OH BROTHER

With the aid of the fortifications Van erected for them in the heart of enemy territory, Scuderia successfully takes down the Yelenettan border fort! Just to be sure Yelenetta never reclaims their captured outpost, Van decides to transform it into a Japanese-style castle. Problem is, a castle needs a lord--and Van has his own town to take care of. Enter Van's older brother Murcia, freshly exiled by their father just as Van once was! Is this just the lucky break Van needs--or a sign of more family drama on the horizon? One way to find out!

Another new battlefield gain, another new construction project. The young baron doesn't particularly enjoy being stuck on the front lines of the current conflict, no matter its ebbs and flows, but one thing is for certain: Van will never turn down a fresh opportunity to build an exquisite new stronghold on variable terrain.

EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE v5 is all about Scuderia's long-term aspirations, as well as how Van's role in facilitating these aspirations will doubtlessly funnel new and assorted obligations down toward his tiny barony. Van isn't averse to Scuderia taking on Yelenetta in a battle. He's actually quite pragmatic about it (e.g., More territory for King Dino means more opportunities to acquire new foods, new spices, and new personnel.). The challenge? The hunger for war and conflict permeates the nobility to an unprecedented level.

The current volume, despite still not offering readers a functional map, incorporates a broader worldview that fits quite nicely with the expanding conflict between Yelenetta and Scuderia: officials in the technologically advanced Solstice Empire (across the sea, on the Central Continent) aim to turn Yelenetta and other territories into vassal states. While closer to home, officials in Yelenetta and Scuderia aim to use the regional conflict to level-up their standing with their kings. In EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE v5, opportunism abounds, as both allies and foes see battlefield success as the primary vector through which they may acquire future wealth, land, and influence. Van, of course, couldn't really care less.

War positioning aside, the current installment actually begins with Van building a new castle stronghold, rather than concluding with it. On the opposite side of the Wolfsbrook Mountain Range, in what is still Yelenetta, Van sunders a regional outpost and rebuilds a massive replica of Kumamoto Castle. The new fortress city offers a good view of the surrounding area and can house up to three thousand people, "to function properly," he says.

But the creation of this new city isn't the fun part. The fun part is everything that happens afterward: Murcia, Van's eldest brother, is kicked out of home and forced into service (and ends up at the new castle); Van and his crew go on a recruiting spree, to acquire craftspeople, nobles, and adventurers to staff the new estate; and the folks at Yelenetta, who have no idea what's going on, stage a counterattack with some fancy new weaponry that forces Van to raise an eyebrow with modest intrigue. Ironically, by building a new stronghold, Van has made more work for himself on the frontlines, but if it's all in the name of territory defense, maybe that's okay.

The action is fairly limited, as much of what occurs in EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE v5 concerns moving characters from one location to another, and thus accruing knowledge that would further despoil their enemy's plans. A new chivalric order? (Murcia seems reluctant to take a commanding post.) More scheming opportunists? (Van's other brothers, Jard and Sesto, are careless idiots.) Childish enthusiasm? (More and more people are taking Van's outrageous ideas in stride.) The novel isn't quite clear on whether Van will be forced to follow King Dino's push deeper into Yelenetta (and thus, farther from the barony), but the novel is abundantly clear on the awkward, funny, and expanding intelligence its young protagonist brings to each problem he aims to solve: "I refuse to follow the orders of some overweight middle-aged men and risk my life for them" (page 108).

Great

I like he story so far. I enjoyed how Van keeps moving on to create not only new things but new ventures to help his territory to grow further. Murcia is going to grow stronger with the help of Van but the other two brothers seem to be delusional.
