This book was a revelation. Excellent and intense story-telling, brilliant quality of translation. It's a little sad I lack the proficiency to read the original text in Malayalam despite it being my mother tongue :( Thank heavens for translators.
Favourite stories: The Jugular of Memory, What the Souls Do at Midnight, and Yellow is the Colour of Longing.
And these lines in the Translator's Note hit real hard.

In a recent work of research on feminists in Kerala, one of the interviewees commented that patriarchy in the Malayalee public is difficult to pin down because it is 'so much in the air'. I think this turn of phrase is significant: there is a way in which modern patriarchy in Kerala resembles air pollution. It is so pervasive that one may not notice it unless one observes closely, and with the help of powerful tools."

Quirky writing with just the right dose it dark humor intertwined with powerful characters and good story telling. I loved a lot of the women portrayed: everyday women with conviction and perspective that is refreshing. Light read with addictive stories.

I had vaguely heard about Meera, but was not well aware of her style of writing. I picked this book because I was intrigued by this beautiful cover and the interesting name. It's a collection of short stories by the popular contemporary Malyalam fiction writer K.R.Meera.
All of the stories talk about women, and about the issues that have been plaguing women of our society for ages. The women are diverse, their problems are varied, and the style of writing these stories is different across all them. The stories emphasize on a woman's desires, society's control on women, sexual violence and so many other issues.
The honesty with which these characters have been brought to life will move you.
Meera has a satirical writing style, and I definitely had some problems going through some stories. I had to come back to them again to understand them better. But there were other stories, the ones that I could feel and understand in one go, these made her style so likable. So, while her writing may not be everyone's cup of tea, she is definitely worth giving a shot.
I would like to read more books by her, before I can decide if her writing appeals to me.

കെ. ആർ മീര എഴുതിയ "മോഹമഞ്ഞ" എന്ന ചെറുകഥ, ഒരു സ്ത്രീയും പുരുഷനും യാദൃശ്ചികമായി ഒരാശുപത്രിയിൽ വെച്ച് കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്നു.രണ്ടുപേരും രോഗബാധിതർ. എങ്കിലും ലൈംഗികത്വത്തിൻറെ മാന്ത്രികശക്തിക്കു രണ്ടുപേരും വശംവദരാകുന്നു.അവർ രണ്ടുപേരും വിവാഹിതർ,മക്കളുള്ളവർ ( അവൾ വിവാഹമോചിതയാണ് ).രണ്ടുപേരും ക്രമേണ അടുക്കുന്നു. ലോഡ്ജിലെ, ഒരുമുറിയിൽ ഒരു കിടക്കയിൽ അവർ പരസ്പരം കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു. പിന്നീടു അവർ കാണുന്നതേയില്ല. ദിവസങ്ങള്ക്ക് ശേഷം, അയാളുടെ മരണവാർത്ത അവൾ അറിയുന്നു, അവളുടെ കണ്ണുകളിലെ "മോഹമഞ്ഞ" ബാധിച്ചാണ് അയാൾ മരിച്ചതെന്നും അവൾ അറിയുന്നു.

Beautiful collection of short stories. Very intense - I couldn’t quite understand some of the Malayalam references and some of the stories had to be re-read. I am sure the original book in Malayalam is terrific! Using this book for the color prompt in the popsugar challenge.

The writing style was interesting, different in each story, but somewhat uneasy to read. It leaves a heavy feeling. The stories are connected yet disconnected. While they are about women and the issues that plague them in the society, the stories or women characters aren't linked.
Not one I'd reread but one book I think should be read.

A book I'll most definitely come back to. Haven't read one of those in that bucket for quite some time. K.R.Meera's prose has these surreal factions of words while making them so close to life, which I feel is something extremely difficult to balance and what she does an effortless phenomenal job of. Keep going! :)

The book comprising of eight short stories which has the right amount of dark humour, deep meaning and powerful characters. The writing style of K. R Meera is Unique and amazing.
The short stories portray various kind of women and the issues they face in day to day life in our society. They emphasize on desires of women, society's control over them, sexual violence and other relevant topics. Some of the stories are really complex and it takes more than one read to understand them. It may not be everyone's cup of tea. But personally, I enjoyed reading it.

This book made me realise a lot of things. Sad things mostly but also hopeful.
While reading this book, I came across the short story " The Jugular of Memory". Within a few sentences, it transported me back to high school when I read it in its original language. It made me realise how the relevance of this short story would never die, because it centers around such indirect, almost invisible violence that women face. It also made me realise how beautiful and rich the Malayalam language made the story and yet the translation was still able to grasp this hollow sense of pain so well. I might be going in circles but i definitely enjoyed the book and the trip down memory lane.

An easy read, but not upto the mark.

This was an extremely difficult book to read and to rate. I have given it five stars despite the uneasiness and the sadness that some of the stories evoked in me.
I underestimated the author's capacity to 'get to me' with a short story.
Noor, same sex sorrows are all different takes of issues we have known. The author forces you to look at her world and feel it.
The standout and by far for me the most unsettling was 'The saga of Krishna', followed closely by 'Sasandeham'.
Not for the gentle hearted. More like read, feel and weep!

Eloquent and powerful collection of stories featuring a variety of characters and relationships in Kerala. The stories show a diverse range of themes, but Meera's treatment of romantic relationships is especially striking--from a beautiful story about a gay male couple to heterosexual romantic narratives--she brings all of the characters to life in beautifully surprising ways.

Stories from the Malayala divya desam are always close to my heart.
I'd read anything written by the firebrand, K.R Meera. An ardent fan of her work. She writes stories of absolute humanness in an unbridled and unfiltered manner. Her ability to unearth layers of emotions in her characters is so astute. She has an ingenious formula in displaying the raw emotions of her story's characters. So intense. So intimate. Accentuates the vulnerability of her characters in the story. Becomes an eye-opener to know the fallibility and fragility of human relationships.

Longing is an anthology of short stories written originally in Malayalam by #KRMeera. Translated to English by J.Devika.
The final chapter titled Guillotine hit close to home for me. A painful story of one-sided love, heart break, betrayal unrequited and rejection. The wham bham of the #Guillotine split my heart.
"The blade fell. Wham! Her heart broke in two. The two parts writhed for very, very long. Writhing, too, is a way of clinging to life.".
"Rejection, truly, can work out to be a death sentence of sorts.".
'Le Guillotine' was the main symbol of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. It was used to chop the heads off the monarchs King Louis XVI, #MarieAntoinette, and thousands of French civilians.
The guillotined head of Marie-Antoinette becomes a Horcrux in the story spanning across centuries, immortalizing the historical event in which she gets beheaded. This historical pisode was analogous to the 2 lovers' lives.
A seamless transition and I was transported back and forth between 2 eras. The visceral depiction of heartbreak, betrayal, bleeding was spine-chilling. How does one write about heartbreak so beautifully? This was K.R.Meera's master stroke. Enjoyed the history drawn parallel to her story. Reading this chapter was a powerful experience for me. Unforgettable.

A collection of short stories through which KR Meera captures the longingness - for dignity, for desire, for love, for happiness - plaguing the lives of women from diverse backgrounds in Kerala. In the translator’s note, modern patriarchy in Kerala is referred to as “air pollution” which the author pins down in all its subtle and explicit details.
The stories are quirky, satirical, and dark, they will make you uncomfortable. Her prose is exquisite, her style is intense and unique to the extent that it varies with each story. In “Yellow is the Colour of Longing” she explores the playful flirtations of a two middle aged people meeting in a hospital, in “What the Souls do at Midnight” she pens down the surreal journey of the soul of woman stuck with marital and familial obligations longing for more, in “Same-Sex Sorrows” she narrators the tale of a man as he questions his entire perception of women and the world after attending a feminist conference. Then, there is “The Saga of Krishna” about a father grappling with the reality of his daughter being groomed and abused at the hands of a man he trusted and brought into the house.
Some stories do require you to slow down and/or revisit. My favourite stories were “Finally, Sasandeham”, “The Jugular of Memory”, “Ave Maria”, and "Noor—Light Years of Solitude”.
They stories have references and descriptions of violence and rape, I wasn’t aware of that and a few stories, particularly “Ave Maria”, “Noor-Light Years of Solitude” and “The Saga of Krishna”, rattled me.

There are many loves we forgot to tell,many caring circumstances where we neglected, many love we didn't feel when loved one is nearby. This book contains such stories of love,desire, lust and death.
Some love we will be experiencing when our loved one will be in death bed or some will have high desire for love and they may share it with stranger but all the eternal love may have an end in tasting the death where all the hopes gets shattered.
K.R Meera brings us with such short and wonderful stories to us. Her mesmerising story telling skill will make us in trance.

Yellow is the colour of longing: Wild, raw, heavy and powerful. I've ranted a lot about K.R. Meera's writing and her books in my feed. But I won't rest till I influence at least 10 readers to pick her book. Once you start reading her books there is no going back.
Like all other her books this book also whirls around women and their life. It is a collection of short stories that express women's emotions, desires and how society and family strangle them. Each story left me awestruck and numb. As usual, the characters are top-notch. Her narration and characterisation are something that readers can't dismiss from their mind. I really couldn't pick a favourite. As every story is phenomenal in its own way. So, please do read this book and her other books too. You are gonna miss out on something major in Indian literature If you didn't. Do take a look at my other K. R. Meera books review on my feed. Highly recommended.

This is the first book I am reading of KR Meera and I am mad at myself for not reading her work earlier. Each story could be a full-fledged novel but Meera packs a punch with her characters, dialogues and settings. Sometimes, you are left with more questions about a story after your finish reading it and I think that's where her genius is. She leaves gaps that she probably wants the readers to fill. The stories made me gasp, chuckle silently and almost moved me to tears, sometimes. I love her sardonic wit when she makes fun of subtle Malayali patriarchy. Can't wait to read her other work!

I have heard a lot about the author which compelled me to pick up this book. The book didn't really stand up to its expectations, I think the translation doesn't do justice to the writing. Except for the title story, I didn't like any of the stories.
