Crenshaw Kings #4

Your Ex Ain't Me

Rate this book
Presley Evans has been labeled as promiscuous ever since she was a teenager and it has unfortunately followed her into adulthood. Being painted as someone she isn't, for as long as she can remember, has taken a toll on the young beauty, numbing her whole being. Couple that with the hurtful secrets she's harboring from the world, no one would blame her for her desensitized attitude. But when she meets a handsome NFL player who offers her an arrangement she can't turn down, and one that would ignite the spark she's been missing for so long, Presley can't help but to oblige. She learns quickly though, that there are still pieces left of her heart that can be broken and he'll be the one to do it.

Shakur Compton, the young, good-looking, rich, and well-known wide receiver of the Los Angeles Gremlins is on top of the world. He's got everything a man his age could ask for, including a beautiful woman by his side. The fact that she used to belong to his older brother, and that his close-knit family can't seem to accept her, are issues he feels are minuscule in the grand scheme of things. Life is good.

But when the two learn of some life-altering news, the foundation of their relationship begins to crack and bleed in more ways than one. Shakur is unsure of who to trust after some startling information comes to light, all the while having to juggle several moving parts in his life. It becomes not only a lot for the young footballer, but for wifey by his side as well.

Teyaira Harper has been unlucky in love ever since she laid eyes on Lequay Compton. Having bet everything on him, she was devastated to learn that she was never a part of his game plan. But when his younger brother Shakur swooped in to save the day, she couldn't have been happier having finally run into a man who valued the woman she's always portrayed herself to be. Right then and there, she vowed to protect this new love at all costs. What she didn't count on though, was that sometimes relationships are more than exotic trips, intimacy, and shopping sprees. There can also be trials, tribulations and tests. And when faced with the ultimate trial, Teyaira begins to lose her footing in a once stable union. However this time, she promises not to go down without a fight.

In this love story saturated with secrets, lies, and betrayals, these lovers learn that some of the greatest loves can come from the strangest places, while others were never meant to bloom at all.

3.4 ⭐️ To be honest, I was never a fan of the plot with Shakur and Teyaira. We should have parted ways with her in book three; I find the whole thing pointless. This was a friend with benefits to lovers between Presley and Shakur. Although I believed their connection to be genuine between the two despite a baby being involved, Shakur allowed Teyaira a lot of leeway. It was meant to demonstrate Shakur's character, that he loves people based on his own opinions, yet he missed the warning signs so badly. In the shadows, Presley is dealing with a garbage mother and a horrible stepfather; all she ever wanted was to be a chef and take care of her son. Beyond delusional, Teyaira's insecurities took over and it got to a point it was draining. She fooled herself into thinking Shakur wouldn't ultimately catch on to her ruse since he was younger than her. From my perspective, it took too long before she was eventually put in the dirt. We did see Shakur's maturation and his handling of his newfound fatherhood while simultaneously caring for Presley's son. It was good to see that Presley and Shakur were so open with one another. More and more of the Compton men's personalities emerge as the story progresses. I'm ready for Bashar's book next since I know it'll be crazy.

R.I.T (Rest in Turmoil) 🪦 💐 to Ms. delulu herself🫠! What a ride Shakur, Teyaira and Presley took us on.

If you’ve been following the series then we already knew it would be a chance that we would have to endure Teyaira in all her toxic glory in this book and to say the bish was holding on for dear life goes without saying! Shakur’s age was definitely showing in this book and while I admire the whole “seeing the good in people” mindset, LaQuay needed to whoop his 🍑 one good time for violating the bro code! It should not have taken Teyaira’s crazy coat coming off for him to realize that he had no business even entertaining her from the beginning!

Aside from this glaring grievance, I enjoyed this story! I was curious to see how Shvonne would develop this story without me being completely disgusted by Shakur and Teyaira and she did a really good job! Despite knowing who Teyaira was at the core, I found myself wondering 🤔 can this really work between them and for a teeny tiny moment my stomach didn’t turn inside out at the idea of them 😂😂. The way their relationship was developed had me not completely side eyeing Shvonne for even giving us this storyline.

Presley had a reputation of being the industry heaux thanks to her stepfather and despite being the exact opposite, no one took her seriously from a relationship perspective. Settling on a fk buddy situationship, Shakur and Presley embraced their chemistry inside of the bedroom but that was as far as he was willing to take it….. or so he thought 😏

I’m trying to keep up with all of these Compton men and their babies because a few have definitely slipped through the cracks! I’m looking forward to Bashir and Cemone’s stories and can’t wait to see what Nixi’s crazy 🍑 got up her sleeve!

P.S. please leave Devonte, Kyle or whatever name he goes by these days out on the remaining storylines! Prime is the only daddy we acknowledge

While Shakur appeared mature for his age he was naïve. I still could not understand his relationship with Tey at all. He had to keep convincing himself he wanted her knowing she was still in love with his brother. The amount of flags he ignored about her 😒😒. Presley still dealing with the trauma from her youth is doing what she had to do to survive for her and her son. Virgil and Tey got exactly what they deserved but her momma should have too… fck her too. I can’t wait for Cemone book but I’m pissed cause I want Bashar book especially with that ending 😒😩.

The mess continues! 🤭

Whew, Shakur had me so concerned coming into this book! His being an empath and wanting to see the best in people almost got him caught up. At the end of book 3, we saw him and Teiyara may have been a thing, but as we enter book 4 here comes the beautiful Presley! Presley took Shakur by storm and because of the reputation she had he played his feelings to the left. Presley not speaking up and telling her truth was so understandable and if I were her I would have a friend with benefits too with someone like Shakur. Now you may wonder how Teiyara fits into this and let me say it’s like sticking a square block into a circular hole 🥴! A mess! So much unfolds once Shakur decides on who to be his girlfriend. A wild ride but let me say this Presley was not going! She was not playing number 2 to anyone no matter the situation and I loved that! Shakur had to choose and everyone had to deal with that decision, and some could handle it. In the end, we got the couple we deserved! No spoilers here! lol also so many Easter eggs with the other brothers! I know Bashar is the next book and the way this book ended I'm low-key surprised! I also have a theory Bashar will end up with Bambi and that his daughter isn't his 🤫. I'll be waiting to see what happens in the next book! Also if Cemone really has all these possible kids lol.

I nearly threw my Kindle several times while reading this book. Shakur definitely showed his age; I understand he wants to see the best in people, but he had no business entertaining that girl in the first place—there were so many red flags.

Teyaira, Ms. Delulu herself, was a complete nutcase.

As for Presley, my heart went out to her. She was dealt a bad hand early on in life. Her mother really needed to face some consequences as well.
Virgil got exactly what he deserved.

3.75⭐️ "When was the last time you seen friends with benefits turned baby mama-baby daddy and low-key enemies fall in love?" Presley + Shakur . Loved them together!

🚨RANT with spoilers🚨

Whole book was a clusterf*ck. Because WHAT WAS THE REASON for keeping Teyaira ass around for that long?!?!?! She should have never been allowed to come back into the Compton household. The "brother hopping" didn't really bother me because ok you moved on & found love with a brother. Cool, but that wasn't the case. Teyaira ol delusional ass was still checking for Lequay! & that's why Scotland whooped her ass lmaoooo loved that part! Shakur was being dumb about that whole situation.

Learning early on about Presley's family dynamic was heartbreaking. To have to be around your abuser is so unsettling. Her mom needed to face some sort of consequence as well. Trash mom all around. Would've never had my kids around her ass.

My least favorite

The story this time was my least favorite. I wish folks would stop with the thirsty thot storyline. I did not like Teyaira, and the six million chances she was given to do the right thing. Shakur did not shake my fancy either. None of the folks in this three sided relationship clicked for me. Presley was nuts to take a double dipped back, when she chose Shakur. This one was meh for me. 3.0 stars.

Teyaria annoyed the fuck out of me in this book and love letters of a gangsta, my thought why would you fuck your brothers old bitch 😭😭 if she wasn’t his wife for a reason then why would you fuck with her 😃 dumbass

But I loved all the couples from this book and another books🥹

Initial thoughts: This series has been my introduction to this author and I’ll definitely read more. Maybe, I enjoy reading series about brothers because I’m invested at this point. Now… should Tey had made it past book 3? Absolutely not. Let us alone making me suffer through so many chapters with her in it lol. Nobody can tell me she didn’t have some sort of mental illness or something. How many times did she had to get bipped in the head figuratively and literally?

Anywho, I loved Presley. Very mature in my opinion. I really hated the people she was surrounded by and I will NEVER understand those types of parents/mothers. I related heavily. I thought it was going to be unbeatable dealing with Shakur and this insane devotion to Tey, but surprisingly it wasn’t too bad. I had read Lisara and Prime’s story a while ago, so the reminders about that story were helpful.

I’m excited to read Bashar’s story, because I’ve never understood the hold that girl has on him. I know there is a lot of backstory. Surprisingly, I’m really ready to read about Cemone as well. A bonafide fool, lol. Anyway, definitely a recommend from me

Listened on Libby. Shvonne knows how to get us readers going. I love the povs and the pacing. She don’t waste any time getting to the drama and meat of things.

I enjoyed Shakur’s character. He didn’t mind keeping it real but i just wish he didn’t deal with that nut job. That girl was giving too many chances and just couldn’t see she was the problem. I’m glad shvonne handled that 😂. All in all Shakur was level headed, sweet with a touch of a temper good hearted guy.

Now Presley on the other hand was the star of the book for me. Babygirl dealt with so much but got through it with her head held high. She just wanted to do good by and her babies. She wasn’t no punk and i loved that she enjoyed cooking. We could have got more scenes like that.

Oh yea the mothers in here (not Mrs. Compton) are pure trash.

I love this book too this is was so cute. I’m glad Tey ass gone I was tired of her fr. I loved the relationship with Presley and Shakur and how Shakur was ready to take the father role with Presley other son (idk how to spell his name) Shakur was a genuine person for giving Tey another chance and for caring about Presley even after knowing her image.

The only thing I don’t like about the books is the pregnancy and the kids. Like don’t get me wrong I love the kids it’s a beautiful thing but it seems every book so far somebody is pregnant or already has the kids. I’m not use to it most of the books I read is the kids come in the epilogue or if it’s single parents but regardless of that I still love these books.

I truly wished I looked before I started this series because now when the next book comes out I’m not even sure I’m gonna be interested in reading it. I really wanna know about Basher (however you spell his name) and his crazy toxic ass gf I wanna know if he leave her ass but idk if my feelings would be the same after it comes out.

This perfectly titled story gave what it was supposed to. Oops baby, Crazy Ex, Unalivings, Pettiness, and all the drama I could handle. One thing Shvonne does well is keep readers guessing on how things will come together in a book. In this one, i questioned Virgil and Teyaira’s character’s so much because they both did the unthinkable and wouldn’t own up to their shenanigans. I loved everything about Presley; I hated what her mother and “stepfather” did to her. I will say, I think behind Prime, Shakur is my favorite- idk, something about his character just worked well for me- even with his poor choice in women, lol!. That says a lot about Shvonne’s writing. 🥹I enjoyed this one and I already know the next book is going to have me on my toes.

BYEEEE BIRD BRAIN!!!!!!!

I WAS NOTTTTTT a fan of Shakur’s in the beginning, but dammit if I didn’t end the book liking him! He let that clown 🤡 a** girl Teyaria get away with TOOOOO much on the beginning. However, the way he FINALLY handled business behind Presley 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾!

I like Presley a lot, & she had it ROUGH!!! She came out on top in the end though despite having some trash people around her!

Ohhhhhh how I rejoiced when Teyaria & that pedo was up OUTTA HERE! I screamed at this book so much behind Teyaria, “like GIRLLLLLLLLLL!!! You ain’t hear that man when he said he ain’t want your ASSSSSSSS!!!?” Anyway, I enjoyed this book, very much!

Now lemme go see what Bashar & crazy a** Nixi got going on!

Good asf!

Shvonne did it again! I had no idea how she was going to make me like Shakur after what he did in the last book, but she changed my mind. These Compton men are best and I just want to be invited to the cookout! Teriyaki was probably the most insane girlfriend I’ve ever read about lol. I’m ready for the next book to see what the other insane chick is up to.

WHEW

I almost threw my Kindle several times. Shakur and Presley….loved them. I did ask if Shakur was smart several times, he wasn’t making good decisions. Presley gave so much grace to people who didn’t deserve. It’s fuck her mama FOREVER. Teyaira…..her presence caused a visceral reaction. Virgil, got off too easy in my opinion. Definitely wanted him to suffer more. I’m having a good time with each story, diving into Bashar IMMEDIATELY

Ms Shvonne Latrice we gonna fight. Because why oh why did Teyaira live that long? Why did she even get to be in a relationship with a Compton man? I had this book in my library since it went live. I was hesitant to read it because Teyaira, like why?

I hated this girl with everything in me.

Scottie and Lequay hold the number one spot as far as the Crenshaw Kings. but let me get back to this book.

Shakur decides to be in a relationship with his brother's jump off Teyaira. After she was the most trifling, childish, delusional person chasing after his brother. His brother. I couldn't wrap my brain around it. This girl was around your family for I don't remember how many years and she never looked twice at you. She was determined to make Lequay her man. Teyaira always had something slick to say about Scottie and was always in their business. But yet Shakur made her his girl. ewww.

Which had me side eying Shakur for the whole book. He stayed with Teyaira for way too long and then jumps in a relationship with Presley and all of sudden he in love? Nigga what.

Now Presley- I had mixed feelings about her. She assaulted by her stepfather, her mother didn't believe her and then she ended up pregnant. There is no way I would have been able to have that baby. But her mother was trash, her stepfather should burn in hell ( I know they not real, shut up)
So they made her out to be the hoe and she had to be an escort to make money. I get it, but I would have made Shakur gravel a little more.

I give it to Ms. Latrice because even though I didn't like these people, the book had me feel something.

But you know who these two stars are for.....Scotland Compton!! Scotland stood on business. She was not playing with Teyaira and she gave her the ass whooping she deserved.

Shakur and Presley’s story had me all in my feelings.
I wanted to wrap Presley in the biggest hug. She went through way more than anyone ever should. Her mama? Absolutely terrible. And that so-called stepfather? A straight-up monster who took way too long to face the consequences.
Shakur seriously tested my patience with how long he held on to Teyaira. Like, why would you even entertain your brother’s leftover drama? I loved how the brothers clowned him for that cause it was well deserved!
It was great to see Lisara and Scotland still holding it down as the queens they are.

In order… Prime, Lequay, Khari, Shakur (As much as I want to put Shakur before Khari I can’t…he gets points taking away from being with Teyaira)

I was pissed at Shakur for being silly enough to even fool with Teyaira crazy ass to be him with. Teyaira was a complete lunatic just as her mama way for egging her own. She’s the reason her damn kid is dead!!! Presley that poor baby was a sweet heart and I love that she found her happy ever after when all she had to endure. Scotland is my girl lol I love how she beat the sleeves off Teyaira!! Had her looking like Martin lol. Overall I enjoyed the book. I do still hate that all these women are damsels in distress though. Especially for this to be a series of 7 books or so. Like why are all the women so abused .

I was ready to jump in this book and throw hands, thankfully Scotland came through and did what needed to be done, iykyk 😂 that scene was hilarious Teyaira was so delusional.

Presley I love that when she stood on business, homie just walked away and Shakur stepped up as the man Prime raised him to be.
Shakur is such a lover boy, just a fine, rich, teddy bear 🥰😘❤️🫶🏾
I love that the empath found someone that truly deserved his love and respect.
I need a copy of Presley’s cookbook!

Umm so is Devante gon pop up in any of the siblings other books, cause I got questions.
This series is urban contemporary romance (to me) and I love it here in LA🫶🏾❤️🤣🥰

Shakur Shakur Shakur

Your Ex Ain’t Me (Crenshaw Kings Book 4) by Shvonne Latrice is about Los Angeles Gremlins quarterback Shakur Compton. After reading my husband Lequay’s story, I could hardly wait to read Shakur’s (the anticipation was real). As soon as Shvonne said it was live, I immediately dove in. I needed to see what was going through Shakur’s mind, why in the world he would even look Teyaira’s way. I mean yes, she’s cute and ambitious career wise but she was his older brother’s friend with benefits that stayed trying to get chose! Shakur is way too handsome and successful to be anyone’s second choice! 🗣️🗣️ Shakur himself has a friend with benefits in the name of Presley Evans, too bad she’s been around the league 👀 so Shakur has written her off. Shakur I have a bone to pick with you; how you can write off a “jersey chaser” but not a brother f-er? 🧐 That’s crazy to me! I went into the book not liking Teyaira and that never changed. I thought she was a lot last go round but she took it up a notch with her shenanigans! That girl is absolutely bonkers and you can count on her to shenan again and again! Shakur is a cinnamon roll character, he really set himself up trying to save Teyaira. Presley is such a sweetheart, but damn she’s dealt a bad hand from the jump with a neglectful mom (who I don’t forgive, she can burn in hell tbh) and the stepfather from hell. However, it doesn’t stop her from being a great mom and amazing chef. Her pork chops had the fam in a chokehold 🤣 This book is love triangle adjacent. You’ll get 3 POV’s, which gives good insight on all the moving pieces. I only wish that once the choice was made I could have spent more time with the couple. It was awesome seeing the St. Thomas/Compton family again. I love that we get to know the brothers personalities more each book, they were cracking me up. This was another great addition to the series, I can’t wait for Bashar’s book!

P.s. I tried not to give anything away 🤐

Cw ~ mentions molestation, neglectful parent and murder
