‘Aliyah’ was an interesting peek into an aspect of Indian history I had little idea about. Set in a little town in Kerala, Sethu traces the foibles, stories, and follies of the Jews who occupy Jew Street. In non-linear fashion, almost rambling at times, he presents a picture of Kerala just about the time of India’s independence.
In doing so, he reveals the agonies of Indian Jews, who had settled in Kerala, for hundreds of years. When their ‘motherland’ Israel came into being and Jerusalem called them, the Jews are perplexed. What’s home? Is it where they are born? Or it with the people of their religion.
There’s no answer at the end of it from Sethu at least. This was intriguing, but I found the rambling narrative a bit hard to keep up. The characters were quirky without really being understood. Digressions into Kerala politics didn’t help the pace. But this is an important book into a buried corner of India.

My rating is 4.5.
By now, I’ve realised that reviewing Sethu’s books is a near impossible task. They are so rich, so multi-layered that you’ll inevitably miss out on some points. I’m bravely making an attempt here, anyway. The Saga of Muziris was the first book I read by Sethu and I was absolutely impressed by its complexity and canvas. In Aliyah, Sethu takes us on a similar journey into the past by reimagining the lives of the Jews who lived in Kochi until the late 1940s-early 50s when they migrated to Israel.
The epicentre of the book is a small fictional Jewish family, one among many who live in the tiny village of Chendamangalam. There’s Eshimuthimma, the matriarch, her three sons Menahem, Evron, and Elias, and her grandson Salamon. Aliyah traces the ups and downs of the family with Salamon mainly furthering the narrative. Summing up the novel’s storyline is deceptively simple – in 1948, Ben Gurion announces that Israel welcomed Jews from all over the world. This is joyous news to many people in the little Jewish community but others like Salamon remain unsure. Everyone needs to decide soon, though.
“So which is our country then? Do we have anything we can claim as our own with certainty?” Elias asks Salamon.
At its heart, the book tries to seek answers to these questions. The Jews had called India home as far back as 70 AD when they arrived in Cochin after being exiled from Israel. Ever since, they had lived peacefully (well, mostly if you discount the internecine rifts between Malabari Jews and Paradesi Jews who came later in the 15th century) in Kerala with the munificence of the Hindu Kings.
“What was the advantage in selling, at a throwaway price, everything that had been acquired through generations, and leaving with just what they could take for a land across the sea?” wonders Evron.
Aliyah in Hebrew means ‘ascent’. The central dilemma is – will migration truly be an ascent for everyone? Should they go to Israel to keep the faith or be in India to keep their homes?
I relished the slow, immersive pace of this novel with its oddball set of characters spanning three generations. It’s arresting for its long expositions on Kerala’s politics and cultural history. I felt like Salamon many times, when all I can do is listen to these unfettered musings, sometimes nodding in understanding and sometimes not when it got confusing and repetitive.
I cannot end this review without mentioning Rebecca, the most mesmerising of all the fiery women in the book. She does not live long (not a spoiler) but her presence continues to dominate Salamon’s dreams and Muthimma’s memories. Kudos to Catherine Thankamma who has translated splendidly, retaining the deep flavours of a cultural milieu.

ആലിയ..
പുണ്യഭൂമിയിലേക്കുള്ള തിരിച്ചുപോക്ക്...
കേരളത്തിലെ ജൂത സമൂഹത്തെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ചരിത്രവും മിത്തും മറ്റു വിവരണങ്ങളും ചേർത്ത് രചിക്കപ്പെട്ട നോവലാണ് 'ആലിയ'.
"ലോകമാകെ ചിതറിപ്പോയ ജൂതർ നെഞ്ചോട് ചേർത്ത് വെച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. എന്നെങ്കിലും ഒരിക്കൽ സർവ്വശക്തനായ ദൈവം പരിശുദ്ധമായ ഇസ്രായേൽ മണ്ണിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചുവിളിക്കാതിരിക്കില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ വർഷംതോറുമുള്ള പാസ് ഓവർ ചടങ്ങുകളിൽ, പരിശുദ്ധ 'ഹഗാഡ' വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ അതിലെ "ബൈഷാന അബ്ബ യെരൂശലേം" എന്ന ഹീബ്രു വരികൾ ഉരുവിടുന്നത് ഉള്ളിൽ തട്ടിയ പ്രാർത്ഥനകളോടെയാണ് അതായത് ഇനി അടുത്ത കൊല്ലം യെറൂശലേമിൽ എന്നുതന്നെ."
കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രമായ ശലമോൻ എന്ന സോളമനെ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടാണ് കഥ മുന്നോട്ടു നീങ്ങുന്നത്. എവിടെനിന്നൊക്കെയോ വന്നു ഏതോ കാലത്ത് ഇന്നാട്ടിൽ കുടിയേറിയ സമൂഹം, അവരുടെ തിരിച്ചുപോക്ക്, ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടു കിടക്കുന്ന സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾക്കും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവർക്കും മറ്റു നാട്ടുകാർക്കുമൊക്കെ സങ്കടവും അതിശയവും ഉണ്ടാവുന്നു. എന്തിന് ഒരു തിരിച്ചുപോക്ക്, പിറന്ന നാട് ഇതല്ലേ, പൂർവികർ പിറന്നതും വളർന്നതും ഇവിടെയല്ലേ, അപ്പൊ പിന്നെ എന്തിനെന്നു പല കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും സ്വയം ചോദിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. വ്യത്യസ്തമായ വായനാനുഭവം തന്നെയാണ് ആലിയ വായനക്കാർക്കു നല്കുക..

I first saw this book at the bookstore and my attention was grabbed by the colourful cover. Upon closer inspection, I was amazed to know it was a book based in Kerala, and my curiosity piqued further when I read the blurb which revealed that it's about the Jewish community. I quickly marked it in my to-read list and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. With my husband's birthday nearing, I was also relieved that I didn't have to think much for a gift.
Aliyah struck me with wonder and amazement right from the first page and I was happy how it kept me glued till the last. A page turner, this beautiful story has been narrated equally beautifully. Though I haven't read the original by Sethu (and am doubtful about reading it owing to my weakness in Malayalam), I was satisfied reading the translation by Catherine Thankamma.
There is a dream like feel to the story and enables the reader to imagine very evocatively - I felt like I was watching an art film! This is a feel good story and the author has brought alive the characters so well that the reader can resonate with. Weaving information, facts, and history with the daily quirks of each character and the community of the Cochin Jews, Aliyah is a delightful read.
One can easily identify with the protagonist Salamon, and the circle of people around him. The author takes the reader through the transition of Kochi over the generations, the change in mindsets of the people, as well as the transition in the political culture of the state. Salamon's struggles of growing up - his indecisiveness, passive rebelliousness, confused passions, and befuddled friendships are all resonant with the reader.
The theme of the Jewish diaspora's 'return to the homeland' runs throughout the novel and familiarises the reader with the community's battle with identity and roots. The question that bogs both Salamon and the reader - of his return to Jerusalem - that pervades the book, is finally resolved in a most apt way at the end. There couldn't have been a better manner to bring the story to this perfect denouement.

ജൂത സമൂഹം ജനിച്ചു വളര്ന്നിടത്തു നിന്നു പറിച്ച് നടലിന് തയ്യാറാകുന്ന ഒരു കാലഘട്ടവും, അതില് ചിലരെങ്കിലും നേരിട്ട മാനസികസംഘര്ഷങ്ങളുമാണ് നോവലിന്റെ പ്രമേയം.
രണ്ടാം തരം പൗരന്മാരാകാന് അറിഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടു പോവുന്ന ഒരു ജനത.മുന്പേതോ തലമുറയിലുള്ളവരെ അഭയം നല്കി സ്വീകരിച്ച നാട്ടില് തലമുറകളോളം അഭയാര്ത്ഥികളായി മാത്രം കഴിയാന് സ്വയം തീരുമാനിച്ച ജൂത സമൂഹം ഒരത്ഭുതമായി ഇന്നും നിലനില്ക്കുന്നു.
അതിനുള്ള കാരണത്തിലേക്ക് വെളിച്ചം വീശുന്ന എന്തെങ്കിലും കാണുമെന്ന് കരുതിയാണ്,പ്രഥമമായി ഈ നോവല് കൈയിലെടുത്തത്. അങ്ങനെയൊരു കാരണവും ഈ ഫിക്ഷനില് നോവലിസ്റ്റ് മുന്നോട്ട് വയ്ക്കാത്തതിനാല് തന്നെ വായനാനുഭവം അത്ര ആസ്വാദ്യകരമായി തോന്നിയില്ല.
മറുപിറവി എന്ന അതിമനോഹര നോവലിന്റെ സൃഷ്ടാവ് ഈ കഥ പറച്ചിലില് നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തി.
എന്നിരുന്നാലും , നോവലിസ്റ്റിന്റെ ചില തത്ത്വങ്ങള് മനോഹരങ്ങളായി തോന്നി.
രമാനന്ദന് ശലമോനോടു, ജനിച്ച മണ്ണില് നിന്ന് പറിച്ച് നടപ്പെടുന്നത് വേരുകള് ആഴത്തിലൂന്നി വൃക്ഷത്തിനെ ശക്തമായി വളരാന് പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുമെന്ന് പറയുന്നതും,
റെബേക്ക ഏലിയാസിനോടു , ഒന്നു തുടങ്ങാനെ പ്രയാസമുള്ളൂ എന്ന് പറയുന്നതും.
ചിലയിടത്ത് ആഖ്യാനശൈലിയില് വ്യക്തതക്കുറവും അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്.ചില സന്ദര്ഭങ്ങളില് ആര് ആരോടാണ് പറയുന്നതെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാകുന്നില്ല

നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളോളം, എന്തുകൊണ്ട് അവര് ഇവിടെ അന്യരായി മാത്രം ജീവിച്ചു ചോദ്യത്തിന്റെ ഉത്തരമൊഴികെ!!!

"Aliyah" which literally means "ascent" is a story set after World War II when the country of Israel was formed. The formation of Israel was a realization of dream for all the Jews in the world. It was a chance to return to the roots, finally be in a place where they belong, finally have a home. This is a story of a Jew community in a small village of Kerela who sold all their belongings and broke generation-old ties with the land they were born in to return to the 'promised land'. This is a story of identity and belonging. It deals with three generations of the family and how they feel about making a journey to the 'promised land'.
The story explores the concept of having a home and what exactly is a root of an individual. Is it the land where your community belongs - your "karma bhumi" or is it your holy land or is it where your ancestors have stayed for generations?
Sethu perfectly weaves this delimma that Soloma and his family faces while preparing to go to Isreal.
A perfect tale of individuals torn between two loyalties - the Native soil and their Jewish identity.
Definitely a recommendation for anyone who would want to explore Indian local literature. This is my second book which is translated from another language and it has further motivated me to explore local literature.

A perfect tale of individuals torn between two loyalties - the Native soil and their Jewish identity.
Definitely a recommendation for anyone who would want to explore Indian local literature. This is my second book which is translated from another language and it has further motivated me to explore local literature.

Aaliya is an emotional tale of a jewish family in kerala who had to leave their homeland when their 'motherland' calls the gathering of all the jews around the world who were spilted to different corners around the world due to the atrocities against them. The story mainly focuses on Solomon , the last born child of one of the first jewish families in Kochi.
In the preface of the novel, the author talks how a part of the society was disappeared during his childhood. Sethu through the story talks about jewish history in kerala, their plights on being constantly attacked and mocked as a minority, the political atmosphere of kerala in 60's and the ultimate disappearance of jews that left only a few handful.The novel is a dwell into the buried part of history that is long forgotten.
Solomon is confused about his future and his life when he has to leave his home to the motherland where nobody knows what awaits them.But as Eliyasachan says nobody is happy on leaving but it is always better for jews to be together rather being alone.

മറുപിറവി എന്ന പുസ്തകം പോസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ ഒരു സുഹൃത്ത് നിർദേശിച്ചതാണ് ‘ആലിയ’. കുടിയേറ്റ കഥകളോടുള്ള താല്പര്യം കൊണ്ടോ ചരിത്ര പരാമർശമുള്ളവായോടുള്ള പ്രിയം കൊണ്ടോ എന്നറിയില്ല, ഉടനെ തന്നെ വാങ്ങുകയും വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ജൂത സമൂഹത്തെ കുറിച്ചു വിവരങ്ങൾ നൽകുന്ന കൃതി. പക്ഷേ ആകർഷണീയമായി ഒന്നുമില്ല താനും. ജൂത സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ആത്മസംഘർഷം ഈ നോവലിൽ കാണാം. എല്ലാ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും ജീവനോടെ നമ്മുടെ മുന്നിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നു. ഇസ്രേയിലിലേക്കു പോകണോ വേണ്ടയോ എന്ന് സംശയിക്കുന്ന ജൂത ജനത. കേരളത്തിലെ ജൂതസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ മാത്രം കഥയല്ല ഇത്. കൊച്ചി, പറവൂർ, കൊടുങ്ങാലൂരിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ വളർച്ചയും പന്തിഭോജനവും, സഹോദരനും, വിമോചന സമരവും എല്ലാം ഇതിലടങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്രതീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് ഉതകുന്ന രീതിയിൽ ഒരു വായനാസുഖം നൽകുന്നില്ല ഈ പുസ്തകം.

Brilliant story. It takes a while to grasp the characters by their names and relationships. That's just a translation aspect, else carried out pretty well.
Sharp social commentary, Emotional, thought provoking masterpiece. The story was very palpably descriptive.
Highly recommended book for those who enjoy characters navigating emotional conundrums, Jewish history and/or Indian landscapes, especially rural settings.

ഗംഭീരം
നോവലിനെക്കാളുപരി ഒരു ചരിത്രം പറഞ്ഞു തന്നു നോവലിസ്റ്റ്. നമുക്കിടയിൽ നമ്മിലൊരാളായി ജീവിക്കേണ്ടിയിരുന്നവർ ഇന്ന് മറുനാട്ടിൽ ... എന്തിനായിരുന്നു ഒരു ഒഴിച്ചുപോക്ക്..
ശലമോൻ ആയിരുന്നു ശരി.. അയാൾ മാത്രം...

Aaliya tells the story of the Jewish people of Kerala. Set in mid 20th century, it also gives an account of the newly formed Israel, Communism, Kerala politics and more. I quite enjoyed this novel except for the last couple of chapters which felt rather disconnected from the story.

The story of the last of the Malabari Jews, told through the eyes of one of their youngest. The story of the migration, leaving a land that sheltered them for millennia. Wonderfully written.
