Fresh out of the emergency room, a newly humbled Wei Yanzi is convinced he finally understands Gu Yiliang. The man is elegant, thoughtful, and far too composed to even consider passion. So when they return to their room, crawl into bed, and settle in for the night, Wei Yanzi assumes there’s nothing more to it. Then Gu Yiliang kisses him on the forehead!
Stunned, Wei Yanzi realizes he’s discovered a new law of the universe: every time he thinks he’s figured Gu Yiliang out, the man does the exact opposite. Concerned the kiss has thrown their relationship off-balance, Wei Yanzi resolves to meet Gu Yiliang with a little sweetness of his own—after all, he can’t afford to lose to the co-captain of his ship!
But intentions only go so far. When the two attend a boozy cast party, restraint starts to slip and desires rise to the surface. Will someone finally act? Or are some of the universe’s laws too tricky to understand?
This series is so cute! I love the art (especially the Chibi versions of the characters 🥰). The 2 MCs take pretty big steps and make progress in their relationship in this volume. I love jealous Gu Yiliang! He’s adorable. Wei Yanzi remains the cutest.
It's kind of frustrating giving up on a series 4 volumes in, especially when there's only one more to go. But the reality is that I was pushing myself through the previous two, waiting for it to give me the same fluttery enjoyment of the first volume.
What's frustrating, too, is that this truly did have potential. There were things I still liked in this volume - the art can be really cute and funny, and I love the grumpy chibis. Wei Yanzi is so interesting, too; the serious/dramatic stuff with Gu Yiliang's family in the first volume was some of the best material, and I was intrigued by the stuff in this one with Wei Yanzi's sponsor/sort of father.
But instead of going into more detail with any of that, this was just a mess of wordplay jokes that really don't land when localized into English, and a relationship jump that honestly felt way too fast and out of nowhere. Which I realize it maybe a bit silly when it's the fourth volume of a five volume series, but you still have to actually build chemistry before characters sleep together????
And for me, the chemistry has just not gotten there.
Wei Yanzi is still mostly acting like an RPF shipper rather than an actual dude in a budding real life relationship, which was funny and cute in the first volume but was something I expected him to grow out of more by this point. It makes the whole series feel more like an RPF fever dream - and not even a well-written, realistic-sounding fic! - than an actual romantic storyline.
Meanwhile, Gu Yiliang is manipulating Wei Yanzi into sleeping with him, which caught me by surprise and ruined a lot of the cute/funny parts of this volume. All the bits with him being mean and jealous were a bit over the top, but the sweet parts with him being affectionate and unguarded and "a cute drunk" were him actively playing up the character because he'd realized it worked well on Wei Yanzi.
And then sleeping they were having sex?? Drunken sex, which isn't necessarily a no for me in the context of a story, but there were a lot of other elements that just made it not work at all for me on an emotional level.
So yeah. Disappointed. I guess I should've dropped it after Volume 2, since I didn't particularly like that one either, but I kept waiting for that magic of Volume 1 to come back. This one finally convinced me that's not happening.
The ship volume meter is back with highs and lows, though it alters pretty drastically and very quickly (in the most hilarious way possible as usual). Wei is determined to keep Gu by his side, resulting in some rather hilarious antics and causing Gu to get rather jealous when he suspects others may earn the same treatment from Wei. Things go much farther than anticipated with a little liquid courage added into the mix, though thankfully both boys are entirely aware of what is happening. Gu's internal panic over being a good boyfriend when he thinks he's completely failed to be a good sponsor is another highlight, and one of the few pieces we get from Gu's perspective rather than Wei's given Wei typically narrates most of the series. The series isn't over yet though, nor is filming, which thankfully means we're likely to see a lot more shenanigans and drama as these boys slowly figure things out and hopefully get on the same page sooner rather than later in a more official capacity.

3.5. definitely still cute and funny, and follows the vibes of the previous volumes. however them kissing/hooking up felt kind of sudden considering only one of them was drunk. and neither of them knew they actually liked each other. but maybe that was the push they needed? idk.
i didnt think this volume was as funny as the previous ones but it was still good

The translation continues to be a confusing mess, but I’m still enjoying it. It’s really satisfying to finally see these two make progress in their relationship here and I am excited to see the conclusion in the next volume!
