Gifted with meta-human powers in a world full of capes and villains, Tori Rivas kept away from the limelight, preferring to work as a thief in the shadows. But when she's captured trying to rob a vault that belongs to a secret guild of villains, she's offered a hard prove she has what it takes to join them or be eliminated.
Apprenticed to one of the world's most powerful (and supposedly dead) villains, she is thrust into a strange world where the lines that divide superheroes and criminals are more complex than they seem. The education of a villain is not an easy one, and Tori will have to learn quickly if she wants to survive. On top of the peril she faces from her own teacher, there are also the capes and fellow apprentices to worry about, to say nothing of having to keep up a civilian cover.
Most dangerous of all, though, are those who loathe the guild's very existence. Old grudges mean some are willing to go to any length to see the guild turned to ash, along with each one of its members. Even the lowly apprentices.
Very interesting premise: a world with superheroes and supervillains. The supervillains have a league to police themselves. Why? They don't want the superheroes going on an all-out war against them. That could destroy cities. So they kill people who don't adhere to their code.
The most powerful supervillain is Ivan Gearhardt who's in charge of killing those who won't obey the code. He is given a new villain to mentor, a Tori Rivas, who has elemental fire power and is a genius inventor.
She goes through her apprenticeship always under threat of death from him--but she also lives in his house. A surprising friendship springs up between the young and old villain.
It's fun to see Tori progress in her skills. Then war between the heroes and villains breaks out and everyone's life is in danger.
I struggled to get into this book. Then in the last 40% the plot started coming together and it was really enjoyable. Characters finally made sense and I understood the world we were living the in.
I picked it because of having enjoyed every Drew Hayes book. it's a long listen.
