love a wealthy family behaving badly mystery, and this delivers in spades. The constant sparing and friction between family members racks up the tension, leaving no shortage of suspects in Odelia’s murder. Goldis evocatively captures the majestic beauty of the South African wilderness, juxtaposing with the constant peril that also exists within nature, adding a lot of atmosphere to the closed-circle mystery. It cautiously makes me want to go on a safari someday! Goldis is clearly Agatha Christie inspired, and while Ordeal By Innocence is mentioned, I was also reminded of Appointment With Death, with its exotic location, dysfunctional family who suspect each other and live under their domineering matriarch’s shadow. The last half of the book flies, with lots of secrets are revealed, some truly scandalous. The story is a bit too descriptive in places with maybe a few too many twists, but the reveals are overall solid with well-placed clues, a few that I caught onto just before they were disclosed!

The Safari is an exotic mystery, filled with looming danger, secrets, and family drama, that has me looking forward to Goldis’ next book! Thank you to Atria and NetGalley for the ARC!

Wealthy Odelia Babel, the CEO of a sustainable fashion empire, is remarrying a much younger man. She has decided to have the celebration in South Africa at the luxury resort the family owns. In addition to the ceremony, a safari to view the wild animals in their natural habitat is on the agenda for her, her fiancé, best friend, and assistant and three grown children. One of her sons will also be accompanied by his wife and baby girl. The book includes multiple points-of-view, so setting the stage with the setting and getting to know all the characters means the first part of the story unfolds rather slowly.

When someone is killed, more and more secrets start to come out and the story really picks up. The showdown with the killer at the end is dramatic and thrilling. I like that there is a detailed epilogue to give closure to some of the outstanding plot points. The Safari is the first book I've read by this author. I was impressed by how skilled she was in smoothly combining family drama, details about safaris and South Africa, along with information about the Jewish faith. I enjoyed the book and would read more by this author.

Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for the advance review copy of the ebook. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Safari by Jaclyn Goldis. Thanks to @atriabooks for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Odelia Babel is celebrating her new marriage with her family at the South African safari resort. She is CEO of the family’s company and the matriarch. When she winds up murdered, every family member is suspect.

I loved the atmosphere of this thriller! It was so much fun to have a thriller that takes place in the safari. Not only do we have some misbehaving humans and an unknown murderer, but we have ruthless animals just outside the resort. I enjoyed the descriptions of the safari and the animals. This is not an easy and fluffy thriller. The language is well down and you need to really sit with it and absorb it. There are lots of twists and secrets from the past

“That’s what animals do, bring people together, and so does nature, especially this land that courses through our blood.”

The Safari comes out 5/20.

A captivating closed-room mystery set in South Africa at a safari lodge. A wealthy family comes to the lodge for the wedding of their mother to her much younger paramour. None of her three adult children are very happy about this, nor her best friend. So when she is found dead, we are not lacking for suspects. But is the killer finished?

I liked the way the story backtracks a couple days before the murder so we get to know each of these characters, one by one. Each and every one has a secret they are hiding, even some of the staff. Telling the story from all sorts of different povs did get a bit confusing at times though. Lots of plot twists, right up until the very end, kept the story interesting. I'd enjoy reading more of Goldis's mysteries.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an arc of this new mystery via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

This was the perfect binge-worthy destination thriller to cure my White Lotus hangover!
I absolutely love a luxe resort setting (the more isolated the better) for my summer thrillers, and The Safari takes place in a glamorous South African resort where the owners and their extended family have arrived for a wedding. But murder and missing guests crash the occasion and everyone seems to be a potential suspect. Family drama, hidden identities, decades of resentment, a billion dollar company at stake, and so many twists made this such a fun read, and I highly recommend thriller readers add this to their TBR.
