Named one of the Top Ten Best "New" Horror Authors by Horror Novel Reviews, award-winning novelist W. Potocki brings you fast-paced horror.
A monster proves a legend true.
Jen Nichols is living large and ready to enjoy the summer. She's riding the unemployment train when a chance encounter with Hillboro's newest resident alters her plans.
Jen insists she was attacked by a monster, but everyone, including the police, discount her claim--right up until a dead body surfaces. It's half-eaten and discarded in a ravine, and the first clue that something very evil is hungry.
A vandalized cemetery located hundreds of miles away holds the key to solving the mystery. The digging up of an unmarked grave awakened more than the creature thought to be at permanent rest. Who and what it is is shrouded in folklore, and only a mother still grieving over the loss of a child understands the implications. Someone needs to stop the murders, but it just might be too late.
There is something terrorizing Hillboro, bodies are found mutilated, half eaten and killed. Jen Nichols is certain there is something out there, not human committing these heinous murders. But no one believes her, not her boyfriend Phil or the Police.
The legend around Hillboro is there is a "monster" that can't be killed who is committing the crimes. Then a cemetery has been vandalize, a grave dug up, could there be a connection? One woman (Mary) seems to know the answers and she is determined to try her best to stop the killings and put this "creature" back to rest forever.
A well written fast paced horror story. I loved the plot, very original. I feel that those who love a good horror story will enjoy Trillingham.
When Jen is attacked in a mall parking lot, she insists that it isn't just an animal. Unfortunately, no one really believes her. No one except Mary, who knows exactly what attacked Jen... or rather, who. Its name is Trillingham, and it has a taste for human flesh.
Potocki has a penchant for writing characters who are fairly unlikable yet still compelling. Jen is a bit of an airhead, and she and her boyfriend seem to be made out of hormones... but somehow their relationship is completely believable. Mary comes off as that crazed lunatic character who knows the truth but no one believes, Jen's friends are all kinda assholes, the cops are incompetent - this is standard horror movie fare and it was quite easy to go along for the ride. Trillingham was a unique enough villain to make this interesting. On the one hand, he's a terrifying cannibal monster. On the other hand, you kinda want him to kill the other characters. A fun horror novel with moderate amounts of gore.
Overall the book is well-written, but there are a lot of dangling participles, which is a little annoying - but did not dampen my enjoyment of the book.
To Believe or "not" Believe "TRILLINGHAM" by Wendy Potocki Jen is unemployed and looking forward to the summer with Phil her boyfriend and her friends Ellen, Terry, Stuart and Frankie. She lost track of time in the mall and it was turning dark when she left. She hears noises in the parking lot while trying to find her car, something grabs at her ankles trying to pull her under a car. Jen screams and some teenagers heard her and ran to help, by the time they get to her the thing was gone. Jen believes it was someone, not a animal like the kids said it was. She tries to explain to Phil what happened and what she thinks she saw, he doesn't believe her, her friends don't either. Then people start missing and are found eaten to death, skin torn and bite marks not animal like. The town wants answers, so doesn't Jen. Is Trillingham a folklore or is there a cannibal in there town. Download to find out.
Ms. Potocki delivers nightmares served on a platter of prose. Her descriptions and metaphors immerse you in a thrilling story of urban myth come to town. The banter between the characters lends a sense of realism that brought the characters to life as modern 20-somethings living next door. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to sleep with the lights on....
*I received my copy at no cost to me courtesy of Ms Potocki. This has not influenced my review of her book. The opinions are my own.
There are two covers available for Trillingham, and neither really catch my eye. The graveyard is the more accurate presentation of the events happening in the book (having a monster waking up from the gave and all) but the photo itself looks a bit blurry and ordinary. Having the text font be a dark shade might have made it more visually eye-catching, or having a splash of color in the picture itself might have worked, such as an unnatural glow of some sorts. The author has written other books where the cover is far more eye-catching. This is unfortunately is not one of them.
Overall, the second half of Trillingham caught my attention more so than the first half. During the first half of the story, several people in the town were killed by Trillingham, and then the next scene will typically shift to Jen and her friends at lunch or a diner discussing either the news of the murder or about life in general. I think the main issue is that Jen herself is attacked by Trillingham in the beginning, but is not really connected to Trillingham again until the end. This might have been solved if Trillingham's point of view was more of a stalker, fixated on finding the one that got away. That would have added quite a bit of tension to the first half. And while Trillingham does eventually have that desire, again, it's not really towards the end that this occurs to him. And since Jen and her friends are not really invested in Trillingham's plot until the second half as a result, it was much harder to get invested in the first half for this reason.
However, things pick up in the second half as Jen is more involved with the monster and the idea of Trillingham itself is very inventive and terrifying. Protagonist Jen is likable enough, and both Jessie and Mary are standout characters. Both were aged females attempting to solve the problem of Trillingham, just in different ways. All of their scenes were vital to the story. My favorite character out of everyone had to be Mary, who had quite a bit of depth to her role.
Overall, some of the scenes in the first half could have been edited out to tighten up the story a bit. It does get more interesting in the second half.
Look out horror lovers! This one is for you! Especially if you love a little bit humor added to it.
What I liked about this story is that it's engaging. It kept me invested in the story, anxiously awaiting how everything played out. The humorous bits helped to diffuse the tension and added an extra little flair to the story, which I think was very well done and not too over the top.
I think this story could've been much longer without slowing down too much. Particularly at the end where everything went by very quick (or maybe I just read it too fast).
I have to say that I'm not much of a literary horror fan. I usually find them way too focused on specific elements with a slightly disjointed story (at least in my experience). However, this was well thought out with the multiple view points and I loved that everything is answered in this book with the possibility of more happening beyond the story, which is something I think a good horror does.
Though the elements of horror are there, it's not one of those intense read-with-the-lights-on type of books, but it has enough of that oomph that makes this read enjoyable.
This review will be featured on my site and Amazon. I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I'm still not sure after having read the story how TRILLINGHAM came to be, but he is a changed man..a monster. Evil and a killer,he is to be feared. He has a memory and uses his senses to track his victims. The police and most people do NOT believe in monsters so he or it , is able to elude capture. But someone from the past with a grudge of her own has not forgotten about Trillingham and works to destroy the EVIL ..PERMANENTLY. The book is a THRILLER you will enjoy if you are a fan of SUPERNATURAL HORROR. I RECOMMEND.
I loved this book. The plot is fast paced enough to keep you turning pages. The characters are likeable and believeable. I dont want to go into a lot of detail because i dont want to give away any spoilers, but Trillingham is different from the usual horror nove!. Ms Potocki has a great imagination and has come up with a twist on the usual that is unique. The backstory that explains Trillinghams origins is creative and believeable. Continuing my quest to read everything this author has written. I havent been disappointed yet!
A most in gauging story of horror and thrills, with a budding romance in the mix. An enchanting take of horror that grabs you until the end if it is truly the end is it? Grab your copy today and fine out!
Not sure if the writer spent too much time on the thesaurus.com page looking for synonyms for "said" or what. The whole thing reads like a 3rd grader testing out their weekly vocabulary list. It's painfully awkward.
