Lainey Adams, a master at people-pleasing, can’t remember the last real job she’s held. Between filling in at the general store and waiting tables at her brother’s diner, she’s always adapted to meet everyone else's needs, forgoing her own career. When an unexpected injury leaves her dad’s fishing boat without a captain, she bears the weight on her shoulders to save the family business.
When she spots a sports car stuck in a ditch, she’s intrigued because newcomers are a rarity in this small town. Upon realizing it’s Tate, the boy, now man, she hasn’t spoken to in ten years, she’s filled with mixed emotions. After all, he’s the boy that stole her heart every summer for twelve years only to leave it broken in the end.
Tate Matthews thrives on order and predictability. When he catches his girlfriend cheating on him on the day he was planning to propose, it uproots his plans for his future. Feeling aimless, he returns to his grandfather’s seaside cottage in the eccentric town of Widow’s Wharf, the town that holds the glistening summers of his youth and the one girl who has always remained at the forefront of those memories.
Armed with a plan in place to fix the wear on the family cottage from being a seaside rental over the last decade and a newfound purpose, Tate begins renovations. When he finds a faded letter with a vague message to meet at a lighthouse that no longer exists, his interest is piqued.
Will Tate be able to solve the mystery of the letter? Will it be enough to bring Lainey and Tate together again? And most importantly, will Tate be able to help Lainey see her true worth?

WOW! This was the perfect romance, there was no 3rd act breakup and no miscommunication 😭🙏🏽 Short and easy read, no language no spice only kissing. Small town romance, childhood friends to lovers, Dual POV, Dual timeline with the grandfather of the MMC and his summer love in 1963, 🤗 absolutely perfect love story. The side characters were hilarious, lots of LOL moments. Emotional moments as well I found myself tearing up a few times. Swoon worthy read for sure! Hoping this turns into a series featuring the brothers of the FMC 🤞🏽🤞🏽
I saw this book on Instagram and decided to give it a chance. Kelsey was sweet enough to accept me to be part of her ARC team for this one and I'm super grateful for it.🙏🏼 Thank youu!
Tate is faced with a pretty shocking moment when, instead of following his plans of proposing to his girlfriend, he is forced to breakup with her. Why? Because he did him very wrong and cheating on him.
He decided to go to his hometown house to deal with some things and to clear his head, but there he will see again the one that got away, Lainey. From there on, they'll both have a hard job in ignoring their feelings, trying to keep the grudge for what previously happened between them. But can they be strong enough to fight against those crazy feelings and beautiful bound?
It was pretty interesting to see how Lainey was trying to fight her feelings for Tate, because she never stopped having something for him. It was like all those years apart didn't even exist, their love stood steady against the test of time. Tate was hurt after having his expected dreams blown apart, but little did he know that a small town and the girl of his dreams will show him that there's so much more than he ever imagined.
This was a hopeful read, with characters which considered they had what they wanted in life and didn't realize that they could have even more if they could actually accept that there's more to life than what they had limited themselves to. Also, this book had some suspenseful parts too, which added a bit of flavour to this story.
A heartfelt thank you to @kelseywhitneywrites and @bookedwiththeemilys for the #gifted book!
This charming romance marks the beginning of the captivating Outer Banks series.
Tate leaves the chaos of the city behind after discovering his girlfriend’s betrayal, seeking solace in the small town that holds cherished summer memories and a lost love—Lainey. As their paths cross again, the chemistry between them ignites, creating an enchanting second chance romance.
I absolutely adored the journey of Lainey and Tate as they navigated their rekindled relationship. The author masterfully brings the quaint town of Widow’s Wharf to life, filling it with vibrant characters that will make you laugh out loud—especially the unforgettable Lucille! Lainey's close-knit family adds layers of warmth and depth, showcasing a beautiful dynamic. Tate’s neurotic tendencies paired with Lainey’s strength create an unforgettable duo that’s relatable and endearing. This story is all about pursuing your dreams and embracing life’s unexpected turns.
If you’re a fan of second chances, charming small-town vibes, and delightful characters, this book is an absolute must-read. Get your copy now!
If you ever just want a feel good romance this is the one. I LOVED the role reversal in this where the FMC is the one everyone goes to for everything and the MMC is the “city boy” type. You will fall in love with Laniey and Tate as their second chance romance and overcoming childhood struggles blooms into something beautiful.
2.5 stars but rounded down because a 3 felt too much :/ maybe this would have been better for a different reading phase for me but I’m feeling burnt of the small town romances- esp 2nd chance romances. So take this review with a grain of salt. I think overall, the story was good but just didn’t hit any of the “literary genius” or “uniqueness” categories for me. :(((
This book was such a perfect summer escape! Chidlhood friends that lost touch over years and always wondered what if. It’s a heartfelt story with a touch of fate. The story is set in the small beach side town of Widow’s Wharf, a fictional town set in the Outer Banks.
Tate spent his summers growing up in Widow’s Wharf. His best friend Lainey grew up there. Tate coming back home this summer to escape to his grandfather’s cabin brings back all those summer memories the two of them had. I loved the little mystery of the letter found while restoring his grandfather’s cabin. This second chance romance is a perfect beach read for the summer.
“I feel like I’m a kid again, just living one day to the next in an endless summer with you.”
If you're looking for an ideal summer romance... this is it. Right away I was drawn into Tate and Lainey's story. After Tate catches his girlfriend cheating on him right before he planned to propose, he decides he needs to get out of town quickly, so he heads back to his grandfather's run-down cottage in the seaside town where he spent his summers growing up--- and finds himself face to face with his former best friend Lainey after years of not speaking. These two had a really easy chemistry between them that I couldn't help but enjoy... I loved how he wanted to take care of her in the way that she cared for everyone else. I also loved all the little mishaps that seemed to come his way... those moments kept me laughing while the romance was tender and emotional to balance it all out. There's also a hint of a mystery with a found old letter, which gives us a secondary romance to fall in love with too. This story truly was a beautiful one with all the summer vibes and a quirky seaside town that I find myself wanting to visit again! This is the first book in the series, and I cannot wait to see what is going to happen next.
Sea La Vie is a closed-door romance with kisses only.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
this was such a delightful, emotional, and heartwarming read. tate completely stole my heart. he’s the definition of a golden retriever hero. even in the face of his own heartbreak, he was all in for lainey. i adored how he recognized the invisible weight she carried and made it his mission to remind her that she doesn’t have to do it all alone. his tenderness, patience, and unwavering support made their love story feel so safe and swoony.
lainey was such a strong heroine. the way she constantly put everyone else’s needs before her own was both heartbreaking and admirable. she’s so capable, selfless, and incredibly loving and watching her slowly learn how to accept help and open her heart again made for such a beautiful character arc. her independence made her real and you can’t help but love her for it.
the romance is a slow burn done right. tate and lainey’s second chance at love was full of vulnerability and deeply emotional. i loved watching them take accountability for the past, rebuild trust, and fall in love all over again. the side characters added so much more charm to the adorable small town of widow’s wharf. eden and henry’s mysterious history has me dying for more, and lucille had me laughing out loud. there’s so much sunshine and soul packed into this beachy romance, and i can’t recommend it enough.

thanks to the author for a gifted copy. my thoughts are my own.
This is a really good summer romance! It takes place in a coastal small town with lots of character/s and a second chance love story that will have you rooting for Tate and Lainey to make it work this time. I also loved their friends and family especially the touching moments with Lainey and her dad, her brothers, Eden and Sam. Once again, I didn’t realize that this was going to be a closed door romance but I didn’t mind because it was a beautiful romance. I also empathized with the dedication at the beginning of the book but you should know that it has nothing to do with the book and that there will be an HEA. Thank you to the author Kelsey Whitney and her PA Emily Peace for the opportunity to read this early.
Sea la vie was a sweet love story about coming home and learning love even after your heart was broken 10 years ago. We meet Tate and Lainey who were childhood best friends whose friendship fell apart due to a really heartbreaking circumstance. Tate ends up back in Widows Wharf after finding out some not so pleasant news. Small town at its finest he runs into Lainey after a flat tire. Off we go through small town living, a little mystery and whole lot of love. If you love second chance, small towns, he falls first, cinnamon roll MMC, no third act breakup, and no spice this just for you.
My first ARC REVIEW!! 4⭐️ I loved Tate & Lainey’s story. Their second chance romance was swoon worthy! All the characters were so likable which is always fun! Let’s not forget the grandfather’s love story 🥹 And wow can we talk about how there was no 3rd act break up!?!? 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 THANK YOU!
Sea La Vie is out on May 10th and available on KU! Thank you BookFunnel and Emily Peace! 💛
*ARC Review* Sea La Vie by Kelsey Whitney was such a perfect beachy romance read! The male main character (Tate) was so cute and easy to picture as a “city boy”. Lainey (female main character) was sassy and gave small beach town vibes for sure! This book had aspects of: golden retriever boyfriend, enemies to lovers, second chance romance, and miscommunication. It was such an easy read and kept me entertained throughout. If you’re looking for a NO SPICE romance that just gives the good feelings read this one!! Thanks Kelsey for the ARC!
ARC Book Review: Sea La Vie by Kelsey Whitney Release Date: May 10, 2025
If a book could feel like sitting by the ocean with sand between your toes and a vanilla-sweet breeze in the air, Sea La Vie would be that book. Kelsey Whitney delivers a warm, heartfelt, and deeply emotional second-chance romance that's as comforting as your favorite Hallmark movie-with just the right blend of charm, humor, and tender vulnerability.
Set in the idyllic coastal town of Widow's Wharf, Sea La Vie follows Tate Matthews and Lainey Addams— former childhood best friends whose bond was fractured a decade ago by heartbreak. After Tate's life in the city comes crashing down-thanks to a cheating girlfriend and a failed proposal-he escapes to his grandfather's weathered seaside cottage. The last thing he expects is to run into Lainey, the one person he's never quite been able to forget.
What unfolds is a beautifully layered story of healing, reconnection, and quiet but powerful love. Lainey is a fiercely loyal, capable woman who has stepped up to run her family's fishing boat. She's used to putting others before herself. Tate, meanwhile, is a cinnamon roll of a man-soft-hearted, sincere, and genuinely wanting to care for the people he loves (glasses and all). Their chemistry is natural and sweet, with flirtation and banter that made me smile more times than I could count.
One of my favorite things about this book is that it flips the script-Tate is the one with all the comical mishaps, and watching him stumble (literally and figuratively) while trying to find his footing again was both funny and endearing. The dual POV adds depth to both characters, and I found myself equally invested in their individual journeys as much as their shared one.
A gentle mystery involving an old letter and a hint of a second love story weaves through the plot, adding a layer of intrigue without ever taking the spotlight off Tate and Lainey. I do wish the secondary storyline had been explored a bit more, but it still added a lovely touch of nostalgia and legacy to the book's themes.
If you're a fan of: * Second-chance romances * Small town settings * Friends-to-lovers * Low-angst (no third-act breakup!) * Closed-door romance (kisses only!) * Golden retriever MMCs ...then Sea La Vie will be your perfect summer escape.
This book felt like a breath of fresh, salty air. Real, captivating, and emotional—it had me laughing, tearing up, and swooning all at once. I devoured it in one sitting, and I already wish I could read it again for the first time. Huge thanks to Kelsey Whitney and her publishing team for the ARC-I'm so grateful to have been chosen to read this story, and even more excited that this is just the beginning of the Outer Banks series. I'll be first in line for the next one.
Rating: 5/5 Perfect for readers who want a romance that's cozy, heartfelt, and full of charm.
Three words to describe Sea La Vie: Real - Captivating - Emotional
Now on to the review!
Let me preface this review by first saying I’ve been in a bit of a romance book slump lately. Everything I’ve read has been good, but really nothing that connected with me. I signed up for an ARC knowing it was probably unlikely I would get selected since I’m not a big time social media person or anything, but figured it was worth a shot since I really really wanted to read this book. I was SO excited when I got the email that I was invited to the ARC team for this book as the second I read the premise I knew I had to read it. This is all to say that I had very high expectations for this book, and I am very happy to say that it met and exceeded all those expectations!
Lacie and Tate are both incredibly written characters. This book made me want to laugh, cry, and just never stop reading (yes, I read the whole book in one day. No, I’m not sorry). The issues each character is dealing with are just written in such a way that it adds to the emotion of their character and relationship, but doesn’t take over the whole plot of the book, which is something that I really love. It’s so often that romance books pick one issue with the character and make it the whole plot, and that is not the case with Sea La Vie.
I also love that for once the MMC is the character who has all the silly plot points happen to them. I won’t go into detail to avoid spoilers, but it’s refreshing to finally not have the FMC be the one the MMC has to take care of. I also love that Lacie is not a girly girl at all, and is a strong, independent woman who knows how to do things a stereotypical man would do. I don’t always love when books write an FMC like this because they usually go too far in the “I don’t need no man” direction, but this book did an incredible job of portraying Lacie as strong and independent, while also making sure to keep her personality realistic and relatable.
I also loved all the side characters. Beau and Emma as a side story was simply incredible, and I really hope we see more of them in the next book. I also loved all of Lacie’s family, the siblings were amazingly written and her dad and his storyline at the end just made me so emotional. I think I know who’s being set up to be the main event of the next book, and I cannot wait for the second book to come out so I can be back in this world again. I’ll for sure be applying for an ARC for the next book as soon as applications open, and reading Kelsey’s entire backlog.
Huge thanks to Kelsey Whitney and the publishing team for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, and thank you for picking more than just big influencers, it means the world to me 😊.
Tate and Lainey spent summers together in the coastal town on Widows Wharf in the outer banks as children. As they grew up together, they also grew closer but when they left that last summer on bad terms, they hadn't seen or spoken to each other in a decade. When Tate decides to come back after a failed proposal to reevaluate his life and also help fix up his grandfather's beach house, he bumps into Lainey again and old feelings start to resurface. Can these two keep the past in the past and help each other grow into a future together?
Don't get me wrong, I love a good Hallmark style romance book and I can't deny the small town setting is always charming, but this one just didn't connect with me. The early interaction when they meet again left a little to be desired. I feel like there could have been more anticipation buildup or awkward tension between them but it kinda fell flat.
I also didn't really know the characters all that well. Lainy was the town fixer and go-to girl but she never dreamed or attempted to do what she really wanted to do. We only learn of her garden dream later in the book. Nobody in town had any respect for her time and she ended up being a pushover and sacrificed her own time to help others. It was annoying how taken advantage of she was.
Tate started out as this hunky accountant but he morphed into a goofy clumsy guy who is scared of most things and recently realized that he is allergic to shellfish. Then halfway through the book, out of nowhere, he starts wearing glasses. Huh? It was kinda random. He transformed into a different person midway through the book to hit all the stereotypes of what a good book boyfriend was supposed to be. It was very confusing and I couldn't get a clear picture of him in my head.
Then this story takes a hard right turn into a long lost love story from Tate’s grandpa, Beau and his one that got away Emma, after they find a note and ring in a loose spot under the floorboards in Tate’s beach house.
The book wasn't bad, I just feel like it needed one more set of eyes on it to pull it together and not make it so choppy and let it flow together better. The fact that I was more interested in what happened between her best friend and her brother (Eden and Henry) and why there was so much animosity between the two goes to show how uninvested in the main characters I was. I wish I got into their head a little more to get to know them a little better.
Huge thanks to Kelsey Whitney for sharing this book’s digital advanced review copy with me in exchange for an honest review.
This book was the second chance summer romance serotonin boost I didn’t know I needed. Childhood love rekindled by fate? Genuine connection? Healing love? Second chance? Grown-up swoons & hilarious mishaps? All checked!
Kelsey’s writing flowed so effortlessly and seamless in a sense that it easily immersed and pulled me into Widow’s Wharf & yes that’s really the name of the town. The kind of prose that doesn’t just transport you, it relocates you. The way she sets her scenes is almost unfair; I didn’t just read about it, for a few hours I lived and strolled throughout that coastal town and was on that shipping boat. I wouldn’t be surprised if I started getting mail addressed to me there.
Now let’s talk Lainey. Our overachieving, precious, loyal-to-a-fault, back-bending, responsibility-hoarding Lainey. She’s been putting her dreams on hold, taking care of literally everyone else & quietly carrying the weight of the whole family as if it’s her sole purpose in life. She’s so relatable it almost hurts. Watching her journey felt like peeling back the layers of someone who forgot how to let people in and ask for help.
And then, Tate. Oh, Tate. Golden retriever energy in human form and I say that with full hearted adoration. He’s charming without trying, dependable without being dull, and exactly what Lainey needed. He took care of her and more. He’s funny, tender, slightly chaotic, endearing clumsy and with a big enough heart for Lainey. Their chemistry was a mix of awkward run-ins, tender reconnections, & heartfelt moments.
Their reconnection didn’t feel rushed or overly polished. It was paced just right; familiar, steady, and earned. The years didn’t erase what they had, it merely paused it. And watching them hit play again & have it reignite? I was invested. Emotionally. Spiritually. Wholeheartedly.
Also, I need more of those side characters. Eden & Henry? What’s going on there? Cara & Hank? Something is brewing and I can smell it. The vibes are immaculate. So here I am, metaphorically standing on the porch of my fictional beach house, shouting into the coastal wind: Kelsey, I want more! Please answer my calls.
RECAP: After Tate’s picture-perfect life implodes, he retreats to his late grandfather’s seaside cottage, only to find old feelings resurfacing fast. His childhood best friend, Lainey, now rooted in their hometown, isn’t exactly thrilled to see him… until unresolved history and a mysterious letter force them to face the past.
REVIEW: I picked up Sea La Vie because I’m a sucker for two things: summer beach romance and childhood best friends who finally figure out their feelings. And this book delivered on both! Did I swoon? Yes. Did I scream every time they refused to admit how they felt? Also yes. Did I consider packing up my family and moving to a quaint coastal town à la Gilmore Girls? I mean, I’m not not thinking about it.
Lainey and Tate were childhood besties turned semi-strangers, now reunited in the quirky little town of Widow’s Wharf after a decade apart. Their story hit all my favorite notes: the ache of a missed connection, the comfort of coming home again, and the kind of romantic tension that made me want to lock them in a room until they worked out their issues (and maybe kissed a little). Their chemistry was undeniable, but what really got me was the emotional depth. This story is about more than just falling back in love. It’s also about these characters rebuilding trust, healing old wounds, and navigating their relationship as adults. I loved the backstory. I loved the banter. I loved the tension. I loved all of it.
I especially enjoyed the little mystery tucked into the plot. A cryptic old letter about a vanished lighthouse hidden under the floorboards? Yes, please. I didn’t see that subplot coming, but it gave the story such a fun twist.
This book is pure second-chance bliss, with a solid dash of small-town chaos and some light emotional baggage for flavor. I laughed. I sighed. I kicked my feet. I even got teary, but I’m blaming the sea breeze.

"If he really wants to give this a second chance, I need him to prove it."
Summary: Lainey Adams has spent most of her life saying "yes" to everyone around her in the small town where she lives with no thought of her dreams and goals. Much to her surprise, the boy who stole her heart has returned 10 years later. Tate thrives on order and everything in its place, which is the exact opposite of Lainey. With a plan to fix up his family cottage, he can't help the feelings that resurface the more he's with Lainey.
"Lainey feels like home."
My Thoughts: Oh my!!! This was the perfect summer read and just the book I needed. I'm not usually one for second-chance romance but I love how this book showed their second chance as first a reconnection of their childhood friendship after 10 long years apart. I love how flustered Tate became anytime Lainey was around, knocking over displays, tripping over his words, and even becoming a pirate for the day. But despite his many mishaps, Tate saw Lainey for who she is and wanted to do anything to help her achieve her dreams and goals since she's always helping everyone else. The two of them shared a special connection and friendship that they just fell right back into once Tate arrived.
I loved how their relationship slowly progressed from being friends again to more throughout the book. The residents of the small town were hilarious in this book always keeping their eyes on Tate to be sure he didn't break Lainey's heart. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next with this crazy bunch. Finally, I LOVED the secondary summer love story that we got bits and pieces of throughout the book. What a perfect beach read.
Read if you love: 💖Childhood friends to lovers 🥰Second chance 2️⃣Dual POV 🎣Small town 👏No 3rd act breakup 💜Golden retriever MMC 🤩Closed-door romance
It is a closed-door romance and honestly? That fits the vibe of the writing and the characters so well. I wasn't quite sure how spicy it was going to get so I was pleasantly surprised when there wasn't anything further than a handful of kisses (considering how every romance nowadays is full "steam" ahead) and I think it was a great fit.
I enjoyed the setting and the smalltown vibe, and the characters were a good match. Tate may have been a bit... much; like too many tropes/personas were trying to fit into one person, so it came out a little clunky. He toed that line of "cute-and-funny-pathetic" and "just a little pathetic," you know? Things happen and it's an "aww, Tate, you're so naive" but said affectionately, and then things kept happening and it felt a tad excessive. BUT I did really enjoy Lainey's character. She felt like she always had to say "yes" whenever someone asked for her help, and she showed some great growth.
While the grandfather plotline was interesting, I didn't quite care for how we'd randomly get some points of view from 1963. In my opinion, I'd have preferred just hearing grandpa tell the story from Tate or Lainey's point of view- mostly because it was such a random shift in perspective. Also, those perspectives are set in 1963, but the characters still acted like they were in the 2000s.
Tate and Lainey's love story was a little predictable and the ending felt a tad rushed? Not fully fleshed out, I guess. But it was sweet.
All in all, I did enjoy this read. There were a couple of issues I had, but the rest was well done.
I really enjoyed Sea La Vie! It’s such a cozy, small-town second-chance romance that felt warm and comforting. Lainey Adams is such a relatable main character—she’s a total people-pleaser, always trying to do right by everyone around her, even if it means putting herself last. You can really feel how tired she is from carrying so much. And then Tate Matthews, her childhood best friend (and honestly, the one that got away), suddenly comes back into town after ten years, turning everything upside down.
I loved the way Lainey and Tate’s relationship was written. Their connection felt so natural and familiar, even after being apart for so long. It made me smile seeing them slowly realize they still really liked each other after all those years, even while they tried to convince themselves they were just friends. Watching them navigate their history and feelings felt really genuine.
The small-town setting was super charming, and I really enjoyed the side characters that brought the community to life. I especially loved the side story about Grandpa Beau and Emma—it added so much heart, and now I’m really looking forward to reading more about the other characters in town in the next books!
The writing had a nice balance of humor and warmth, making it so easy to fly through the chapters.
Overall, Sea La Vie is such a heartwarming story about love, friendship, and finding your way back to yourself. It left me with a big smile on my face, and I’d happily read more from this author.
Thank you to the author for the ARC—this is my honest review.
Sea La Vie by Kelsey Whitney 🌞🌊🐚 5/5 sun-kissed stars
Okay sunshine babes—if you’re looking for the book to toss in your beach bag, THIS. IS. IT. Sea La Vie is sweet, swoony, and soaked in small-town summer magic. It’s giving second chances, slow sips of iced tea on a porch swing, and soft breezes that smell like sunscreen and sea salt.
Lainey and Tate are childhood besties turned maybe-we-shouldn’t-have-let-each-other-go heartbreakers. When fate (and a cheating ex) throws them back together in their old beach town, the chemistry is instant—but what really got me? The way they show up for each other. Tender. Honest. No unnecessary drama. Just two people trying to love better this time around. And I was OBSESSED. 😍
✨ No third-act breakup (hallelujah) ✨ A quirky seaside town with major summer nostalgia ✨ Flirty banter + found family vibes ✨ Mystery letters + a second love story blooming in the background (hi, Eden & Henry 👀)
Tate is the kind of man who makes you want to cancel your Hinge account forever, and Lainey is the relatable queen of “I’ll do everything for everyone else but forget myself.” Watching them fall back in love? Like warm sunshine on your skin.
This book feels like a barefoot walk on the beach with a fruity drink in hand and a heart full of hope.
So yeah—if you need a feel-good, soft-as-sand summer romance? Sea La Vie is calling. Don’t leave it unread.
Thank you Booked with the Emilys and Kelsey Whitney for the gifted book.
Closed door – kissing only
If you are looking for a sweet, summer romance this is the book for you. It gave me some Carly Fortune vibes, but with less spice and a tiny bit of mystery. This is the perfect book to binge by the pool or on the beach.
It was fun watching Lainey and Tate’s relationship rekindle, and I enjoyed the fact that Lainey was the one who was able to fix anything, and Tate bordered on helpless in a lot of instances. It was a fun role reversal.
I was able to relate to both characters quite a bit. Lainey was trying to help keep her family on track after the death of her mother and shouldered a lot of the familial responsibilities. Not necessarily because her family was making her, but because she felt like she had to do it, which is something I struggle with. Tate thrived on order and predictability, which is completely me. I have a schedule, and I like to stick to it. I am not a huge fan of change. Watching the two of them lean into each other and help each other to realize their dreams was amazing. It gave me that warm fuzzy feeling I love getting when I read romances.
There was also a small mystery in the book. It was definitely a secondary plot line, but I enjoyed it. It was a fun twist that isn’t always in romance books.

🌊 Childhood friends to lovers 🩷 Second chance romance 🌊 Small Town 🩷 Dual POV 🌊 No 3rd act breakup 🩷 Golden retriever MMC 🌊 Closed door romance
The Notebook meets The Longest Ride 😍 — and I was hooked! Two of my favorite movies rolled into one beautiful, heartwarming book? Yes, please!🥺 Sea La Vie by Kelsey Whitney is a wholesome, charming, and laugh-out-loud love story that stole my heart from page one.
Tate and Lainey, once inseparable childhood friends, were torn apart a decade ago. But a heartbreaking discovery brings Tate back to the small town of Widow’s Wharf—and back to the girl he never stopped loving.
Now, I usually fall hard for tough, rugged MMCs with serious “touch her and 💀” energy... So imagine my surprise when Tate, the pampered, clumsy, octopus-fearing, tire-changing-inept cinnamon roll of a man had me absolutely howling with laughter. 🤣🤭 He’s the kind of “needs-saving” hero you didn’t know you’d adore—hilariously soft, unexpectedly endearing, and completely unforgettable. And Lainey? The ultimate sweetheart.🥰 A gentle soul, a people-pleaser, and the kind of heroine you genuinely want to root for.
This book isn’t just a romance—it’s a warm hug. With small-town vibes, family bonds, swoony second chances, and not just one, but two utterly adorable love stories, Sea La Vie is an easy 5-star read that will leave your heart full and your face smiling.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
୨୧ Sea La Vie hooked me from page one with its perfect blend of small-town charm, emotional depth, and a slow-burning second chance romance.
୨୧ The story follows Lainey Adams, a tough, resilient fisherwoman trying to save her family’s struggling business. When her childhood best friend Tate Matthews returns to their coastal town after his picture-perfect life falls apart, old wounds and unresolved feelings resurface.
୨୧ I loved the setting — Widow’s Wharf feels like a character in itself, with salty air, sleepy streets, and a community full of quirks and secrets. The romance is heartfelt and realistic, with emotional tension that builds slowly and satisfyingly. And let’s not forget Midge, Lainey’s corgi — total scene-stealer!
୨୧ One of the highlights for me was the parallel storyline of Emma and Beau, whose letters from the past mirror Lainey and Tate’s journey. It added an unexpected depth and emotional resonance.
୨୧ This book might be your next favourite if you love: – Second chance romance – Small-town stories – Friends-to-lovers – Strong female leads – Coastal vibes

Thanks to Kelsey for sending me an ARC for this book! Here’s my honest review: This book felt very YA to me (and i don’t know if it is or not so don’t kill me) and very childish. I honestly didn’t love this book at all. Tate felt like he was written as trying to be so many different types of “book boyfriends” it felt a little sloppy and just again, childish. But these characters are in their late 20s. It was a cute second chance romance but i feel like i the whole plot was just not explained well & felt too short to me. I liked how the town came together for Lainey and how Tate helped her to achieve her dreams in the end. There was also just random parts added to the book that felt out of place. Like Tate’s grandad’s POV and Eden’s POV. The dialogue was just cringey to me & i generally found myself wanting to put this book down so many times while reading it. But alas, i pursued & i was a little disappointed with how it ended. I didn’t have high hopes while reading this book, but even then the ending still let me down.
Kelsey Whitney’s bio says she has a heart for the coast. After reading just one of her books, I can attest to the truth of that statement. Sea La Vie is basically a love letter to small coastal towns. With more than its fair share of bad puns (some sea-themed, others coffee-related), this childhood friends to lovers book will have you falling in love with Widow’s Wharf and its residents. She’s a people pleaser who cannot say no. He’s a strict planner with a checklist for life. Together, they are both more.
In this book you’ll get a seven year old with a penchant for worms, a loyal dog named Midge, a town busybody, house renovations, an attack octopus, *long* lost love and drama on the high seas. This is a slow burn, zero spice book. I can see potential for at least two more relationships in Widow’s Wharf - maybe there’ll be more books set there?? It is most definitely worth the read.
This was a really sweet romance with a small side mystery romance POV from the past.
Tate, skips Town to get away from the city and his "perfect" life that has just been turned upside down to find himself in the sleepy small town of Widows Wharf were he used to vacation as a kid.
Bad news, he's stranded on the side of the road..and does he even know how to change a flat tire?
Good news is, he may have just been rescued by his childhood crush, Lainey Adams.
This town, a cozy seaside cottage, its quirky side characters, golden retriever mmc, and a do everything for everyone fmc (but also stop doing everything for everyone 😂) made for a fun time! I enjoyed seeing how their relationship picks up right where it left off when they were young. While also processing the things that went wrong in a respectful way and how they learn to communicate and lean on eachother throughout.
I really enjoyed this one and it would make for a great summer/beach read!
