I think I have cavities from how sweet this volume was. It was overflowing with heartwarming moments, seamlessly intertwined with the bittersweet tone that permeated the story. The author's ability to capture happy moments while layering them with subtle bittersweet emotions is nothing short of brilliant.

What I especially love about this story is that it’s not just centered on the romance between Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei; it goes deeper into their experiences of having to mature too quickly and how they navigate the myriad challenges of life. The quiet moments they share when they are together and genuinely happy are portrayed with such tenderness—it's simply perfect. This is truly how you create a compelling slice of life narrative.

Jiang Cheng surprised me throughout this volume with his newfound bravery, affection, and a heart overflowing with love. It’s amazing how love can transform a person. Witnessing him open up, coupled with his radiant smiles and infectious laughter, brought me such joy. He genuinely deserves nothing but happiness in his life.

Gu Fei also showed remarkable growth in this volume. He unveiled a softer side of himself, demonstrating just how deeply he cares for Jiang Cheng. Despite the heavy burdens of life that weighed on him, he never once complained; instead, he learned to lean on Jiang Cheng for support, which was incredibly heartwarming to see.

The development of their relationship was everything I had hoped for and more. They were irresistibly sweet, cute, and tender with one another. The way they communicated—so attuned and in sync—made my heart swell with happiness. Their laughter over silly things, along with their playful flirting, painted a beautiful picture of their connection.

In conclusion, this volume exceeded my expectations in every way, and I couldn't be more thrilled with how it turned out. I’m counting down the days until volume four releases!

THESE TWO ARE SO STINKING CUTEEEEEEEEE 😭😭 Y’ALL THEY ARE SO SMITTEN 😭😭

“Is there a difference?” Jiang Cheng asked. “I just wanted to let you know that I thought about it and I… I like you. A lot. And if you—”

“Come downstairs,” Gu Fei interrupted him.

Jiang Cheng blinked. “What?”

“I’m downstairs, outside your building,” Gu Fei said. “Come down for breakfast, boyfriend.”

This story keeps on managing to perfectly capture the free fall trust and butterflies of a first love better than anything else I have come across and I remain completely obsessed. The way that one or the other would catch a glimpse of skin or waist and just SPIRAL had me giggling so much lol.

Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei just being so delighted at being boyfriends made me smile so much in this volume. If there was ever two boys who deserved having someone on their team 100% its these two and they make such an adorably supportive little unit.

I can see the foreshadowing angst in their relationship though and my heart hurts for them already. Gu Fei can recognise that Jiang Cheng has the talent and drive to escape their poverty but doesn’t seem to see the same potential in himself because he has been forced to grow up and take on so many responsibilities too early. Meanwhile Jiang Cheng is just so smitten he thinks that Gu Fei hung the stars in the sky.

As cute as these two are, it wouldn’t be Sa Ye without some heavy emotional stuff. As much as my heart hurt for Jiang Cheng in this volume with how things played out with his father, I actually appreciate how real this plot was because sometimes there is no redemption arc; sometimes people are just haunted by their addictions and their addictions win.

Probably one of the slower volumes (with some shining moments) but I suspect this was a bit of a ground work volume to lead into the tail end of the story.

I remain steadfast in my commitment to patiently wait for the releases and not cave to reading the fan translation! Even I am impressed with my restraint at this point!

I want one look to last a lifetime.

My boys Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei are back, with more shenanigans and more feelings in this slice-of-life danmei that continues to bring me so much joy! I’m so glad I haven’t read this in public because I was laughing out loud so much at these two doofuses; bless their souls.

The boys now enter into the “boyfriends” territory, and it’s such an unexpected delight to see them stumble and fumble through these entirely new experiences. Life dealt them such a hard hand, forcing them to grow up and mature way too early, so it was refreshing to see them behave as proper (and properly horny) teenagers. I loved the clumsy way they navigated their feelings, with every little gesture feeling new and overwhelming - and when it came to talking about sex, oh boy 😂 Talking is a too generous word, to say the least, and I was cackling! They are such hooligans but so utterly sweet. The way they keep calling each other “boyfriend” like they’re savoring it?? So precious! ❤️

(btw I’ve seen quite a few choice words for a penis around, even names - yuck - but “his root of all evil” was new and had me in stitches because dear Gu Fei, you’re kind of not wrong at all 😂)

I truly enjoyed some of the plot points keeping the story of their life going, and especially how no situation feels so dire (unlike in book 1) because the boys are learning to lean on each other and face everything together. Quite effortlessly, they’re there for the other, no question.

Gu Fei, though... he’s seriously pulling at my heartstrings the most. I adore how incredibly genuine he is in his affections for Jiang Cheng, how selfless he’s in general. He’s just kind of floating through life, not expecting any better out of his future in this bleak small town, being hopelessly resigned... while cheering JC on and wanting the best for him. He’s such a pure soul, and I need to see him have the opportunity to spread his own wings 🥺

And Gu Miao...oh, that kid will be the death of me. I was so glad to see more of her and to get some more insight into her situation, but it also continues to break my heart.

Now, when it comes to the slice-of-life stories, there’s a fine line between engaging while nothing dramatic happens and flat-out boring. And I definitely can’t say I’ve been bored, but I wished for...something. I have to admit, however much I love the characters, the story is losing at least some of its traction for me. I’m not sure if it’s my inherent need to see my beloved characters suffer some more (just so I could watch them overcome it all together, I swear!), but all in all, it’s preventing me from giving the full-star rating.

Still, the last three chapters had me alternately grinning and tearing up, and I can’t wait to read the next volume - we’re just halfway through! I can feel some potential storm-clouds gathering on the horizon...but I don’t doubt the boys will weather it all, in the end.

It wasn’t that Jiang Cheng felt so lonely, or so isolated, that he needed to find a random whoever in this place to begin a relationship with. It was only because it was Gu Fei. Whatever kind of relationship it was, the premise was that it had to be Gu Fei.

Boyfriend word count in this volume: 40 🥰. So adorable watching them navigate this new relationship and experience lots of firsts together!

On a reread, it's easy to recognize a few sprinkles of sad things headed our way. Seeing signs of Gu Fei having caregiver fatigue at only 17 years old is heart wrenching. I'm so glad he has his friends and Jiang Cheng for support.

Also, just want to add that Jiang Cheng has the best homeroom teachers and the best best friend and now of course, the best boyfriend.

Perfection.

The chemistry between Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei is out of this world. Surprised their wasn’t literal steam coming out of the pages in this volume.

I forget they are fictional characters because they feel like real people so much.

It was so satisfying watching their romance develop and them mature and grow as a couple and as individual’s.

Very excited for volume 4.

I swear I love them more & more each book, they’re so freaking sweet & perfect for each other. Just had me sitting here smiling the whole entire book, and the matching tattoos 🥹 I love how close Jiang Cheng is with gu miao too, they’re so cute

I seriously hate all of Jiang Chengs family (both bio & adoptive)-they really suck so bad. He deserved so much better than what he got, but I’m glad he has Gu Fei

Fav parts:
Jiang Cheng smiled back. For some reason, whenever he saw Gu Fei smile, it made him want to smile too.

- Been staring at me more intensely than usual today, huh, boyfriend?
Jiang Cheng smiled and shot him a glance. Gu Fei’s head was still down, looking at his phone.
- why don’t you look at me
- I like the way you keep staring at me like this. “Why?” Jiang Cheng asked quietly, still slumped over his desk. “Makes me feel grounded.”

He wondered if there was anyone else like him, who’d grown a full body of thorns from the process of being continuously put down.

there's something special about seeing two lonely, isolated people coming together to become each other's unwavering support. loved seeing jiang cheng and gu fei finally becoming boyfriends - and especially loved that gu fei, despite all his doubts about the future, fully threw himself into this relationship with jiang cheng.

this volume is strewn with sweet moments - food dates, matching tattoos, birthday celebrations - and they contrast with the darker moments, like gu fei experiencing caregiver fatigue with gu miao and jiang cheng being utterly failed by his family. they've both been forced to grow up and take on burdens way beyond their age, but they get to experience being light-hearted and silly with each other, as well as the highs of first love. i also like how they both genuinely admire each other and want the best for each other's futures - there are implications that gu fei has kinda given up on thinking of a future for himself, hopefully we get more insight into that in the upcoming volumes.

Words can’t quite capture how much I adore these two. They’re so precious, and being so young, they’ve already been through far too much. I'm cheering them on as they take new steps in their relationship, but I can't shake off the fear that it might all be fleeting, that something painful is waiting just around the corner. (Please, let me be wrong.)

4.4/5 🌟

"I want to Run Free without a care in your eyes. I want one look to last a life time." - Gu Fei

"Oh. I remember now... I really really like you. A lot. I never liked anyone like this before."
- Jiang Cheng

Oh my heart! T^T The romance in this novel is PEAK! It's so beautiful to see how two boys in a broken world find healing in each other; running towards each other, fiercely and longingly looking at each other. Their gazes never looking away!

The way they have much better communication than so many damn couples in so many other novels just baffles me! They're more grown up than most other couples!

Their communication is without fear, but so tender at the same time. Every caress, every hug, and every kiss saying a million words like that of a painting: I love you.

"It wasn't that Jiang Cheng felt so lonely, or so isolated, that he needed to find a random whoever in this place to begin a relationship with. It was only because it was Gu Fei. Whatever kind of relationship it was, the premise was that it had to be Gu Fei." 😭💘

Though I enjoyed so much of this volume, there were things that frustrated me about it as well.

I don't understand why Jiang Cheng felt obligated and just gave so much money to his dead beat dad. I don't understand why he, as a teenager with no job and still in high school, would have his dead beat brother coming to him for funeral expenses.

The fact that Jiang Cheng gave him money for it, it's just so weird to me. All of this may be because of culture differences, but it still really bothered me. Gu Fei told him to give him the money and let him spend it however he wants, that's just so crazy to me!

Their dead beat father always insulted them. For all they know, their father could have been a two pump dude and he seeks rewards for it from his children whom he abuses? Excuse me??

I just feel so sad for JC... The trauma that he will live with because of a certain event that happened in this volume. 😢

Another thing, and this is a personal preference... I'm not a basketball gall. So those scenes were just meh to me. But I get that it created an established founding of how JC and Gu Fei trust each other. How they coordinate so well with gestures only— sharing the same brain, pretty much!

Anyway, excellent read overall!

May I say... I KNEW IT!! I KNEW XX WOULD BOTTOM FIRST!!! ₍₍⚞(˶˃ ꒳ ˂˶)⚟⁾⁾
I'm looking forward for when XX will have YY's booty and waist in his hands. Teehee!

Not me singing "Birthday sex.. Birthday sex" 🎶 from back in my day! (๑≧▽≦๑)o That "Sexy Sheet" will forever be a tool for Gu Fei to never endingly tease and embarrass Jiang Cheng! XD that thing is gonna pop up everywhere. Lmao

“I want to run free without a care in your eyes. I want one look to last a lifetime.”

description

You don’t have to have lived Gu Fei and Jiang Cheng’s life to feel the truth in their story—you just have to recognize it. There’s a raw honesty in the way their world is portrayed that hits harder if you’ve ever seen places like this up close. Some readers might not get it, especially if they’ve only known comfort. They might think it’s exaggerated or unlikely. But if you’ve brushed against the harder edges of life, it’s not only believable—it’s familiar. Some people really do grow up in places like this, with less, with pain stitched into the day-to-day. And sometimes even characters like Gu Fei and Jiang Cheng, who are barely hanging on, are still doing better than others.

What makes this volume work is how it quietly builds emotional momentum without shouting for attention. Every conversation, glance, and shared moment feels lived in. The writing isn’t chasing drama—it’s tracking the slow, steady burn of two people figuring out how to hold space for each other. There are no grand confessions or cinematic declarations, but that’s the point. The emotional tension simmers through casual teasing, silent understanding, and the kind of intimacy that sneaks up on you. It's subtle, but never flat.

The pacing is deliberate, sometimes almost still, but that's part of its strength. It gives space for the characters to breathe, stumble, and inch forward without needing constant plot twists to stay compelling. The connection between the leads feels tactile and real—even when the story fades to black, the emotional weight lingers. It's not flashy, but it sticks with you. For readers who want real depth, who appreciate quiet truths over spectacle, this volume delivers.

I'm just gonna write a collective review for volume 1-3 since I binge read this anyway.

Ahh I loved this so much. Gu Fei's and Jiang Cheng's relationship is absolute perfection. Their constant teasing and bickering, yet still having shy and romantic moments like young lovers ahh I love books like this so much.

The way their relationship progresses is so natural. How they are just always taking one step at a time, testing the water, and slowly inevitably getting closer... Ahh this is so precious.

Normally I hate reading books before the whole series is out as I am impatient, but I've heard so many good things about this one that I just couldn't wait. I can't wait for volume 4 to come out.

This two are the only thing in my mind. I'm obsessed. They are my personality now. Going to tell about them to all my friends like a mormon preaching my new religion.
A thing that I really love of their relationships it's how silly they are together. It's so fun.

In short, the third volume is better than the second one, but still worse than the first one.

I think the atmosphere of the first book is nearly impossible to replicate; the gritty writing, a bunch of self-contained stories that manage to push the narrative forward, the very relatable portrayal of rowdy teenagers and their complicated feelings - it was great, but I feel like the longer the story goes on, the more charm and emotional weight it loses.

Obviously, I'm still a big fan; it was so easy to read this in less than a day. I just wish the author elaborated on the characters' psyche more, or maybe used more pointed words? At points, it felt like events were being served to the reader one after another. The lines between intentional briefness and unseasoned writing got a little blurry; especially in connection to the Li Baoguo storyline. The story would benefit from having introduced his health struggle a bit earlier, maybe even in the second volume.

The relationship between Gu Fei and Jiang Cheng is great. I like the constant reminders and (maybe) foreshadowing regarding what their biggest struggle and conflict might be in the future. I'm actually happy to see that Gu Fei isn't the type of a person to deny himself joy in the moment because "it might end badly" at the end. What I enjoy reading about the most is those two sticking together in the face of negative situations, so I'm not sure I'd enjoy this sort of angst, at least not at this point in the story... lol

Even though it seems like my review is mostly negative, I am actually happy with this installment. Sa Ye is in my top 3 favorite danmei right now and I'm rooting for it to keep that spot. If the future volumes feature less repetitive scenarios, there's a good chance it will!
