Millicent Abernathy is almost a spinster. At age 21, and in her 3rd season, she considers herself invisible. No one pays attention to her, no one notices she's around, people are unkind to her; she is the proverbial wallflower. Her mother has all but given up on Millicent's chances of finding a husband.
However, Millicent has not desired the attention of just any of the men on the marriage mart, she wants a specific one. One she can never have. For, she has been hopelessly in love with her best friend's brother since she was 8 years old.
Jacob Hawthorne is the 2nd son of the late Earl of Truxton. He is affable, charming, devastatingly handsome...and completely unaware that Millicent exists. Sure she is over at his family's house on almost a daily basis, as she and his sister, Belinda, are the best of friends...but, to Jacob, Millicent just blends into the woodwork. He's not even completely sure of her name.
Until, one evening, at a particularly trying ball, he decides to take a walk through the garden, and runs into a mystery woman in the darkness. A woman who is smart, funny...and completely in the shadows. They have a conversation that wins Jacob's interest, but she runs away without telling him who she is. He becomes determined to uncover her identity. What he finds out surprises him; not just because of who she is, but because of how she makes him feel.
Add to the mix a meddling, match-making butler; a scheming heiress who will do almost anything to make sure that Millicent does not get a happy ending; and a family that is as madcap as they are loyal, and you have this book.
This is the first published book for Adena Bailey and what a story it is!
Imagine falling in love at first sight at age 11 and maintaining a steadfast heart until the object of your affections finally notices you at age 21. Le sigh...
That's exactly what happens to Miss Millicent Abernathy. She has adored the kind golden second son, the Honorable Jacob Hawthorne forever. He never noticed her until one day - he did.
Malevolent forces align to snuff out their newly found love, but for a change something happens that rarely happens in the romance genre. People communicate. There is open and honest communication.
The villains of this piece are particularly vile and despicable. No redemption possible for either party.
I love the way Bailey's mind works and I look forward gleefully to her future works!
I very much enjoyed this book! It is a historical romance and seems very true to the time period (it's a particular pet peeve of mine to have inconsistencies in behavior/dress/speech in a historical novel). The plot was based more on outside forces of society keeping the lovers apart rather than their own internal conflicts or misunderstandings between the two people. The heroine starts off quite shy and rather quickly shifts to more confidence as her love grows. I would have liked to watch that development a little closer as a reader. I really enjoyed the side characters and now I find myself wondering what happened to the other siblings in the book! In addition, there was a somewhat dark twist that kept the book interesting. If you are looking for a fun, entertaining HEA story, try this one. I'd love to read more from this author.
