Hitsuzi Yamada (山田 ヒツジ, Yamada, Hitsuzi) is a Japanese cartoonist, best known for the manga series The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today, which debutted in 2018.
There’s no denying the inherent appeal of this series’ emotional core. Nishina figuring out her life leads to a series of sweet moments with her former bandmate and a cute interlude where she shows off what she’s learned from Yukichi.
It’s also tangled up in a very lame subplot where Saku thinks Yukichi is either going to leave her or kill her, that the manga thinks is funnier than it actually is. There’s a coziness built in to this series that it might be trading on a little this volume.
I mean, I like this interconnected neighbourhood that we’ve built up over the many volumes, but I also don’t know that Nishina’s muse for a song she wrote years ago necessarily had to be Yukichi, sweet as it is.
Sometimes this works - the kitten that Yukichi and Yume saved becoming first a social media sensation and then… well… you really need to see it to believe it…? That’s pretty cute and I am always down for a playful slam on magical girl shows.
There are just a couple too many ‘okay’ chapters this time out, like a four leaf clover contest and a Morse code thing, that don’t really lead anywhere. Not to mention potentially yet another super-intelligent cat, although that does offer an obstacle for Saku’s unlikely love life.
Still, many manga have an off volume. And this one still has lots of sweet moments that do tug even my frayed and worn heartstrings. Plus, yuri bait or no, Nishina’s crush on Saku will never not be adorable to me.
3.5 stars - sometimes you just can’t quite reach the level of your best work and that’s fine. An overall unremarkable volume with some bright moments to elevate it.
I’ve been waiting a while for this one to come out, so I was very excited to finally read it!! It was fun and I adored all the Umyu-Sea stuff at the beginning, but I feel like later in the book, it took a dip towards being much less interesting and funny. I don’t really like Rio, so that’s the main thing I disliked. But, I still enjoyed it, all in all a good read! If you like the series you’ll totally enjoy this ✨
(This book contains a girl taking a shower, (her body is covered mostly), hints of a girl crushing on another girl, and the use of some slightly mature words, as well as alcohol. I would give it an age rating of 11+!)
I felt so lost in this one and kept putting it down but I finished it! It’s moving a way a bit from the main dynamic and I’m kinda sad so the ending was kinda funny cause yeah it felt like that was happening in way. I might stop collecting here, 10 is a nice even number.
