One flustered bookworm. One hotshot hockey player. One stalled elevator and zero chance of keeping it casual.
Julia Leonard has always preferred the men in her books to the ones in real life. Between her part-time job, her final year of college, and wrangling her younger siblings, she barely has time for dating. But her book boyfriends? They’re always there for her. When a much-needed getaway to a book convention finally arrives, Julia is ready to escape into her fictional worlds—until she locks herself out of her hotel room in her rattiest pajamas and cat slippers. Just when she thinks the humiliation can’t get worse, she stumbles into the lobby… and straight into the path of the most gorgeous man she’s ever seen. Colby Rush is used to turning heads. As one of Minnesota’s biggest hockey stars, he’s never had trouble getting a woman’s attention. But lately, the endless string of flings has felt empty. When he nearly collides with a woman in cat slippers and a messy bun, her disheveled charm captivates him, as does her complete lack of recognition of his fame. An elevator malfunction traps them together, and the sparks quickly turn into flames of passion. But when the doors finally open, they’ll have to decide—was their connection just a fleeting moment, or are they willing to take a chance on something real?
The Shafted Series is a collection of short, standalone, in-elevator romances that can be read in any order.

Julia and Colby are stuck in their hotel's elevator. She's in town to meet her favorite romance author and he's here to support his sister. When they get stuck, she reads to him about all of the perfect book boyfriends to distract him. He declares he could flirt better than them. One thing leads to another and they end up hooking up. Once rescued, both want more, so she goes to his room to hang out.
⭐️ 5/5 stars – Okay, the new mile-high club has officially been unlocked… forced proximity, insta-lust, hockey, and romance books. We’ve got banter that’s top tier, chemistry that snaps, and yes—we even get the book line. You know the one.
🌶️ 4/5 Spice Rating – The spice is flirty, filthy, and kicks in fast— the elevator doors barely close before the tension starts climbing. It’s explicit, on-page, and blends dirty talk with genuine chemistry that actually delivers. Colby brings big hotshot energy in all the best ways—confident, generous, and just the right amount of unhinged.
🖤 1/5 Darkness Rating – Light/minimal triggers, mostly off-page. It’s all fun, flirt, and heat with zero trauma or heavy themes. Any emotional moments are light and relatable, not dark or painful.
⸻ What I Loved:
I was living for the elevator chaos. The forced proximity is perfection. The banter was flirty as hell, Colby was giving golden retriever energy with a filthy mouth, and honestly, I’d let him press all my buttons (yes, elevator pun absolutely intended). And you better believe I kicked my feet like a drama queen when he hit me with the classic book boyfriend wall lean. At just around 50 pages, it’s the perfect little quickie… and trust me, the tension builds way faster than that elevator ever did.
⸻ The Story (No Spoilers!):
She just wanted a quiet night—pizza, a dirty book, no responsibilities. Instead? She locks herself out of her room… in cat slippers. And ends up stuck in an elevator with a guy who’s basically a real-life book boyfriend.
He’s hot, he’s charming, and he’s got major golden retriever energy—with a filthy mouth that does not disappoint. She’s flustered, braless, and 100% not ready for this kind of tension.
The elevator’s broken, but let’s be honest… they’re the ones getting stuck. What starts with awkward small talk turns into full-on steam, a wall lean, and some top-tier elevator chaos.
⸻ Final thoughts:
This was fast, fun, and hot in all the right ways. We’ve got a broken elevator (yes please), forced proximity that delivers, a dirty-talking golden retriever of a hero, and steam that turns up the second those doors close. The writing is voicey and addictive—I kicked my damn feet when the wall lean happened. My only gripe? I want more of these two. I got a glimpse, and now I’m greedy—I want the after, the next day, the next everything.

Sometimes a quickie will hit the spot.
Recommend to: someone looking for a quick read with mild spice that is giving off: book girly’s fantasy meet cute.
This is book two in a stand alone short story series. This was the perfect leave them wanting more. There is enough build up that it doesn’t feel insta lusty but still pretty quick from strangers to spicy time. Can’t blame the FMC if I was in her shoes on a ME time trip and was presented with a hottie and the opportunity, YOLO. There is enough character development to understand why each MC is going for it. The leave them wanting more, definitely hits when we don’t get to go up to the penthouse. I need a full romance story for these two.
Penthouse Hotshot is a novella that packs some steam in an elevator. Julia is at the hotel to meet her favourite author and Colby, a famous hockey player, is there to support his sister (who just happens to be Julia's favourite author). Julia ventures out of her room to get ice and realises she left her key behind so has to go to the desk for a replacement. Cue Colby arriving, and offering to share a lift together. Oh and don't forget Julia is dressed in her PJs and slippers - embarrassing!! Colby enjoys the fact Julia actually doesn't know who he is - like seriously! Colby is scared of tight places so to help him feel better - Julia starts to read her latest read to Colby (which just happens to be written by Colby's sister). One thing leads to another and they hook up - in the elevator. As it's a novella it's short and we don't get a huge amount of backstory or what happens next, but a quick fun read nonetheless.
Book 2 in Maren Jenner’s elevator series did not disappoint. If you enjoyed her first steamy installment, you’ll love this one too. If you didn’t read it, you don’t need to backtrack since these are standalone stories. These are quick reads with a common location and theme - a man and woman (so far anyway) who get stuck in an elevator in a new hotel in - I think Grand Rapids, MI.
Do you see them ride off into the sunset? No. The entire book takes place over maybe a few hours. There’s no epilogue with 2.5 kids and a dog (which I appreciate). But the potential is there. This isn’t insta-love. This is insta-attraction and let’s see where things go. It’s a fun, quick, frisky read.
"Not only are you gorgeous, you’re intelligent and kind. There’s no one else I’d rather be sharing this elevator with." - Colby
"Now, kiss me like you mean it." - Julia
Julia and Colby are stuck in an elevator. Julia loves to read, her book boyfriends give her an escape from her sometimes stressful life. It turns out Colby is a real-life book boyfriend. Colby doesn't like small spaces, and Julia helped him relax. I really enjoyed this novella, the characters have a story, and they told each other a lot in a short time period. It's an unusual start to a beautiful beginning for the two of them.
This is a short, spicy read! I’ve been loving the hockey romance stories lately! Julia is in town for a book signing with her favorite author. It turns out that she gets stuck in the elevator with the author’s brother, Colby, who happens to be a professional hockey player. Their attraction is immediate and their time in the elevator together is steamy! It’s a fun, quick story, and I can’t wait for the next one!
Penthouse Hotshot is such a cute story. Colby is just adorable and Julia is a hot mess but so relatable. I loved seeing their attraction to each other turn into something more, and they’re just cute together. Definitely a must read if you need a short, steamy story to scratch an itch.
This was such a fun short elevator romance. I loved the playful banter between the characters and the hot steamy scene in the elevator. I think a few of us women can relate to how Julia thought Colby was going to leave her hanging but he didn't.
4.5⭐️ Ok, I ate this up! I freaking cackled at Colby and his pickup lines. So funny! Maren, how did you come up with tic-tac-toe? Again, I feel like the events naturally happened. Something I can see really happening. Something tells me that I wouldn't be so lucky to have this experience happen to me. In another life of course!
The kindle girly who finds a man who just might turn out to give the book boyfriends a run for their money. A stalled elevator turns into budding romance that leaves you wanting to know how their love story plays out.
This was a quick and spicy novella. perfect for scratching that itch. The chemistry between Colby and Jules is electric. I am absolutely loving this series.
Super quick kinda sorta hockey romance. When two people get stuck in an elevator what’s there to do… compare your book boyfriends to the real deal that is!
Jules gets what we all want- a man who turns out to be even better than a book boyfriend! Short, hot and sweet all at the same time. Love this little series!
Penthouse Hotshot: Book 2 of the Shafted Series by Maren Jenner is a wonderful novella. I love a quick HEA, and this one has spice, ice, and everything nice. Julia and Colby are both excellent characters. Obviously, with a novella, the author has to walk the line between not enough backstory and just enough. Maren Jenner does a great job, and you get all the juicy bits, oohs and aahs, plus some interesting eyebrow raises. Can’t recommend her writing enough, and excited for the next one in this series!
Such a delicious romance. Who wouldn't love being stuck in an elevator with a hot hockey player? This was such a fun quick read. Just the right amount of steam.
This one was so cute and he is a hockey star drool their connection is unreal and definitely my favourite of the two. This author writes so well I recommend you check her out
If you haven’t read these spicy novellas do it! I’m loving this shafted series. Each couple meets and gets stuck in the elevator of this building and then things heat up.
Julia goes to a book convention to meet her favorite author. What happens when she gets locked out of her room in her bunny slippers and stuck in an elevator with Colby the hunky hockey player?! Let’s just say…book boyfriend behavior.
Penthouse Hotshot: A Short Standelone In-Elevator Romance eARC Review: 3.75/5 Stars *This is the second part of the Short story Standalones* Tropes: Forced proximity Hockey player x romance book lover Claustrophobic MMC Strangers to lovers Insta attraction Cat slippers Elevator fun She’s not like other girls Book boyfriend moves challenge
This standalone read was just the perfect short story that left you with just enough. There was a great amount of build up within the lusty but pretty quick stranger spicy time of a romance read. Julia is at the hotel to meet her favourite author and Colby, a famous hockey player, who is just there to support his sister (who just happens to be Julia's favourite author). When Julia ventures out of her room to get ice and realises she left her key behind so has to go to the desk for a replacement… this is when she meets mister hotty mc-hot Colby. Colby thankfully is nice enough to share a lift with her. Oh and don't forget Julia is dressed in her PJs and slippers - embarrassing!! Colby enjoys the fact Julia actually doesn't know who he is - like seriously! He loves that because it lets him just breathe rather than worrying about what someone thinks of him constantly. But while being in this elevator together, we find out that Colby is scared of tight places so… so in order to kind of calm him down Julia starts to read her latest read to Colby (which just so happens to be written by Colby's sister). One thing leads to another and they hooking up - in the elevator.
Overall, this is a super short short read that does not need much explaining on the background aspect. But no matter, I do recommend this and it is a must.
*Penthouse Hotshot* is the second book in The Shafted series, and it's such a fun, quick read! This adorable instalove story follows Julia and Colby, both visiting a book convention. Julia is super excited to see her favorite author, who just so happens to be Colby's sister. Colby is there, too, lending a hand to promote her new hockey romance novel.
When Julia and Colby unexpectedly find themselves stuck in an elevator, things start to sizzle! They decide to have some fun by testing real pick-up lines against the pick-up lines you’d find in books, leading to some hilarious and steamy moments. This fast-paced love story is so engaging that you won’t want to put it down—you can easily breeze through it in one sitting! Enjoy the ride!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A chance meeting in the hotel lobby between a hot hockey player and pretty college student leads to a very eventful and fortuitous elevator ride. Colby is used to having women vie for his attention, but there is just something about pretty woman dressed in her well-worn comfort outfit and cat slippers that draws him to her. He invites her into the elevator with him rather than waiting for another to arrive. Colby does his best to start a conversation, but embarrassment keeps Julia from engaging with him. Then their elevator stops between floors. It turns out that that Julia has more than one way to distract Colby from his panic about being trapped in a small space. With a smutty novel as inspiration, cue the flirtation, the heat and naughty interaction!
I am happy to recommend this thoroughly entertaining spicy novella .
Should I ever find myself single and trapped in an elevator, I certainly hope it's with one of these heroes!! This series is quickly becoming an obsession. They're quick to read and contain all the heat and emotion to fulfill my need for romance. I love that the story leaves a bit of an open ending. It allows the reader to place Jules and Colby in a place of their own. I absolutely LOVED that Jules read aloud to Colby and helped keep him centered. There were plenty of giggles and the FIRE between these two!! WOOOO!
Favorite quote: "She held onto him, and he loved being her anchor in the storm of his making."
After reading the first story in the shafted series, I knew that I would have to try and wait patiently for the next one. Julia gets locked out of her room when she went to get ice. Now, she has to go to the lobby and get a new key while wearing her cat slippers... Even more embarrassing, a gorgeous hockey player is checking in. Does he notice her? Not only does he notice her, they end up in the same elevator. This would definitely make being stuck in an elevator more appealing. Pick up this quick read and experience the delicious tension for yourself.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another quick flirty novella by Maren Jenner in the Shafted Series. A faced paced spicy 75-page read. Julia, our FMC, is a curvy book lover in Michigan to meet a romance author at a convention. Colby is our MMC, who is the newest hockey star who happens to be the authors brother in town to support his sister at the convention. As per the shafted series, they get stuck in an elevator together, and things get spicy.
Love this insta lust, forced proximity story. It's a fun flirty story perfect for a little quick read.
This is the second book in the Shafted series, can absolutely be read as a standalone. But both books in the series so far are so good. It is such a fun, quick novella. Julia is a bookworm with all the book boyfriends because real life men don't live up to them right?! And Colby is a famous hockey player with a romance writing sister. They find themselves stuck in an elevator together and things get STEAMY. Loved it!
