Highlights from the Spring 2025 edition of Slightly Foxed:
Noonie Minogue’s enticing article on Axel Munthe’s The Story of San Michele (copy acquired - hope to read it soon) Jim Ring’s piece on Pat Reid’s The Colditz Story which brought back memories of reading an ancient Pan Paperback as a child - probably one of the first books for adults I read. Maggie Ferguson’s moving item on Alan Johnson’s This Boy, a memoir of a childhood marred by extreme poverty that has been universally praised, but which I have yet to read. Tony Hufton’s very funny encounter with a selectively highlighted second hand copy of Dorothy Wordsworth’s Continental Journals, 1798|1820.
I have only just found out about Slightly Foxed and am enthralled with this the first edition I have read. From the opening article on racing cars to the delightful article on Christopher Morley which prompted me to start reading Parnassus on Wheels. What a great quarterly! My interest was prompted by earlier articles on Georges Simenon, so I will head back for those now and I’m sure I will find other treasures.
As with an eclectic collection of essays this edition both delighted, disappointed, dumbfounded and detained me through its pages. A real high is the essay on VSW with whom I have had an adult life-long obsession. However, whilst one or two essays will always lose my attention, many more will edify and entertain in equal measure.
I’m a bit behind on my seasons, so sitting at Spring 2025 seems a bit at odds when it’s sub-zero temperatures outside, but it nevertheless provides a splash of spring-like colour on a frosty January day.
I have just taken out a subscription to Slightly Foxed after wondering whether to for a long while. So pleased that I have. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one!.
