Echoes Across Continents: A Memoir of Resilience Through Tumultuous Times

Rate this book
A sweeping saga that spans three continents and four decades.

K. D. Ray’s remarkable journey begins in 1931 with the death of his father, a prominent judge in India. At just eight years old, he returns to his father’s ancestral home with his mother and brother. Defying the family matriarch, his mother is cut off from the inheritance, but with the support of other family members, they settle into a modest new community. It becomes clear that education is his path to independence in a rapidly changing world.
Determined to achieve his dream of becoming a surgeon, K. D. Ray’s story takes him from India to England and Nigeria. He vividly describes the cultures and tumultuous times of each country, from WWII to India’s independence and the partition that fueled animosity between Hindus and Muslims. Along the way, he navigates a “forbidden” love.

After earning his medical degree in India, he becomes a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Against the odds, he is accepted into the British Colonial Service as an officer and is assigned to Nigeria, overcoming racism and jealousy along the way. He spends a decade there, with his wife and family, witnessing Nigeria’s independence and the political turmoil that follows. He rises to the rank of senior surgeon for the whole of Northern Nigeria and is the personal physician to the local emirs and the prime minister. A man of great principle and integrity, he often clashes with British officers and other physicians who see him as a threat. Yet, his moral purpose and integrity earn him powerful allies and protectors.

His memoir is a testament to resilience, capturing the essence of a life dedicated to overcoming obstacles and making a difference across continents.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

I switched between listening to the audiobook and reading the written version depending on what device I was on (phone vs laptop), and have to say that I would recommend the audiobook. The narrator manages to make this memoir feel more exciting, which was appreciated as I personally found it quite boring otherwise.

That's probably just an issue of this specific book just not being a good fit, because generally, the topic it deals with is of interest to me, and generally I enjoy reading memoirs, too. This also wasn't badly written or anything, and there were lots of interesting events and experiences in this book, so I'd definitely say that I am glad I read it. It just still felt somewhat dry, and it was difficult for me to concentrate, though I wouldn't be able to pinpoint why. Sometimes books just don't work even though objectively, they should, and I think this book is one of them for me. I would still recommend it to anyone interested in modern Indian history, as it spans quite a long period of time and allows glimpses into the political climate of various eras, the daily life at the time, etc. Again, it's objectively an interesting book, just didn't work for me.

KD’s story really gripped me and resonated with me. Honestly, I don’t think it holds any majorly unique developments compared to other biographies I’ve read, however, his perseverance, often against odds, really struck me. There was such a calm to the storytelling, practical yet seeking resolution but with confidence that all would turn out well and often times by KD doing the right thing and working hard at all he accomplished-family life included!
