Master of the maze or eternity in a nightmare labyrinth!
You decide to try the lame-looking Maze of Doom at the fun fair. But once inside, you realise that this is no ordinary amusement. The maze is massive and there are traps and mysterious creatures at every turn. Then you come across an old fortune-telling machine, which predicts an eerie future . . .
Will you discover the maze’s secrets and riches, or will you be trapped inside forever?
Another book I picked up because I wanted to see what modern CYOA books are like.
This one isn't too bad, featuring some fun situations and grisly deaths. It's mostly held back by a setting that keeps switching between sci-fi and fantasy since the innards of the maze is constantly changing. There's also very little plot apart from getting out of the maze, so it's really just moving from situation to situation. I suppose that keeps it exciting for younger readers, but it felt a bit too random to me and you're often whisked off to a new area before the current one has time to really get interesting.
A lot of the choices also felt lacking, with lots of "should we check this out, or do something else" situations or "should we confront this situation or run." It also has the flip-a-coin problem, in that many situations you may as well flip a coin with what you choose because there is zero indication which one will lead to death.
But for a younger reader, this would be a bit of good light entertainment. Some parts might be too scary for the very young, though.
I just expect books like this to have every ending be "rocks fall, everyone dies" but this does a really good job with the choose-your-own-adventure genre with endings ranging from "You just go home" or "You get something amazing and go home" to "You have an awesome adventure and win the maze" or "You die horrifically"
I recommend it to anyone who wants a quick exciting read.
A valiant attempt but missing the one crucial element for gamebooks - player agency. At no point did I feel like I could make a choice that wasn't basically random in its outcome. I think it also suffered from trying to do too much with the setting. On the whole unsatisfying.
