It’s 1956 and the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein are having their annual quiche breakfast. Will they be able to keep their cool when Communists threaten their idyllic town?
Although it would almost HAVE to play better than it reads, the title is about the funniest thing in the show. It gets marginally better as it goes along, and one sight gag towards the end might be worth seeing - but I'd hate to have to sit through the rest of this mess to get to that. Not to mention - relentless audience participation! :-(
I saw this play performed in Australia and I can only gather that it is a script for a different culture. I read in a NYT article that it was originally a 10 minute play and I’m not surprised. That plot, characters, gags, and innuendo are thinner than a crepe. The premise has the potential to be a romp of on the nose innuendo, but that’s an idea which is never actualised.
Maybe it’s one of those things that need to be experienced live, but reading this was a bland experience. It‘s soulless and in its attempts to be zany, it comes off more like it was written by an AI. The only good thing about it is that it’s short
This is a very short play and would work well in a studio environment or as part of compilation of short plays.
The characters while having some funny moments, have no real background and there is very little development.
I do like the audience participation that is included as part of the plot and it is because of this that I think it would work better in a small studio than on a big stage.
As it is a play it is very hard to judge the overall comedy impact by simply reading it cold, however, in parts, just reading the dialogue made me laugh out loud.
I would really like to see this performed as I think it would be a lot more funny. I would go and see this if a company near me was doing it.
I enjoy the sense of realism that the playwright insists the actors and director use when landing the jokes and the dialogue. I think the nuclear bomb shelter is a little bit out of left field; I would have like to see more character development and plot motivation. It's a cute show, and I enjoy the audience participation aspect of it. A good spoof comedy.
I appreciate the audience participation aspect. Starts out light and humorous, and then takes a turn that I wasn't expecting. This probably performs better than it reads.
