Learning languages isn't just about syntax and grammar. It's also about the cultural elements of the language.

If you're thinking about embarking on any kind of course of study for Mandarin, this should be your first read. Fast and concise; a great introduction that'll give you some key background--and help keep you sane as you struggle with a whole new language.

Not just a book about the Chinese language. A very funny and insightful read that explains and demystifies aspects of the Chinese culture through its language.
