What a fun story of chocolate 🫕🍫 and murder! Millie Swiss gets caught up in a murder mystery when a chef gets poisoned and dropped dead after he ate her bonbon at a tasting event. If you have a sweet tooth, your mouth will be watering as you try to figure out who the murderer is. My favorite part was with the cat 🐈!
It's really a solid mystery and I didn't guess the murderer.
Chocolatier Millie Swiss is devastated when her marriage breaks up. She decides to start her life over in Paris. It’s always been a dream of hers to go there and open her own chocolate shop. She quickly learns that it’s not an easy thing to do.
She promotes her shop at a local food tasting event. She’s sure this will put her shop on the map. Unfortunately, a very well-known food critic will be there, and he’s known for his harsh reviews. He has been known to destroy many businesses with them. Millie fears she will get the same treatment.
When the food critic suddenly dies after eating one of her bonbons, Millie is the number one suspect. She must prove her innocence, or she’ll lose her business and her freedom.
This is the first book in the Millie Swiss Cozy Mystery series and it’s off to a great start. It’s always fun getting in on the ground floor of a series. Paris is the perfect setting. The characters are fun and interesting. Millie is a strong character and is determined to be a success against all odds.
The storyline kept me thinking of “whodunit”. It’s filled with humor, drama and a small hint of romance. Reading this book is a great way to spend a few hours. I enjoyed meeting Millie and her friends. I look forward for another visit to Paris and getting to know them even better.
The writing was predictable and had a lot of fluff despite it being a short book. Personally, wasn’t a huge fan of this one. Although, it did make me crave chocolate. 🍫😂
This was the worst narration I've heard. Female narrator was monotone with no emotion. I might as well have been listening to a textbook being read. DNF
A move to Paris and a career as a premier chocolatier will restart Amelia “Millie” Swiss's life after an acrimonious divorce. After ploughing all of her capital into the new business, she needs a rapid success. A place in a prestigious tasting event looks like the perfect venue for a boost, until one of the critics drops dead after eating her bonbons. Now with the threat of incarceration hanging over her head, and no one wanting to touch her sweet treats, Millie must track down the true murderer to save her name and her freedom.
To say this character is naive is akin to saying there's a bit of water going over the Niagara Falls. She squanders her divorce payout (700,000USD) without taking direction from a financial advisor, leaving her skint. She rushes headlong into situation after situation where she is in very real peril. And, perhaps, worst of all, her backup plan is to scrape up enough money for a return ticket to the USA.
There was so much content in this story that seemed unbelievable. I was suspending my disbelief right, left and centre. Bonbon Betrayal could have been a decent cosy, but the lack of reality hindered it greatly.
This book was kind of short and kind of sweet (about a candy maker!). Millie is a nice person and a very good chocolate candy maker - something she loves to do. She had a job she loved in New York (I think that's where it starts) making candy in a small shop, but things happened and it had to shut down. Other things also happened in her life and she ends up moving to Paris, where her mother's family lived. She stays with her grandmother a bit and - I don't want to say too much, but it involves murder, of course, and a handsome policeman, of course. It's a nice story and I like Millie and I like Paris - so who can complain!
I really enjoyed this story which had me gripped as we followed the up's and downs of Millie Swiss. The setting of Paris provided a good backdrop to the chocolate flavoured plot! As the story progressed I found it hard to put down and was wanting to bring the murderer out into the open, but who was it? Millie applied intuition, logic and humour in her quest, and finally nailed the culprit. A possible romance with the detective provided the sub plot, but with an ex husband looming in the background it will make for interesting reading, so looking forward to the next instalment! Great.
Bonbon Betrayal by Fiona Grace is a great start to the Milly Swiss series. Milly, a chocolatier in Sweetman’s Candy Shop, discovers her husband is cheating on her AND he is responsible for her store’s closing. He files for divorce. She is alone and jobless. She decides to follow her old dream of opening a chocolate shop in Paris, so off she goes to France. When she gets there, she be comes embroiled in a murder mystery that affects her personally. Danger, chocolate bonbons, and a cat. Add a very handsome French police detective to the mix and you have a recipe for another great series from Fiona Grace.
Of course the setting was gorgeous. The little courtyard was just beautiful.
I also liked Millie. She was sweet and embraced her new life in Paris.
It is so very true that people when travelling, say they’re Australian. Maybe they should learn a thing or two from us rather than lying or just be better politer themselves when visiting a new country.
I loved the references to food. I mean who wouldn’t? I’m not a cat lover but Ruelle grew on me although I didn’t like the fact that he was allowed in the back room yuck!
It was a fun story that didn’t require too much brain power to read.
The book was certainly not Fiona Grace's best, but the AUDIOBOOK was terrible! The narrator had to be AI. And really bad AI. If it wasn't, this voice over artist should never be hired again. No emotion or inflection of dialogue, mis-pronunciations. Argh. Was painful to get thru.
Is this author just slamming books out? So much of the plot was not thought thru, and the actions of main character were implausible. Fiona, you can do better!
Fiona Grace does it again! A new series that shows what a well rounded author she is.
I have read many of Fiona Grace's books and this one did not disappoint. Spunky characters, and a good flow. If you pay attention, it has a very good clue early on. Sets you on track, but does not give the ending away. Can't wait to start the next one.
Sweet! What a delectable murder mystery if that is possible. This was a very smooth read with unique interests and oddly cheesy, but it had a good plot. (You'll understand the pun if you read the book.)
I enjoyed each little eccentric tidbits that was thrown in giving more depth to the character's personalities.
Every series I have read by this author has been very good and this story was no exception. The characters are vivid and engaging, the plot is easily followed, and the premise is finding out how and why the dreaded food critic was killed. The answers were hard won and not easily found. I most assuredly recommend this story.
This was a lovely cozy mystery full of quirky characters and beautiful descriptions of Paris. There were supportive employers and roommates, irascible shop neighbors, a very handsome detective, a cheating husband and even a loveable cat. If you like cozy mysteries you will love this.
Chocolate Chef Millie relocates to Paris; opening her Chocolate shop - a dream come true! She’s invited to a famous food judging event! How exciting & exacting! However, the most famous and discerning critic in Paris is poisoned! Millie is the #1 suspect; and must find the killer to save her reputation and her shop! Can she find the killer in time?
With everything going wrong in her life, Millie decides to move to Paris and open a chocolate shop. She spends every penny she has, then circumstances turn against her quickly. It appears that she’ll be out of business before business even has a chance to take off.
There is much in this book that is just another mystery, but it is a little better than average.
Very cute, cozy read. This is the first of the Millie Swiss books and I can’t wait for more. The characters were endearing, and the mystery was fun to follow. I will be seeking out more of Fiona Grace’s books to read.
Fast moving story of determination when everything was against her. Millie moves to Paris where good fortune is followed by disaster, but changes come rapidly. Good cliffhanger ending tempting one to read the next book.
Millie is a likable, though gullible, character who believes the best in people but learns a bit of caution from back-to-back betrayals. A somewhat predictable whodunnit with a‘ follow your dream’ twist.
Very fun read; I can see the characters and scenes
Very fun read.. I love this author. I can actually see what she writes... like a painting that draws you in and become part of the scene. Until the next story..
At first I thought I might not care for this book. But the more I read, the harder it was to put down. Loved the characters and the twists to find the murderer. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
A very enjoyable story. Enough romance to be interesting, without the "OMG I fell for him the second I saw him" vibe. Mostly believable story line; though I wonder how an American in France fares with a chocolate shop, I recognize that's my perspective and may not be real. I wish the Claudette character were clearer, but I'd bet that follows in subsequent books. I'm also interested in how quickly Millie sends Jack away when he shows up, so I may have to go buy the second book. I got this one free from one of the free Kindle book sites.
A cheating husband, Paris, and a Murder Mystery in one?
I couldn't put this book down. Now looking at the next to continue with the story. I would recommend this to anyone that likes love stories mixed with mysteries. You won't be disappointed!
A lively wamhearted cozy mystery with an alley cat, divorce, murder and Paris providing tension and delightful humor . A great starting over story . Well drawn characters.
A bad divorce, running away to set up a chocolate shop in Paris - but a critic dies shortly after eating one of her chocolates. Her store is being ruined before it really started.
I read many cozy mysteries. This one is at the very top. No ditzy heroine. It kept me puzzling until the very end. Plus, salted caramel is my favorite - in cakes, in coffee, and in chocolates! 0:-)
