Murder is brewing in Compton Poppleford—and the tea is dangerously strong.
A retirement party should be an afternoon of tea, cakes, and fond farewells. But when a guest is found dead, fatally struck by a teapot, the gathering becomes a crime scene. Was it a tragic accident or a murder steeped in cunning?
With their loyal dog, Oswald, elderly sleuths Mrs Churchill and Miss Pemberley investigate a brew of long-held grudges, hidden motives and the dregs of secrets best left buried. Suspicions are stirred by a slippery local crook, a charming tea room owner, and a grieving spouse whose sorrow may conceal something darker.
It’s not long before the duo’s investigations land them in hot water and the attacker strikes again. Can Churchill and Pemberley track down the killer before events boil over?
Emily Organ is the author of over thirty historical cozy mysteries set in Victorian and 1920s England. Her bestselling series include the Penny Green Victorian Mysteries, the Augusta Peel Mysteries, and her newest Emma Langley Victorian Mysteries, in which a plucky widow teams up with former reporter Penny Green. She also writes the Churchill & Pemberley cozy mysteries, featuring two spirited senior sleuths. Emily’s books combine warmth, wit, and a love of history, inspired by her fascination with London’s past.
This was another excellent book with the investigating duo of the elderly Mrs Churchill and her spinster assistant, Pemberley and her little dog,Oswald! They bumble around but eventually stun everyone by solving the case! Mrs Churchill often comes up with daft suggestions, which Pemberley refutes but it is all done in a humorous way! Mrs Churchill fingerprinting possible suspects and arriving at a particular conclusion was very funny! Luckily, Pemberley pointed out to her the logic of said susoect not being the killer! I love this pair! The books are cheery, especially on a rainy afternoon! I am looking forward to the next one already!
It's a welcome return for Churchill & Pemberley. It's been a while but it's nice to return to Compton Poppleford and its cast of quirky characters. As always there are plenty of suspects and at the end Mrs Churchill lays out the motives and names the murderer. I do like an Agatha Christie style denouement ! An English Cozy mystery at its best.
Always delightful stories when Churchill, Pemberley, and Oswald are involved. And, besides murders to solve, the problem with the semnil cakes take the cake, literally. A sweet story for our sweet-toothed P.I.s Gotta love 'em. Highly Recommended.
Emily Organ's Cozy Mystery Series of Churchill and Pemberley are by far my most favourite ones. I can't have enough of this small town's characters, witty Churchill and blunt Pemberley, energetic Oswald, delicious eclaires, nosy neighbors, naive and always very well-structured mysteries. I was about to start re-reading them !!! Fortunately THE TEAPOT KILLER was just published. This is the series in which I discovered this genre and has stayed in my heart despite many others.
Churchill and Pembers together again bickering politely, deducing cleverly. Lots of characters. Lots of mildly sinister and funny suspects. Wonderful, satisfying antidote to the over serious, violent, unlikely mysteries out there. Good stuff. I look forward to the next installment!
The Teapot Killer is one of my favorite Churchill and Pemberley cozy novels. It brings in the whole village with lots of possibilities. Yet at the end you will be surprised !
After a lengthy hiatus book 9 of the series, "The Teapot Killer", has our two intrepid senior detectives, Churchill and Pemberley (and their dog Oswald), attending Inspector Mappin's retirement party when a "murder by teapot" occurs. The ladies pursue numerous clues at a local farm, a tea room, and a funeral parlor.
The author has once again given us an amusing and cleverly plotted mystery, complete with lots of tea and cake. I love all the characters with their funny
names and how Mrs Churchill always gets herself into questionable situations. I especially like Miss Pemberley's further development and growth as a valued assistant detective (even if she can't figure out bakery sale prices).
I highly recommend the entire series, but I think you won't be lost if you started on this one
Thanks to Emily Organ for allowing me to pre-read this book.
Favorite unexpected line: "[The two dogs]...scampered off into the non-fiction section together."
Churchill and Pemberley series is one that I would take to a desert island as my one book choice! Reading The Teapot Killer was like being reunited with old friends! Churchill is still the same but Pemberley has evolved into a more established presence. The locals are an interesting kaleidoscope of personalities. It's an excellent mystery with lots of twists! Highly recommend this series!
A welcome return to the twi mature sleuths, Churchill and Pemberly. A great story that takes you around and Old English Countryside in a bygone era. Following the two ladies who stick their nose in everywhere to find the clues to catch the murderer.
So glad to have another adventure with Mrs Churchill and Miss Pemberley as well as the whole village. The mysteries within kept me guessing until they were revealed.
AMUSING PORTRAYAL OF A BUMBLING PAIR OF SENIOR CITIZEN DETECTIVES
I enjoyed the series and in particular Mrs Churchill - who reminded me so much of Margaret Rutherford's portrayal of a comedic Miss Marples in several mid century films!
Churchill and Pemberley are the perfect sleuthing duo. Between finding murder victims and taking breaks for tea and cakes these two are a quietly clever pair who find the the murderer each time.
It's been a long wait for book 9 in this series but it was worth it. These stories just meander along but always with a twist at the end. I've never known 2 ladies eat so much cake !!! Looking forward to #10
I had to wait for this one and was anticipating for quite a while.. I I've these two detectives. They should make a television series. Can't wait until the next installment.
These are by far my favorite characters. .so quirky and fun. Love to have a good laugh before I go to bed! Cannot wait til the next Churchill and Pembers escapade.
