Don’t look at the Fae. Don’t talk to the Fae. Stay away from the Prince.
Adeline Duvall was taught that her entire life and she heeded the warning. Fae were cursed after attempting to take over Bellhollow, making humans slaves hundreds of years ago. She believed them a cautionary tale and nothing more. Until she caught the attention of a Fae male. Cobalt blue eyes captured her every chance they got, eventually guiding Adeline to his side. With every moment together, she begins to question everything she has been taught about the Fae. Torn between duty and passion, Adeline will have to decide who to trust, the Fae who keeps calling her mate or the Prince who has taken interest in her.
I tried to finish it, I truly truly did but unfortunately couldn’t keep pushing myself anymore… Everything mentioned below in my earlier “not yet finished” review still holds true further into the book. And it seems a lot of people have echoed this in their own reviews. The only thing worth it in my opinion was the concept of fae being the slaves instead of the humans, but the execution was lackluster.

Thank you Maeve Kensington for giving me the opportunity to be one of your ARC readers.
I wanted to love this so much. It brings me so much joy to be able to connect to an indie author’s book and I take great effort and pride in writing my reviews for arc 🥺 It pains me to say so far this is not the case. I genuinely loathe having to write a bad review…
First things first let me say I have not finished reading the book yet… I’m about 35% in and reading all the other reviews I know I should probably DNF but I don’t know how to do that, and when I commit to an Arc, I do so no matter what.. Please also note I looked at said reviews AFTER I’d read the this far so it wouldn’t taint my opinion. I chose to check the reviews before finishing the book because I wanted to see if this was just not my vibe of writing and I was being overly critical or not, but sadly realized that a lot of people seem to echo my thoughts…
I had initially written a detailed partial review but I decided I will wait to actually finish the book so I can write a fair full review instead (however at this point don’t think my rating will improve).
For now i will just point out what I’ve noticed, which is the same as a lot of other people : - too much repetition/ filler - too many inconsistencies - no development wether it comes to the story, relationships, world building, etc. - nothing is left to imagination, no suspense, no mystery - Adeline is juvenile and is constantly contradicting herself, her internal monologue is EXHAUSTING/ Kieran is overprotective and aggressively sexual for no reason / Prince Archie is a spoiled brat/the other characters so far are not adding anything to the story - the interactions between the characters are awkward, disjointed, unrealistic and performative at best - I feel ZERO EMOTIONAL CONNECTION to any of the characters. Which has never ever happened to me…
I always strive to be as gentle as possible when giving constructive criticism for Arcs, because as an artist myself I know how hard it is to put your creations out there. Your work won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s perfectly fine 🫶 However I would be lying if I didn’t mention that some statements i read from the author on social media and the fact that this book feels more like a first draft than a finalized book, makes me a little upset 😞 I might be misinterpreting, but it gives me the impression the author wanted to publish a story as quickly as possible just to make a buck…
I will edit this review once I’ve finished the entire arc to make sure I give a fair judgment.

❄️fated mates ✨forbidden romance ❄️fae MMC x human FMC ✨curses ❄️ height difference
I considered DNFing this book so many times but I kept going and I wish I didn’t. I feel so bad to hate on books but this book needed to be heavily edited or something. Many of the sentences the main characters were saying were repeated and I felt the conversation between the two main characters were going in circles . I like that author was trying to keep this a slow burn but it didn’t feel like it especially there was obvious lust in their very first encounter . The writing was really dull . I felt bored and disconnected to the characters. The MMC was good and swooning at first but then he was just all talk no action so I started to cringe . The idea of the fae being the slaves was really really interesting but it just needed to be executed better
Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown is book one of the Kingdom of Bellhollow series. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Our FMC, Adeline, has grown up in a kingdom in which the Fae have been enslaved for longer than anyone can actually remember. The hate for the Fae ingrained in many of the villagers runs deep; several times we are told there is no proof of the cruelty and viciousness the king and prince claim the Fae possess. They accept it as fact because they are told to do so. Adeline even shares they are not able to research the history in the library because those who do ask questions are banished to a realm for criminals.
The MMC love interest, Kieran, is a Fae High Lord who has now found his mate in Adeline. He can’t openly court/be with Adeline because of the separatist expectations of the kingdom.
The male antagonist is a genocidal asshat I’m really hoping Kieran gets his hands on. I also kind of hope Adeline’s “bestie” goes down with him.
The story has a lot of promise and I look forward to seeing what happens in book 2; book 1 ended on a serious cliffhanger.
The biggest issues I’m hoping are resolved going forward are these: Adeline came across as a little dim-witted. 80% through the book and we’re still having the fated mates argument? Ok. I’m hoping this is a plot device and there is a really good reason for it. I have a feeling it is based on some events in book 1…but we’ll see. Because 80% of the book is Kieran saving her, helping her with every day tasks, and trying to convince her about the mate bond, the pace of the story DRAGS. It honestly felt stagnant until I approached the last 20% of the book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I didn’t think I’d finish this book in one day, but here we are. It wasn’t terrible, but it didn’t click with me. Adeline was just too naive and careless for me. Like, how many times are you going to get caught going to and from the forest?
To me, a lot of the book felt repetitive and seemed to slow progress down. Also, the few scenes where the MMC talked dirty just felt out of place. They were usually after a threat or, in one instance, it was a grief heavy scene and he started the flirting.
The prince can suck it along with Adeline’s family.
First off, I want to say that I am very happy to have had the chance to read this book as an ARC reader.
That being said, it did not live up to the excitement that I had going into it. The main characters were not believable, the MMC felt like he was mood swinging from caring and possessive to oddly sexual and the FMC perspective wasn’t ideal.
You can tell that it is the first time writing in this genre. Things were repeated way too many times. Winter is coming again and again, the baby is coming again and again. It was almost like the author doesn’t know how to build suspense and so she tries to tell us the suspense. I kept waiting for it to get better and it never did. The ending didn’t even feel like an ending to this book and is definitely not a big cliffhanger.
May just not be my cup of tea, but I wanted to give an honest review.
I’d like to start by saying that I was grateful to receive an ARC of this title. I dove in and was eager to see where and how this story would unfold. I had some issues with the lack of world building and the redundancy in plot points. The amount of times the FMC mentions the upcoming arrival of her sibling was painful to keep reading. The constant mention of the cobalt blue eyes seeking her out. The dialogue was also lacking and seemed very surface level.
I’ll be honest, this was unfortunately a DNF for me. I really wanted to try and push through but nothing was grabbing my attention. It felt more like a chore to continue reading. This might be someone else’s cup of tea however it wasn’t mine.
Thank you for much to the author for the opportunity of an ARC for this book! While I was VERY excited to start this read I unfortunately ended up DNFing it. The writing was very confusing and repetitive and the story lacked world building. I did think this was a great concept, just not executed well.
I am a sucker for a fated mates trope. The introduction to this fated mates trope was quick, straight to the point. Although the romance was slow burn the male, Kieran, knew Adeline was his fated mate and spent the whole book proving this.
With this fated pair, he obviously falls first. There is an interesting age gap (468 years old vs. 25 years old), fated but forbidden, fae male and human female. Did I mention he is the High Lord?!
In this book the fae have lost their magic and are slaves to humans due to a witches curse. The fae have spent hundreds of years trying to find how to break the curse but have never felt so hopeful until Kieran met Adeline. Humans interacting with fae is forbidden. The humans are taught to hate the fae. This makes Kieran & Adeline's relationship just about impossible. To add even more complication to this the human prince, Prince Archie, has his eyes set on Adeline to be his wife & will not take no for an answer.
The book is written from Adeline's POV. I loved how she's an older FMC who is very content with where she is in her life, minus Prince Archie forcing her hand. Adeline is faced with a lot of life altering events in a short amount of time. There is betrayal hidden around every corner, hidden agendas, and life changing events that will have you feel every emotion.
Thank you so much Maeve Kensington for the arc! This is my unbiased review!
So I started this book thinking I would read it over the next couple days… I finished it on one day! I couldn’t stop!
Adeline Duvall is a human living among the Fae. The fae are not to be trusted… or has that been a lie told to the humans of the kingdom? Adeline is a strong MFC, but also slightly naïve. She is very trusting of her inner circle, but unfortunately to her detriment. She has so much to learn and unlearn in such a short amount of time that she gets lost in her head. It doesn’t help that she caught the eye of the human prince. But in the end I really feel that she found her voice and what she wants.
Enter Kieran… damn this guy made me sweat 😅. He was the perfect MMC. Not only is he protective, understanding, and supportive, but the dirty talk he delivers is 🔥. I love how he gave Adeline space to figure things out and was perfectly fine waiting forever for her to decide. *adds another to the book boyfriend list*
I absolutely loved this book. The cliffhanger was ouch but we will survive!
This book has all the tropes we love:
•forbidden romance •touch her and ☠️ •fated mates •slow burn •protective MMC
First off, thank you so much to TAA and the author for the chance to receive an early copy of Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown.
Unfortunately, I just didn't click with the story like I hoped and this ended up being a DNF for me.
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧: - slow burn fantasy romance - fated mates - age gap - height difference - forbidden romance - he falls first and harder - possessive + protective mmc - touch her and die
4⭐️ 🫑 (no spice but some dirty talk/thoughts) **author has stated there will be increasing spice throughout the series**
Thank you to the author for an e-arc of this book!
The fae have been slaves to the humans for centuries. Adeline grew up knowing not to look at the fae, talk to the fae, don’t even think about the fae. One day though, a set of cobalt blue eyes captivate her and she can’t stop thinking about them.
The man behind those eyes calls her mate but he’s fae. Not only just fae, the high lord of the fae. But he’s enslaved like the rest of his people. She knows she should stay away from him, as it could mean the end of her life or her family’s but she can’t help it. The pull she feels towards Kieran is indescribable and she doesn’t understand it at all. On top of it, Kieran isn’t the most forthcoming about their bond.
But it’s illegal for Adeline to interact with Kieran or any of his inner circle, and eyes are everywhere watching her. Prince Archie also has his eyes set on Adeline and he isn’t used to not getting his way. Adeline wishes to stay as far away from him as possible, but Prince Archie won’t let that happened and Kieran is powerless to claim his mate. Not until the curse is lifted from him and the fae. Could Adeline be the key to finally breaking free and putting the kingdom back to where it was centuries ago: with humans and fae living in peace together.
This story has good bones and definite potential moving forward in the series. I will say there were definitely parts that got a bit repetitive. It felt like we got the same scene multiple times in the book. Also, for being 25, Adeline could be a bit naive at times and felt more like she was 16-17 instead.
I really liked Kieran as an MMC. He’s not your typical broody, “I like you but won’t tell you” man you read about. He’s front and center shouting that he’s her mate and that he already loves her and will do anything for her and I’m HERE FOR IT! Plus you can tell he has a great inner circle of friends that I can’t wait to see more from in future books. These are the people that have been through this curse and enslavement with him the whole time, through thick and thin.
There’s no spice unfortunately ☹️ there’s tension for sure and some dirty talk/thoughts from the MMC, but even getting a kiss was slooooow burn. Like glacial. lol. I’m kind of bummed by this. I’m all for slow burn but we’d get dirty talk from Kieran but then he was also the one holding back from even kissing her because he doesn’t want to curse holding him back. As someone who likes spicy reads, I was bummed there wasn’t any. The author has said though that the spice will increase in future books, so I’m hopeful for that. We have a major size difference between the FMC and MMC, so…that should be fun 😜
The ending was a bit predictable. I actually have a theory on something that hasn’t been addressed yet so I guess I will see if I’m right down the line 😝
Overall, I enjoyed the book and will continue reading the series as it comes out. I’m hoping we see Adeline do a lot of growing moving forward and I want to see her and Kieran’s relationship deepen too. Kieran in general, I am ready for his badass high lord phase for sure. I can already anticipate the power oozing from that man 🥵
“Don’t look at the Fae. Don’t talk to the Fae. Stay away from the Prince.”
This is an ARC review — thank you to Maeve and the BookFunnel team for the opportunity to be an early reader in exchange for an honest review!
I think this was a solid debut romantasy with a unique premise. The story hooked me early, though it dragged a bit between 35% and 85%. It was a bit repetitive at times and it lacked world-building and suspense development for me. That said, I’m definitely picking up the second book — especially after the ending!
Set in a world where a witch cursed the Fae, stripping them of their magic after her sister was betrayed by the one she loved, the Fae have spent 400+ years enslaved by humans. It’s illegal for them to even speak to humans now, let alone form relationships. Once rulers of the land, the tables have turned — and humans hold all the power.
Our FMC, Adeline, is an independent, family-driven commoner who catches the unwanted attention of the Prince. He’s cruel, manipulative, and clearly has ulterior motives. Homie is a straight trash goblin, and I sincerely hope Kieran takes him out in book two. Anyway… While the Prince is “courting” her, Adeline also draws the attention of Kieran — our fierce, protective MMC who just so happens to be the High Lord of the Fae. Plot twist: he’s her mate.
Their romance grows in secret, meeting under the constant threat of death or imprisonment. Despite the danger, Adeline can’t stay away from him. She’s strong, loyal, and driven, though at times a little naive — understandable given her lack of access to Fae history, but frustrating when Kieran and his crew never gave her reason to doubt them.
Now, their first meeting was… a choice. Kieran calling her his “naughty girl” right off the bat felt a little off, and while there were a few spicy remarks sprinkled throughout, none of them fully delivered. The tension and yearning built nicely, but when they finally kissed in the last 1%, it didn’t land with the epic payoff I’d hoped for — though maybe that speaks to Adeline’s inexperience in general since she said no men have ever paid her any attention in the past.
Lastly, I wish we’d gotten a clue about the witch’s identity (I’m still convinced it’s Avira) or made some progress toward breaking the curse.
All in all, this is a debut worth picking up, and I’m curious to see where the series goes from here.

Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown is a captivating debut fae romantasy set in a cozy small fantasy town with intriguing world building, plot twists, curses, twisted royalty, secrets and betrayal, and so much mystery that I can’t wait to unravel in future books. This story has a fated mates romance, found family, coming of age themes, ACOTAR vibes and beautifully written anxiety and grief representation.
I really liked the slow burning fated mates romance. It’s full of forbidden love and longing, tension you could cut with a knife, a centuries apart age gap, height difference (he is tall!), and a “who did this to you?” moment. The spicy banter is balanced with many sweet and tender moments and forehead kisses.
The MMC is a possessive, protective and mysterious dark fae who falls first and HARD. I loved how supportive, kind and understanding he is with the FMC. He is a rock for her, taking care of her and consistently reassuring her when she feels anxious. He is very much a burn the world for her vibes kind of mate, and I can’t wait to see what he will be like at full power!
The FMC is a sweet, curious, childlike, sometimes naïve, and mysteriously white haired human who struggles with anxiety. The anxiety representation was so well done, too! She slowly grows a little bit braver, a little more able to stand up to the abusive cruel prince, a little more self-assured in her anxious thoughts. I can’t wait to see her grow fully into herself, learn self defense skills and become a confident, strong leader. One of the things I loved most about the FMC is how neurodivergent coded she is. I could very much relate to her persistent anxious thoughts and rumination, having a social battery, deep love for nature and being outdoors, and enjoying her daily routine.
I’ve been so excited to read this book, especially when I heard the synopsis, but honestly it had me at fae romantasy! I’m invested and really looking forward to book two! Thank you Maeve Kensington for a copy of this ARC!
A Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown Kingdom of Bellhollow Book One By Maeve Kensington
⭐️⭐️⭐️
🥀Romantasy ❄️Age Gap 🥀Height Difference ❄️He falls first 🥀Slow burn ❄️Fated Mates 🥀Forbidden Love ❄️OTT Protective MMC 🥀He falls harder ❄️MMC has a filthy mouth 🥀Found Family
This first instalment of Kingdom of Bellhollow follows the tale of Adeline a human woman who has caught the eye of the prince which is very much unwanted. You see in their world there are also fae who have been cursed and are now treated horribly and the prince wishes to make it even worse once he becomes king and what's worse is that he has decided he wishes Addie to be by his side whilst he does it. But what he doesn't know is that Adeline may have also caught the eye of a fae, a fae that may be her mate and together they may just be able to break the curse and create a world of peace again.
This book for me was really hard to get through, I struggled to be completely honest. I loved the ideas, the direction the author was taking it, but it was just lacking for me, I feel a lot like this would suit a much younger audience like my daughter if I could ever get her to pick up a book.
Kingdom of betrayal and unknown releases July 22nd 😘🖤
This book wasn't the right fit for me, but it might be right for you...?
The story follows Adeline, a human woman raised to fear and avoid the Fae-until she finds herself caught between a human prince and a powerful, possessive Fae High Lord. Her pull toward the Fae male drives the central tension of the book. Unfortunately, I found this story lacking. With minimal world building and character development, and Addie's continued naivety, the story fell flat.
I struggled to feel truly immersed in the “world” Adeline lives in. The vocabulary didn’t seem to fit the setting with the use of modern terms and language, the dialogue was choppy and felt disjointed, and oftentimes the author would repeat information. These issues made it hard to “buy in” to the story.
The pacing was on the slower side for my taste, with not a lot of plot momentum or character development. I was really drawn to the premise and liked the idea of the story, but the execution left me wanting.
Not every book is for every reader-but for the right audience, this one may hit the mark.
I appreciate the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this story in exchange for an honest review.
Sadly, this was a DNF for me. I found multiple parts rather cliche and most of the writing to be amateurish.
For being 25, the FMC comes across as very naive. If her age had not been given, I would have supposed her to be 16 or 17 from the way she talks and acts. I got to 72% through and would classify it as YA or NA. There are times where modern language is used, like "Yeah, no", "teenagers", "you totally did", "make out", "broken record". I'm not the biggest fan of that in fantasy books. The story was interesting but it dragged in my opinion. There were quite a few scenes that didn't move the plot forward and I didn't see much of a purpose for. Until just over 60% through, most of the story was the MMC trying to convince the FMC that he's her mate and her not believing him.
*Fated mates bond *Hidden royalty *Rewritten history *Healing licks *Touch her and die *Protective MMC
Kieran is exactly the fae male I would want in my dreams. He was very protective of Adeline, has a filthy mouth and he falls first. The world was really interesting and I look forward to see where it goes. There are definitely characters that I hate and some I hope grows some more or the character is developed more. I am very intrigue by what the royal characters are up to because they are definitely up to no good.
I loved the banter, sweet moments and the tension between Kieran and Adeline. This book kept me turning the pages because I continuously wanted to know what was happening next….and that cliffhanger. Now I just have to try to be patient for book 2 to come out.
*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
Not sure of the time frame but the way the mfc talks is modern but this book doesn’t seem modern, for example, “I was weirded out.” I noticed a lot of the reviews mention the writing and repetition. I did notice that as well, mention of her mother being pregnant constantly and how strong fae are, I think if being mentioned once or twice would have sufficed. Also, the speaking, it’s very short sentences, doesn’t flow. The characters don’t really have many characteristics which makes it hard to dive into the story and get invested. I think it’s a fun and great concept. It will benefit with more development but I think the author has something special on their hands and they should not feel bad, I could never write a book, fantasy is hard to write, I think the author is onto to something. I so appreciate being able to read and be here with you on your writing journey and can’t wait to see how you grow.
I really wanted to like this book but unfortunately it fell short for me. The plot is unique and has so much potential. The characters are interesting but need more development and the pacing is quite slow. There are many parts that are repetitive and it felt like the book could be reduced significantly. There isn't much movement in the plot and when the potential for action arises, it is simply a teaser at the very end. Despite all this, I still really want to know what happens to Adeline and Kieran, and the curse!
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this novel early. All opinions are my own!
The longer I read this book the more I feel like I'm wasting my time. The dialogue is so weird and disjointed. It doesn't flow at all or sound natural or normal. And Addie is just a broken record of I hate the prince, I don't believe you, and telling everyone her mom is pregnant. At 56% I should have some idea what is going on. But there is no direction to the plot, minimal and very slow world building, and horrible dialogue. I'm trying to finish this but struggling. S. T. R. U. G. G. L. I. N. G. At 80% nothing has happened. Every time I'm about to dnf the author sprinkles a tidbit (emphasis on the bit) of plot to keep me vaguely intrigued. At this point there's 90 pages left I can power through but I know I'm wasting my time. I just want to book to be done to add to my 2025 book challenge. The most exciting part of this book was the last sentence. I am so happy to be done so I don't have to think about it anymore.
Thank you Maeve Kensington and the Author Agency for an ARC of this book.
Oh boy. First of all? That cliffhanger? I do need book 2 now!
Adeline is just a human girl who caught the eye of the cruel prince Archie, but she also captures the heart of our handsome hot Fae Kieran. Questioning everything she has ever been told about the humans and the fae, she soon realizes change is about to happen whether she likes it or not.
Storyline wise; I did feel like it was a bit repetitive, but honestly? I love Kieran so I didn’t give up. Also I was confused about timelines, because it felt more like during medieval times but stating, “I sound like a broken record” when records weren’t a thing till the late 1940s.
The book was still a great read! The author has so much potential and I look forward to reading more from her!
First, I am grateful to have the opportunity to read an ARC. It’s so cool when an author picks a normal person like myself to read and review a book.
The book itself was rather disappointing. The writing is incredibly disjointed and it feels impossible to feel any real connection to the main character and the story itself. It needs a lot of work and editing. There are run on sentences, horrible grammar, and tons of repetitive sentences. She overly explains things in a painfully uncomfortable way.
Adeline is our main character and she is unusually childish/naive for a 25 year old. She talks and acts like she is a not very intelligent 13 year old. She feels such a burden for her mother and the baby coming but it doesn’t exactly make sense at any point. There are things she does (like visiting Hellhollow) that just seem really unnecessary. If she almost died the prior year going there then why not plan better this time around? If she almost froze to death the first time then why not take the extra jacket? Yes, I’m aware she didn’t want to take it for money purposes but they sold all of their goods at the market. Be smart. However, she almost dies again. (Shocking.) Kieran finds her and saves her.
Archie. They clearly have had some interaction before but the way you lead into the relationship is so disconnected. I get it. He’s horrible. But there is no lead up. Just the assumption of a prior relationship that we are supposed to take as he’s just the worst human being ever. He may very well be just that but I would have appreciated some sort of actual story to support that. The first thing is simply that he shows her interest. Her view of that interest is just naive and absolutely dumbfounded. “Why does the prince have interest in me? Or does he? I’m just so confused all the time and have no idea what’s going on.”
The witch is introduced incredibly vaguely. How is it that humans got a hold on a witch to do their bidding exactly? The same for the fae who are supposedly still so strong they could snap your neck but at the same time they basically have an overseer with a whip? 8 foot beings with crazy strength who just submit. Clearly, there is an uprising coming but why has this been the same for so long?
Page 10 references “Even though I am an adult, I’m not married, which means I have to live with my parents. It is one of the laws of our land, a dumb one at that” Page 28 “Most unmarried women still live with their parents, or they move into housing for single women. Women who aren’t married can’t live on their own, it’s an actual law. I don’t know why, but I’m not complaining either.”
The issue I have with these in particular is inconsistency. There were things like this throughout the story where the author would tack on extra rules or laws or details that weren’t mentioned at first but seemed to change to fit the particular instance in the story. She also says it’s a dumb law but then later says she’s not complaining. That doesn’t make sense. Either you agree or you don’t.
Also, if the prince is the prince then wouldn’t he know these laws? He seems to not have knowledge of any of this because Adeline feels the need to constantly remind him that she lives with her parents and has to therefore ask permission. Granted, he could be that disconnected for sure or just not care but it does get really repetitive.
She references her mother as being in her late forties so let’s say she’s 48/49. That means she was 13 or 14 having her older sister because it mentions that the older sister is 35. Why such an age difference? The woman having 3 kids at such a great age difference seems unnecessary unless there is some greater purpose to the idea in this story.
Page 100 “Not when so much is riding on me getting everything we need.”
Why is there such an emphasis on Adeline taking on responsibilities? First, she IS an adult so she should have responsibilities but she comes off as a whiny teenager who just feels so stressed and tired and overwrought all of the time. She’s supposed to be a grown up.
If this is such a big market day and they have a ton of vendors why does she need to go to another town for supplies? Why is everything catastrophized? The author constantly contradicts herself. People are struggling so badly, yet they have everything they need just not what they “want”. Well that’s not really struggling, is it? Starving and not being able to get the things they need is struggling. Adeline is constantly frustrated with her situation but I feel like she lends absolutely nothing to making it better. Then in the next instance she is happy and content to walk in the forest and nothing needs to change.
The mate thing is throwing me. Is Adeline so naive she can’t gather what a mate is? So much so she’s convinced that Kieran is making a word up just to be confusing to her? It seems silly and if she doesn’t trust him, that’s totally fine. However, it’s hard to believe she can’t figure it out. She constantly says they have a connection. She knows what married people are so…surely you can deduce what that means. Right?
While we’re on the mates thing…let me say Kieran is way too vulgar sounding and possessive right off the bat to be attractive. He is very creepy and preys on Adeline’s naiveness. He also comes off very mocking and not in a good way. I think the author was trying to make him sexy, mysterious and possessive in a positive way but he fell incredibly short to me.
If Skylar really is Adeline’s best friend why is Adeline so self seeking and would rather give her bestie to the horrible prince? That’s incredibly selfish and horrible of the MC herself. She mentions it a lot of times and wishes that her friend could take her place. But if you truly believe the prince to be as vile as you’ve described then why on earth would you want that life for your best friend? It’s awful and not at all what I would want out of my main character if she’s trying to be a good person and genuinely cares about people.
Adeline also claims she can’t be with the prince because of his attitude towards the common and the fae…but her best friend also talks horribly about the fae. So why are they friends? Is one okay and not the other?
Page 151 “I honestly can’t remember whether he has told me what it is or not. Someone I’m destined to be with?” Back to the “mates” thing. This was ridiculous. Do you mean the thing you’ve been concerned about for weeks and weeks now you suddenly can’t remember if you even know if he’s told you what that means or not? Even though you have constantly mentioned it and asked and asked and all of a sudden you just can’t remember? Okay.
The ending was predictable. I won’t spoil it but it wasn’t surprising and needless to say the relationships between people were not developed enough for me to care all that much or even feel betrayed.
I do not feel like the story or the characters developed basically at all throughout. Yes, Adeline went from place to place and we learned certain things but it was not well thought out and felt like we were slugging through 4 feet of snow for lack of a better term. It was tiresome.
I’m sorry to say that this book was not a good read. I wanted it to be and I think there is good content in the story but the author needs to rewrite, reevaluate, and edit. A lot. I want my review to be critical with the intention of bettering her writing as I think any author should strive for. Not everything is going to be a 5 star read and that’s okay. Keep learning and keep writing. That’s the only way to improve and do better in the future.
I was lucky to be given the chance to review Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown of my own accord, through being offered an eARC.
The premise of this book was so intriguing and I really wanted to read it. The writing of some of the characters is done so well that I really found myself thoroughly despising them. I did find some sections feeling repetitive, but I enjoyed a lot of this story, and honestly want to see what happens next.
This just isn’t working for me, unfortunately, although I desperately want it to.
It’s really a pet peeve of mine when books are overly repetitive. And at 15% I think I’ve read almost once a page that 1) Addie has a sibling on the way 2) winter is coming 3) some info about the prince being either in another town or has a broken arm 4) the Fae are slaves and beneath the humans and 5) she’s looking for cobalt eyes every time she goes out. It’s just so hard for me to get past the repetitive writing.
Another thing is the dialogue feels underdeveloped. Like you cannot convince this girl is 26? She’s sounding 16. You’re telling me she has to do chores and ask to go on a WALK every single day? That’s her purpose in life? We know nothing else about her - she hasn’t mentioned having dreams or goals, just that she doesn’t like the Prince and she likes nature walks into the forest. They all talk so stiffly too, it just feels unnatural to me.
On page one or two, Addie says she has no idea what the fae are building. By page 12 she says they’re building a home for the Prince. Also it seems like the characters meet each other for the first time each time they interact. You’re telling me Addie lives in a small town and she needs to be reminded why Agnes knows her mother since childhood. Skylar, her BFF, doesn’t know every single detail of her life? Addie doesn’t really have any friends or a job????? In a poor town????
And in that note- this bff, Skylar. I met her once and decided I do not trust her. She seems to be hanging around simply because the prince for unknown reasons is talking to Addie. You’re telling me Addie hasn’t told her bff that the prince is giving narcissist, genocidal, abusive vibes? And if she HAS you’re telling me Skylar’s ok with that? Not to mention she tells Skylar she should entice the prince to get attention off Addie and she’s like you’re right I really should??? Are they dumb bc what about the prince is giving good guy vibes. Idk that whole scene with them was so weird. And based on reviews I read it seems to get weirder.
Lastly, meeting Kieran? That entire first interaction I was uncomfortable. SWEETS. That’s his name for her? And then this lovebombing about how she’s his entire universe (he doesn’t know her name) and he’d never hurt her and she’s like oh for sure yes I believe him - GIRL have some self preservation and a brain?
So unfortunately I got to 15% and decided to dnf because life is too short to read a 400 page book you don’t immediately love. I wish the author all the best going forward she seems genuinely so sweet and passionate about her writing and I see potential in it!! But someone with a red pen needs to get in here and make some edits before I would be able to continue. This may be someone else’s vibe and I truly hope it is! But it just isn’t for me :(

My actual rating is a 3.5, I wish we could put half stars 😒.
Addie is a single woman and living with her parents to help them prepare for the baby on the way. Throughout her entire life she was told the fae are cruel, terrible creatures but they are all slaves and have been cursed by a witch. So, why haven't they retaliated? Why don't they fight? Addie starts to question this more during one of her daily walks to the forest when she finds out she is mated to one. To make things more complicated, she can't explore much of what being a mate means AND the human prince has confessed that he wants to marry her.
Kieran (her mate) had my blushing sooo many times during this story. He is so sweet, protective, and wants nothing for the best for his love. He wants to take away all of her pain but also provide her a life where she doesn't have to feel like she is simply "getting by". I loved him so much! Ahh!
The three people that drive me up a wall are her best friend, her sister, and the prince! The prince thinks that he can get whatever he wants when he wants, her sister shows up when it is convenient for her, and her best friend is really shady. Ughh!
I FLEW through this story and enjoyed all the tension/suspense that constantly was building, however there were a few things that stood out to me that made me a little frustrated. There were several parts in the book that were very repetitive: parts about Addie's reasonings and doubts, Kieran's devotion, and some of her mother's cautioning comments about getting sick. Because of this, there were times that it felt like I was rereading an entire scene or chapter. I was hoping for a little more complexity versus getting the same thing every time.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and the plot was good but I wish there had been more too it. When I started to pick up on how the book was going to end I was literally shaking my fist in the air. The cliffhanger was great, but I just wanted more. I have full intentions of reading the second book because I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!
Thank you Maeve Kensington for allowing me to the read the ARC version of your book! I am excited for the second.
This was such an interesting debut novel from author Maeve Kensington! The characters are interesting, even the ones you’ll grow to loathe, the romance is an instant connection but the slowest of burns, with plenty of tension, the world building is just enough to bring the story to life while never taking you out of the story, and the twists and turns will keep you right on the edge of your seat! So if you’re looking for a book with all that and more I would definitely grab a copy of Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknowns today!
I have to say I really enjoyed our main characters in this book, especially Kieran I did love his protectiveness and willingness to let Adeline be herself and even encouraged her to try the things she loved. Adeline I like right off the bat, she was helpful and thoughtful to her family and the people around her, though I will say there were a few times when I wanted to shake her because for someone who first came off as so competent and thoughtful she had plenty of moment where I was a little shocked about why she would say a certain thing, or when she’d do something that she knew she shouldn’t but did nothing to try and hide what it was she was doing as if she wanted to get caught.
I also loved a lot of the side characters in this book! Kieran’s whole inner circle of friends and their banter was amazing and I can’t wait to read more about them! As for Prince Archie, Adeline’s best friend and really her family… well I just hope there’s some Karma coming their way in the next book!
Now I will say the romance of this book started off amazing! And I was really interested in seeing where the tension and chemistry between Adeline and Kieran was going to take us… except after their first couple of meetings it felt like they continually started their romance over…Again and again. I mean they’re still debating the fated mates aspect of their romance well into the book, and I felt the pacing got a bit too repetitive for me. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the romance and I did enjoy the ending though as big a cliffhanger as it may have been and it gives me hope that book two in this series is going to be an amazing read!
So this was a difficult one to rate. I was so excited about this book, however, it just didn’t quite live up to the excitement. There was a ton of repetition in this book, to the point where it became frustrating early on, and only continued more and more throughout the book. This was a difficult book to get engrossed with due to the lack of believability to the situations and the actions of the characters in the book. There were constant contradictions with what’s being told to us in the book and what the characters are actually saying and doing. The FMC is age 25 in the book, but her actions and thoughts come across more so of that of teenager, which is fine, but it doesn’t quite match what’s told to us. It’s so hard to review this one because while I could see where the author was going, I think the execution just wasn’t quite there yet. The extreme repetition was distracting, the way slavery was discussed didn’t sit well with me. There were a lot of unbelievable moments that just didn’t make sense, like reactions to things, especially to the slavery, was just very odd and off putting, even by the FMC. She mentioned seeing her mate being whipped and being thankful he could handle it without crying out and this was just odd and just not very believable, and this is just one example of difficult to believe situations. The blind acceptance of things came across wrong, almost as stupid, instead of naivety or it just being common and that’s what I think the author was trying to convey, however, that’s also where the unbelievable aspect makes it so difficult to connect with the book and the story. I feel like a lot of fantasy book “moments” were just sort of thrown in there and didn’t feel the chemistry between the FMC and MMC at all.

Thank you, Maeve, for providing me with an advance copy of Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown. I was enticed by this romantasy because of the height difference, as well as the “he falls first” trope.
We start the romantasy with Adeline explaining her curiosity of the Fae men and women, but is strongly discouraged by the other humans since the Fae had been “ruthless” centuries ago and now are essentially slaves to the humans. The Fae have no magic and their wings are hidden due to a hex by an unknown (to us and most of the characters) witch. Adeline feels an attraction to whom she later uncovers is the High Lord of the Fae, Kieran - but doubts the mate bond as she was taught how the Fae being duplicitous. Meanwhile, the human prince, Archie, attempts to court Adeline throughout the book, much to Addie’s chagrin. This story includes death of a parent, death, whippings (and not the sexy kind), betrayal of a friend, and a slow burn).
While I like the concept of the plot, it feels like the author was very repetitive at some points (Adeline’s doubt of Kieran) but also inconsistent on other parts. I noticed that she mentions Fae men AND WOMEN, but then halfway through the book there’s suddenly NO Fae women, but then we meet Zahra, a Fae woman. In one of the same chapters with Zahra, Addie asks one of the male Fae’s what happened to the women but then doesn’t get an answer. Another inconsistency was with the parentage of Kieran - I understood what the author was getting at, but it still was confusing. I’m glad that Kieran has patience because I would be so done with Addie by the halfway mark ngl.
This book ends on a cliffhanger with MANY questions left unanswered- who is the witch? Why is the human prince obsessed with Adeline? Why does the MMC say that she’s the key? As much as I want to know these answers, I sincerely hope the author does not have the plot of the sequel be as dragged out as this book - and I hope there are no unnecessary drama (such as what happened with Marvin).
Kingdom of Betrayal & Unknown is set in a kingdom where the fae have been stripped of their powers and are slaves to the humans. The human fmc, Adeline, is just out walking, minding her own business, and she feels the tug of a mating bond with a fae male, Kieran.
This book was an easy read! Between finding out who the evil witch was + trying to figure out why all the characters (her mom, sister, bff) were acting so strange had me flipping pages at lighting speed. However, overall the book did fall a little flat for me. The setting and plot had so much potential to be great, but the story never went anywhere. It was a wash and repeat of the same thing happening over and over…. Drama with the prince happened, she goes for a walk in the forest, meets up with Kieran, then has to hurry home. I was ready for some true action to happen!
I also felt it was strange that Kieran had some sexually driven dialogue in his first meeting with Adeline (which didn’t fit, in my opinion), but the story never gets spicy. The level of his dialogue definitely made me think there was going to be spice somewhere, but it never went there. I think it would have been more appropriate to leave out the spicy dialogue and just keep things romantic, with some elevated banter, vs the explicit dialogue.
Will I be reading book 2? Absolutely! I need to find out what the heck happens and if the poor fae break the curse and if Kieran puts that jerk of a prince six feet under for putting his hands on Adeline!
Thank you Maeve for allowing me to be a part of the Kingdom of Betrayal and Unknown arc team! This is my honest review of the book!
What a great fast paced read! I really enjoyed the premise of this book and do plan to read book 2! I did feel like the book was a bit too long in my opinion as there was some repetitive scenarios in here but still overall a great book! Hopefully the author will change that a bit in book 2 but I expected book 1 to feel this way given we are introduced into this new world and characters and understand the world building and back story about the Fae’s that the humans supposedly can’t trust.
The story is introduced with Adeline who is a commoner living in Bellhollow among the Fae that they are told they cannot trust due to the curse they were left upon by the witch and that they wanted to make humans as slaves. But turns out now the Fae are treated as slaves and got their powers taken away by the witch.
I like how Adeline was portrayed as a strong FMC in this book but she was a bit naive like moments in this book I was like c’mon on girl lol
But Kieran!? Oh man, I liked his character a lot! He was possessive, sexy, flirtatious, powerful and protective of Adeline. Not only is Adeline drawn by their bond and his gorgeous blue eyes, but she secretly starts to meet up with the Fae in the forest learning about the truth and how they can break the curse amongst the Fae’s.
I was not expecting the betrayal in this book! That caught me off guard for a minute but things are starting to make sense and was expecting a cliffhanger!
Thank you again to Maeve for the e-ARC! I did enjoy the vibes in here and look forward to book 2!
